In the early 80's I did some work on a new house being built in the Cowee Valley. The backhoe digging the footings pulled out a pocket of rubies with enough gem quality material in it to pay for the cost of the house.

If you didn’t own the mineral rights on the land I personally wouldn’t be advertising it online for the actual owner to find out to come after their “stolen property rights” on the minerals. Awesome to get lucky like that and I would’ve probably done the same but protect yourself and don’t advertise crimes/possible crimes.

My Aunt and Uncle owned a Ruby mine in Franklin, NC. I used to go visit every summer. I’d go to the mine with them and pan for rubies and sapphires. We used to have jars filled with them. In Jackson County, NC, on my grandfather’s property, we used to find garnets on top of the ground. Some would be as big as golf balls. I miss those days.

I lived in Hayesville, on a mountain near Lake Chatuge years ago. We would rock hound the sunken corundum mine. Water level was extremely low that year, a drought, so we got a lot of garnets, rubies and emeralds. Thank you for sharing your video. Happy hunting!

Year's ago I managed a school kitchen, a fourth grade girl came into the kitchen with this huge beautiful red rock and says, "look what i found at my grandmother's house on school break last week!" Well it was more then just a rock! I asked her if she knew what a ruby or a Garnett looked like and she said no. I told her she should ask her mom to take her to a jeweler in town that I know and ask him to look at it. It turned out to be a 3lb ruby she was carrying around in her backpack!

As a couple other people below noted, those two around the 4:00 to 5:00 mark may have quartz coloration (or lack thereof), but the shapes definitely look a bit more like sapphire than tessin floaters. I have a beautiful property on Pinch Gut Creek just a stone's throw from Propst. The recent rains and this wet spring have blessed me with so many beautiful crystals, lil crystal clusters and lots of gorgeous bloodstones, my personal favorite. I'm in love with the mix of greens and reds they are popping! I have multiple tumblers running 24/7, I'm rockhounding every weekend now the weather has turned and it's into the high 80s. Hubby can't keep me out of the water! I'm almost ignoring the quartz crystals now in favor of the beautiful bloodstones, I'm sure you would be mad at me 🤣🤣🤣. Keep at it guys, there are so many beauties to be found in this area! Nice finds guys!

You could also design some sort of a cover or portable tent or something so that you can block the sunlight and use an high-power UV light so you can easily spot the UV-reactive ones. Those people apparently have a corundum conundrum in their backyard . What a nice mystery or problem to have. I'm not a serious or knowledgeable rockhound, but I have done it for fun. Since corundum glows under that particular light, do some people dig at night while using the light ? Looks like they'd be easier to find if you did that.

If you find a perfect pristine crystal that has amazing clarity, there is nothing else to do really except wrap it in gold or silver and wear it as it is, or put it away somewhere. I haven't been to Propts in years but found stuff every time I went. My best find there was a 4" long tapered one. I have seen piece's that had somewhat "gemmy" spots in them but the best one that I ever saw was found many years ago and part of an old collection that has been since handed down to a grandson of the deceased owner of the collection. This piece was found in area on the property that is not open to collecting anymore. The piece was a yellowish barrel shaped corundum about 1 1/2" in length x 3/8" in width slightly tapered crystal that was translucent in the lower half and completely transparent in the upper half. This was one of the few transparent ones that I ever saw from there. The collector who had this was very trustworthy and honest and I had no doubt of its authenticity. He had dug many Propost corundums in the early days of the site and had only found three like this. The others sold off long before and this was his only one. Another collector who I once knew was also a fixture at Propst many years ago once should me a diamond, yes diamond that he found on the property. It was supposedly way on the back of the property and again, he is deceased as well and his collection dispersed at auction some years ago. With that much corundum on the site, it isn't surprising that diamond, garnet, quartz and other minerals are there I think that most people aren't looking for anything other than corundum so it often gets overlooked and is not easily detected in the thick clay.

Hi Brad, as you may or may not know diamonds are found in very specific conditions like kimberlite tubes. It would not make sense for a diamond to be found in this type of area, unless you know something that I don't diamonds should be far away and very deep usually.

Hi I had a question, how would you know where to start looking for rubies like this ? My brother in law has 11 acres near by, how would I know where the best place to start digging ?

  • @rohantherockwiththerocketh7871

Do you find any gem grade pieces or are they more like bombs?

Are any of those worth faceting? Just curious what a facetable ruby looks like.

If I owned a place like this I'd get a giant UV light over my dig site on a nighttime wonder if it would work? Be fun too as I'm a night owl!

Yeah, that would be a great idea! I would have a little bitty machine in there, digging them up and spreading the dirt out and just hitting it with the light, it would be epic!!!

@@TheCrystalCollector like the old fashioned potato planters for farming with a little roof!!
Should come up with a quick Google search!
They cut open the ground, plant and cover it back up! I'm sure the little round planting bit could be taken out and just a light on the inside of the roof! 😹😹
Heard me like it's actually an invention 😹😹 I do think it would be a fun idea!

Corrundum also firms hexagonal spindles in the train habit.
How many sides does that single have? 6? It's corrundum, not quartz..

Are these gem quality, the type that could be faceted and then set in a gold or silver mount?

Wouldn’t it be easier to dig at night with the uv light?

If Brian hadn’t had a blue T-shirt, I could almost mistaken him as part as the diggs. Hahahaha It’s been a while but thank for this video my friend.
