Maybe. I'm so used to Pyxel Edit for tiles. This still looked a bit more cumbersome than Pyxel Edit, but since I own both Pyxel Edit and Aseprite, I'll play around with it and see if Aseprite wins me over for tiles.
@@robertb67 You have a very good point! I have been using PyxelEdit my whole career, and I fear that switching will affect my production... But sadly we have not heard anything from the developer for 2 years now, and I am weary that it will stay that way...
@@aftershower942 Yeah, that's the problem with Pyxel Edit. The updates are very, very rare. Aseprite definitely is much better on that front. Pyxel Edit desperately needs some more basic features added, such as a basic hue and saturation editor and things like that. Aseprite has a ton more features. If Aseprite nails the tile system, it will be the go to pixel art software.
Man, this looks ... I don't even have words. This is beyond anything I was even hoping for in Aseprite (which is already my pixel art program of choice.) Thank you for the amazing sneak peek video!
Whoawhoa whoa whoaa, this is really a game changer! In my project, this method may cut the tileset-making time up to 67%! No nerve-wrecking drag-and-drop to match tiles anymore! Thanks for the info and demo!
Oh that's so smart with the time lapse video taken from a separate window. I know this wasn't your point, and maybe people already do this but I tried doing a time lapse of some 3D work and it was a bit nauseating with the zooming and rotating. Recording a separate output window would make it seem like the changes were magically appearing, same as what you figured out in aseprite. Brilliant.
You're not exaggerating--it's a game-changer for sure. I'm eager to get my hands on the new version and up the tilesets for my own game. I haven't touched them in months because it was such a tedious workflow before, but this is so much better. Thanks for showing it off, and for the screen capture tip!
im really glad aseprite received this feature, but actually (which a lot people don't know about) cosmigo promotion had this feature for years already :P
I feel like the idea behind this feature should be standard for most pixel art editors and should have come out a long time ago. Thank you for making videos!
There is a saying about how taking the time to sharpen your axe will save you time on chopping the tree. Great job at finding a way to save time on making tilesets!!
I've been using this feature with Pro Motion NG for some time now, ability to instantiate tiles is powerful. Now we just gotta wait for feature like components in design tools
I've been using Krita in a similar way recently, you can create clone layers of your tiles add a transform mask and move them so they are layed out in a way that you like. Then when you paint on the original all of your clones get updated. The tile brush in Aseprite is quicker obviously but Krita has its own advantages as well.
There should be an export option for tile layers. Like get a json export of all tile indexes within the scene, so we can easily import it into our projects like games
I am also reaaally looking forward to this for years, and it being right around the corner now, I can’t wait until it’s publicly released! Thanks for the sneak peek video, very cool!
This is bloody incredible! I was just thinking the other day that I would have to start using Pixel Edit for tilemaps. This is awesome! And recording the preview! I had no idea that's what others were doing! Thanks for that tip!
I was excited just knowing that it was going to have tile support, but now I'm extremely anxious to get it! The way that it handles copy and pasting for the tilemap layer is not only so smart, but it's going to make some things faster, easier, and more organic. The only thing I'm now unsure about is if there's a way to duplicate a tile and change only one for things like testing iterations.
Good to hear this. So far I like the software and the only bug I've ran into is with the use of "ALT" that does not seem to work when I try to quick pick a colour but after I changed to "CTRL" there was no problem. I'm linux user
Getting into Pixel Art and I'm loving it. A lot of people suggested Asperite to me so this video will literally either convince me to buy it or pass it up. (Will update when I finish it)
Crazy to think it's been two years and this still hasn't been *officially* released. I had to work with animated tiles today and it was a nightmare process involving exporting from Aseprite into Tiled, linking the animated tiles together using a random Polish dude's unofficial plugin, making the map in Tiled, and then exporting it back into Aseprite using another awesome plugin from some random German dude. Would love support for animated tiles because that workflow just isn't scalable.
It amazes me how long this took to implement for aseprite, Pyxel Edit has had this function for years and it is a one man project that barely gets updates anymore xD
Version 1.3 is available, though still in beta (has been for over almost two years). The easiest way to access it is, if you have the steam version, to go to the steam properties for the app and select the "Betas". The app will auto-update to the latest beta releases automatically after that.
Trying this feature out now, and it has a long way to go before they catch up to Pyxel edit, which I've been using for tile work for years now. Hoping to see some UI improvements.
