Now I use my thumb to do most of the controls having my left hand next to it and it works really well. Mind you I'm using photoshop and doing mostly digital painting. I'm still learning pixel art using your channel and was looking into picking up Aseprite. Just in case the above helps /shrug Keep up the awesome work!
I'm weird. I read the title as "How to crash Aseprite in 30 minutes". But regardless, this is the tutorial I need! I've been using aseprite for a while but seeing how efficiently you use it blows my mind! Great tutorial!
Watching this video was informative and stressful; I picked up Aseprite today to see if it'd be better/faster than my old art software. The only issue is I'm left-handed, and none of these shortcuts are in convenient locations for how I draw. I usually use those shortcut buttons he discussed, but my tablet program doesn't notice that Aseprite exists. I recognize that I could change every shortcut to accommodate my situation, but A) that would take a lot of time and troubleshooting, and B) there are fewer keys on the right-hand side (the hand I'd be using for shortcuts) of the keyboard than on the left. Excellent video, though; I'm glad I found it, regardless of my issues.
Awesome ! Thank you ! I watched the tileset and paralax video in which you use the shading tool and I was like "I want that power !!!" I'm glad you covered it here + a couple of cool tips. Thank you.
you can also move frames between layers by holding it with right click button, moving it where you want it and than release the click and a small window will appear and you click move :) thats how i do it, its one more click but its easyer for me than going close to the monitor to find the yello border of the frame
I'd definately love to see a more indepth tutorial how you created that rotating background. I can't even begin to imagine how'd i'd do it even with your workflow. Supercool!
Nice crash course! I always wondered how you managed to switch the brush size so quickly! Really hope that gets added to Aseprite as an official feature. Another option is to just hover the size box and use the scroll wheel on your mouse, but it'd still be nice to hold down a key and move your mouse.
really helpful, ive been using aseprite every day for 2 years now, lots of hours but i still found somethings useful here, i will try to avoid the pixelperfect feature from now on. This is the best program ive ever used and i keep finding new things, for me it is almost perfect, i have just some really minor things but they told me they will improve them in the near future, like exporting animations in some video format, improving the text tool and adding the resize thing like you have (although when they introduced the pen pressure i didnt find myself resizing too much since i have a lot of sizes with just pen pressure but it would be nice to have)
The export sprite sheet is so insanely powerful. My game that have system of real time sprite swapping conditionally with 10+ animated frame is only possible because of this tool. The other software would take like 100x times to export all the different variation of all the layers.
This is some masterclass level tutorial and its just... Free on UA-cam. Cheers mate. My friends and i are doing a game jam and im trying to learn pixel art as we go. This is goong to help a ton.
Wow man. Thank you so much for making this. I was surprised to see you using the keyboard over the tablet shortcuts. It makes total sense. I was hoping to see you show everything you did, including how you change brush size... I hope it becomes standard as well.
Maybe a little help to those who'd like that Java Script as well - if you're using a pen, you can bind keys to the 2 buttons, and the "+" and "-" increase/decrease the brush size as well, so simply bind + and - to the 2 buttons and you can modify your brush without any keyboard input. Im using my pen like this for years now and it works like a charm. Also, you can add combinations like "shift +" or "ctrl +" to modify more settings like opacity etc, this way you have to use only your pen buttons and one keyboard button that's lying in a convenient position for you. Hope i could help you a little :D
If you're left handed like me, I defiantly think you should spent a solid chunk of time setting new keyboard shortcuts for a lot of things! You can literally hurt your wrist due to the contortions required to use keyboard shortcuts optimized for right handres.

I am a fan of pixel art. (probably pixel/retro games are the ones who made of my childhood). Arguably, Good graphics is acceptable and can enhance the story telling of some games. But pixel is more enjoyable for me. it brings back the memories of your childhood and the fun whilst playing with people you've had with. Pixel art is like a paradise of dreams. its like escaping the reality. Also add the efforts of people back then creating such immersive art without game engines compared now. Its great that many people still love pixel arts 💕
Been waiting for this for a while soo helpful 💖, don't think you mentioned it but I prefer to use ctrl to switch between layers, it shows a nice box around whatever pixels are in the layer which is
i could not imagine how useful a dedicated tool for pixel art could be, i always thought gimp (which i prefer to photoshop especially for the selection tools when working with single pixels) can do everything thats needed.
Oh my gosh, it has built in support for pixel aspect ratio! That is perfect! I could never figure out a way to do that with Krita. Incidentally I don't know of any game engines that support it in displaying graphics. I am currently working on programming a game engine as a hobby, and one of the features I have built into it is control over pixel aspect ratio. If I can get the hang of Aseprite this will be so convenient when I am actually creating a game using my engine.
Update: After compiling and using Aseprite, I am still really satisfied with this feature. But the feature is unfortunately not very customizable in a user-friendly way. It only supports 3 ratios out of the box: 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1. The SNES graphics on the other hand display all pixels in a 7:6 ratio, which obviously doesn't fall into any of those 3 defaults. In order to support the 7:6 ratio or any other custom ratio, you have to actually go into the "data" folder in your Aseprite installation and modify the "new_sprite.xml" and "sprite_properties.xml" files and manually create new pixel aspect ratios in each. This isn't too difficult, and I managed to find a guide on it online. But this is still probably a bit hard for a non-technical user to do. It might be helpful if there was just a "Custom Ratio" option in the UI so that the user can add custom aspect ratios directly. Although, this might not be a very high priority to implement because most users would be satisfied with a 1:1 ratio.
I am really looking forward to learning more about this tool and using it for my game development. It looks like it has so many advantages over alternative software like Krita when it comes to pixel art.
Another tip (not sure if other people have mentioned already) but, if you set the background colour to fully-transparent, you can remove pixel without having to change the tool. You just right click instead.
if you want to go deeper, go on aseprite github repository, click on the ‘issue’ tab and see if there is any open issue about a bug that makes aseprite crash, proceed to replicate the bug and done!
Thank you for this video Adam very informative and easy to put into practice. I found your channel yesterday and looking forward to watching more videos and getting stuck into pixel art.
In regards to moving around the canvas.. I find the fastest way is to simply aim your cursor where you want to zoom and then use mouse scroll. Aesprite will zoom in on that location automatically.
If you're watching this in or after 2024, the change brush size hotkey got added: hold ctrl+alt and drag your brush
omg thank god I literally just started using it and I was so bummed there wasn't a hotkey. I kept going to the brackets out of habit.

Just a tip - you can turn your tablet 90° in your driver settings if that's a more natural position for your hand to reach function buttons.
Been waiting for this for a while soo helpful 💖, don't think you mentioned it but I prefer to use ctrl to switch between layers, it shows a nice box around whatever pixels are in the layer which is
The best tool for pixel art by the best artist of pixel art 😊
Bro this video will influence many future games. Thank you so much! Really useful!
I used to struggle a lot in exporting sprite sheet got an easy method
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. It served as a proper intro for me.
Excellent video my dude, thank you for introducing me to the basics of how to navigate this marvelous software efficiently. Thanks!
More backgrounds and characters creating tutorials please )
Bro's skills are so fire he legit just said "maybe I'm making a cool question mark" and then proceeded to do just that.
i could not imagine how useful a dedicated tool for pixel art could be, i always thought gimp (which i prefer to photoshop especially for the selection tools when working with single pixels) can do everything thats needed.
You have the best pixel art channel. You're the Brackeys of Aseprite.
Brackeys?
@@gargaduk Great UA-cam channel that taught Unity game design. I believe it has been discontinued, but it has a wealth of knowledge.
Another tip (not sure if other people have mentioned already) but, if you set the background colour to fully-transparent, you can remove pixel without having to change the tool. You just right click instead.
There's a setting to remap rmb to eraser
@@ilovehumongoushonkers Yeah that's a possibility too but the right click button does function as a secondary colour brush which works better for me.
Thank you for Asebrush, it saves me a lot of time since my wacom isn't working anymore !
I don't use asprite and I don't intend to. I'm here for the workflow.
Asesprite crash course:
Make canvas way too big
Press every button
Hopefully asesprite crashes
Nice pun XD
If you need literal crash course then use aseprite while driving in high speed
if you want to go deeper, go on aseprite github repository, click on the ‘issue’ tab and see if there is any open issue about a bug that makes aseprite crash, proceed to replicate the bug and done!
@@salvatore2119 that's so literal it gave me whiplash

Thanks for captioning for Korean.
Its really helpful!
Love the shading mode and the outline tool!! thank you for your tutorial ❤❤
Thank you for this video Adam very informative and easy to put into practice. I found your channel yesterday and looking forward to watching more videos and getting stuck into pixel art.
Awesome videos all round, mate. Thanks so much :)
For increasing the brush size while you're brushing, press ctrl+scrollwheel
Thank you so much for this! It really helps man, I appreciate your work and I hope you have a beautiful day!
Great demo and a good thing to know a lot of Photoshop shortcuts also work in Aseprite.
18:18 You can do the brush size automation now while holding ctrl + alt/option in the latest version
This is a great resource for new people, thanks!
In regards to moving around the canvas.. I find the fastest way is to simply aim your cursor where you want to zoom and then use mouse scroll. Aesprite will zoom in on that location automatically.
