Madonna adopted 4 of her children from Malawi. Her foundation, Raising Malawi, sponsors orphanages and has built schools and hospitals, among other efforts in the nation.
Madonna was one of the very first celebrities to speak out against HIV/aids. She has been a solid advocate throughout her career. No surprise that she’s adopted four children from Malawi that had been devastated by this virus. All four children were orphaned because of aids. This led to her charity, Raising Malawi, and the building of a children’s hospital and school. Watching this countdown was somewhat disappointing due to the choices made. This one I definitely applaud. Watching this on video does not even come close to what this was like live. My jaw was on the ground the entire time. Well done guys. Great review.
I made this list and just picked my favorite personal performances from hers, not necessarily the best or one representative of all she can do live. Sorry to let you down. What would you have chosen as your top 5?
I'm so ready for Madonna month, or Madonna year to cover all her tours 😊 it's interesting to see the cohesive stories on her shows (since The Blond Ambition Tour) not only one song, and also the evolution of her amazing shows.
This is the song that got me hooked! Now 52 and not a day goes by that I don't not listen to Madonna. She is my happy place. Her songs are my story in many ways ❤
She lost so many people in the 80’s from the AIDS crisis and that’s when this song came out, the lyrics are meant to be from the perspective of a person on their deathbed. She’s changed the perspective of the song many times, in this case to the recurrent crisis in Africa.
Being from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, I too watched so many people around me die of HIV AIDS in the early 00’s. 💔😢 Thankfully with government programs (in mid 00’s), Antiretroviral therapy (ART) meds are freely available and many now live with HIV leading normal lives though still suffer through corruption and dictatorships across Africa. As stated by another comment, Madonna has consistently used her platform to raise AIDS awareness in the late ’80s and early ’90s during the height of the crisis whilst losing many close friends of hers. She’s always been our champion of equality and LGBTQIA+ rights. 🩷 Thank you for your reactions! Best wishes from Vancouver 🇨🇦
"Live to Tell" was the first cut from "True Blue" Album, and it reach the number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 in June 1986. "Live to Tell" is a song by American singer Madonna from her third studio album, True Blue (1986). The song was composed by Patrick Leonard as an instrumental for the score of Paramount's film Fire with Fire, but Paramount rejected it. Leonard then presented the track to Madonna, who decided to use it for At Close Range, a film starring her then-husband Sean Penn. Madonna wrote the lyrics, co-composed the melodies and co-produced it with Leonard. "Live to Tell" was released as True Blue's lead single in 1986, by Sire Records; afterwards, it was included on Madonna's compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990), Something to Remember (1995), and Celebration (2009). A pop ballad, the song includes instrumentation from guitars, keyboards, drums and a synthesizer, while the lyrics deal with deceit, mistrust and childhood scars; Madonna also recalled in an interview that she thought about her relationship with her parents while writing the lyrics.
She was excommunicated for the second time by the catholic church for this. And what I think is so badass is that she's literally saying "here we have this very serious political and social issue that is causing SO MUCH PAIN to so many people and we are doing nothing about it, but at the moment I put myself on a cross with a crown of thorns y'all can't help but pay attention and condemn me for it", which was exactly what happened. Absolute genius.
Watching this tour live was a dream come true. The audience during this number was incredible emotional. The song means so many different things to so many different people of all ages for a hundred reasons, but we all were and are still moved by her all the same. That is pure magic.
This whole show is epic, it's a story from beginning to end. Every song leads to another. Madonna not only sends us this message, she actually adopted 4 children from Malawi in Africa and builds and invests in hospitals and schools, amongst other projects she does to help people, especially children.
The confessions tour is probably one of the best shows I've seen to this date. Madonna at her best, with great songs from that amazing album, great mixing with older hits, great visuals, video edit and messages... I still enjoy rewatching the whole show from time to time, so I recommend you to check it for yourselves.
Everytime I see this performance of Live to Tell during the Confessions Tour and Like A Prayer from the Sticky and Sweet Tour, just brings me to tears. So powerful in her performances. So powerful in their respective mixes. So powerful in the imagery she delivers.
This is the BIG difference about Madonna and the others pop stars out there... she have always something to say and open people eyes about difficult issues, even if that makes her unpopular...like you said, she believes in something and go for that
I still can't believe I saw Madonna live in Copacabana - Rio de Janeiro. It was the best night of my life, and she performed this song, very emotional moment.
G'day it's Steven from Down Under again Great reaction gentlemen, it's great that younger generations are embracing the artistry of Madonna. ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF POP!

They need to watch the Celebrations Tour, it will blow their minds!!!!! LOL Better yet watch all 12 of her Tours, they all are amazing to see. If their question hasn't been answered, the countdown is for how many people have died of AIDS and still counting. This song is a tribute to those people in all her tours.
This might be my favourite Madonna song I've heard. I love her voice in this performance. Her vibrato is amazing in my opinion and I love when she sings in her lower register.
Hello, greetings from Chile, I think there were some performances missing that were very good, like sooner or later at the Oscars, like a prayer Madonna Sticky & Sweet Tour, future love confession tour etc....😊😊
So many amazing performances that I would have probably put ahead of some of these like Hung Up from Confessions Tour and La Isla Bonita from Girlie Show.
I just subscribed, guys!! Great reaction!! After you watched Madonna’s performance, you started to inquiry out and discuss about HIV crisis situation and that’s exactly what Madonna wanted to cause with her brilliant performance!! ❤❤❤
In 1990 a news reporter said that “Madonna was responsible for a lot of positive dialogue and she never gets the credit for it” ….how many years later and she’s still got us talking x

You’re totally right, it’s about money 😢 by one hand, money that pharmaceutical companies earn from diseases like HIV, they don’t want to help people, they just want to earn money, that’s why in Africa the HIV crisis is still a big issue 😢
Dude, actually in United States and many parts of Europe; the medication is so advanced that I have friends that when they got tested; their T-cells were so low that they were diagnosed with AIDS. However, because they were not at a severely advanced stage of AIDS; the were able to reverse their diagnosis from AIDS to HIV and their viral load even became undetectable When an HIV positive person becomes undetectable; it means that they have such a low amount of the virus; that it is almost impossible for them to transmit the virus to another person. In other words; it is a shame that while powerful countries such as the USA are thriving when it comes to AIDS research other countries with lower resources are still operating at the level of the AIDS crisis in the 1980
Na Celebration Tour desse ano ela canta essa música e nos telões mostra fotos de várias pessoas famosas e não famosas no telão que morreram por conta do vírus. É muito emocionante e pesado de ver
Epic! But would have been amazing if the cross had moved along the stage. Rotated at the end of the stage, moved backwards again and then transitioned to the next song as it did.
Many people didn't get the message here, not even some fans she has. In the performance, she's telling the catholic Church: you're doing nothing for those who suffer and die, and the Bible is saying quite the opposite.
The Vatican tried to have her concert cancelled in Rome for this part where she recreates Jesus’s crucifixion (they didn’t) but was a bold choice indeed. Long live the Queen.

Madonna always uses her art as a platform to spread awareness. The most recent version of that song performed live was a very emotional tribute to AIDS victms all over the world.
You all kinda sounded nervous about talking about HIV/AIDS - lol- I've been HIV + since 2009 and I appreciate the try. In African countries it is extremely difficult to obtain meds for ANYTHING due to corruption and politics. Don't get that nervous haha. I got ya!
Oh God....I have a LOT to say. I'll apologize now, but my inner HIV/AIDS educator switch got tripped. I've seen some say the number behind Madonna was how many total, how many per day, etc. No. That was just for African children being orphaned due to HIV/AIDS, not enough food, not enough money, and not enough of everything these kids need. It was partially right. The biggest misconception I heard was that once you have AIDS, that's it. I know someone who was diagnosed with AIDS from the beginning due to not knowing something was wrong until he'd already had it for 8-10 years. He's never had the "luxury" of being HIV+. That was with a 6 months to a year prognosis. It was also in 1996. I'm happy to say he's still kicking, even though he had 4 T Cells and a viral load of 750 thousand plus. A healthy person should be upwards of 500 T Cells and zero viral load or VL. They measure it by how many copies of the virus are present per ml of blood. His was higher than the tests could read. So, in a way, yes. Once you get AIDS, that's it. He will never have HIV, even though his VL is undetectable and he has a better immune system than I do. I personally think that needs to change, the same way they quickly did away with horrible first acronym, GRID. Gay related immunodeficiency. Globally, we are around 40 million infected currently with too many deaths. I quit counting those decades ago. It's depressing and not good for trying to encourage people to live. The thing most people don't completely understand is that the worst part of HIV/AIDS is the stigma. You'd think over 40 years later, there would be MORE education, but there isn't. The education clearly needs to continue, or the virus will rise to peak numbers again. Anyone who doesn't remember or wasn't alive needs it so badly. We, the ones that were living in that bubble, remember everything with clarity that still chills me to the bone. Also, yes, you are correct that Undetectable equals Untransmittable or U=U. We've gotten that far. We still need to go so much further. Having the disease can wreak so much havoc in your body. It worries me for those who are long-term patients. How bad of shape will their bodies be in when the cure does come?
i'm HIV+ and i'm undetectable... wich means i can not pass it to other person.. but if it happens that you're were on the AIDS status.. depending of your health, if you're not having serious problem with deceases associated with the AIDS status well you can definetley become HIV + and be undetectable. taking the right combinations of medications. but yes.. it's all about money.
She does not get the respect she deserves from the younger generation, they talk too much about how she looks instead of all her achievements and what shes done for charity.
Guys, you need to watch whole Confessions Tour show. She's the greatest entertainer ever.
🎯FACTS
Yes, I saw it twice in Miami and it was just the most incredible concert show ever. Madonna cannot be touched by any female artist.
Her ability to shove the church’s hypocrisy in their faces is epic. This left me in tears at the live show !
I cry every time I watch this. Hits every time. The messaging is just that powerful.
Madonna adopted 4 of her children from Malawi. Her foundation, Raising Malawi, sponsors orphanages and has built schools and hospitals, among other efforts in the nation.
Exactly, that's why the government of Malawi gave her the Honorary Citizenship
