I bought my 2004 Boxster S 7 years ago . I decided to treat myself for my 60th birthday. Every time I drive it , I have a massive smile on my face. All cars will have their foibles that you will have to live with or get rid of it. If money was no object we would all have whatever we liked. But we don’t have a huge pot of money but I would always advise getting a professional to give it the once over before you buy. Good video 👍
The lesson as always, pay a little more for a used car and you’ll be rewarded. I paid a little more than I wanted for my last used Boxster because it was a 1 owner, well maintained and it’s been great.
The owner is important and seeing if they care about the car and look after it or just hoon it around into shopping trolleys and never change the oil.

Well I bought a one owner owned by an old man 2003 E500 for 3 grand with 180k miles and it ran great for the next 10k miles... up until some idiot slammed into it and totaled it

@@420BudNuggets 2008 base model. Last year of the IMS. It was probably the best year because the bearing failure on 2008’s are very low. Since everyone knows 2009 was the new engine, the price decrease from 2009 to 2008 helped me buy it.
This is the best advice you can get. I’ve bought 2 “cheap” boxsters and nothing is more expensive than a “cheap” Porsche. Pay more up front and spend less in the long run.
When I bought my 04’ Boxster, I didn’t think I would “like it that much” because it was “just a base model. I have been blown away by how good of a car it really is. The handling on these cars is phenomenal for the price point and the power is sufficient for the vehicle size. IMO one of the best cars for the price
I would argue with you as I love my Boxster. But I took a Bondurant racing course in Phoenix in a Z06 Corvette and it changed my opinion of Corvettes of that vintage. Fun car. I'd still rather have an older Boxster S model.

@@chidogg93t Mine is a 2000 S model. Like the Wizard says, the S is pretty much a 911 with a bit less displacement. Other than size, the engines are pretty much the same. It is an amazing car for the money. Most car people prefer the 6-speed so I would recommend that. Driving hard on the twisties makes a manual transmission feel necessary. That is what these cars are for. It does vicious corners like it's on rails. The small amount of money you spend over the cost of a base model will more than be paid for both in fun and in resale value. The S models will increase in value much more than the base models. Be sure to be patient and find a nice example. Mine had only 50K miles and drives like new. They are out there but be patient until you find yours. Good luck. You won't be disappointed.
Many many used Porsche’s advertised in the regional and national PCA magazine. Go to the local club meeting, people will know all the really good cars that members are selling. Real porsche enthusiasts won’t sell a money pit, and if the do they will tell you every single problem.
My 2000 Boxster had the original clutch, IMS and RMS and I sold it at 140k miles. Sometimes you just get lucky with these cars as long as you do the oil changes when needed.
The word is that driving them hard to keep the oil moving around the IMS will keep it in good shape.
It's not really so much luck if diligent with oil changes > staying on schedule with maintenance will generally reward > whereas it's indeed bad luck/rare if on schedule & ends up in the garage
From my own experience, I'd estimate ~80% of cars are sold largely due to problems. Very few sell a reliable car.
Yup. You just have to pray that the previous owners idea of problems align with your views of "maintenance"

look at the secondary market prices of base BMW 3 series same year compared to a base Lexus IS, than look at the original retail prices for both and look how much the bmw dropped compared to the Lexus. This would be because Lexus/Toyota typically makes more reliable cars hence the aftermarket prices.
BMW is typically a “more desirable” name yet you can find them typically cheaper & lower miles than other “luxury” vehicles same year because they’re known to have more issues if you aren’t meticulous with them.
I will admit, the best sports car for the money and reliable is the 1997-2004 Chevy Corvette with the 6 speed manual.
I have a 2004 boxster. I love it. What a fun Sunday drive car.
I freakin love my '05 Boxster. 168,000 miles on it and I daily drive it for the past four years.

The 99 Boxster, if it has its original engine, will have the dual row IMS bearing. It is much more robust than the later single row. As you recommend, you still need to check for signs of failure. I have a 1998 build 996 911 that also came with the first generation M96 engine (M96/01). It has 92k miles and the original dual row IMS bearing.
I had a tweener 2001 Boxster and it was very close to being either the 1 or 2 row IMS bearing. I was 90% sure it had the 2 row, but I sold it anyway.
Funny thing is you buy one in good shape and low milage it will fail on you but if you buy one that was used almost as racing car it will run good because bearings get enough oil only if you rev high 😂😂

How can you check for failure?
@@TucsonDude Look in the folds of the paper oil filter for bits of steel. Unfortunately, if you find any, it's too late. By then there are probably bits of IMS bearing material in the connecting rod bearings and main bearings. The best thing to do, if you are not positive about the IMS history and the oil and filter are clean, is to replace the IMS bearing.
There are also some owners who get oil analysis done after each oil change and they look for changes in metals.
I learned EVERY aspect of the 986 (issues and all) before considering choices and was able to track one down and negotiate it to $4900 during the lowest point of sale prices for these . 1999, Black 100k, No damning reports and lots of great maintenance reports kept Filed. Got it last fall and drove it a ton before the Winter. Prepped it for spring and then drove to St. Louis this summer. Have put in about 2k miles since. Worked on my self and Super happy to work on it thus far.

About 8 years ago, I thought I could finally have that Porsche Boxster I wanted. Found an ‘02 with 68,000 miles.
In the year that I owned it, I spent $4,500 on repairs.
Don’t buy a car like this unless you have disposable income and can do the work yourself. Because you WILL need both.
Similar story with me on my 2000 Boxster that I bought in 2012. Water pump and O2 sensors failed within first year. Then motor mounts, brakes, tires......costs can quickly amount.
what did you expect from a 10 year old car that was usually beaten and in the US often used on long distance but missing maintenance, love, passion pride.
Here in central europe people take care or they loose cause without the porsche maintenance in the books you learn your lesson in the second you wanna sell it.
Good maintained Boxster here work quite well but you need too afford the maintenance + parts and an ambissioned mechanic who simply loves and dies for Porsche + his work.

TYPE xxi - WOLF one SHOULD be able to expect a 10 year old car with only 68,000 miles to still be relatively reliable. 6 cylinders and automatic transmission in a Boxster is not what should be considered a high performance automobile. I’ve had older American cars, that were a lot less expensive with 3 times the mileage that were virtually trouble free. German engineering is a joke and replacement parts costs are ridiculous.
Any Corvette at twice the age and double the mileage would eat Porsche’s lunch and do it economically and happily.
We are simply looking at German fantasy to think there is any quality it their automobiles.
@@davidhanesworth8027 Yup! 3 years ago I bought a 93 Chevy van with only 91,000 miles. All I did was a full tune-up and had all the fluids changed. No problems.
When they look to good to be true, it usually is. Wizard doesn't steer you wrong.

Seven years ago my wife bought a 1999 Boxster in excellent shape with really low mileage. Price was definitely not cheap, but It has been a great trouble-free car. Still has original IMS but as someone else mentioned it is the dual row bearing model, which has had a much lower failure rate than single row. Nice thing about these cars is that there's a ton of information out there for the DIYer who wants to do his/her own work and they're actually not too bad to work on.

I love a lot of cars that in general have bad reputations but I sure there are options and trim levels that are easier to live with that the problematic ones. And I need to know them.
Would love to see a review on:
Jaguar S or X-types (I love the styling and AWD option on the X)
Old SLK roadsters with the folding hard tops (would like to replace my Miata with a hardtop convertible and these seem very affordable now, and I’m sure because of mechanical reasons.)
Dodge Charger sedans (would just love one and curious to see how some trims/engines age over others)
I have an infinite list but those come to mind.

Thanks for talking about mechanics not wanting to work on your vehicle. While it happened when I was younger and owned a very very well maintained but old car. No one wanted to touch it. Was very frustrating.

The modified one would probably be great for someone willing to work on their own car as long as the work done looks quality.
Do a series where your suggest a particular year and trim level of a specific model of car both from a mechanical/quality perspective (the manufacturer got things right that particular year) and from a perspective of bang for the buck where the car has hit a sweet spot in the depreciation curve so the rewards are greater than the risk of costly repairs and you will not bankrupt yourself if you hold on to the car 2-4 years before moving on.

This new series will help a lot of viewers make an informed decision about new purchases. I see to many people come through the shop with the new car they bought and I find major issues.

The Boxster and Cayman are my dream car (actually prefer the Cayman), though I understand that owning one might not be practical, and maintenance and budget friendly. I'm accustomed to driving my 94 Toyota PU with 22RE which has been mostly budget friendly! "It's just that good"! :-)! I'd probably be in for a rude awakening with a Porsche. And living on the other side of the continental divide, I would not have the Car Wizard to work his magic! :-).
2005 Boxster bought at dealership in Littleton Co., 2013 . One owner trade on 911. have copy of dealer service records, immaculate inside and out with clear vinyl paint protector. Immensely fun to drive, have had it now for nearly 10 years, replaced water pump, and the CD/RADIO to a NAV package. Now 17 years old, appears new, no regrets for overpaying it when i bought it. A bargain in the long run. Now has 70,000 miles and like a top it runs!

I have a 2000 Boxster S. Only drive it in the summer and even avoid driving in the rain. Only 66 000 km. Third owner, owned it for 4 years now, Change oil every year (approx every 4000 KM) with Mobil 1 full synthetic. No problems, knock on wood. I just brings a smile to my face with top down spirited driving. A couple of small mods, including snorkel removal for better sound. I would recommend this car if it has been well maintained.

Yep, I concur. Usually (not always) things are priced accordingly. I do take care of my things and tend to sell nice stuff cheap just because I usually want to sell it fast with no negotiation... so it is possible, just unlikely. With a Porsche, I wouldn't want to try to do too much wrenching myself since its hard to access the engine and it sits low. My last couple used cars, a 1993 Land Cruiser and a 2007 FJ Cruiser were sold to me very cheap. But I spent a lot of time and money restoring them in my garage out of necessity. Going forward I'm more willing to pay the extra amount for the cleaner product.

The old lipstick on a pig deal. 😉. I work on old Euro bikes and have turned down MANY more customers than I have taken in. Good for you Wizard! When buying a used car my dad always said condition ,condition, condition
same thing, odometer fraud is a real thing, car can be low mile but condition says otherwise
Location is important too its best to find cars in places where roads arent salted.

It must be different here where I live, We have a racetrack, Area 27, in our town and we have many, many heavily modified cars and many shops if not most will happily work on them and offer diagnostic services and what not to the best of their ability and the within the range of the shop equipment. I would also suggest that some mods are an improvement over the stock design many times and will offer improved performance and greater economy while easily maintaining stock reliability or even better.
Out of those 3 options, Id say buy the boxster.

Agree for the most part but even the third car you need to double check everything and make sure there are actually records throughout its whole life. Just to make sure the last service wasn't the only one done properly. And of course have a pre-purchase inspection done by a different dealer. In regards to modified cars, I agree 100%.
In my opinion, last year of the 993 and the whole front engine series for Porsche. Absolute favourite the 968.

A great tip for purchasers: If there are limited classified ads for the model you're looking for, that's a good sign that car is reliable since a reliable car offers less reasons to sell. Research which model you want, search and search but most important, be patient.

I appreciate what you're saying about the condition of the wheels, but the wheels on my 2009 are pretty scratched up. And that's because I've always tried to hug the curb and sometimes, I've gotten a little too close. But I don't have scratches or door dings to look at.
Even if the dealer maintained boxster had double the mileage, I would look at that one first. Service records are key!
Tip: The clear headlights could have been polish. It will usually last from 3 month to a year from my experience.
Good honest mechanic is the hardest thing to find only found a couple in my life and I'm 50 years old.
