ROL era was on another level. A friend and I left the office to get to the record store opening to purchase the CD when it dropped. There were so many headlines “can Madonna still do it?” Well she totally answered with this amazing post-Evita return to the charts with a whole new direction for her sound. Possibly her best work. Notice the early days of CGI in this video with the shape shifting. She was always on the cutting edge.

I've been waiting for this girls, thanks :) Frozen is definitely an event. In 98 NOTHING sounded like Frozen on the radio, nothing, not at all. Frozen is deep, dark, magical. Madonna is unrecognizable. Try to connect Madonna from Express Yourself with Frozen and you will fail. Madonna on the desert sand sucking into her hands the darkness of the desert night, the darkness that leaves her apathetic, cold. The orchestra is absolutely stunning. From now on, Madonna is on another musical level. Enjoy the Ray of Light Era...it's amazing.

This was considered one of Madonna’s many “come-backs” . I think it’s her best work vocally and lyrically. She was awarded several Grammys. Huge commercial success with 2/4 singles were massive hits. Great videos for all 4 singles and one of my all time favorite ballads. The deep cuts are amazing too. Worth revisiting after the tour.

As a lifelong M fan…40+ years now, I sincerely respect the thoughtfulness and comprehensive approach that you’ve taken with this journey.
I have loved this song (and album) since its release, but I’ve never really considered the idea that she might be writing about the collective “us” in this song. Interestingly enough, it REALLY makes the most sense, when considering where she was in her journey/life. Thanks, for discussing this, and opening my mind/eyes to this. So insightful.
You’ve truly become my go-to reactors for Madonna, it’s been fun to see you both discover M’s impact and creative mark on the world.

Back then Madonna had her own label, Maverick Records, to which she signed some big acts, like Alanis Morissette and The Prodigy. So, Madonna had been working on a new album with Dallas Austin but she didn't want it to sound like a part 2 of Bedtime Stories, so she wanted The Prodigy to produce it. They said no, which was bold of them, and so Madonna turned to a new artist she had signed: William Orbit. They had collaborated in the past in remixes for Justify My Love and Erotica. He had just released Pieces in a Modern Style, which Madonna liked very dearly. Also, this was a moment when Madonna was searching for spirituality, so she turned to Kabbalah, Hinduism and Yoga. Frozen uses what she learned from Hinduism and she has mentioned that the lyrics came to her while she was practicing Yoga and meditation (so Brenda is very right about her feeling). Ray of Light was considered a renaissance moment for her, the album was praised by the critics and the fans. Sorry for being so talkative but it's hard to give the background in this album in a few words!

    • @OurAnxiousReactions

Thank you so much for this background info on the song and album! ❤️❤️ It really helps to know the inspirations and ideas behind the music (So interesting that the lyrics came to her while practicing yoga and meditating!). Ray Of Light was the album, especially after Evita where she finally got the critical acclaim she deserved all along. It's on numerous Best Albums Of All Times lists, won 4 Grammys, 6 MTV Video Music Awards and pretty much every other award in the world too. Sold 20 million copies and its not even a straight up pop album, it's not very mainstream for the most part. Standout in her incredible catalogue which says alot. She released 5 singles with videos from this album in this order 1. Frozen 2 Ray Of Light 3. Drowned World Substitute For Love( outside of the US only, i think) 4. Power Of Goodbye 5. Nothing Really Matters
    They are all incredible.

Its forward-thinking, experimental and stunning! As you rightly said, this album was made after Madonna had her daughter and it reflects the awakening of a new side to her! Every video from the album has a very different feel, but all the songs are equally as polished and wonderful as frozen with great production from William Orbit! To think,
the original filming location was supposed to take place in Iceland. Madonna rejected that idea because she thought it would be too cold to film
there, so the Bonneville Salt Flats in the
    California desert was the compromise.
Watch the video for "Come To Daddy"
by Aphex Twin. When it first came out,
it was a very polarizing music video.
So much so, it got Madonna's attention,
which she ended up collaborating with
    it's director Chris Cunningham.
    Unfortunately it's Madonna's only video
    collaboration with Cunningham.
Despite that, it's a beautiful music
video, which matches the song Frozen..perfectly.

For an opening single, it's like, hey wake up, Mother Madonna is here. Her insight into motherhood on this record is profound and raw and spiritual. And she is so strong but vulnerable at the same time.
The trip-hop electronica flourishes by William Orbit coupled with her spiritual insights into motherhood marry together for Madonna's most complex album, lyrically and sonically!

A theme that feels consistent across a lot of Madonna's lyrics, abd which is evident in this song, is the co-mingling and conflation of themes of personal extacy (the joy of the dance floor or the extacy of intimacy/sex) with spiritual extacy. They are one and the same and she will use metaphors of one to talk about the other. Her lyrics speak to both personal experiences as well collective truths. Its so profoundly beautiful!

She does this song on selected live shows for the tour, in others she does Rain( which i saw, i think she did Rain on the entire European leg), sometimes she does Take A Bow. She just has too many hits.
This is a standout in her catalogue, so is the whole album. You'll hear two more singles from this album on the tour but im not gonna say which ones^^

Madonna’s vocal training for Evita made this album amazing. This is the first album where I loved every song.
Sidebar: The symbol on her palm is the AUM or OM. In Hindu it is *the* most important symbol. It symbolizes the Universe and the ultimate reality.

Hi There - Love your shirt Emily..
The movie 'The Sheltering Sky' inspired Madonna to create the song 'Frozen', which was filmed in the Californian Desert. She incorporated influences from Moroccan and Indian culture, as well as her practice of yoga, into the music video. In the video, Madonna aligned herself with the Greek Goddess Hecate, known as the goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, the moon, and dogs. Madonna also shape-shifted into a black bitch and black ravens, representing Hecate's association with black female dogs. Hecate is represented trimorphic hence three Madonna's (like one is not enough in this world lol) - This song was released during Madonna's prime, as she was on her spiritual awakening journey, exploring various religions, spirituality, and belief systems. Looking back, it is clear that she was at her peak, and the memories of dancing to this song at nightclubs in 1998 while working in London bring back nostalgia.
I get butterfly's in my stomach when you bring up the Madonna concert - not long to go. Enjoy your day.

Oh sweet mamma mia, I’ve never ever thoght of the two similarities between Bedtime Story and Frozen videos. And let me tell you, I’ve spent so much time of my life watching these two videos that I’m embarassed to tell 😅 How it never occured to me that there is this blond long hair, white clothing, white doves and then this video with all black everything, long black hair, black clothes and the crows. Well you really figured that out right away.
I remember when the radio played this for the first time. It was so exciting because the radio station had been advertising they will play her ’comeback’ song on a release day. And then they played it and I was in a car, had to turn the volume really high and then there were those first loud drum beats 😂 I remember jumping because I thought what happened. Anyway, loved that sound and that whole style from the very beginning.
By the way I recommend watching Much Music Canada interview, it was filmed during the promotion of Ray of Light album and I think that is such a nice, good interview in front of her fans.

Frozen is a great one. I vividly remember hearing this on the radio for the first time and I had never heard anything like it (had never listened to Techno). The only other M song that I heard that gave me that ‘awe’ feeling beside Frozen was the first time I heard Justify My Love in 1990. Madonna was everywhere in 1998 and this song was stuck at #2 for weeks behind All My Life by KC and JoJo. Incredibly beautiful song and video. Thank you again for sharing your reactions with us. 🥰🥰

Hello, Madonna presented the world premiere of this song in Italy at the Sanremo Festival1998. There a curious fact happens, she was very tense because she presented a completely different song from the musical period of that period plus she had not come out for 4 years with her original music. The authors of the festival had asked her to do a little sketch with the presenter, but she said no.Only after her performance and having heard the audience enthusiastic did Madonna change her face light up and surprisingly make the planned sketch. Except that the presenter wasn't prepared and didn't understand anything and I didn't speak English I sent Madonna away saying thank you we have to go on, with the people from home who were snapped

Hooray! I always call the mid 90’s Madonna’s identity crisis period when she was stuck in ballad purgatory trying to make up for lost ground to Celine, Mariah, and Whitney.
Even though this album was still pretty syrupy and demure by her standards, it truly felt like she got her groove back on this one. So glad you two are getting into this era before seeing her on tour.

G'day girls, yes we have made it to Ray Of Light. You are right, the birth of Lola led madonn to question the values she had and what life means. what she wanted to teach her daughter. So jealous you get to see the celebration show. We in OZ miss out again. But hey saw the girlie show, rebel heart 2x and saw her one night only Tears of a clown show in Melbourne. Just a side note Re. closed captions on this video. if you click on the CC button under the video, you can turn them off. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that this was the single chosen to inaugurate her post-Evita era. It contains the string section sound and her new found vocal abilities from the movie, but also a very fresh and modern take on electronic music that would add a whole new color palette to the Madonna sound. Love your interpretation of the song, Brenda. And yes, this is just the beginning of yet another amazing chapter of her career.

Great reaction! One of my favorite tracks and videos from Madonna, and I love how different this is from anything else she's done, or anyone else has done! Hope you both enjoy Madonna's Celebration concert as much as I enjoyed seeing it in Inglewood! Something I wasn't prepared for was the fact that the venue was on the warm side because air conditioning effects Madonna's vocals, and the preshow dj music is really quite loud with lots of bass, so I would suggest bringing some ear plugs to have on hand to muffle, just in case! But what a once in a lifetime experience you both have in store for yourselves - enjoy!!!

Lovely reaction! It’s so fun to experience these songs through the eyes of new fans who seem to really understand the Madonna journey. That’s what makes her so, so interesting is if you know the whole story and everything she’s done and explored in her work… it’s just a literal phenomenon.. and I definitely feel that this song and so many of her others can be read on a global scale. This song and video in particular, if someone forced me to pick, would be in my top 5. Out of a career of 10s this is way up there lol. *side note- I’ve always thought of this as an electronic meditation ❤. Sorry for the long post!!
