Paradise is so transcendental and melancholy takes me to a weirdly spiritual place.

Listening this album in 2000 was quite a wonderful journey. Nothing sounded like it. The production and uniqueness was ahead of its time. Music, Impressive Instant, Don’t Tell Me, Paradise…all in full glory. Gone is easily one of her best ballads. Glad was able to see her vision and awesomeness of this album live in the Drowned World Tour in 2001. This album, just like American Life, still sounds fresh. Only Mirwais and Madonna.

Nobody's perfect is my all time fave Madonna song. The live version is also epic! Paradise and Gone are also right up there ❤
Beautiful album. She has been experiencing so much with the production over those years choosing so wisely the producers. Less mainstream, so much ahead of the curve. So many people really don’t understand what she’s done.
These 3 succeeding albums: 1998 Ray Of Light, 2000 Music, and 2003 American Life are among my top 5 all-time fave Madonna albums. A couple of gems that I initially overlooked due to her more popular mega hits that she promoted, have finally caught up with me, have made my top 10 all-time fave Madonna songs: Gone (from Music) and Nothing Fails (from American Life).
Such is the depth and luxury of her prolific songwriting and artistry that she didn’t do any music videos for these songs, but they’re like time-release hidden gems that overtime they blossom, are rediscovered and get the attention and acclaim that they deserve. Appreciate your insightful reaction to these albums.

You always brighten my day with Madonna, Johnny! I especially love your reactions toward the end of the album during Paradise (Not for Me) and the higher register at the end of Gone. You always hear those little magical nuggets in production that help make a Madonna track soar. Seeing the Celebration Tour in two weeks and can't wait... Cheers!

Gone is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Great lyrics too. Epic vocal.
I couldn't get enough of this album when it came out! I loved the experimentation and the fact that she didn't make another Ray-of-Light-sounding album. (BTW, Ray of Light is my favorite M album,) She is so innovative and always moves forward artistically.
this album... it still feels fresh and new, and so experimental and beautiful. So many great tracks... Gone, Paradise, Impressive Instant, Runaway Lover, Amazing, Don't Tell Me, and obviously the title track. Yah, pretty sure I Deserve It is about Guy. Rather sad when you know the marriage failed, but at the time she was so in love and hopeful that she finally found the right 'guy'. What at tool he is. Maybe her worst ex aside from Vanilla Ice. LOL... but 'nobody's perfect'... lol

Actually with her lyrics "I have been so high, I have been so down, up to the skies, down to the ground" she left nothing to say to any artist, male or female, she has done it all. She is awesome what a great song, what a great album shall never be forgetten.
Best album with American life
I’m not sure if you seen the video to “ What It Feels Like For A Girl “ but if you haven’t you should check it out because the video version it’s completely different from the album version and the video was directed by Guy Richie

Paradise was my favorite in this album, unfortunately it has never been release as single.
You mentioned the interesting "stop start" editing on the intro to 'Don't Tell Me'.
I remember listening to this album on the day of release in 2000, and when it reached that song, I thought my Technics CD player had broken!
This apparently was the intention, and I'm sure it wouldn't have the same affect if hearing for the first time today via digital streaming.
Interesting also is that that song is pretty much a direct cover of a recording made by Joe Henry, who I believe is married to one of Madonna's sisters.
Ha! I thought my CD was skipping. I actually ejected it and cleaned it twice before I realized what was going on! 🤣

From what she said at the time, Mirwais was the reason for all of the vocal treatments (or in the case of songs like "I Deserve It" the lack thereof). She said they wanted to explore the extremes - totally bare vocals with no reverb and lots of Auto-Tune. "Gone" is one of my favorite Madonna songs - it just feels like a really personal summation of her life in the same way "Live to Tell" is. I always assumed the line "Why should I feel sad so what I never had?/Noting equals nothing" was about dealing with the loss of her mother.
43 here, been a lifelong fan and this album just happenning to coincide with when I first started smoking weed was such a wonderful moment in time lol. Her experimental albums are my absolute favorites still.

I think Music is my favorite Madonna album. Love her production with Orbit and Mirwais. Amazing is my favorite track

Paradise (not for me) is the masterpiece of the album and one of Madonna's greatest song. Music and Nobody's perfect are quite exceptional too ! My three favorites of the album. But I love Gone very much too and I deserve it has a special place in my heart as it echoes with my encounter with my husband. As a matter of fact we have a part of the lyrics of the song in our wedding rings.

@@bridgethegapreactions No problem ! He has "This guy was meant for me..." in his and I have "...and I was meant for him" in mine. (You can't have much engraved inside a ring unfortunately so that's the best we could do). Quite simple but a symbol for us. ;)

A beautiful album which was ahead of its time back in 2000. Music was a uk number 1 and American Pie and then beautiful stranger which was from an Austin powers film.
So 3 number 1 singles from this era alone in the UK

I remember thinking the synth between 0:26 - 0:33 reminded me of the synth used in “Cars” by Gary Newman when I first heard this.
Even though it was unfortunately Madonna's final US #1 hit, Music STILL sounds so incredibly fresh, innovative, & unlike anything in the pop landscape 25 years on. An undeniable hit. I recommend Cyber Raga.
I'd often wondered about the lyrics of "Don't Tell Me"-"take the black off a crow" etc, but it's one of the few songs post 1986 that she didn't write a word of. Came to her as a complete song (totally different style) written and produced by brother-in-law Joe Henry, whose wife Melanie (Madonna's sister) either sent it to her, or played if for her at Thanksgiving (or so the story goes). Henry's original "Stop" was released later and you can hear it online. Madonna kept the lyrics but completely re-wrote the melody and Mirwais added the "Sweet Home Alabama" stop-start production. As Henry said, he wrote a song, she turned it into a hit.

Wow . I listened to this album over and over when it came out and then kind of forgot about it (heaven forbid) . Forgot how ahead of its time it was .

Loved your reactions to each song . Madonna did a Spanish version of “what it feels like for a girl” obviously for the Latin market , she must of practiced her Spanish for some time , because it sounds beautiful 🥰 check it out
