The vent under the steering column was even in early 80's Toyota cars in the US. Delco, then a division of GM, was apparently working with NASA to provide cooling for astronauts in the 60's. The research showed that directing heated or cooled fluids to the crotch and the armpits was the most effective way to cool the blood and the body core. GM started putting the crotch vents in their cars, in the '60's, as a result of this.

I do like the 76, watching this made me thing, my 80 series does have electric mirrors, balls cooler, no hubs to lock or unlock, comfortable, not noise at all or rattles. Just maybe the 80 is one to keep as I always think on "upgrading". Nice honest review, thank you!

One thing you can admire about Toyota is their constant little improvements on their products. The GD engine has come a long way. I've noticed they're a lot smoother now compared to the earlier ones ('16 Fortuner vs '23 Fortuner). Can't say the same about our brand new Nissan (Terra), that thing has the engine of decades past still behaves the same since the day it was introduced (earlier Navara) lmao

I've seen other reviews where towing isn't very good with the 2.8, and they were towing GCM for long distances constantly as they would in a labourers job. The extra cylinders and cc's help when doing that type of thing, but it's horses for courses

The thing you.mentioned with the maintenance intervals...... Yeah, that isn't something new. If anything it's what we like to call Severe Service and just about everyone meets those conditions due to driving in extreme weather conditions, driving short distances, driving in dusty environments(Arizona for example) or driving Off Road. I wouldn't call it much of a Hack.
That all said I will certainly agree with doing maintenance to keep a vehicle going down the road safely and reliably.

There was a time when the roar of a V8 engine was more than just noise-it was a symphony, a heartbeat, a thrill that coursed through every vein. Every time you turned the key, there was a rush, a deep rumble that seemed to echo through your soul. It wasn't just about speed; it was about freedom, about the open road stretching out before you like an endless promise.
But time has a way of changing things, of softening the edges of what once was. The world started talking about efficiency, about the future, and the once-mighty V8 was quietly replaced by something more sensible, more economical-a 4-cylinder that, while reliable, never quite filled the void.
At first, it seemed like a wise decision. The fuel gauge moved slower, the emissions were lower, and the world seemed a little more in tune with progress. But as the years slipped by, something else happened. The memories of that V8 started to creep back, not in loud, boisterous ways, but in soft whispers of nostalgia.
You'd hear it in the faint rumble of a passing car, or in the way the wind whistled through the trees on a quiet evening. It was there in the smell of gasoline, in the sight of an open road on a summer day. And each time, it tugged at something deep inside, something that the 4-cylinder could never quite touch.
The 4-cylinder was practical, yes, but it lacked the soul, the character, the raw, unfiltered joy that the V8 had brought. The memories of that V8 became like snapshots from a childhood long past-moments of pure, unadulterated happiness that could never be recaptured, only remembered.
And so, as time went on, you found yourself missing that V8, not just for what it was, but for what it represented-a time when life was simpler, when the world felt bigger, and when every drive was an adventure. It became a bittersweet longing, a reminder that some things, once gone, can never be replaced. The V8 was more than just an engine-it was a piece of your heart, left behind on the open road.

The 2.8l will be a great setup for the "normal" consumer, the guys that overload and use the v8's outside the factory limits will struggle with a 2.8 and having it do the same work and lifespan.
Our hilux 2.8's struggle and often overheat when trying to do the same work as the v8s, I'm sure the new 79's will be the same.

I belief he's right, always so fatigued after a trip in our 76, that background rumble would have attributed to it, along with the wandering steering (white knuckled on arrival), the seats (very uncomfortable) and the infernal ride, yes after the hype wore off the despise moved in.
I do believe the new 2.8 auto would be a far superior vehicle but not swayed enough to go from our GU ZD30 CRC auto we replaced the 76 with. That 76 so turned us off ever contemplating another 70 series product.

@retepd1e you can't really compare the lc 300 to the fortuner. Lc300 is more luxury, alot more comfortable, alot more accessories available and can tow alot more than the fortuner .. we took the fortuner across Australia and can't fault anything on the car at all . Very capable on and off road ,fule consumption is amazing. But depend on your budget and what you gonna do with the car, also watch out for the gvm if you going to tow cuz they ain't much left in it after you add accessories.

So glad you mentioned that the seats in 2024 comfortable because I’ve been thinking why do people saying they’re so bad when my 2023 Troopy it’s got the most comfortable seats I’ve ever had standard from the factory in New Zealand.
Also brilliant that there was there air cooling to the seat area sick of getting hot bum and never understood heated seats .
I understand off-road the rear track should be wider for better off-road driving but in the past I’ve been involved in building hill climbing racing cars and three wheeler sports cars and they handled extremely well because the rear track was narrower then the front track width.
I wonder if you’ve noticed this between the vehicles you’ve widened the rear track on and your new 76 that on the open road the 76 corners better?

Do Toyota recommend a long trip of half an hour or more weekly at 80kmhs per hour to initiate a DPF regen burn, if you have been making multiple short trips such as a tradie may do?
Have had this issue with Hyundai iload vans, new DPF unit at 80.000kms and no indicator light to show when you are in a regen burn cycle, diesel in sump lucky not to hydraulic motor.

I have a Jimny with no intention to change it. But when the time comes for my wife to replace her Explorer I will argue in favor of the 76, no doubt. It is obvious one heck of a gods 4x4.

I really wish we got that engine here in the states.

Is headlight levelling really that revolutionary or just for Australia? I say this as in the U.K. anything with halogen headlights would have had a driver accessible adjuster switch by the steering wheel. This has been this way since the 1990’s. Anything HID or LED would have automatic headlight levelling to cope with loads or a trailer being hitched.

I’ve got a question mate. Have you got any experience yet with the new 2024 Land Cruiser Prado? I’ve been interested in it purely because it crosses over into that luxury space, but they seem to have shaped it much closer to the 70 and moved away from the ugly prado shapes from the last decade. I’m a lifelong fan of the 70, and I tow a medium sized boat. But I struggle with it as a daily driver, and always choose my partners vehicle when I’m running around. I’ve been considering that the prado, might finally be the combination of luxury, speedier towing, and decent off road capabilities I’ve actually needed, given I don’t do quite the same level of off roading that you do. Would love to hear your opinions on it so far if you have any.

James, rather than the Landcruiser Prado why not consider the GWM Tank 500, you will also save a long wait time and be $30k in your pocket.

Blows my mind they didn't match front, rear track width. And the dodgy wobbly bonnet.
At least general quality is ok, not like the new US Tacoma that has litany of major issues. Engine failure included.

Good review. Clearly the 2.8 is better than the V8.
Is the 2.8 an advance over it's rivals, such as my 2009 Defender 110 2.4l, also a turbo 4?
Well, the auto would be easier than my 6-speed manual. But I prefer the Defender's rear coils to the 70's leaves at the back, particularly when the 70s rear track is narrower than the front, which is dumb.
Both are utilitarian vehicles. Both have headlight adjustment.
The 2.8 is more powerful, but the 2.4 mostly does OK towing our van, including a recent 56 nights in Tassie.
I think the 70 is overpriced for what you get.
    I won't be changing.

Ronnie, it would be nice if you could compare the 2.8 between the 70, hilux and prado. Figure out how the gearing is different, what the advantage has one over the other, etc

I’m concerned about engine longevity in regards to it has same hp but more Nm, I always hold to the theory to make my engine last I’d rather a large cube engine with low hp to ensure she is running with less pressure on components!
For eg. I love my balless NA 3.9L perentie regardless of the 70hp, people regularly say one million km without blowing smoke! I might go turbo but only a light boost so I can do 110 and not 70 with a slight incline up being overtaken by road trains but nothing hot!

Few questions about the new 2.8L engine. Given the new 2.8L in the 79 series dual cab, what is there to really differentiate it from a Hilux? Except for styling and look. Does the hilux give you same engine and reliability but with a more modern interior and comfort? Does this move by Toyota start to make the 70 series utes more redundant?

As to why the 70 series didn’t go with v6 300 series engine.
And let’s be real, if the auto box came out in the v8 as an option would you or anyone choose the 2.8? I highly doubt it

Sorry Ronny, Toyota press release came out today. Can’t get any more V8’s in Troopy or Wagon which cease from Sept 24 production, only a very slight chance of V8 GXL in Single Cab and Dualcab Chassis, which continue into 2025 to fill existing orders.

Just watch that auto gearbox they don’t last broke hilux and FJ gearbox in South Africa would have been great if they put in a manual 6 speed box the autos can’t handle weight. Toyota here said the hilux broke because of the bigger tyres and the fj also same story and both had 100 000km when problems started.

Any visible control on dash when in process ,also when DPF in process you can safe to stop the engine or keep running? Thanks.
