- The anti-theft system in a 2004 Saturn is suspected as a cause of a no-start problem. In this video the ignition switch is examined and a toggle switch installed as a possible solution for future problems with the Passlock VAT system.
Hey Man, hope you can see this comment. I have Saturn ion 2.2 2007, around 165,000 miles on it. Running into similar issue where saturn ion won't crank and has been on the shop for over 5 weeks. The mechanic can't solve this issue and trying to figure out a solution. I don't know if you are close to Indianapolis but if so, let me know if you can fix it, can bring it close to you. One side note, there has been a remote start installed on this Saturn ion. The issue issue rose right now on winter.
I'm going to try this on Monday. I don't know what else to do, I hate the passlock system- I really hope this works because I have literally tried everything else including new ignition switch and had everything checked from full diagnostics to battery drain test. I really hope this works, its worse than every- its a gamble every time I start my 04 Saturn Ion.

Good luck with it and thanks for watching. I installed this on an '06 and then never actually used it. The engine blew up and it was scrapped out.
@@TheOriginalMechanic So 3 weeks in, things are holding steady and working well. One strange thing, the Service Engine light stays on, as does the symbol for the anti-theft thing, but it has started every time without issue since I did this fix. I'm happy and so glad I found this video.

My issue was in my Saturn ion 2003 i ran the ac which cause the lock out system indicator to come on i took it to auto zone to ask if they knew what the car with the lock symbol meant as i wasn't sure if that's what it was and they told me they didn't know but they could run the scanner to see i went to start it up but the car wouldn't start i knew it was the security lock out so long story short after an hours of burning in the sun trying to figure out what it was i turned the key all the way on without starting it and left it like that for 10 minutes and tried and it turned on i went straight home

Just saw this video, and I am like the customer you are working on. I cut a white wire and my car still isn't starting. I am not the most proficient in wiring or electrical work. I don't know what I should do next?
What happens if my car starts but it's having the security system icon on the dashboard and when I lock my car my alarm keeps going off every 5 mins. And my inside lights keep going on and off like it's haunted. Rn I been leaving my car unlocked so that the alarm won't go off

Dude literally I have exact problem! My ignition won’t start in cold 20 mins my blinker does that when the pass lock acts dumb like this. And I’ve replaced the ignition switch in the back but still happens! I haven’t changed the ignition lock cylinder yet but I had heard there’s still a code only a dealership can wipe clean

I install remote starters for a living You don't want to do this It's a hack You better off installing a remote starter and learning the code It will start every time The light may be on but you won't be stuck It's the ignition cylinder giving you the issue there is a chip in the key and a magnetic switch that fails causing the lockout the only solution is to replace the cylinder pass lock or install a remote starter and it will start guaranteed
So I'm definitely considering putting a toggle switch on my '98 grand am ignition of which I haven't been able to start for years. It's a good all around car, but that anti theft system is 💩. I have 2 questions, does the car have to run for the toggle to work effectively or can you open the circuit and the car will start like it's supposed to? And when referring to that white wire on the Saturn, would that be the equivalent to the yellow 5v signal wire on the grand am/alero/Malibu etc? Thank you in advance.
As I recall you have to open the circuit with the switch when the car is running to get it to work. As to your wire question, IDK. good luck.

I have some problems with the ign. switch in my Grand daughters 04 Ion. What i need to know is the orange wire a constant hot lead going into switch? Is it 12 volts or 5 volts or does the ign. module you took apart reduce the 12 volts to 5 volts and send it to BCM. I don't seem to have any voltage at the wires going to the switch.
The orange wire is always hot (B+). You definitely need it back.
@@TheOriginalMechanic Thanks for the reply. I ended up changing the BCM I also put a new ign switch in. There are 5 wires coming from switch ...after doing so I had reference voltage of 5 volts on the white/black wire. I then went to do the re-learn procedure and nothing happens when I turn the key on and to start. No dash lights, no stater clicks, no sound of fuel pump running. I have found on a diagram that the 2nd white wire wire goes back to the BCM to a ground? The diagram does not show where the black, blue or orange wire go ..do you know where they go and what they they control ?
@@radtek2 Your problem is similar to one I struggled with on my son's 2004 Ion. the previous owner warned us of occasional starting problems related to security lock out. He had replaced the BCM. I found something else. The orange wire goes to fuse box. The diagram I found doesn't show blue and black but blue (I think) is the start crank signal that goes to the starter relay in the fuse box. I have a Saturn aura 08 and when I drive it for awhile and turn it off and try to turn it back on it doesn’t start for like an hour or 2
Did you figure out whats wrong with it. I've got a 08 aura with no crank no start.

@@thewrightsstuffall-out.8012try changing your starter. It’s pretty simple you don’t have to disconnect the Catalytic converter
Don’t cut any fucking wires. Do the 10 minute on 5 seconds off manufacturers reset 3 times. If the key won’t turn use some brake cleaner to clean all the metal flakes out of the key lock cylinder. Blow it out with air hose. Spray with graphite lock eaze. Or disconnect the battery and replace the lock cylinder but you’ll need to carefully remove the wiper switch out of the way to push a tiny screw driver or pick in the release hole on top of the lock cylinder while turning the key to the run position.
My car is in the lockout how do I get it off do I replace the switch ?
I've seen some good videos on this topic. I know there is a ten minute wait time for the lockout to clear but there may be more steps.

I installed exactly how u did on the video and it's still shutting off and I have to wait 10 min then it'll start I'm getting tired of this crap.
The '06 I installed this on is in the junkyard now (the engine blew up) and I never got to test it thoroughly.
any other advice, I tried this method for my 2007 Saturn Ion and no luck theft light still shows, I can hear starter engage but no crank
If the no start is due to the anti-theft system, I don't think the starter would engage. If you haven't, you might try a jump.

2006 Saturn Ion.... spent about 12 working hours using You Tubes “fixes”, but none worked. I took apart the Gizmo shown at 2:06, before going to buy a new one. (Be sure to take pictures as you take each piece apart. It is very intricate to get that little bugger together correctly!). Everything looked quite pristine , but there looked to be a lot of grease over the contact surfaces. I did a single wipe with a tissue, to remove about 90% of the grease. I then bent the two “leaves” on each side of the rotating pin upwards a bit, so the lever/pins would have slightly more pressure against the contact plate. Without having take pictures during disassembly, it took me about 15 minutes to reassemble -correctly. Hooked up to the wring harness - turned the key - and Bingo!
Just to add to my earlier post... the “leaves” are what you see at 2:33. I pried upward at the point where the base end of the levers start upward off of the Teflon base.
If you are reading this, take your ION to the scrap yard. Just get them off the road. Don't sell it to someone and pass on all these problems. Thank you
They arent a bad car, just some electrical/security issues. Its not like theyre unsafe. And really theyre the easiest car in the world to work on, plus the parts are super cheap! Mines giving me an incredible headache with the passlock being unable to turn off/relearned. Gonna cut the wire!
