    An excellent public spot I started at a long time ago was smedley park. It's a great spot to take kids to go garnet hunting. Most of the garnets are on the smaller size and almandine a deep dark red garnet. However, smaller garnets have the natural octo-shape to them. Some of the sandstones the garnets are in, are so soft you can pry them in half and find the raw untouched garnets. It's a great place to start and a ton of fun if you have kids. If you want gen quality pyro red garnets you are going to have to look/ask around elsewhere.

    I live near Shamokin PA and I've been dying to go crystal hunting, but I don't know where to go, but I'm hoping there's a place nearby. However, I'm not really familiar with what's around me as I moved here about four years ago from the Reading area so this all new territory. Unfortunately I missed out on some great crystal hunting in southeast PA. 😢
    Anyway, if anyone knows this area, could someone please direct me to place I could go looking? I'm literally only yards away from the Shamokin Creek. Could there possibly be something to be found in and around it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Garnets don't usually flourence red. Usually, they are inert. But rubies and spinel flourence red. I'm curious to know what they are. Have you lab tested one?

    • @tophermohegan9797
      @tophermohegan9797 Рік тому +1

      Did he use a UV light? Because I never seen one kimosabi. He was just using his phone light for spot and a mini LED torch for internal transparency/translucency as well as color. You're definitely right though on garnets not containing florescence, but the reason isn't really the Garnet persé rather the concentration of Fe(iron) which as you may know nearly smothers any florescent activity/properties.

      He said it’s a secret location. But if I were you, I’d look at the geologic map of your area and look in stream-beds down stream from outcrops of metamorphic rocks like schist. A lot of times, the geologists who make the maps will describe the rock units in the legend and include things like “garnet bearing micaceous schist” and so forth. Good luck, hope you find your own source.
