I Tried Buying the Most EXPENSIVE Fishing Rods in my Tackle Shop

- G.Loomis NRX+ rod review. i purchased 2 of the most premium bass fishing rods on the market, the NRX+ 872 and 852. I've used these rods for about 3 months and I give my initial opinion about both rods after trying multiple baits, different lines, and numerous techniques with each. the results, so far, might be shocking.
I have the Expride, NRX, and Orochi spinning rods. For me and my style of fishing, they all fish fairly similar. They're all sensitive, light, and cast well. Its just 2 of them cost half the price of the NRX. If I could go back, I'd just buy Exprides and call it a day.
great to know, thanks for the information! I will definitely have to try the Expride spinning rods it sounds like.
Or dobyns rod check them out
This is helping to keep my temptation to buy the NRX+ NRR. I’ve been using my Expride 7’ MF for everything, but I want the “best”.
Most people don't tend to pay retail for a rod, so the price given isn't what the average fisherman is paying out of pocket. You can get them up to 25% off if you're patient. I purchased the G. Loomis NRX+ Jig & Worm Spinning Rod 802S JWR 6'8" Medium with a Daiwa Exist reel for my dad for way less than retail. Also, since you build you own rods, there's probably quite a bit of bias. Any time somebody grows, cooks, or builds something they think there's is the best but when it comes to blind tests the results show differently. Regardless, nice video! :)
I have fished with alot of rods and from my experience and personal preference I can say no rod is worth over $300. The sweet spot for quality and sensitivity is around $200-$300 and anything above that is not worth it. Once you cross that $250 or so mark the diminishing returns above that are astronomical. You would pay hundreds more for something that's 10% more sensitive and maybe a 1/4 ounce lighter. Good video bud and I agree the NRX+ are great rods but so not worth the $650 price tag. You can get 2-3 good quality rods for the same money that will come within 75% if not closer to NRX's performance. Shimano Poison Adrena and Shimano Expride is about as high end as I'll currently go and am very happy with those rods. Still fish a bunch of rods from Cashion, Phenix, ALX rods and Denali in the $200-$250 and really like those too. Sold all of my NRX's and Megabass Destroyer P5s and have no regrets.
The NRX+ 852S is my 2nd favorite NRX+ rod, the 1st being the 901S which is an absolutely SICK marabou hair jig rod 👍😎
NRX+ are such sweet rod. I just loved mine so much. I won't let anyone use it beside myself.
Point blank are really unique and awesome. I have nrx and they are nice. I like mhx elite and point blank just as much.
THANK YOU! Can you shout it again for those that are a little hard of hearing (or hard headed)? 😂
I still use Zebco rod and reels. Everyone laughs, but they have been great to me!
I can’t argue with that. That’s a cool aspect about fishing is that you can use different equipment that works for you to catch the same fish!
I love fishing high end,”snob rods”. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and enjoyment. Ill stick with my NRXs and Conquests.
Pair my Vanfords with Zodias and Curado 151’s with Curados. Can’t decide if to elevate my gear to the NRX 🤔 or buy twice or three times as many rods for the same buck…
that is a predicament indeed!😂 i would say depends on how many rods you are looking to purchase. if you are in need of a number of rods to fill out the boat then definitely get the more rods for your money. if you are looking for a single high end combo then hands down i would recommend the NRX. that 852 is by far my favorite rod in the entire boat. i use it for so many applications year round.
The 872s I throw 3/4 oz jig heads with 5 inch hula grubs. Fish it like a casting rod that you can BOMB lures on. One of the greatest rods
Interesting application. Very cool. They are phenomenal fishing rods.
@campetro10 it's a weird rod, 6 months ago I had the same opinion. I use it now for deep water smallmouth. Heavy tube, finesse jigs, ball jig heads all 3/8-3/4 plus plastic. Super sensitive rod for it, winter time I have it in my hand constantly my fish mive 35-60 feet deep.
@@justinhawkins4848 for sure, its definitely a versatile rod. i use it mostly for flukes, small swimbaits, and shakey heads so some stuff similar to you. I am with you there it will be on the deck of my boat through April now. What lake are you fishing for smallmouth that deep on?
These rods cost 550€ (each) at my local fishingstore. So price level is different from country to country.
I have got both models standing in the rodrack and i think they are going to serve my fishing many, many years. So if you think of the lifespan compared to the price of each rod.....😮😮
They are not THAT pricey i say 😂😂 greetings from NW-Europe
Ok cool! Good for you, they are fantastic rods and yes if you keep them a lifetime it’s a great purchase that is well worth the money in my opinion. Hopefully you’ve caught and will catch a bunch more fish with them!
Never had a blank fail and the sensitivity is superb that said had a wire eye fail on one of the baitcasters and Loomis would not stand behind their warranty. Very disappointed since that was the justification for spending the big bucks. In comparison I do quite a bit of fly fishing and all fly rods have wire eyes, but in 40+ yrs never had one fail.
wow that is interesting they wouldn't stand behind their product as i have heard that their warranty is solid. that is a bummer. did you end up just having to replace the guide?
Hey man thanks for sharing your insight. What do you think about the NRX+ 803s JWR? It's a medium heavy
Best jig rod on the market! i have one and its perfect for a 3/8-1/2 oz jig i would say. super sensitive you can feel everything. strongly recommend.
@@campetro10 Thanks for the reply! Would you recommend any other rigs for this rod or is it strictly a jig rod in your eyes?
@@PhillyFanatic1 nah you can use it for other things as well! It’s best for jigs but still just a fishing rod. I throw spinnerbaits and actually a magdraft on it as well. Could throw chatterbaits too. I normally throw fluorocarbon though so the faster action “jig” rod is neutralized a bit by the stretch of the fluorocarbon.
man for that price point they could have put the hook keeper in the front ...
St croix legend or avid
How about the GCX 852s 7'1" med ex fast would that be also more like fast than ex fast to. Thoughts Thanks for your time
I actually have never used the 852 GCX but i have heard that those line of rods are solid as well. i would imagine since its rated the same and built by the same company it has similar performing characteristics in terms of its action. so i would guess it behaves like a fast rather than extra-fast.
Which one is more sensitive for bottom contact? 852 or 872? Greetings from Germany
What are you planning on throwing? I prefer the 852 for lighter baits such as a wacky rigged senko or shakey head 1/4oz and lighter. Anything above that weight I would recommend the 872. I personally throw the 852 more it’s a little shorter and lighter action which is more manageable around docks and making more accurate casts.
I love BnM and think they are highly underrated especially for the price point.
Hmm I've never heard of those rods before. I will check them out. Looks like they are mainly Crappie rods. Do they have a bass fishing line?
@@campetro10 nah I don't think they have any dedicated bass rods but they're still great for fishing a weightless senko I've caught some big largemouth and Hybrids on it.
@@Gstar5150 very cool! thanks for the info. it is always fun to catch fish on lighter tackle.
Hey Cameron I've heard from a lot of people that those rod's are not very well balanced. Tell me your thoughts. Ps Cameron there is 50 lb stripped bass in lake Lanier they eat those big gizzard shad And I didn't believe it until I saw the videos on guys catching them.
It entirely depends on the model that you get. For the 852 spinning rod it is perfectly balanced the 872 is definitely tip heavy. Wow those are huge fish! There are some monster fish in lanier. It’s a fun lake
Do you have any ideas what rod could compare to the 872 at half the price?
like a G.Loomis alternative or any brand?
St croix victory 7'3 medium spinning is a $250 option.
Build it yourself. A rod comperable to a NRX plus costs about 150-200 to build.
@@renegade2325 Shimano expride what model
Shimano poison adrena about $400 new.
I fish an 842SJR and I would love to know the difference between it and the 852
There are a few minor differences between the IMX Pro 842 SJR and the NRX+ 852 SJR that i know of even though they have the exact same lure rating, action, and power:
1. The 842 is 1" shorter than the 852
2. IMX Pro series does not have recoil guides like the NRX+ series
3. the IMX rod blanks are different compared to the technology used in the NRX+ blanks for example the Spiral X wrappings
Ultimately, I have a a friend who has the 842SJR and it is an amazing rod and he loves it. The 842 is marginally different than the NRX+ 852. I would say for the money the 842 sounds like a better value to me for most applications.
@@campetro10 I would add the 842 SJR has a fast action the 852 SJR has an extra fast action. A fast action has more bend to the blank.
842 is 7', fast and the reel seat is positioned a little more forward than the 852, so its more like 6'10 with a lot of butt end. I like the glx version better. First 2 guides are smaller, upper guides are regular not recoil, and the reel seat is not as forward as the nrx version.
@@garylake998 I think you nailed it. My 842 SJR has the same pictogram of a bass as the MBR casting rods. While the 852s is positioned as a jig and worm spinning rod. Sounds like it is a bottom contact rod for while the 842s is more a moving bait rod. I use mine for small swim baits, spy baits etc.
How light of a lure can the 852s throw? 1/15? Or is it overpowered for that?
Hmm good question I wouldn’t throw anything less than 1/8 on it personally and even that would be light I think. I normally use it for 3/16 to 1/4 is the sweet spot imo. I would say it would be overpowered for 1/15 for sure. This is a medium rod you probably want a light action for that application
Thanks! I’m leaning toward the NRX+ 821s NRR to fill a gap in my quiver!
@@structurebe1 i love it. let me know how that rod is! i have not tried that particular model.
You going to use a NXR+ and not use a Stella?
I have honestly never used one. Would you recommend? I've heard they are ridiculously nice spinning reels.
@@campetro10 Yes it is worth it! Have 3 Stella set ups!
@@campetro10I use a Stella on a GLX and love it. I also have vanfords and the Stella makes the Vanford feel like a $10 reel.
@@HippieMagic Really?! well i guess ill have to try one then.
@@campetro10 unfortunately yes lol. Going back and forth and the Vanford feels gritty. You won’t notice it until you use a Vanquish or Stella then go back to it.
You probably make some good points but... until you've fished a MB Destroyer series rod, reserve judgement on expensive rods. My P5 rods (Windbuster and Madbull) feel categorically different from any other rod I've fished. Hard to describe but they feel alive in your hand. I own the fabled Expride 6'10 medium Expride and although a great rod, I purchased it after fishing jerkbaits on my Windbuster and was underwhelmed. That's what P5s will do to you.
great input! i will definitely have to try one of the Megabass rods out. i had the orochi xx series for a jig rod but that is the only one ive used over an extended period of time.
Ill stick to building my own with significantly better blanks for a fraction of the cost. Old HM blank tech with a shimano xrap is nowhere near worth that price.
How can you say they have the best guides on the market you saying recoil guides are better the torztie guide because GLoomis don’t have them on this rod $650 you can buy a dobyns Xtasy rod for $450 maybe cheaper that rod is just as good as the nrx it might be the same rod in quality graphite but the Xtasy rod has torztie guides GLoomis doesn’t it unless you go to conquest, but you’re talking $800 never I buy a $800 but $450 yes
Not the most expensive by far. Also not the baddest rods. The rods aren’t bad at all. They just ain’t the baddest as you claimed.
Shit rods, purchased a 902, on arrival discovered that it had a rattle inside the blank, complained to the shop I purchased it from and was told that it was a common issue with all G Loomis rods, I’m based in Australia so not sure if it’s a case of fuck Australia, send em our shit, poor fuckin form, as when I went back to the shop I did in fact find that the other 902 also had a rattle inside the blank.
That’s a bummer you had issues. I haven’t had any yet.
I am one of the designers at G.Loomis and I have not seen any NRX+ rods with a rattle. We most definitely don't send low quality rods anywhere in the world so that is not a true statement. Occasionally the guides will rattle, but we screen for that issue prior to shipment. If you are concerned, please reach out directly to G.Loomis customer service/warranty.
