986 Porsche Boxster Review...What To Expect from Ownership With an Affordable Porsche Sports Car!!

- The 986 Porsche Boxster was presented at the Detroit Auto Show in 1993! With the introduction of this new sports car model Porsche would go back to its roots of a mid-engine sports car initially released in the 50's with the 550 Spyder and again in the 70's with the 914! With sales dramatically declining from 50,000 units in 1986 to just under 14,000 in 1993...Porsche decided it was time to release a new model the Boxster to help jumpstart sales with an entry level Porsche. With the help of Toyota consultants Porsche was able to streamline its manufacturing going to "Just In Time" production method which helped eliminate excess part production with parts being available when they were needed on the assembly line! This Boxster shares many components with the 996 911 as well also helping to reduce total costs for both models.
The Boxster was an instant success taking the throne as top seller from 1996 to 2003 (was not released in the U.S until model year 1997) helping push Porsche out of its sales slump! The first year in the U.S. the Boxster helped Porsche almost be able to double its sales up to just over 13,000 units. With the demand so high Porsche had to open a second manufacturing plant in Finland (the car in the video was produced at the Finland plant).
Although the Boxster was an instant success it did come with a handful of issues.. water pumps, horns quite working, porous engine blocks, air oil separators and of course the infamous IMS bearing issue. No more than 10% of the cars were affected by this issue!
A 986 Boxster is a tremendous value for the money:
-Incredibly fun to drive
-Handle like the car is on rails
-Built to last as long ad they have been taken care of
- Relatively inexpensive as the model has bottomed out of its depreciation
-ITS A PORSCHE!!
I highly recommend the 986 Boxster if someone is looking take a dive into the Porsche market! Be sure to get a PPI before purchasing a car as many cars can look good on the outside but are not necessarily mechanically sound!

I bought a 2003 Boxster. 60000 miles. It’s now 18 years old and has required some work. Boo boo. It’s 18 years old!
And here’s the good news. Parts are inexpensive from Pelican Parts and working on the car is pretty straight forward. I do my own work and I’m not that clever.
If you want one? Get one. Awesome car.
And to honest the open car gig is the best thing going.

I just bought my firsdt Porsche in March 2019. It is a 2003 Boxster S. When I got it it had 54k miles I have put about 8k on it since I have owned it. I absolutely love these cars.

@@PerspectivePossibilities Still going strong. I am sitting at just under 74K. Not all was required to keep it running, but I have put 12K into repairs/upgrades total since I bought the car.
great video of the weakness that these things have, without beating the IMS issue to death. All those little problem things never get talked about in online forum's, but I am sure the service dept. has to deal with them everyday. Keep up the good content!

Legaumaisdsts most of what’s being said, regarding the IMs is regular oil changes cut open the oil filter for inspection regular use avoid low mileage cars. Later cars had around 8% failure rate.

@@longebane 996 up to 1999 have no IMS problem (Up to engine # M 661 14164 Carrera 996 3.4L IMS Double).
I bought mine last year, a 2001 silver 2.7 with 25k miles. Spent $2000 to replace IMS (just in case). Great , underrated (good for the value) car. But always remember that when you need new parts, it's still a Porsche.

Damn !!! I thought I was lucky at 48K miles for a 2000 S model. I could afford a lot more but a $90K miles 911 wouldn't impress me any more. I have ABSOLUTELY no desire for a newer car or a 911.

Wow! 6K. That's a find. I thought I was doing well with a 2000 S with only 48K. Many miles of fun there. Just remember to keep the battery charged. If it goes dead you can't open the frunk to charge the battery. Look for videos in that case.

Really enjoyed your review and drive. I owned a 97 Boxster for 5 years. You missed two of the CRONIC issues.....Airbag light due to short. My light was on almost the entire time I owned despite multiple repairs at dealership and second the convertible top cables. You MUST keep a constant eye on the top going up and down. One of my cables snapped and I released the button just in time to avoid frame damage to the top housing. I was told by dealership when I drove in (with top in half down position) that most folks ignore the noise and imbalance and keep going cause thousands in damage to top frame.

Very comprehensive review. Well done. I just bought a 1999 Boxster...my first Porsche since my 1973 911E. I had the same issue with the key fob but luckily the dealer is working with me on resolving the issue.

Views! Very good review, I almost bought a 986 after I sold my c6 corvette but the ims issue drove me away. I really want a 996 or 997 and I’m saving $$ for one but I thought I’d look into 986’s again to see how much they’re going for and in my area I can get a solid one for about $10k which isn’t bad at all! The 2000 S also had another radiator in front. That can be seen in the S model in an oval hole in the center of the front bumper between the normal two oval holes for the standard 986 radiators. That's the first thing I look for ...

Bought a 2001 2.7 for £3000 4 yrs ago, it's been really reliable and inexpensive, not worried about the IMS bearing as it's gone past 100000 miles so if it goes the parts in the car if I break it are worth more than I paid. you need to buy a £10 drain cleaning rod to push through the debris under the bonnet and to the side of the roof mechanism other wise you get water in behind the seat and then your ECU gets fried, great fun for no next to money

Lots of useful info here! I picked up a 986 as a rebuild for my channel and I definitely didn't know about half of these quirks. My project car failed at 30k miles
so currently doing a full engine swap! I've learned a ton but man these things are a pain to work on 😅😂

I myself was looking at the MX-5 also but after sitting in one I realized it was just a little to small for my long arms & legs so I bought a 99 boxster base and love it.

im planning on getting this exact model. theres one with 126k(?) miles and its 9 grand thats been parked at a local lot next to a 2007 cayman for quite a while now. its not in the best condition, a few scuffs, but im hoping that ill have saved up enough money to grab it soon so i can say i had a porsche for my first car. that would be pretty cool

You can also tell a Boxster from a Boxster S from the front radiator, openings in the front bumper, the Boxster S has three openings vs the Boxster with two, also the muffler (if it isn't modified) the Boxster has one exhaust opening while the Boxster S has two exhaust openings.

Just found this because my son is getting a 99 Boxster from his Uncle. My wife has a 2017 Macan S and soon our son will have a 99 Boxster. I have heard the earlier Boxster had a double row IMS bearing , Porsche changed that to single in 2000, hence the IMS issue. Anyhooo love your video.

I have a 2002 Boxter S bought in 2005. It has been a fantastic car with minimum expense in terms of maintenance. My one question is to do with the key fob. Where ( apart from Porsche) can I get a new fob? I live in Ontario Canada. Thanks

i did.. i went from michigan to florida 3 times in one month
drove my boxster an it ran perfect and turned a few heads!!
now im happy with a piece of mind
and can daily drive it and race
chargers without worrying about it blowing up on me!
OH by the way... when u change the oil do 9 qts of strait 15w40
your rod bearings will thank u for it.
these engines get hot
and that 0w40 mobile 1 aint gonna cut it.
if u ever hear a slight engine tap it is oil related
thicker oil in high heat helps that.
0w anything is just to thin for that flat 6
the thicker oil is so you wont spin a rod bearing
when your tracking your car.
dont ever sell it!
if u need another car buy one!
so to sell your boxster is just plain stupid.

Thanks bro! Means a lot! That would be the perfect car to learn on! Hill's are definitely a bit tough.. easing off the e-brake while feathering gas and clutch is a helpful little trick! I am sure once you can spend a solid 2-3 hours behind the wheel you will get it down! I don't blame you manual is a lot of fun and helps you feel the real connection between you and the car... a manual will probably hold its value longer too! I am sure the prices will stay down for awhile longer!👍

Just bought a 2000 Boxter S with only 35,000 km on it. ( roughly 20,000 miles ) do you recommend I change out the IMS bearing and at what mileage should I look at doing that? I have read a lot of people get that done when they do the clutch but not sure how many miles one gets before having to replace the clutch.
I bet the Boxster is a really good Porsche. (Also pretty inexpensive too) I'd definitely want to buy one.

Don't even think about getting the Z.....Way to many problems.....To me the only other choice would be a BMW Z4.......Or if you are real small a Mazda Miata MX-5.

Very wrong about the electronic hood (frunk) and trunk. My 2000 S Frunk and Trunk are electronic. If the battery goes dead, you're f-ked. The battery is in the fronk so with a dead battery, you can't open to frunk to recharge the battery. You have to do a pain-in-the-ass procedure in the fuse box to recharge the battery to be able to open the fronk and trunk (or of course, start the car). That being said, these cars are damned near free for the fun they give you. Get a low mileage one and get an S model. The prices are about to skyrocket. I'm sure if you are interested in a fun car you have been watching the videos about these. They are amazing. I wasn't a Porsche guy at all. I bought mine because it was beautiful and low mileage. I'm stunned by what you get for the money ...
Great vid. Fair to say any 911 or 986 that didnt have its ims will be worth less. Just put a vertex eps. Roller bearing ims in my 911. Peace of mind. Def not cheap. Wow

I picked up a 2000 2.7 this past summer with about 80,000mi. I didn't do any research before purchasing almost on the spot. Just simply loved the little yellow convertible. I know enough about cars in general to give an inspection but nothing about 986's. It's turned out great so far. I have most of the service records and it was well taken care of. IMS bearing done at 72,000 five years ago (along with clutch). It's funny you mentioning the little things like foam coming out of the vents which is happening simultaneously with a few creaks developing from the dash. The low whistle you mention for us does not come from the rear of the car...it comes from the passenger side dash. Either with spirited cornering or when shutting the car off. Any ideas? I've replaced all the struts (not cheap) and I know it needs new pads. I'm guessing I have suspension bushings to replace soon too. Is it true that entire suspension parts must be replaced rather than just new bushings? As with any older vehicle there are little things to address but working on the car is almost a fun as driving it. Almost!

Mhmmm interesting on the whistle... does it happen when the air is still on even though the car is off? If so could possible be a flap motor in the HVAC system. Yes generally Porsche does sell the bushings separately but as an entire kit with the suspension component 😌 Makes me happy to hear your having such a great time with it 😊 Let me know on the whistle!

Being able to share with and question other enthusiast owners who generally have above average experience and knowledge is gold. Thanks for your response. Really thinking about it, I think you're on the money with the Flap on the HVAC. It corresponds with the foam coming out of the vents. That will be a project I'll tackle when I do my planned interior refresh. I'm more focused on addressing the mechanical side of the vehicle first before the aesthetic side (which is really quite good). First jobs this spring when it comes out of storage is the air oil separator and brake pads. I'm also questioning the motor and trans mounts. The car usually is as smooth as silk but occasionally it has a vibration (at speeds above 60). The mounts have never been changed. Suspension bushings next. I'm lucky enough to have a retired brother with a shop and hoist with great wrench turning skills. Any advise on brake pads? Sooooooo many options.

@@Pcarwhisperer I think so, the private seller sent me his last bill from the shop when he took it in and got everything taken care of (including IMS) and it was a very long list and a big amount. So hopefully it is well serviced and ready for another 100K miles!

Can you send an engine oil sample to a lab to determine if the IMS bearing is beginning to fail? Or does it fail with absolutely zero warning?
Very good question! An oil sample will generally not be able to determine if the IMS is failing. The best precursors to watch out for are... Metal shavings in the oil filter, a ticking noise coming the engine bell housing area (however this could be anything), I would recommend getting a magnetic oil drain plug as well... metal shavings will stick it and can be checked every service. All in all sometimes they may just fail without any warning signs. Thank you for the question Matthew!

If I get one I would likely factor in the cost to replace that bearing into the final price of the car. I would do the work myself. From my research it looks doable but also a very time consuming job.

I found a 97 boxster on craigslist for 2500 the top doesn't work and has a leak the owner doesn't know where it's coming from I want to purchase it for a project. What would you recommend?
Mhmm great question! Is the car running? How many miles? Cab top issues can sometimes be difficult to repair depending on what it is. I have seen the cab top transmissions go bad which can be relatively expensive unless you can source one from from a dismantler. LA Dismantler is a great source. Great! Tough question! I would try looking for the newest possible with lower miles.....75K or less! There is a fine line between year, miles and reliability! That being said for around 10k I would look for the lowest possible mileage that is 2000 or newer as there were some nice changes going forward! Before purchasing I would recommend getting a PPI done to make sure there is not any major issues! Being about 20 years old there will be some issues that arise here and there but the key is to find lower miles... (but not too low like 20K) sometimes these cars may have issues as well since they have not been driven and the rubber and plastic components may be cracking! Long story short I would look at something 2000 or newer with 40k - 75k miles! Thanks for the question!

You know that to CLOSE the front trunk, you have to lower it in place, AND THEN PRESS IT FIRMLY DOWN so that it snaps into the CLOSED position, right? Otherwise it looks like the body is is out of whack.
Saw one just like it for sale had problems tho it was up for 3,500

I absolutely agree with the depreciation part, the low mileage and the well kept ones will hold their values and will start seeing the values creep up.
All you guys who can afford one now and appreciate it, will sell it off in a year or two. 20 years from now you'll be in your 50's and 60's and will reminisce and look for one to relive your youth years and end up paying 20 to 25k for one. My advice, enjoy it for what it is, sell it off buy another car to enjoy. When and if you get older like me, just reminisce because going and spend crazy money for a classic car is not good for the pocket book.
I was looking for an older 914 to reminisce, decided to buy a used boxster s instead. It's a better car than that stupid 914 ever was .

I almost just made this same mistake. Always wanted a 914 and found one owner car in upstate NY with 75 k for miles. The owner was up front and honest and admitted the car had t been used regularly for over 6 yrs. The care looked good body wise and tires were notably dry. Car was on battery maintainer and fired right up but began to smoke and smell horribly. . . Turns out a mice nest in the exhaust /heater manifolds. Dame half burnt mice flailing out the rear. On the 4 hr drive home it occurred to me that why do I want a 45 yr old car after seeing a Boxster. Still kick myself for not buying a 6cyl 914 back in 95 but while nother story. Love my 2001 I bought a month ago.

Tiptronic isn’t that bad if you put it in manual mode and shift whenever you want to. It’s pretty responsive to inputs. But if you leave it in auto mode then, yeah, it is pretty terrible.

Gen 1 986 ims failure rateis only 1%, much lower than the 2000-2005 failure rate of i think 7% of so...they published the class action lawsuit data so if u buy a gen 1,the ims is not too much of a concern

Depends a lot on the type of tires! Historically the Boxster hasn't been great in the snow being a rear wheel drive car with most on summer tires!

Just depends how well the previous owner has taken care of the vehicle. There are reoccurring issues that do tend to come up on the 9X6 cars.

Most definitely but would depend on how much is needed. If the repairs cost half the price of the car or more would give it some thought as you would probably never get the money you put into it back out of it!
