  • Today we're on the range with our InvestArm Plains PIstol testing it's penetration and stopping power with some ballistic gel. In this test, we shoot this.54 caliber pistol several times into the ballistic gel block using GOEX 3F black powder.
I try 4 different powder chargers in this test, 15, 20, 25, and 30 grains.
This video includes slow-motion footage of the groundball hitting the ballistic gel at 240 frames per second.

Should remove doubts as to the lethality of muzzle loading firearms. Great video.

Thanks for your dedication to the promotion of Muzzleloading. You are doing a wonderful job. It was nice seeing you and your family at the Lake Cumberland 30th Anniversary Show last month.

When utilizing ballistic gelatine, it is imperative for the collection of accurate data to coat the penetration point of impact with cod liver oil to simulate the viscosity of human sweat, because nothing has a more profound impact on penetration than hair and sweat. Sweat sodium concentration in the average active person is about 42 mmol/L or 970 milligrams per liter of sweat. Combat surgeons have recorded those combatants who consumed meats preserved in salt had a higher post-surgery survival rate, and the famous SPAM study from WW2 and Korea confirmed this observation. This is also the reason that the blade of the fisherman requires more frequent honing than that of the hunter.

Fantastic! Yeah, what are the odds? It's a warm day for the season, here in Tennessee. I think I'll go out back, and send some smoke downrange, myself. Keep up the good work, Ethan. You're not the only one who loves muzzleloading.

Entertaining and informative--even for those of us who don't have a muzzleloader (yet).

If this pistol isn't rifled, then I think that buck and ball tests would be very interesting. Also a buckshot test. Were such loads often used in the early West? I seem to remember them being used in naval pistols, but those often around .69 cal.

So cool. The bounce=back or whatever you'd call it was fascinating. And no expansion, big deal... I sure wouldn't want to get hit with that ~223 grain sucker! Really cool as always!!

Gives you an idea of what it would be like going up against some of the big dragoon pistols that are into .62 and even .69 caliber. A roundball up close from a pistol like that would be devastating at close range.

My .50 cal pistol with 50 grains of 3f is a real beast of a hand cannon. I'd love to see you try some high power loads in the gel.

Those sights are surprisingly accurate! I had not expected that. Very interesting info. 25 grns seems to be the 'kick it in the butt' point for getting velocity / penetration. Do you have any chrono data?

Nice video. Are you lubing the patch? If you use lube the patch will have burn marks but not smolder. It is important because of wild fires in certain places during certain time of the year.

Does that have the fast twist? I'd be interested to see this test with some of the saboted pistol bullets like the XTP. Is that even an option with a 54 cal?
    Great video!
