My 98 996.1 makes the exact same noise, similar loudness level, from bank 5, 6 sude. However, some days it does not make any noise at all 25% chance, somedays it does 75% chance. Winters more regular, summers not so frequent. Noise level never change in the last 3 yrs since it had started. Since the last oil change 12k km, oil guage has not dropped one level and i never refill. No uneven sign of soot on exhaust tips, no excessive smoke, no smoke or very little at start, no uneven smoke between both sides. I was living with that very ok and no plan to do anything about it either.
Exactly what my 996 3.4 did, only when engine hot, and left idling. Rev and it would go away. No loss of power etc. but it would pop and cough when starting. :/
Hello, how much oil does it burn? What did you ended up doing with it? Are you gonna live with it? I wonder how much worse can it get if treating it properly.
Dirty radiators can cause/trigger this issue - you may be doing everything else right. After my engine rebuild my 997 is better than when it left the factory, embrace.
Sounds more like a lazy lifter as the noise is not constant, it goes away at higher rpm and comes back at idle, also it’s a single tap, a bore scoring sound is a double tap as the piston crown tips over at TDC and BDC. Try holding 3000 rpm for about 2 minutes and your issue may hopefully be solved.
That's why buyers get caught out, thinking it's a sticky lifter, only to find out it's a £10k fix. A borescope inspection is quick and relatively cheap, always get one done!
Statistically, there’s no such thing as a sticky lifter for a Porsche. It’s straight up bore scoring. If anyone ever thinks lifter on 996/997 , read it as bore scoring.
On my buddy 's 991 the noise was always there since the start-up and progressively fading away as the engine temperature was getting warmer once the car was in motion. As I could read in some other comments on the web,it really is surprising how at Porsche they seemingly got along with such a flaw for over a decade , being the issue affecting both 997 and 991.1 - That's a decade of time and evidently they didn't feel it necessary fixing such an unpleasant weak point in their engines.
Had a similar noise on my E36 - topped off the oil and added a liqui-moly oil additive specifically for lifter tick issues, got the car up to temp, and cruised on the highway at 4k rpm and the tick has gone away entirely. Most of it was likely oil starvation, but the additive buys some nice peace of mind too. I just picked up my 996 yesterday and thankfully don't have this noise there so YMMV, but my E36 fix only cost 15min and $30 so I'd say it's worth a shot.
I had exactly the same on a 60K 2005 997 C2S - mine wasnt as noticable as that, I would get rid of the car to be honest- no one should buy a 997.1 ever !!!!
or a 996 the engines are completely shit...the engine rebuilders are full of them thats how they survive AND!!! rebuilding with nikosil coatings does not solve the problem...in time it will wear through that too...its a design fault that porsche couldn't give a shit about
@@truthseeker197agree. Porsche 911 was my dream car. Got one 14 years ago when I hit 30, and the dealer screwed me. Test drove it and all was good. I spent a fortune on the car, and couldn’t really afford to keep it so PX it for. CLK55. I stayed in Porsche circles for years, and the amount of people posting engines failing was ridiculous. Any updates
My 987 facelift from mid 2009 makes the same noise too.... and it has not a engine were bore scoring is common

Thanks that was short and to the point. Good luck.
i used to have the same sound, but I change my exhaust gasket on the manifold to the head and it fixed that.

Were you losing engine oil on the bore scoring?

Banks 4,5,6 = Wallet destruction and steel liners fitted.
I know this feeling 👀
Was the tapping noise their when engine is cold ?
confirmed it was bore scoring. cylinder 5 and 6.
Has the car been run in cold conditions?

According to Jake Raby, it is never a lifter.
did you get to the bottom of this?..mine does exactly the same only when hot

Did this noise come and go? Or always present

Did your buddy check for bore score?
Hi dude.. how did you solve this problem ?
get the engine rebuilt
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Sounds like classic piston slap that leads to bore scoring. Porsche needs to address this issue with their engines, but seems content to live with it.
Sounds exactly like a lazy lifter to me!!!

Had the same issue with my 997 was bore score. Shame because a prestige brand like this puts me off buying another.
@@martinfinlayson6308 D'you know how few have this issue ?

Hi, does the noise disappear when the car is warmed up? Mine has similar noise during start up but the noise disappears when the car is warm. Thanks
No it actually makes more noise when warm
