Porsche 911 potential bore scoring 997.1 noise M97
looks like cold start water vapour...its mainly steam This footage does not look like a bore scoring issue...You can not see oil smoke, maybe slight on firing but then clear, this is just from oil settling in the flat 6. At least let it run up to temperature and then check. You can only assume the engine is cold here if you don't indicate otherwise.... so you can't really tell anything or diagnose from this.
get a bore scope
Not posting a follow up of what you have done to fix this common failure on the Ultimate Drive Junk? BMW should have listened to ATG that those banjos are a joke & designed poorly. They refused to listen because rich owners are willing to pay for fixing. After as low as 18K, the Camshafts become defective. Why do you think the down fall of the gas guzzler M30 engine series? Used/resale of the E23/E24 are a joke? No fool is going to drop $9,000+ for camshaft replacement when the car is worth less than $2,000! One can buy a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla for under $22K, drives it over 125K without major problem. Then sale it for $11,000. Not on a BMW 6 & 7 series.
She tells a story like smokyo rose
Exactly what my 996 3.4 did, only when engine hot, and left idling. Rev and it would go away. No loss of power etc. but it would pop and cough when starting. :/

Snap. Mine does the same. I'm going to try and hunt it down
Were you losing engine oil on the bore scoring?
Have e23 is same thing😅
Did you fix it?
First bmw I’ve seen on UA-cam with a full tank
Oh no, that is going to be expensive. Did you fix it yet?
Don’t buy a motor from nein lives parts on eBay it will sound worse after 1700 miles
Sounds like a nein lives rebuild from eBay after 1700 miles . Buyer beware!
looks my 911
Full part out? I’ll put the motor in my Subaru 😂 I love all my flat engines❤️
The engine is the issue…
@@man-mq9rk bummer. I’m hoping my 04 3.6 makes it till I can put some nickis in it 💰 so far so good.
Don't overcomplicate matters. M96 is supposed to smoke when you light them up. It's the tell-tale sign you're in a Porsche. If you don't like the puff of smoke, just replace the AOS. It's a $100 part, a 1 hour job. Which will cost you the skin on your knuckles, though. "Bore score" 🙄
did you find the problem and what was wrong
Doesn't seem like bore scoring...
blue smoke from the left means it has bore scoring because the left exhaust is connected to the right bank (bank 2) and its mostly on that side.
Because of the flat engine configuration, you typically get a little blue smoke on startup, as oil has a tendency to settle.
you sure its scored, seems like every Porsche I've owned
This car is worth every penny, issues and all. I want one
I did not see nor hear anything alarming!
No big deal, totally normal
any interest in selling the 997?
As a long term BMW specialist I found the perfect 100% way of preventing valve gear clatter by milling a 1.5mm annular grove around the two camshaft oil supply banjos. The banjo’s oil outlet holes. in their original state they only have three oil outlet holes so the was a high risk of the cam lobes to the front and the rear of the two banjo’s being starved of oil hence premature camshaft failure.
Are you not losing oil pressure by increasing flow?
Did this noise come and go? Or always present
On my buddy 's 991 the noise was always there since the start-up and progressively fading away as the engine temperature was getting warmer once the car was in motion. As I could read in some other comments on the web,it really is surprising how at Porsche they seemingly got along with such a flaw for over a decade , being the issue affecting both 997 and 991.1 - That's a decade of time and evidently they didn't feel it necessary fixing such an unpleasant weak point in their engines.
Did your buddy check for bore score?
Just drive them & dont loose sleep. Do the low oil sump & IMS kits and dam thing is a beast !
all ok
Haha bro that’s called a normal cold start 😆. Trust me I have 997 turbo. It’ll smoke sometimes because of the flat 6 design. The rest is just normal steam from startup. You don’t even hear the scoring.
1. He confirmed scoring via a bore scope. 2. The 997 turbo is a completely different engine. 3. My 997 turbo has 95k mi and does not smoke.
but noise😭
Nonsense.... this and the IMS paranoia will keep 'specialists' in business for many years.
That's not got bore score
What do the other tests do?
Test things
There's a huge bore score issue with porsche engines i found out recently... especially from cold climate owners up north..
Really ? This M96 enthusiast from up North is calling BS on that.
Do 911 owners not know this is way more common than IMS failures? People seem to have no clue how prevalent this is in the comments and it is wild.
Every 997.1 will get bore scoring. It’s a question of when, not if
@@slowcar828 It is any engine with the lokasil cylinder bore coating. And it seems to be exacerbated greatly if the car is cold started in a colder climate as it instantly begins wearing the coating. Did your car spend most of it's life in a cold or warm climate?
@@slowcar828 the 997.1s with Metzger engines are safe from this (Turbo and GT cars).
@@slowcar828 - I disagree, poor servicing, aged and high mileage cars are affected - simply look at the average mileage and age of those showing signs, then compare against any other brand, model and/or similar age. These cars are tough but not indestructible. Indeed, if your car has >90K and is 12yo it is a matter of time, but then you had 12 years of trouble-free enjoyment. And no, I do not wish to start a lengthy back and forth about being right, or wrong. I’m only trying to balance the argument.
Don’t start an argument if you want. But the number of 50k mile m97’s from California blowing blue smoke out of one tailpipe, not to mention the number of people you can find with this issue on UA-cam alone, makes me think it’s very common.
junk
انها الحلم
that's totally normal and does not show anything more than your air oil separator may need to be replaced.
No, this is different from the smoke you get from AOS failing. AOS would smoke from both exhaust banks, this is just smoking from the left bank which is an indicator of bore scoring.
Wrrrong
Confirmed note scoring
Yikes. I know its been a while, but I hope you at least checked the AOS before you wrote this engine off.
Confirmed bore scoring after scoping it
@@slowcar828 Unfortunate. What ended up happening to the car? Ive got a 996, and as I pile on the miles Im getting more and more worried about the prospect of bore scoring.
Well if any of you need a 3.6L 9a1….mine just gave up on me in October. It’s seized but at least you can send it out while you keep driving
@@slowcar828 where in NY area did you get it scoped? I have similar problem
@@henryatkinson1479 Don't worry. It's another myth, on par with that famous bearing. Just enjoy your car.
i used to have the same sound, but I change my exhaust gasket on the manifold to the head and it fixed that.
Your engine is noisy compared to mine. Watch my video as a comparison
Banks 4,5,6 = Wallet destruction and steel liners fitted.
I know this feeling 👀
that ticky noise is normal for this engine . but i should replace the icv and afm for better idle.
Check out the K997 engine swap videos, may be you want to do that.
Was the tapping noise their when engine is cold ?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hi dude.. how did you solve this problem ?
get the engine rebuilt
Man don't be sill this is normal ,, drive the car and enjoy it and stop worrying about stupidness the marketing workshop people want to sell you shit you don't need just change your oil yearly and the car will be find ,,, if you get a lot of smoke at start up ,, the problem will be your AOS (air oil separator) replace and every thing will be find .... join the group... facebook.com/groups/1515570201802930
Hi, does the noise disappear when the car is warmed up? Mine has similar noise during start up but the noise disappears when the car is warm. Thanks
No it actually makes more noise when warm
Had a similar noise on my E36 - topped off the oil and added a liqui-moly oil additive specifically for lifter tick issues, got the car up to temp, and cruised on the highway at 4k rpm and the tick has gone away entirely. Most of it was likely oil starvation, but the additive buys some nice peace of mind too. I just picked up my 996 yesterday and thankfully don't have this noise there so YMMV, but my E36 fix only cost 15min and $30 so I'd say it's worth a shot.
