First looks don't always go as planned, as attested to by my first look at the Brownells BRN-180 Upper Receiver in 7.62x39 and the Ridgeline DrOP...
Anytime you put that cartridge into an AR-15 (AR-18) pattern rifle, it can be tricky. The first issue I ran into was not enough spring tension on the hammer. After switching to a lower receiver with a Geissele Trigger, that seemed to solve that. But then I ran into an occasional feeding issue. Which could be magazine related (another issue with that round in that type of rifle).
The Ridgeline DrOP (Drop Offset, Pouch) is an interesting piece of gear. Basically a way mounting a magazine, radio or other piece of gear in a manner that kicks it out away from your body. Making the magazine easier to retrieve.
Brownells was super and quick and responsive when I brought up the issue and I'll be bringing you more soon. When I get the upper worked out and more time with the products, I'll bring you a full review.

The only things that eat Russian hard primer ammo (tulla, bear, red army...) are AKs and Gallils. I've already been through this... had to get rid of my 7.62x39 ARs (neither upgraded springs like Wolf spring, nor enhanced pins would fix dealing with hard primer ammo enough for the rifle to be trusted with your life...), only thing I'm running now with that ammo are Gallils.
Very curious what they had to say. I've gone through many combos and the BRA's enhanced firing pin + BRA enhanced power hammer spring + a Geissele G2S has given the most consistent success for x39.
@@dr.jamesdenton3051 Your wrong sir, I own 3 Pws piston x39 guns running Cproducts mags and are 💯. My mk111 has 5000+ rounds all steel case including brown bear subsonic is 💯 Must bought one of these uppers and installed on Pws lower with geissele ssa trigger and 300 rounds down the pipe no issues yet. 7.62x39 is a unique round in AR-15 platform I agree but the options available now like Cproducts mags, black rifle arms enhanced firing pins and wolf springs for builders no reason not to run 💯. And yes I own galil’s and ak’s too even a psa ks47 that didn’t run out of box lol fixed that one too and it is 💯 also. Hopefully start posting videos for all my x39 builds and factory guns.
@@dr.jamesdenton3051 I have a DTT upper, Aero lower, KAK bolt and mil trigger on my AR build and it runs better than most 223/556 guns. I'd put it against any AR any day.
@@dr.jamesdenton3051 enhanced pins with Hiperfire EDTs in both my ar47s have had zero issues lighting off golden tiger which AFAIK is one of the worst offender, no?
Thanks for the review. Literally put this in my shopping cart and then watched this video. 100% going to hold off for a while.
It’s fine just run lower with right trigger pack!
@KLAYCO47 do you recommend a ar47 upper?
You have to run a $300 super trigger for that upper to work. GG's Brownells....wow
@@jon_siimms3257 Well I just bought an upper so we will see what happens. I'm putting it on a lower that does run with other 762 uppers so fingers crossed the trigger hammer is heavy enough
@@KLAYCO47 do you know if the bolt uses standard firing pins?
If it does, changing it out to a BRA firing pin will work wonders for you👍
Sucks when that happens; been there!
It happens from time to time, and 7.62x39 is tricky in that platform...
Do you still recommend the PWS 7.62x39 uppers? I have one on the way since you reviewed them well awhile ago and my Mk111 mod2 in 556 has been flawless
Thank you for being forthcoming and open in your review process. It's greatly appreciated.
Seemingly clean & honest review. TY.
It always makes me happy when i see another highspeed leftie
It's painful to see things not work for you but it's also a great learning experience, and shows how well the customer service for the products you show actually work.
Pinty is fire 😂
Hell yeah. Almost bought this upper, but I ended up buying my first suppressor instead 🙃
I'll get it eventually (blows next paycheck)
You made the right choice!!! Suppress everything!! Lol👍
More cans is always better than more uppers
The only thing softer than that firing pin is your homemade ice cream.
I did the extended firing pin, wolf trigger spring, and C-products 7.62x39 mags, and an aimplus 7.62x39 BCG, and I haven't had an issue in years. Before I did those upgrades (to my bear creek upper, anderson lower), the gun was basically bolt action.
I did have a BRN180S in 5.56 when they first came out. I liked it, but the upper was heavier than expected. Cool gun though.
The firing pin and c product mags is all you need, I used a Rave 140 trigger in mine for awhile with no primer strike issues
I built an AR in 7.62x39 and I feel like the part that makes it all run is the KAK bolt. I call it my sewing machine because it runs so consistent.
I didn't know KAK made a 762x39 BCG? I'm using PSA in mine, runs fine no issues. but would like to get a few spares.
@@adriansahai4935 I would buy the KAK bolt 100x over, its very good. I run a boron coated mil-spec trigger and have had ZERO issues. I just had to polish and widen the crap out of my feed ramps and I was good to go.
@@adriansahai4935 FYI, They shave the bolt and use a standard firing pin, IMO this is what fixes all the common light strike issues.
@@adriansahai4935 PSA is a good bolt. The biggest thing to watch out for is lugs shearing off which the PSA does not have a reputation for unlike many other bolts. AIM and Brownells are also good ones. I haven't tried KAK but it might be the same.
or BRA bolt
You do that every time
I find with a lot of 762 x 39 barrels, I have to open up the gas port to get them to run reliably. A lot of manufactures design weapons for brass cased ammo without factoring in that the steel case ammo has lower pressures
I never thought about that. I have a x39 barrel from midway, I get about 1 light primer stick ever 10 rounds.
@@jvh22a Light primer strikes are very likely either a hammer spring or firing pin issue. If you've got a pair of calipers you can measure firing pin protrusion and see if it's within spec. If you've got a normal functioning AR for reference, firing pin protrusion for 7.62 x 39 should be 0.0075in to 0.015in longer than your normal 5.56 firing pin protrusion. Make sure the firing pin is properly shaped, should be nice and round.
But most likely you need a stronger hammer spring.
@@JohnMaxGriffin Ture. Especially for shooting the cheap Russian ammo
a hiperfire trigger with the heavy assist springs help a lot with the hard primers in russian ammo. That, an extra powerful trigger spring and an extended firing pin increased functionality when using Wolf ammo in my old 5.45x39 upper. it could fire 7n6 reliably but the Wolf only fired about 90% of the time which made me retire the idea of shooting russian ammo types in ar's. i hope y'all have better reliability with yours.
Pretty fancy bolt action 7.62x39!!😀
Ivan with the rapid disassembly methods again. At least it was grassier this time.
Try cleaning and oiling it is straight out of the box
I have dealt with AR style 7.62 X39 rifles and I always have to dermal a half moon cut in the front of the mag so the steel cases does not snag on it.
My BRN-180 7.62x39 upper came in 3 days ago around the time this video was uploaded. I was worried after seeing this so I took mine to the range today for a quick reliability check and I think mine is good. 20rds Wolf 123gr FMJ (5 on setting 1 w/no can. 15 on setting 2 w/Sandman K) and then 30rds of old Russian white box JHP (all 2 w/a can). Just 50rds today but I didn’t suffer any of the issues that were in the video. Using Duramag 20s and 30s and a CMC single stage trigger.
First, you are awesome and about as down to earth as an individual can get. Thank you for your reviews. In my 16” Windham 7.62x39 AR , I performed a couple functions that has netted me 760 rounds of zero failures thus far. I swapped all my stock trigger springs to Wolfe extra power springs. My firing pin was already enhanced for 7.62x39 from the Windham Weaponry factory. I tried using various buffer weights from carbine (stock) to H3 but MY rifle only liked the the carbine buffer weight. I also swapped in a couple different buffer springs from Sprinco but again MY rifle only liked the stock spring stiffness that came stock with my lower. That does include the “standard” sprinco buffer spring as well, that was a no-go. My rifle came stock with a 30rnd Duramag magazine and I have since aquired a few additional Duramag magazines in various capacities which have all functioned flawlessly. I can’t speak for any other magazine manufacturers. One last thing is my rifle simply likes to run fairly wet but will run fine even when dry. God bless!
I just bought a 556 10.5 BRN180 and I launched the recoil spring and guide rods first thing too, mine didnt have any malfunctions within about 200 rounds, my muzzle device did loosen though.
I just got a PSA jakyl.....nice long stroke piston rifle on an AR lower. Happy days.
An exercise in frustration. A very honest review though. I've said it before, and I'll say it again.....Cowabunga!
I know it is a less popular option but I hope some manufacturers start making Bren2 7.62x39 magwell lowers for ARs. The current AR mags for 7.62x39 seem to all have some limitations and just overall a bad rep
I've never had a single feed issue with my 7.62x39 rig 🤷🏾♂️
Use Cproducts defense mags !
@@ngaoutdoors4157 thats what I have heard too, that they put some significant R&D into their geometry. I'd still have a bit more confidence in the brens just based on the steady curve
Love my Bren 2 in 7.62x39 and the mags, when I can find them.
Thanks for the honest review. Looking like I'm not going to be purchasing this at this time
What I want is a new AR57 type system that uses P90 style mags. That’s all I want.
Truth be told that optic is actually made out of the strongest 6065 chineseium and probably survived some guy beating the shit out of it with a water bottle, so you know it’s good. (Looking at you 704tactical)
I had the same issues on both my 7.62 uppers and my Ben-180. Solved with an enhanced trigger spring and enhanced firing pin
That reset is AUDIBLE.
Had a 5.45 AR upper and had lite primer strikes. Got a Wolf heavy hammer spring and it worked fine.
That pouch looks like one of those old Serb surplus single cell pouches .
And that's why I've avoided 7.62x39 so far. My Wylde and 300BO BRN-180's have been great but this caliber on this platform seems to be an exercise in pass/fail testing.
What a slog over 48 hrs. Still a information point for potential buyers to see.
The sun was very bright today.
P.S. I think you’re supposed to make bang bang noises with this one.
Thanks again
TRANSITION!
Damn near a bolt action Ivan 🤣
My 5.56 version of this was 100% reliable suppressed and unsuppressed. Was a sweat shooter, but had to get rid of it because being a lefty these uppers huck brass right into your arms, hands and face.
I wish they made this to work with Lowers that accept AK magazines.
If they made something like this compatible with AR lowers that take AK mags such as the KS47 or BRS47, this would be fkn MINT.
I'm tempted to see if one of these 7.62x39 uppers work on something like a KS47 lower, to enable the use of AK mags.
They will with some work. I've been trying to show where it can be found but YT keeps autodeleting comments. Google those two model numbers and it'll come up.
No, it won’t work. Not without modification, which isn’t worth it, IMO. The KS47 upper has teeth in it to properly seat AK mags, like an AK a has inside of it. That and the dimensions of the AK mag and the AR upper are just too different. Kind of like trying to insert an AR mag into an AK and hoping it functions.
Have the same problem with mine. Seems like the recoil springs are too light and let the bolt bounce out of battery leading to light strikes. Going to try replacing the springs with some heavier sig MCX springs if they will fit the guide rods. I feel like pws uses the same strength springs across the line of different caliber uppers.
I'm commenting so I can follow up on your process. I've had a BRN for a couple years now and I wanted to know if other springs could work. Let me know how it works out for you
I like the BRN 180 because of it's original Stoner design, but to tel you the truth. I would rather have a SIG MCX Virtus, but I am sure they probably cost around the same. to be honest is would be which ever is cheapest and most reliable.
*Launches recoil assembly* -> Baron Von Savant has entered the chat👀
Not how I thought this would go...
Picked one up but haven't shot it yet. I always automatically put an enhanced firing pin in x39 ARs. Will update this after I run it.
Question is will the mag holder work with 40lbs extra belly and a plate carrier? 🤔
almost bought one, would have been my first 7.62x39, think I will probably go with an AK type of riffle instead
Much more sensible idea
If you're gonna get a BRN-180 I think they make by far the most sense in 300 blk or 5.56. They're great uppers and I expect the issues Ivan ran into are not going to be the norm with the 7.62x39 variant. 7.62 in ARs is just kind of goofy to begin with.
To have pws name on that. That suck. I have to use a mil spec trigger not to get light prime strike with my 7.62x39 pws upper.
I'm thinking they used a standard AR-15 firing pin which is too short to reliably set off berdan primers on steel case.
Those primers looked set deep in the pocket at 8:00. Had that happen with a out of spec case of Russian steel 308 once. Did the same thing with my tavor 7 but brass ran fine.
It is what it is...Music request, Excessive Force (2015) and or Bloodclot (2017) 💀
I think 7.62x39 just needs to be fed from ak mags. Mini 30 mags seem very functional as well but im not aware of anyone making a lower that takes them.
So get a KS47 receiver from PSA
@@bettycocker2226 so i have one and a mutant and 2 rifles that use mini 30 mags. 7.62 ar mags have always been a problem.
Does the bolt take standard firing pins?
If it does get a BRA firing pin, those are the key for 7.62x39 ars
Would you mind please taking photos of the inside of the receiver? I'd like to see if PWS made cuts to allow AK x39 mags. I tried posting a link to photos on theakforum that show what is needed but the comment got auto-deleted...
my 223 wylde brn won't even eject if I fire with the dust cover closed. Not enough gas. I can't get the handguard off with a surefire socom flash hider installed either. I'd rather have my money back, honestly.
I've had the same issue with light primer strike also. Turned out the hammer spring was installed backwards. But in your case it may be a firing pin issue.
Cool set up but Would love to see some Quickhatch videos 🙌🏼
Id like to see a 7"!!!! with possibly a left side charger? Seal the right side up more seems pretty wide open for junk to get in.. . but love the idea! Love their is no buffer! I'm waiting to see if a shorter version comes out... i have seen some people chop the barrel an hand gaurd down on the 10" its 🔥 🔥
Also maybe this upper with lower that takes AK mags! I have never had luck with 7.62x39 ar mags...
When he racked the weapon something flew out and up over his left shoulder. Wonder what that was?
The time stamp was 1:54 or 1:55 when he racked it and the object flew out
You need enhanced firing pin kit
Or extend firing pin
Also, maybe review without suppressor as it will give it more back pressure and assist possibly with the functionality. Reason being, a lot of folks don’t have suppressors who are interested in possibly purchasing this upper.
I’ve got the 10.5” 556 upper on an ADM ambi lower and it’s one of if not the flattest shooting AR I’ve ever owned. Thought about getting the 300blk but wished they made them in 7-8” instead of 10+” but something I can’t bring myself to do is get x39 in an AR platform. Seems like it never ends well lol. Long as the Galil Ace is around there’s no need for any other x39 guns 😂jk
How was the accuracy compared to flinging cheap .223?
What is the black rainbow?
Just wait till folks start trying to run surplus Yugo M67 through these lmao. The primers are purposely seated deeper in Yugo ammo
Would a psa47 lower work with this? Do regular Ak mags fit this upper
I hope this is a sample and not released to public dam its was ready to ordered but i will just keep shooting my 200 Bear Creek Aresenal 7.62x39 Upper never had a hiccup with it for what Brownells charges for those uppers it should work.
Oh
Man. A bear creek guy…
@@MrTylero28 I actually own a BRN-80 in 556 and never had a issue and also a PWS 7.62X39 Piston AR never had a problem out of it either and yes i won a BCA Upper as well.
BRN 180 bolt action
What flies off the rifle at 1:54?
If you want to practice malfunction drills, this is the gun for you 😂
Id love to pick one of these up to put on a KS-47 lower
It will not work
Well...rough start.
So I have the 10.5 BRN-180 in 5.56 and I ran into this issue only when using an auto lower. It seems as if the BRN with its different BCG type may cause the malfunctions you and I experienced. Once I put it back on my semi lower it worked flawlessly again. I'm not entirely sure why that is though.
On my semi lower I have random bolt locks with certain pmags but not with all of them. Is that ur issue as well?
@@TheClutchman32 no I don't use pmags, I like my metal mags better haha but it seemed that the bcg wouldn't reset the trigger properly and cause a lighter strike. Would be my best educated guess, not fully sure if that's the case, but switching back to my normal standard semi lower it worked flawlessly. So I'm fairly certain it doesn't like auto too much.
"Maybe if you're not the most fit person in the world"
I store my spare mags in my fat folds. I just added capacity for two more 33 rd Glock mags.
LoL
Too bad it doesn’t seem ready for prime time. I’d really like the 16” upper to be in stock and ready when it is.
Would love to see how it cycles with AK mags out of a KS 47 lower
ua-cam.com/users/shortsW3oLZLyxybQ looks like this guy just did this
Ha! Ha! Ha! Early ejection...Been there. Done that.
Can someone please put this on a ks47 lower.
Hello friends, I have the BRN chambered in 300BLK, I have issues running the Bernaul steel, it jams up every 4-6 rounds. Anybody have any solutions or experiencing the same thing? Granted when I tried the steel cased ammo it was bone dry and never cleaned, I’ve had zero malfunctions when running brass supers, subs, suppressed or unsupressed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'm going to pretend both those lowers are a finger to the feds
Military Russian primers are hard at to hard for the capitalist firin pin lol
oh hell that many fail to fire??
Did it come with the good old rusty charging handle like all of them do? Lol
LOL, surprised the youtube algorithm didn't dick with your video.
Was the bolt of the BRN fully sitting on the back of the round? My BRN180 has some issues where it isn't going fully into battery and is constantly getting light strike issues like you were getting. PWS is coming out with a fix for it shortly.
Where can I find more info on this?
@@fredzeppelin21 i dont think there is much info on the fix or the issue itself. I only knew about it because I sent my gen 2 brn to pws and they are the ones that told me. The issue is just kind of happens to the rare minority of brn owners.
@@evoasus2286 thanks! Im having issues running steel on my 300BLK. I’m not getting lights strikes as describe but my bolt isn’t fully going into battery. I name about every 4 - 6 rounds running steel unfortunately not sure what I should do other than greasing it and running it soaking wet.
@@fredzeppelin21 one thing pws told me to do was replace the oprod spring. It didnt help me in the wnd but it fould fix your issue temporarily.
@@evoasus2286 i thought of this, does PWS make different springs or is there another manufacturer making springs for these bad boys? I know it’s just a spring but I just wouldn’t want to get the wrong one.
Super cool tho
And I thought the optic would be the part that sucked...
You got crap ammo, I got a box of tula out of a case, one box, not the rest, that had dead primers. Looks like good strikes, I could be wrong but I have bought my fair share of crap, the worst is Sterling, primers fell out like that was the goal, 400$ wasted, sort of good brass, good powder, undersized primers, broke down and rebuilt, works fine.
This thing will easily make Biden's approved weapons list.
would have cycled fine without the chinese optic
If one were to pair this with a KS47 receiver....
Nice! a bolt action BRN-180.........I'll pass. That was painfully cringe to watch.
Hard to say, quality control is lacking on all things these days, I've even had some bad American made .223
Will it work with a CMMG Mutant lower...
No the CMMG mutant lower is too big. A PSA KS47 lower will fit but the upper isn't designed to work with AK mags. Waiting on the PSA Jakl in 7.62x39 as it's supposed to work with the KS47 lower and AK mags.
@@juanthelawnmowerthief1641 Excellent, Thank you ! Seems to be the route to go.
What a POS !!
I wouldn’t trust my life with that thing.
What could it be, good strikes, cheap ammo, yeah. My new rifle will not chamber Sargent Major Tula, have to mortor it out, all other rifles love it, 1 inch groups at 150 with xtac 62 , no other ammo doesn't work,30 verities tried. That gun, no Sargent Major.
Try brass ammo
You yeeted the internals into the dirt dude… then you used a trash optic. Way to discredit your channel.
