Um guys.. I hate to break it to you what 10-bit is used for but...
10-bit footage is for grading purposes. You can (push) the image further in post with 10-bit.
You seem to be going for a natural out of camera look, which otherwise means you literally aren't pushing the image at all.
But if you were to do heavy grading, thats when you notice the difference. 8-bit will tear apart, 10-bit not so much.

Thanks buddy for your input. I understand and agree that 10-bit is most useful for heavy grading and not for minor color corrections. Nevertheless it happens more easily underwater than on land that you screw up your white balance or exposure and having filmed the scene in 10-bit or even in ProRes RAW will be beneficial in rescuing the clip rather than having to throw it away, even if you're going for a "natural look". That was the message I wanted to bring across with my comparison. 😉

I think the Prores RAW just looks so much better overall. A lot smoother transition between shadows and highlights. Would be interested to see some macro shots!

Hi Matthias. Quite hard to tell which is best. I would suggest to go in much clearer waters with colorful subjects to see if you spot differences. Murky greenish waters are less than ideal for testing but this is what you have at hand (and I also have in my own practice UW backyard :-) ).

I agree that this is not an ideal testing situation, but it’s “real life” as many of us don’t have access to clear water with colorful subject all the time. For me it’s important to test it thoroughly in these conditions since this is where most of my dives are happening. 😉

    Great comparison!
If you are filming a colorful reef scene with good visability or macro with proper lights, RAW definitely gives you much more flexibility over 10 bit.
Especially the posibility to properly change the WB in post is a game changer when there is need to match different videos. The downside is the time you need to invest in post as well as the RAW file size. For my experience 10 bit in any LOG format and proper WB adjustment is enough for most situations. But really cool that they finally implemented it!

Thanks for your thoughts on the topic mate. I agree, 10bit and proper WB/exposure is going to be just fine im most situation. Even 8bit with proper WB/exposure will do the job. But as we both know, more often than one would think you get surprised while underwater and don't have the time to make those adjustments - especially if you're diving a spot for the first time and don't know what exactly to expect. So shooting in RAW can really make the difference between being able to use the shot or having to throw it away.

What is the size of frame 400mbit all in VS PRO RES?
My. Canon M have 6.2 mega bite per frame. This is around 1200mbits, in 3 time more than have best mode in GH5(400mbits)

Very nice test and one that will help people. In terms of practical advice, it shows that WB is just a post processing parameter for RAW, but not so for compressed formats. Another situation where I would expect significant differences would be where exposure is not optimal. Of course, we never want that but it happens to me often in situations where you are not able to get set up (surprised by a creature, lighting changes, etc.). Or maybe I had just screwed up and accidentally hit the +/- exposure comp button😎. One has much more latitude in correcting under and overexposure when shooting raw. This is not exactly new information for still photography. But I think it is even more critically important with film underwater because video restricts your exposure options for shutter speed and even aperture -- we can't usually just pop on a ND filter and open the aperture like on land. At least, I don't carry a set of ND filters underwater. So, for example, shooting into a sun halo is tricky and should be easier to do shooting with 10 bit and for sure, with RAW. Basically, if you got the exposure wrong and it has been compressed (even to 10 bit) it is hard to recover. BTW, I have shot raw video on my Mavic Pro 2 and it is a dream. Usually, I shoot auto with D-log (and usually an ND filter) and just apply the LUT in post and it normally doesn't need much other grading. But if something is blown out or under exposed, I have been able to recover. Thanks for doing these -- very thought provoking.

Thanks for your comment mate. Having the ability to change exposure and WB in post in a way that only RAW allows you can make the difference between being able to use a shot or not. As you pointed out, underwater we come across surprise moments on a regular basis and it’s especially hard to anticipate exposure correctly when you only have a few seconds before the scene is over and you can’t ask the whale shark to come around again because you had you’re exposure settings wrong. 🙈
So yeah, RAW can definitely be useful when filming underwater but the drawbacks like much larger file sizes and more computing power for editing also has to be considered. It’s always a compromise, isn’t it. 😉

I just bought a GH5s but have to get the Ninja V. I already had a Ninja Assasin but I believe it cannot handle the 12 bit the GH5s can acheive.
