- I'm getting really close to finding the source for these garnets, hopefully on the next trip up there I'll find it. I was quite surprised just how big those garnets were and they are actually the biggest ones i have ever found. Thanks!! There is potential for even bigger garnets or even some other minerals if I can find the source. it rains like crazy up here but it really makes you appreciate the days where the sun comes out. Hopefully this whole virus situation will settle out this spring in time for some traveling.

Have you ever watched the "Magic Miners" UA-cam channel? They do a lot of prospecting in California and found some amazing garnets too.

Thanks!! I try my best to keep my finds in matrix whenever i can. It shows where they come from and gives a glimpse of the deposit to the collector.
Roxbury is the jam for garnets all over the ground as big as dimes.

Thanks!! I'm sure they can be polished to reveal the deep red color and shine them up a bit, these ones still have mica included in the outside of the garnet as the conditions weren't quite right to form them. Once I find the source hopefully I can find some nicer ones or I'll find enough to give polishing a try.

It is so big I didn't know that Garnets get that big. It's like grape..! The place is so nice it is kind of meditation very nice to see in morning with cup of coffee. Thank you!
I've heard of garnets getting up to 5 lbs in some places. You just need the right conditions, the longer the heat stays in the schist while being metamorphosed the bigger the crystals will be.

Nice garnets. I have a friend that found a garnet the size of a baseball. I shit you not! My single biggest garnet is 196 carats. My friends garnet has got to be easily 700 or 800 carats easily, as theirs is about 4 or 5 times bigger than my biggest one. I have 11,300 carats in total garnets myself. You look like you're over by walker valley, tbh. I know there's an area over there you can find garnets. Also near Heather lake. All the garnet you're finding is alluvial. Its being eroded out of ancient stream beds probably 15 to 20 feet under over burden.

Be on the lookout for any chatoyancy in those Garnets. It is common belief that Star Garnets only come from Idaho, but in reality titanium oxide (Rutile) can form anywhere. I have seen Star Garnets come from North Carolina (where I was born and raised). Star Garnets are not limited to Idaho.
For sure!! I'll definitely be on the lookout for the asterism, would be super cool to find some nice star garnets or sapphires!!
@@NWRockExplorer If you look at Caver461's videos of Corundum he is finding a lot of black sapphire and in one video the top and bottom of the crystal is almost gold colored from the amount of Rutile in it. There is definitely Star Sapphire and plenty of it in Canada.
@@NWRockExplorer also some of those black Sapphires are actually translucent with no cracks in them, so that would make for a pretty expensive stone if light passes through it and it is over 20 carats
@@Nervii_Champion A friend of mine even found an awesome deposit of corundum and some of his had some nice rutile inclusions, I love the growth lines that sapphires can have too, just super neat!! That's a once in a lifetime discovery though, I hope someday I'll come across something so amazing!!
I work at a Star Garnet mine in Franklin, NC. That first biggest garnet, if you look at it, one side is flatter than the other. If you grind the rounded top, that’s where the Star will be.

Those are getting so big. You got some nice soft rock to work there. You must be used to it, but I would avoid that creek for all the devils club there.
Yea the devils club kinda sucks, all of the woods around here are covered in it so I've gotten really good at weaving my way through them haha. Whenever you are searching for garnets it is always best to find the softest flakey schist you can find, usually in these spots you find the most well formed crystals.

Thanks!! i actually never went to a single geology class though i think it would be a fun experience. everything i've learned came from watching other peoples videos, reading geology reports and joining Facebook groups. I research every rock i find, along the way i find information on other rocks i've found and it keeps on building from there

I don't generally like to share locations until i have explored them the best I can. Most of the time i like to encourage people to make discoveries and explore their area, there is always something to be found as long as you follow the indicators and have a basic idea of the geology.

I'm not on the island but I hope to explore around there someday. I've heard lots of rhodonite, dallasite, jaspers, and flowerstone is found down there.

Are those gem quality
Most in this location aren't gem quality but they can make nice specimens. i do have a spot a little ways from here for gem quality ones but they are not very good for specimens. maybe i'll make a video collecting up some gem quality pieces at some point.

These ones are a little too nice of specimens for me to want to polish them but I might give it a try if I can find some more😁

I don't think so, there could be gemmy sections inside them but I'd have to polish one up to find out. Hopefully when I find the source they will be better quality because these ones were exposed to the elements for quite some time.

It'd definitely a possibility, these ones kind of remind me of the ones they find at the little pine garnet mine. some of the garnets there get up to 5 pounds.

BC Canada is the closest I'll say but I try to share the information needed to explore your area to find new spots. So much land out there to explore!! there are honestly cool minerals no matter where you are, just need to find a spot where they are more concentrated. Best of luck out there🙂
