You guys need to do a build or Collab!
😂
Collab please! 🙏🏻

When he says the torque figures are exageratted due to the torque converter, he is not describing it accurately. The torque figures at the wheel are accurate and real at the wheels. The torque converter actually does increase the useable torque at the wheels, which is what actually matters. It may give confising results if you're trying to compare flywheel torque by measuring wheel torque, but when you're driving, wheel torque is all that matters.
For those wondering - a standard magic cup (3/4, strong latte) can fit in the cup holder, slightly propped up by a standard sized house key.
That's all that matters these days.
😂
"An expensive uncomfortable hilux."
Cracked me up. Nice call
gcm 7t not a hilux at all
well its true. why continue the landcruiser as a 4 cyl. if the hilux is basically the same motor and driveline and towing capacity
Bigger tyres will speed things up more, you’ll go slower downhill on the stock size tyres. ..
i thought so as well
And I don't know why you'd be working the clutch on a down hill decent either. That's the last thing you want to do.
The script gets messed up here and there on this show, but to be honest if your watching this for the words or advice then heaven help you lol
only reason why big tyres speed things up is tread. reality you have less torque. more revs at the tyre and less on the motor overall. stock tyres have less revs and more torque as more revs from the motor. whole reason why people lower gear 4wds to get the torque curve etc better offroad, especially low down on bigger tyres. my point is that yeah bigger tyres will have something better in the end of the rev range going downhill. but getting up and go will suffer with larger tyres and stock gearing.
I think Jocko got a bit dyslexic there for a minute lol
The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long
Word 👌
Lucky it's only 10% brighter
Engines are just slightly different than candles.
I've seen dozens of N80s and Prados with half a million k's on them, no reason the 70 would be any different
a fair observation, if you were comparing two otherwise identical candles....
Jacko has a point the 2.8L Cruiser is an expensive hilux.
With less of everything…why anyone buys a 1979 series is absolutely beyond me.
@@shanenorwell8580one word (substance )which is what the others don't have is why people buy them.
@shanenorwell8580 it was the v8 Ute. Toyota just killed it
@@shanenorwell8580 Mining companies use the Cruiser for underground and pit work. Those conditions kill anything else, Hilux included
Mining companies will buy the 2.8 hand over fist.
Well done on comparing 79 vs 79. Everyone else compares 79 vs 76, old V8 vs new 2.8. This is the only video I've seen so far that compared apples with apples of the same spec.
100% Jocko, finally someone had the balls to say it.
The Hilux and 79 are very different vehicles with different markets.
@simmo6035 not any more. Hilux lifted with bash plates and rear locker is ever bit as capable and has all the comfort and style. Same engine now. So I know what I'd spending my money on if it was not a v8. And I love my 76v8
@@tonycook2347idk why’d you’d still buy a v8 one, literally worse outdated engine
@mitchell5064 latterly, hey. Righto 👍
An auto has a torque converter?
Put the 8 on an auto would be the end of this ahahahah
As someone from the US, I have to say those two trucks look mighty sharp and if I were able, wouldn't mind either one. Though the turbo 4 might be more of the work truck than the weekender for me, but there is something about a nice v8 that gives that ample power without really needing to strain hard that delivers surprisingly excellent mileage.
I think we all would have liked to have seen the comparison after the tunes, if the customer with the white four cylinder would have been happy to do so; that way you can see the actual real world difference towing that 3.1t caravan. Seeing the torque figures on the V8 against the 4-cylinder would have been great too. I can only imagine that you can certainly tune more out of that beautiful V8! Good review boys.
Great video again boys. The thing that you’ve done which others haven’t is comparing a tuned v8 vs a tuned 4cyl. This is the useful comparison
Sorry Jocko but I do have to pull you guys up on something. It's about the down hill decent in a manual. Firstly you should never be using the clutch on a hill decent, Tommy probably just got things confused there. Secondly putting larger tyres on will increase the speed of down hill decents as the rolling diameter is larger thus you will travel a longer distance per revolution of the hub.
I'd love to see the 2.8 with an Auto Chiller installed.
I too was confused about their comments at that point of the video. I thought they may have been referring to the auto when stating that 1st gear was too fast and larger tires are better to go slower. I only have 33 on my 76 manual and the ratio is still slower than any vehicle I've owned.
You should never use the clutch on a hill decent? I kinda disagree with you. Depends on the terrain. Perhaps in this experiment the terrain is ideal for not using the clutch
In my opinion no matter what, i would still choose the V8
Ok why
@LopezZeta
Not working the motor as much. Loss of fuel economy is a bite in wallet, but the motor is likely to last longer. My choice is actually splitting the difference with I-6 N.A motors. A straight 6 is my choice over 4, v6 or v8.
@@LopezZetamore better than less, big better than small

Great review, a realistic review of how people use these utes. Much better than the typical Latte reviews
Hmmmmm this is a great video explaining multiple areas of the down and dirty.
Well done ✅

Very interesting. Thanks for the content. Love it.... Bought a new 76 in 2015 as my forever. Haven't changed my my mind yet after so many trips + a lap. Chipped and still running original clutch at 215,000kms. Only tow a large boat some times, but she loves it. It's not fast but loves a challenge. Buy a motor cycle if you have a need for speed.
My clutch said bye at 115, only exhaust and intake mods, stock fueling and boost! Seen many go much sooner. You sure you didnt get a detune lol?
It's amazing so many people overlook all of the shortcomings of a stock 70 series. Eg narrower rear track width, tiny cramped cab, drives like a truck and then throw a bank load of cash with upgrades and a clutch change to make them. Half decent. You would probably be better buying a Ram 2500 Cummins with a big cab and luxury.
Wouldn’t it be interesting to compare V8 and 4 cylinder if they both had automatic gearboxes or both had manual gearboxes? I guess we’ll never know the results of such a comparison… keep up the work Jocko!😊
Thanks lads🎉
I (an American) have no way of buying one of these in the states but I love seeing the changes and breakdown of new Toyotas none the less
Can't cheat physics, guys - something that works harder dies earlier. I'd hate to be a guinea pig for my hard earned money to see how long the 2.8 would last and how much abuse it can take before breaking. I'd buy a V8 and swap an auto in it - you guys sound like it's some big deal when it really isn't. I can do manual to auto swap in my garage, I did just that on 2 different vehicles already.
It's that simple 😂
You guys are taking the piss. It's 24k alone for the parts to swap an auto in. As someone who has owned a v8 70 for over a decade, the 2.8 shits on it. BTW. The 2.8 is also used in the coaster.
Once again proving. Bigger isnt always better. Great job guys
Loved your review. Respect from Namibia 🇳🇦. I own a v8 double cab and I love every bit of it
Mine option strap 2 of those straight 4s together you got an insane V8
4:34 shots fired 😂 great vid guys.
I love, the love to the Watagans in the video
i love my n80. as a trade vehicle its perfect around town and on the long jobs the comfort is great. id still love a v8 79 though
i will stick with my de-tuned v8.
Great review
I would absolutely love to see a regular 4WD-24/7 where Marty and Moog join them on a trip. Would be funny as.
They take the Kei-Tip and get winched through hell and back. That would be amazing.
the best 4wding channel on UA-cam wouldn't step down to the level of such plebeians. /S
No fucking way lol. MCM would be selling out if they did that lol.
Love the video, car you guys do a full compassion of the Ute based SUVs next. You guys started one last year but never finished it😢. Love your opinion more than anyone else’s, literally watched a fortune vs MUX video today and they never even put in 4WD.
According to Toyota the 2.8 in the 70 has the following upgrades over the Hilux and prado 2.8:
Larger radiator
Larger fan
Isolation crank pulley
Water air cooler
Larger steel sump compared to smaller alloy sump
Redesigned oil pick up for steeper angles
Engine Balance shaft
Revised fuel filter and oil filter
Stronger hoses and clamps for turbo inlet and cooler.
Gearbox has a larger capacity steel sump pan compared to small alloy
Gearbox has elevated breather with catch can
4.3.1 diff gears
Tow/haul mode.
So really not much except the transmission ratio to account for any performance difference. And that's not that much.
@@mikezog1030I think the balance shaft will make a big difference when working hard.
Also the larger capacity steel sumps are good. You don’t want shitty alloy and small oil capacity. Gearbox is beefed up . Also it is running the V8 transfer case, drive shafts and diffs.
Sad thing about the V8 is that with a simple base tune you can almost double the power but that's something else you'll have to factor into pricing as well the need for a clutch upgrade
Awesome video as always Jocko. My choice is the V8 with a manual transmission their becoming a rare breed.
Fitting bigger tires will increase the downhill speed (one revolution in a bigger wheel is longer than that of a smaller wheel).
Also, the manual v8 is far better in terms of engine braking downhill.
this was so far the best comparison of these two cars, thanks guys, if I was buying one of them I get 2.8l because I already have V8 and it will go to grave with me
Great video. I love a manual, so I'll wait for a 2.8L manual on a 70 series - hoping that will become available when Toyota scrap the V8. Reasons: The 2.8 is a simpler motor and easier to work on than the VDJ78 I currently own. And I like the manual when towing and when crawling in 4wd. No auto trans that overheats and you get to pick the gear you need. Great engine braking.
You obviously haven’t driven an auto in sports mode. You can choose to hold gears and consequently keeps temps down.
@@whiteunicornDR659 Yes. Owned a 200series for 7 years. Hated the auto and ATF temps can go very high when towing. Needed it in S4 for the torque converter to stay locked at above 85 kph and then it sat at 2400rpm at 100kph. Thats one reason I'm back in a Troopy.
Agreed mate I currently have a 2021 hilux n80 manual I absolutely love it good on fuel super reliable when Toyota said they were getting the v8 out of the 79 I thought they give the 2.8L in manual a go really disappointed
Thanks Robert, great comparison as always. Looking at the fuel economy it would be similar to your Ranger towing your van wouldn’t it? So, having the Ranger & the van, would you keep that or swap for the Hiace? For me it seems the better touring option is to tow the van, then drop it off for the more difficult 4WDing and just use the Ranger and a tent? Then tow the van for the moderate stuff?
13:05 fitting larger tires will make 1st low taller and even less engine braking going down hills
drinking game we all take a swig when they say Clutch!
A lot of guys are forgetting that the 4-cyl 1GD-FTV 2.8 has been in production since 2015, in numerous vehicles. There are thousands upon thousands of very high mileage 1GD Hilux and Hiace out there in Asia in particular, also Aus. The motor is proven FFS, its not as if this is a new experiment now that its turned up in the Cruiser! Jeez, its even used in the Hino 200 trucks and Coaster buses!
All this talk about how the 4-cyl will wear out blah blah, its just baloney. Toyota know what they’re doing, they’re not gonna go and screw the Land Cruiser reputation just for kicks. The V8 is old, inefficient and lazy. Time to move on.
I’d want the v8, but I live in the USA and cannot have a diesel v8 Toyota because Toyota is mean it it’s biggest client. My 1gr-Fe 4 runner has 343,000 miles with no problems just maintenance so I cannot really complain. I’m going to buy a v8 Tundra in the next couple of weeks but keep the 2005 4Runner and turn it into a modest weekend overlander for here in North Carolina, thanks for the video it was very informative.
Great job

Although i enjoyed Ronny Dahl's comparison tests, Jocko's test are more balanced. Apples to apples. Your conclusions are actually on point. It all boils down to personal preference, and not because one is better than the other.
Do you have any idea why Toyota did not use the V6 diesel from the 300 in these agricultural workhorses? 🤔
Its an oil guzzling nightmare....
So impressed with the Videos off all the serious UA-camrs giving us some feed back ,Im blown away by the 2.8 performance and think I would go for that than the V8 now.
Good video. It would have been good to see the torque figures pre and post tune.
Excellent video
So in conclusion the boiz luv the v8 noises when they have an exhaust 😜🤟🏻
we got a fleet of these in the US at a underground Trona mine.. ours have a 2.8 l Cummins "diesel" with a 5 speed .. so far so good. Our Ram fleet made its "some of them" 180k + miles with the regular wear and failures. be interesting how the toyota's do compared...
Best comparison i have seen on youtube between these two utes
Go the 8 for sure, like you said it may not be an option in the future.
Why did you not show the torque comparison?
I just wanna know how much psi they running in the 2.8 for that power
It’s close to 30psi
Yeah stock V8 gets up to around 8 psi.
00:01 Yes, there you go I saved you 24 mins!
Waiting here for all the Toyota V8 fan boys….😂
Cmon guys if you are going to tow a decent size van make sure the bloody thing is level you have always said towing requires the damn things are level to be safe that van is fairly front heavy and the front wheels on that dual axle are taking a fair bit of weight as for the rest of it not bad
Did they delete the dpf? Because there’s a couple of shots where it looks like there’s not one on there.
The quote I received for an automatic conversion on a V8 70 series was $32,000.
i love hearing the complaints about the gaurds. That system has been in cars since around 2010ish. The tall soft brackets are designed to cushion the initial impact to a pedestrian should they be unfortunate enough to land on the car in the event of an accident.
Wait to find out if Toyota releases the tundra with the 300 V6 I say
Great testing , best so far
A few questions
1.Where does tuning leave the oem warranty
2.Does it still meet emissions, i would of thought this would be regarded as tampering as you are changing the calibration from the OEM
3. Wouldn't you look at increasing the line pressure in the auto to help cope with the additional power
no 2, lol whut? Why would one GAF? You a greenie ffs? buy a cybertruck...
How much boost are they both running?
How was the fuel economy on them toeing the van after the tunes?
What R.P.M. do each make maximum torque?
Something I’d like to hear the Aussie perspective on, in the US the trend is the same. Toyota and all manufacturers are ditching the big naturally aspirated V8s and everything is smaller displacement twin turbo V6 and turbo 4cyl. There’s no doubt they make more power and tow better. But the big concern is longevity. How long will these smaller engines last with much higher compression and cramming a lot of boost through them? We all know the naturally aspirated V8s last a lifetime with minimal maintenance.
They don't care as long as most outlive warranty period. Its bs emission's requirements as well, not just the manufacturers fault. The old 4.2 six was better again, but emission's killed it...
@@dunxy You’re right for sure. Emissions are supposedly why we don’t have any small diesel options in the states. I think in a decade, the V8s will be very sorely missed when everyone realizes it’s a maintenance nightmare to keep a twin turbo V6 on the road after a couple hundred thousand miles.
The Toyota 70 series V8 in Australia is turbo charged
@@jasonhenderson8604 Yes, but surely much less compression and boost under normal ops than the newer engines, no?
What are the torque figures? Great video.
Impressive! Would love to know how much of the difference is because of the manual/auto situation? Would the results be similar if the 4.5 was an auto and the 2.8 a manual? Either way pretty sold on a 2.8 😆
Nicely done. 2.8 for me, better value for money
I still wanna get a 70 series Troopy -- is the engine/trans an option in this?
uhh, bigger tyres does not make the vehicle crawl slower.. 13:15
is it just me or is the rear suspension a bit too soft for towing the caravan (both vehicles)
Jocko... i bet you would love this 2.8 conversion in the pony.
Or the tongue weight of the caravan is too much.
The axles look a bit far back for my liking.
@@R.Sole88109 Moving the rear axel back on the 79 and air bag helpers would be sweet for big van $$$
Time to get a 100 series 2006 model on here test it out petrol v8
Longevity of the engine would be a consideration for me. What kind of boost pressure are they using, V8 v 4cyl???? Surprised you did not cover this when doing the tune. Is the 4cyl running much higher boost pressure than the V8?
I want to see a wholesale auto’s V8 automatic in the same testing
I jumped on here to make the same comment. Let's see it boys
Ronny Dahl has already tested his worked V8 against a factory 2.8. 2.8 smashed it. 2.8 used less diesel towing a big van than the V8 used not towing. V8 could only hold 80kph up steep hill. 2.8 held 100 up same hill.
That would be really good
$30,000 buys a LOT of diesel
@@simmo6035 he didn’t change gear in the manual, and an automatic v8 is a completely different thing., but hey I won’t be buying either.

Toyota Motor Corperacion Should Release the Land Cruiser 70, its Manual version With the 2.8 Liter 6 speed like the Hilux and that's it 🦾🛻🚙 and they should also release a new 6 Cylinder Diesel engine in line like the 4.2 1hz With the technology of the 2.8 1gd and that's it, I hope they do it in 6 cylinders in line and 6 speed manual 🙏🏼🦾🛻🚙💯 Greetings from Venezuela 🇻🇪 for Friends Jocko and Shaun 🇦🇺
If towing at what point to do you get a v6 ranger over a cruiser now? Be interesting to see the comparison. I’d still feel sick parting with near 100k for a 30 year old dual cab with speakers and an interior from the same era
I tend to agree, the 2.8L Cruiser is an expensive hilux. I just don't know why Toyota didn't put the auto 3.3 V6 in the 70's.
To prevent warranty claims on diiffs
Because the V6 would have made it so much more expensive. Toyota know what they are doing. There is a reason they are the biggest car manufacturer. It's very different to a Hilux.
Or imagine this, a 4.2 1hz like engine but modernised with higher hp and torque. Those engines are gods gift to the world.
Emissions requirements@@keqrou. Same reason the 4.2 was stopped on Patrol
@@harrykourbeis4292 still they work around it on every other diesel. As I said it would be a more refined version. A.k.a it would be more modernised with better more precise parts and better emissions. But now that I think about it that is what they do with every engine and then by the end of the process the modernisation ends up making it too complicated and unreliable. In conclusion, toyota needs to pull a Volkswagen
Nice of them to out a step on the front for when you're always fixing them 😂
How much boost we putting through that 4banger after the tune compared to the v8.
I would like to see the results of longevity of the 4 cylinder over the 8. A little less in performance but my guess would be the 8 cylinder out lives the 4 by a long shot.
I would love a review about the new british „Ineos Grenadier“ its pretty new and its said that its the new landrover defender
Great video but it confirms and strengthens the case for the Y62.
I’ve been watching Ronny Dahl compare the two vehicles for the last few months on his vids. The new 2.8 auto is better at almost everything apart from the sound and going down hills.
I still think the V8 has an X factor that could get me to choose it though despite the flaws it clearly has.
Wish we were getting that in the US
You should do a "Best Towing Vehicle" for heavy caravans and boats!
Glad that I prefer the 2.8 Diesel Automatic LC70 Double Cab anyway.
Need the torque figures before and after. HP is great, but torque is king when towing which most of the vehicles will be doing.
The before is easily looked up, and the after can be practically anything - depending on how fat your wallet is.
@@southerncharity7928 Totally, but all they spoke about with the tune was the HP figures. Torque is just if not more important in this instance. So whilst both had similar HP after a tune, i would have expected to see the torque comparison between the 2.8 and V8
V8 is about 410nm from factory and 2.8 is 500nm. After tuning you can see almost double that figure in the V8 and the 2.8 you'll see about a 20% increase
Edit: Double is abit of an exaggeration but you'll see an increase to about 650 to 700 nm of torque in the V8 with a tune
@@mikeda3643 They did give the torque figures? Look again.
Love my 2.8L
Good video, though from an agricultural perspective I would like to see you dive into vehicle longevity and why bigger engines that don’t have to work as hard last longer.
My land cruiser ute for fencing is 59 years old and my daily is 32. There is a reason for this we all know, would be good to explain to the public.
They don't dive into it because it's BS. It's a myth. It doesn't exist. Good for you driving 32 and 59yo cars, but look around mate. That's not the market, not the industry.
The majority of early 1990s cars are gone.
The average age of a car on Australian roads is 11.3 years. Cars are generally designed to last 15 years / 250,000km.
If the 2.8 does that, which it is currently doing easily in Prado and Hilux then all is well.
My daily is 29 years btw.
How did the tunes affect fuel figures?
Good ole Jocko having a dig at shauno with out even saying it 😂 , how's the pony ?
Regards the tune, no doubt the 4 cylinder is operating at much higher psi. Longevity concern?
I hear factory is like 27lb vs around 8lb! These milk bottles will not last.
2lt bi-turbo Ford rangers run like 40psi from factory 😂
Seeing as there is sweet f all between these and my prado in wait and first gen 2.8 longetivitey isn't bad at all
@@alienfromarea5115 mate i tried to get one tuned. No one will touch it. It's at its limit stock haha
Would get the V8 only because V8s are cool and sound great.
Yeah that’s the problem with all of you rookie yuppies these days. You don’t even drive them for the right reasons
79 series V8s are to V8s what Harleys (except v rod) are to V twins when it comes to sound IMHO.
Ol mate with the hat is an “Auto Queen”. I do respect the comfort of an auto though.
Pretty sure that bigger tyres would make the taller gearing worse and it would actually move faster in 1st low. Definitely need to mess with the gearing of using larger tyres and doing technical off reading
Id like to see them offer a manual GD version.
I would like to know how much boost each ute had from factory and how much boost once they were both tuned.
