I love how you both went so intently with your eyes to the screen when it started, you both know by now that you can't miss one moment of a Madonna video or you could miss what she is conveying, I love your reactions and just know, the best is yet to come !!! FOR REELZ !!!
Good to see you back, looking good and hearty with another fine reaction.❤ Madonna has had a checkered relationship with Hollywood. In 1984, she learned how to play its game and charmed it when she released her video of Material Girl. She moved residence to L.A., married one of its ‘bad boy’ idols in Sean Penn. She also wrote soundtrack music for Hollywood films then and appeared in Vision Quest (cameo role) and co-starred in Desperately Seeking Susan. In 1990 she released her video of Vogue where she paid homage to Hollywood Golden Age icons that influenced her. She also co-starred in Dick Tracy with Warren Beatty, one of Hollywood’s old lion and playboy with whom she had a brief romantic affair. In 1992 she appeared in the film A League Of Their Own. She continued to write soundtrack for movies. She also starred and won acclaim for her role in Evita in 1996. By this time she knows the ins and outs of Hollywood’s celeb culture and establishment that’s sexist, superficial and ageist that’s dominated by men, by the media and a conservative Academy that awards the Oscars. By 1998 ROL era, in her video of Drowned World/Substitute For Love, she has no illusions about what Hollywood is all about. By 2000 she had moved to England after marrying Guy Richie. By the 2003 American Life era, in this Hollywood song, she exposed and criticized the Hollywood facade, its ills, and its complicity for glorifying violence and war and for foisting to the public the pursuit of superficial values. She was shunned, shamed, and vilified for this, but she is a true artist, willing to pay the price for speaking truth to power. She may have her detractors, but she persisted and fought the good fight-and for this she has many more admirers.😊

Cannot wait for the next single/ video Love Profusion. It was released as a double A Side in Europe with Nothing Fails. Nothing Fails does not have an official video but is worth checking out as well as that was played on the radio in Europe and kind of was a single as part of the double A-side.

Fun fact: the album American Life was supposed to be called Hollywood. It was a last-minute decision to change its name. This song would be the first single but Madonna decided to use it as the follow-up to American Life. There is a making the video for it, made by MTV. It’s very interesting to see her interacting with her long-time friend and director of this video, Jean-Baptiste Mondino

@@s.tupper4159 So true. She said in one interview that it’s different in films where she appeared-where the narrative/screenplay, character roles and other film elements have been largely orchestrated by the film director, unlike in her music videos and live concert performances where she is expressing her own art and creative vision.
Ageism started to hit Madonna around this point form US Radio. After American Life, the song, fell quickly off the chart, radio was hesitant to add this song even though it was a bop. Funnily enough, this hit #2 in the UK and lit up the dance charts (there are some AMAZING remixes for this song that you should definitely check out!). The remix was used in the Re-invention tour.
"Ageism started to hit Madonna around this point form US Radio. After American Life, the song, fell quickly off the chart, radio was hesitant to add this song even though it was a bop." What a shame (at least the song was very successful in the UK though). Can't wait to see the Re-Invention version! ❤️❤️
It’s a great point about age and Madonna. I remember hearing “she’s in a race against time “ when she was in her early thirties. Her longevity has defied a lot of norms but it hasn’t come easy i.e. her recent health scare.
Agree with the other person that commented, love the hair Emily.! You are both spot on about ageism and expectations for female artists which Madonna seems to have thrown at her far more than most. She opened the Girlie Show Tour in London in 1993 and shockingly one of the reviews had calm down Grandma in the headline. She would have been 35 at the time. Utterly ridiculous. There are not many people in their 60s who still have the drive, energy and commitment that she puts into her work. There are a lot of 30 year olds that can’t match her either. I’m looking forward to your review of nothing fails, I think you will love it Brenda, but may need your trusty tissues ❤️

Great reaction ladies! 😊 In my humble opinion, you might want to react to Britney Spears music video for Me Against The Music featuring Madonna. It's the next release after Hollywood and I believe before the next single Nothing Fails. The Britney song is quite a fun bop. Lol
It's become such a no-win situation. If a "public" woman (and tbh even men, though still to a lesser degree) allows themselves to age naturally it gets a "omg...they've really gotten old" or "what happened? They used to be hot" But the opposite also happens. So much derision in saying "they've had a lot of work done" And even the same line of "they used to be hot" when someone has altered their looks to appear younger. This video relied heavily on the 1970s work of edgy French fashion photographer Guy Bourdain. His estate actually sued Madonna and director Jean Baptiste Mondino (he also directed Don't Tell Me, Human Nature, Open Your Heart, Justify My Love) for appropriating the images and settled out of court.

Madonna always pushes the envelope.... praise to the production designer for finding that swivel TV that is a perfect prop for much of her movement and dance. The culture has certainly changed in Hollywood since the Me Too movement, my husband is a costume designer for film and Tv and the behavior toward women especially when he started in the mid 90s, has drastically changed. Sexual inuendo, unwanted touching, etc. is no longer tolerated behind the scenes, and thankfully women over 40, 50 and 60 can still have amazing careers, even in front of the camera.

Looking forward to you reacting to the live performance of this at the MTV VMA'S. Not going to give too much away but put it this way it's iconic and kind of a Pop Culture moment
As someone else already mentioned the images and scenes in the video are recreations and homage to Guy Bourdain photos. Almost exactly. She was sued by his estate.
Binge watching your videos. Huge new fan. I can’t wait until you get to Madonna’s Confessions from a Dancefloor album in 2005. Some of her best songs ever - starts with ‘Hung Up’
It could have been just a catchy popsong but there is this underlying darkness and melancholy about it thanks to its lyrics. Great underrated album. This song hit #2 in the UK but did not even chart in the US due to the backlash to the American Life song and video. The album still went #1 in the US like everywhere else in the world and sold over 5 million, so it was a success but compared to what she did before numberswise, it was her lowest selling album up to this point. Fans who really get into it and the lyrics mostly love it though. There are some great albumtracks, stripped back, acoustic, almost folk, that are definitely worth listening to. It works well as an album imo. Just like with Erotica people could not handle the first single and video, so it overshadowed the whole album. Die Another Day remains her only US top 10 single from this era.
"It could have been just a catchy popsong but there is this underlying darkness and melancholy about it thanks to its lyrics." Great way to describe it! ❤️❤️ "Just like with Erotica people could not handle the first single and video, so it overshadowed the whole album." Really good comparison (and a shame that so many people missed out on some great songs).
Love this reaction, yes Emily is correct it's getting worse these days with the influencers! "Hollywood" is a great song but I always imagine a far better video for it. This video is only okay, I only love when she's in the black dress and seen with the maid. Re-Invention Tour is her WORST tour 😂😂Bland and milquetoast, except for a few performances. Holy hell I'm gonna have it ROUGH for many days then, help me Emily and Brenda 😂
@@rol_rob2603 “low budget tour”? Not at all. After her debut 1985 Virgin Tour, all her succeeding world tours spent lavishly on state-of-the-art staging including audio/visual/lighting technology; multi-media backdrop/screens, costumes, the best dancers and back-up musicians, artistic/music/choreo directors, a small army of technical, administrative, marketing and security staff-that she had to hire, take along the tour, pay for their travel and lodging. For this 2004 Re-Invention World Tour the initial cost of the stage alone was $1mil ($1.663mil adjusted to today’s inflation rate). The logistics and costs to transport the staging equipment included a jumbo cargo jet and several 18-wheeler semi-trailer trucks to haul the equipment from city to city of the tour. A technical crew had to set up and dismantle the stage for every venue of the tour. She had to rent out concert venues, pay commissions on ticket sales, spend for rehearsals, and free promo mini concerts prior to the main tour. Her elaborate production is one reason why her world tours are successful in terms of attendance and ticket sales.
You still have about another 40% her content to get through. Thats how proflic she is. Plus i think love profusion is next. Personally i think its one of her most underrated songs, lyrically it's brilliant.
Funny thing about this song is that Madonna forgets the lyrics almost everytime she performs it and she even admits to do so, that's probably the reason it was only used as an interlude on the Re-Invention tour 😃There's also a behind the scenes video of making the music video floating around the internet, she was suffering in some scenes due to various reasons😃
@@OurAnxiousReactions I've found it, there's this 1 hour long version ua-cam.com/video/Qgsz02cYvzA/v-deo.htmlsi=DXqcWCV7DUObcTM4 and turn there's a shorter ~20 min version as well, if you write 'madonna Hollywood behind the scenes'

She said in one interview that it’s different in films where she appeared-where the narrative/screenplay, character roles and other film elements have been largely orchestrated by the film director, unlike in her music videos and live concert performances where she is expressing her own art and creative vision.
❤️❤️
Ageism started to hit Madonna around this point form US Radio. After American Life, the song, fell quickly off the chart, radio was hesitant to add this song even though it was a bop. Funnily enough, this hit #2 in the UK and lit up the dance charts (there are some AMAZING remixes for this song that you should definitely check out!). The remix was used in the Re-invention tour.
"Ageism started to hit Madonna around this point form US Radio. After American Life, the song, fell quickly off the chart, radio was hesitant to add this song even though it was a bop."
What a shame (at least the song was very successful in the UK though).
❤️❤️
Aww, you're very kind - Thank you! ❤️❤️

Even at 35...So crazy.

Thank you for the heads up on the tissues! ❤️
You should react to Madonna performing nothing fails from this album on MTV live on stage. It's a great performance . You will love it and the song
Thank you for the suggestion! ❤️❤️
Great reaction ladies! 😊
In my humble opinion, you might want to react to Britney Spears music video for Me Against The Music featuring Madonna. It's the next release after Hollywood and I believe before the next single Nothing Fails. The Britney song is quite a fun bop. Lol
Aww, thank you! ❤️❤️
And thank you for the recommendation too!
It's become such a no-win situation. If a "public" woman (and tbh even men, though still to a lesser degree) allows themselves to age naturally it gets a "omg...they've really gotten old" or "what happened? They used to be hot"
But the opposite also happens. So much derision in saying "they've had a lot of work done"
And even the same line of "they used to be hot" when someone has altered their looks to appear younger.

Thank you for sharing the info about the photographer as well! ❤️❤️

Right? That was perfect!

So wonderful to hear - Thank you for sharing that with us!❤️❤️
Great thoughtful, intelligent reaction as always! Thanks ladies ❤❤
Aww, thank you - You're very kind! ❤️❤️
Great song! I like this video but the MTV VMA version is soooo iconic!
Ladies thank you once again for a great reaction.
As you mentioned you will be doing reactions of the specials for this era…I’m sure this one is in the list but PLEASE react to the Meghan Mullaly interview. The interview was filmed shortly after Madonnas guest appearance on Will and Grace and it’s spectacular! She describes the album and her procreating it precisely! Please check it out. On UA-cam there are 2 parts.

not released as a single but i hope you check out easy ride from the album.
Amazing song
The next sungle after this was NOTHING FAILS, unfortunately it has no video, but it is one of her best ballads. Need to check it out.
This song never clicked with me, but the remixes are great! Especially Oakenfolds. I did love the blonde look in the Hollywood video, but the rest of the looks were a big miss for me. It will be fun to watch your reaction to the MTV VMA performance if you guys watch that. 🥰🥰
Looking forward to that MTV performance! ❤️❤️
Looking forward to you reacting to the live performance of this at the MTV VMA'S. Not going to give too much away but put it this way it's iconic and kind of a Pop Culture moment
❤️❤️
As someone else already mentioned the images and scenes in the video are recreations and homage to Guy Bourdain photos. Almost exactly. She was sued by his estate.
Amazing video. Really artistic. The Jacque Lu Cont remix of this song is amazing!! You will listen to when watching the MTV performance later 😀
Binge watching your videos. Huge new fan. I can’t wait until you get to Madonna’s Confessions from a Dancefloor album in 2005. Some of her best songs ever - starts with ‘Hung Up’
Aww, thank you! We're so glad you're here with us! ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions you are awesome
Can’t wait until you watch and listen to ‘Hung Up’ from 2005 - Madonna is in full happy dance mode
"It could have been just a catchy popsong but there is this underlying darkness and melancholy about it thanks to its lyrics."
Great way to describe it! ❤️❤️
"Just like with Erotica people could not handle the first single and video, so it overshadowed the whole album."
Really good comparison (and a shame that so many people missed out on some great songs).
Idk about the worst tour, I always liked it more than Sticky&Sweet
I saw the reinvention tour live and it was jut amazing.
@@arrividerci17Reinvention Tour to me always looked like low budget tour
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️

We've got you - You can do it! 😂😂❤️

“low budget tour”?
Great video
❤️❤️
Emily, love the hairstyle
Aww, you're so sweet - Thank you! ❤️❤️
I love Madonna’s face in the 2000’s especially 2009
You still have about another 40% her content to get through. Thats how proflic she is.
Plus i think love profusion is next. Personally i think its one of her most underrated songs, lyrically it's brilliant.
"You still have about another 40% her content to get through. Thats how proflic she is."
Amazing! ❤️❤️
We'll have to find that behind the scenes video - It sounds intriguing! Thank you for sharing that info with us! ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions I've found it, there's this 1 hour long version ua-cam.com/video/Qgsz02cYvzA/v-deo.htmlsi=DXqcWCV7DUObcTM4 and turn there's a shorter ~20 min version as well, if you write 'madonna Hollywood behind the scenes'

mtv live performance with Britney-Hollywood live-that is the real thing pls watch that-you will see why…
Love this reaction. You are watching her best era in terms of creativity .
Aww, thank you! ❤️❤️ Really looking forward to the rest of this album.
Just one thing to say: that hair pulling.

Some information about this video. It recreates frame by frame photographs by the photographer Guy Bourdin. The photographers son sued Madonna for the blatent theft of his father's work.
