Madonna has always been criticised for her every move. But at the same time she has been the inspiration of so many artists out there. She was a trailblazer and is now paving the way for older women in music. Society expects women to become demure as they age, like Barbra did, or Liza, but Madonna is showing that age is but a number. And once again she’s being critiqued for that. And when we look at the pop scene today we can clearly see that nothing would have been possible for women artists if she hadn’t paved the way for them.

The world will come to appreciate the rare figure that is Madonna who has not only shaped the landscape of pop culture but has also defied the very forces that have destroyed so many others, A revolutionary artist, woman still challenging norms and breaking boundaries, both as an artist and in her personal journey.
She has been criticized mercilessly, yet her conviction, the power of self-belief, her determination, grit, and talent are the reasons she still remains, evolving and reasserting her place, moving the conversation forward who redefine the music industry. She persisted, and is the symbol of empowerment and autonomy.
Other iconic figures, like Elvis, Marilyn, Michael, and Whitney, and many others haunted by their demons or fell victim to the pressures that lead to tragic endings. Madonna, has remained in control of her narrative and her legacy will be one of survival, reinvention, and empowerment, contrast to the tragic fates of others.

Madonna has lived an adult life of wealth and privledge many will never know. But she has supported and loved many groups, me included as a gay man, and her vulnerability in this makes me cry every time I see it. Today would have been my mom’s 74th bday and Election Day. Thank you ladies for posting and keeping Election Day stress at a minimum. Hugs and appreciation from Michigan 💙💙💙💙🌈🌈🌈🌈

I’ve noticed two things, one is very telling during this speech, men in this audience do not clap for her,and two, till this day when I see any post on Madonna, 90% of the hateful, vile comments and judgements are in fact from woman. It’s crazy to me that so many woman in 2024 don’t recognize or support a woman who has been fighting for their freedoms, for the last 40yrs are so happy to think in a patriarchal way. I do love this speech, just wish it had not started off so confrontational and she had worked her way into it, but that’s just me.😊❤

No matter what she’s done and accomplished; many still focus on her sexuality, rather than the achievements! She’s a trailblazer and has broken so many barriers for other women in the industry, but also women all over the world! She’s a legend and will be even more revered when she’s gone!

Madonna’s speech was a concise clarity, powered by decades of lived experience, was an important and moving thing! The music industry has progressed in leaps and bounds when it comes to its treatment of women. She’s never been a puppet, she very outspoken and that clearly irritates the status quo. She’s a fighter, a humanist, a living legend.
She’s my daily inspiration. So much respect for this woman. 🫶🏻

Thank you so much for this reaction, as always. We are so glad and fortunate to have you two as reactors (spelling?).
Anyways, this speech is a perfect example of how Madonna seperates herself from other artists. It almost feels like everything she says has been heavily studied because each and every word that comes out of her mouth is extremely clever, and this goes for every interview or appearance she has done. Although she’s most famous for being an artist, she has this whole other side of her that is completely compelling and intresting. Everything she has done has made an impact, on men and woman, old or young, and for that she will always be my eternal muse and person of life. I will love her as long as I live, and I will cherish every moment that she’s alive. Although I’m only twenty, it feels like I’ve grown up with her.
Long live the queen of pop, and thank you again for all of your reactions. I speak for everyone when I say we cherish you guys as much as we cherish Madonna. Love from Stockholm, Sweden ❤️

Despite her unfathomably amazing achievements, Madonna continues to be universally misunderstood - (in my opinion) because the thought of a strong, talented, unapologetic woman remains so frightening to so many. The world is a very scary place!

Madonna was ahead of the feminist movement of 1992. They failed to realize that her expression of sexuality was for her pleasure rather than for the pleasure of straight men. Madonna's embrace of her own sexuality for her own pleasure greatly appealed to gay men who felt validated by her courageous stand relative to their similarly condemned expression of gay sexuality. Madonna became a hero to gay men and enlightened women alike and it is sad to see how much pain she experienced for her incredible defiance of the status quo. Will always love her for it!

A very moving and motivational speech
Having watched and loved Madonna throughout her career, I have seen the hate ,sexism and ageism thrown at her. She is still a human being with needs and feelings and the need to feel loved. I have witnessed the love given by her many true fans which totally outweighs all negativity generated by narrow minded people that are missing the whole point of her message(s) throughout her outstanding career.
As a fan for 40 years I stay thankful that she is still doing what she is doing.
There will never be another Madonna ❤❤

Hello Emily and Brenda. I didn’t see that coming, I was expecting calmly your Confessions Tour reaction, and you bring us this emotional speech of hers.
Well, I can’t add anything that hasn’t already been said before about her speech, but I can tell you that from my “privileged” position as a man in a patriarcal society, I try to encourage my female peers and relatives to fight against what people have to say about them.
Every now and then I come to watch this speech because it’s inspiring and makes me feel full of hope thinking that if people listen to it will understand women point of view; unfortunately there is still a long fight for all women in the world, but as many other men I stand by you.
Many thanks for this ladies, lots of love from Barcelona! ❤️

I want to show this speech to anyone who has spoken negatively about her, to prove how wildly misinformed they are, and that you should never judge anyone, because you never know what kind of internal struggle they are suffering. She is a light in the darkness, and a pioneer for womens freedoms, that bleeds into the luves of women of all ages today. If only people could be so openminded to that, and to the fact that even if you're a celebrity with a platform, you still have feelings that can be hurt.

I don't know if you already saw it, but there is another Madonna interview at the Brooklyn museum in 2017, where she talks with another guest (Marylin Minter) and two interviewers about art and their personal experiences as artists and women. It's a long video but I'm sure you'll LOVE it, it is a must in my opinion. Thank you for another great, timely reaction. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen this speech now - and every time it never fails to move me. There’s something about the clarity of the message and the vulnerability with which it’s delivered that makes it so powerful. I love that it’s still provoking discussion 8 years later whilst also hating the fact that it is, unfortunately, still relevant today.

I'm 2 days late to this reaction.
    All apologies.
Her speech there, the pure truth she spoke,
is powerful as it was palpable.
Given everything that has happened here
in the U.S. the last 24 hours, her speech
and your reactions hits, and it affects me
in a way that has hot tears streaming down
    my face right now.
A mix of sadness and pure anger.
As a biological cis male, I have no
explanation as to why men have forever
made sure that women experience the
worst of the worst. It BAFFLES me.
I can only speak for myself,
I do my personal best to go against
    that patriarchal doctrine and behavior.
For better or for worse, I treat women as my equals.
    Sigh.....

I think the part that hit me hardest was when she said she wished she had a peer she could look to for support. But no. Madonna blazed these trails almost single-handedly. She put all women on her shoulders and carried them through those walls she was breaking down and the doors she was kicking open. There were almost zero female artists at the time that stood up for Madonna.

So glad you covered this 2016 speech. How she coped, fought through and succeed despite this experience she narrated is what makes her life story so compelling and amazing. You’d think these entrenched bigoted attitudes she’s had to experience and deal with throughout her life and career, that women encounter in some form or degree, would mellow out over time specially with supposedly progress made by the women’s lib and feminist movements, but no, it’s as potent and alive today. Women who are smart, ambitious, talented, accomplished, assertive and outspoken will always elicit a backlash from both men and women who feel threatened. This bigotry was the seemingly impenetrable glass ceiling that Hillary Clinton faced in 2016 when she ran for President and she experienced the full dosage of this same misogynist, sexist, vile shaming and rejection from her opponent, his followers and other segments of American voters. I’m writing this on this day November 6, 2024 and likewise Kamala Harris running as President was subjected to the same hate, prejudice, racism and rejection by her opponents both men and women despite the fact she was championing causes and programs that would benefit the common good. With these setbacks, it’s tempting to give up faith on our fellow humans, but I realize the right path is ultimately to continue to believe in our common humanity, the better angels in us, and the need to look past our gender and racial differences. ❤your insight and reaction. Thank you.😊

extreme feminism scares me- women should not be judged for wanting a career, wanting to be sexy, wanting to be covered up, wanting to be at home with their kids, for voting for a certain candidate etc. isn't it all about freedom? very sad.

Yes, it should be about freedom and the right to choose our own path. Big hugs to you! ❤️❤️

It is worth noting that Madonna incorrectly name dropped Camille Paglia here as saying she "set women back" when in fact Paglia said multiple times the exact OPPOSITE. Camille in 1990 was the only academic writing about Madonna in a serious manner, famously calling her the "future of feminism" and lauding her as a role model for young women.
I think Madonna got her mixed up with some other feminist critics who at that time hated her and who Paglia herself was in direct opposition to. It is frustrating that Madonna would misquote her because Camille is the one critic who understood Madonna's genius from the very beginning (and could explain it better than Madonna herself could ever explain in words). Her essays ("Venus of the Radio Waves" for example) and interview snippets on M are ESSENTIAL for any serious M fan.
