  • Brian LaMaster is a master gunsmith, craftsman, and artist. He handcrafts early rifles and fowlers, offers fine restorations, and is an expert in Kentucky rifle styles. An appraiser, consultant, advisor, restorer, creator, and historian, Brian’s knowledge, experience, and work is highly valued.
A true enthusiast, Brian’s interest in all guns is lifelong-and he believes every gun, in any condition, reveals something to be learned. In addition to 18th and 19th century rifles and fowlers, he collects bags, horns, tomahawks, swords, furniture, tools, and Native American trade guns. He learned under the tutelage of Keith Casteel in Woodstock, Virginia in 1985, becoming a full-time master gunsmith in 1992.

Great interview, Ethan. Brian is a wonderful wealth of knowledge. Have spoken to him several times at the shows. I probably met Keith Casteel around the same time he did back in the 1970s. He got a lot of people into muzzleloading. Have to compliment you on doing a fine service to the future muzzleloading community. Keep up the good work.

In my club, the next younger shooter is my dads age and I am 27. I’m blessed to be around people with 50+ years of experience but does concern me the future of the sport

It's hard being 48 years old and when I go to black powder matches I am usually one of the youngest guys in attendance there by about 20 years. It's the same with a lot of the reenacting with few exceptions. I know when the local gun shop has a question about muzzleloaders that aren't inlines, they call me, even though less than 20 years ago this state was still a traditional state, sidelocks and patched roundballs only then.
