Just a heads up! This video is my opinion based on what info I could find. Don't take it as canon. See what I did there? ;-) But in all seriousness, I don't have a GH5s nor have I opened up the GH5s to see what is or is not in there.

after you showed those 2 cicles i paused the video to get my head around why they done this, and then it came to me. its genius they can utilise all the lens light captured at different aspect ratios. THEY WERE LITERALLY THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX!!!

I like how half the replies on this are like "NO CALEB YOURE WRONG LOW LIGHT SENSITIVITY IS NOT FOR PROFESSIONAL FILM MAKERS BECAUSE THEY USE LIGHTING" and your video never mentions low light or DR once. It's all about the importance of the multi-aspect sensor and having complete control of choreographed movement of the sensor.

DSLR Video Shooter We are not judges, just exchange information. Even GH4 can utilize same c4k resolution and aspect ratio (4096:2160). I just mention that if the statement is wrong, it is still early to make reedit and fix it. I follow your channel and like it. Don't think it isoffensive.

Shooting the same resolution and aspect ratio does not mean the same sensor area is being used.

I think that your point stands but if they wanted to target this item to obsessive filmmakers they could've just made the IBIS as an in menu option that you could switch on and off. For me the main reason they skipped on the IBIS on the GH5s is for not cannibalizing the GH5

Great sensor breakdown. One thing you didn’t mention was the huge improvement in lowlight. The GH5s destroys the GH5 when it come to high iso performance. A huge benefit

This was a great explanation for someone like me who has a lot to learn and is interested in both models. It seems like the GH5s would be a good buy if you planned on having a professional gimbals or even steady-cam setup, but for people like myself who are just getting started, it's a good idea to buy the GH5 first and then possible add the GH5s later to the arsenal for more locked tripod shots and low light situations.

what about comparing this to the GH6 now in 2023? am I better off to go up several 100 dollars now to get the GH6 or to find a second hand gh5S for a couple of hundred dollar less?
what do you you suggest for a film maker?
I already got three lenses from my GH3...

Yea definitely right. Although I would still say that these cameras are more complimentary to each other for both run and gun/doc guys and indie filmmakers. The idea of control, you can argue that the GH5 low light is good enough since most filmmakers should be lighting anyway, but the GH5S low light is wonderful for run and gunners that can’t bring lights and need that quick shot in darker conditions. And IBIS for filmmakers can still be a blessing depending on the set/scenario they are in

Excellent work Caleb. I'm sold. I can see this camera being the right camera for so many situations, small spaces, stunt work, car work all of which will mostly on a camera mount and not needing IBIS. No camera is perfect for every job. And let us not forget with no IBIS the battery is probably going to last a shade longer.

Panasonic are making some strange decisions. If I wanted the perfect vlogging camera, the G9 has better stabilization than the GH5, but they market it as a photo camera, and take away certain video features like unlimited recording. Then the GH5s with better low light, better slow mo and better auto focus is the better video camera, but without the stabilization takes it out of the hands of most run and gun youtubers. I understand it's not marketed towards us but it's a shame.
The GH5s with the G9 stabilization and you got your youtuber's dream camera. Onto my next dream, Panasonic goes full frame ;) Or Sony starts making flip out screens. Or Canon stops holding back features and makes the ultimate full frame mirrorless camera for youtubers ;)

Vegetable Police I don't think most UA-camr can spend $2500 on cameras. Hell most of the video channels get the camera for free. The day these cameras were announced there were several reviews but only preordering allowed? Kind of dishonest if you ask me. Well at least Kai W did an unbiased review. This is why I like Caleb's channel. He's not a shill.

And what about wedding videographers who don't take photos, don't have control over the light (so a more sensitive camera will help us in A LOT of situations) but we still need a good stabilization for handheld shots? GH5s with G9 stabilization would be the perfect solution.
And yes we are "pro" filmmakers and can spend 2500$. The world (thankfully) is not only habited by youtubers.

Honestly, as a documentary filmmaker I’d rather have no IBIS and better slow mo/larger image/low light capability.
Sure, IBIS is great. Although, even as a run n gun doc filmmaker I wouldn’t handhold the camera unless it was a spur of the moment “I need this shot now” incident. I would at the very least have a small handheld gimble or a shoulder mount with an IS lens mounted which would make up for no lens/camera dual stabilization. Even if I was in a “NOW” situation The IS on lens would make up for most of the shakiness.
I find better low light capability more beneficial as a doc filmmaker than IBIS because I can easily stabilize with small portable tools whereas there is no easily portable tool to fix poor low light situations.

really now ? Ibis is not important for a run n gun filmaker ? did you really said that " a run and gun doc filmaker should have a small handheld gimble ..." ? My God... Do you really have any idea how much time you need to balance correct a handheld gimbal ? BY FAR no way to do this as a run n gun film maker. IBIS is one the most important thing in documentary filmaker on the streets or in a war zone or in a mountain... Imagine a documentary filmaker in the middle of nowhere, at night, or at rain, or at a demonstration or whatever to try to find his gimbal or his shoulder mount... For Gods shake... you really have no idea what you are talking about man.

I do understand but as Run n gun filmaker , i do esport documentary and sport documentary and you do need to moove a lot you dont have time to put your camera all time long on tripod/gimbal + with gh5 i can make broll slow mo so easily of the location , me and my friend are looking for a new cam we were aiming at s1h (way too expensive) and might take gh5s , but really this stab issue is fucking annoying ,(for example i have a 6dmk2) the stabi si so horrible on this i use this cam only for photos . But gh5s stab doesnt seem that bad (at least better than canon) is just that the gh5 stab is the best on the market on the moment so...

Everything you said makes sense, but all I know is that they had my money on lock. If they had made say a GH5s without stabilization and a another model with it, they had me. I was all in. But now I might really have to take a hard look at the a7siii (whenever the heck that actually comes out). Especially if it's going be another 1-2 years or more until the GH6 comes out. I love my GH5, if they made a second GH5s model with ibis they had me on their platform for the foreseeable future, but that certainty is definitely wobbling a bit now with the a7siii imminent.
Also, no filmmaker at that level is going to go to micro 4/3 after they're used to cinema super 35, especially without RAW capabilities. MAYBE for a drone, but with the advancement of full cinema camera drone rigs and Dji's new x7, idk why you'd want to stick a GH5s up there.

Evan Jarvis your a camera wouldn't have m 4/3 lenses though. At best you're using a Speedbooster, which granted can give some pretty great results. But the that very niche market of pro but crazy tight budget, yeah, this might fit.

Joseph Hinkle I don't think that's true. At first the rumor was that it had to do with limitations from dual iso, but I'm pretty sure a Panasonic rep said that the dual iso wasn't the limitation. If that was the limitation though, put in dual iso for low light but sacrifice ibis, I could understand that.

I was really close to just buy a GH5 and glue that damn sensor in place after the shaking destroyed my footage (by using a steadycam and running). IBIS even started to destroy scenes by tracking an object that I filmed. I was super glad after I saw the GH5S announcement, a camera in 2018 without sensor stabilization was a wet dream that I thought would stay fiction forever.

  • @RobbyHuang

Well, I think for me what is weird is that if they're targeting the pro filmmaker who is going to have exact control over their lighting conditions, what do they need the better iso sensitivity for? I feel like that is much better suited for the run and gun, no setup type of filming.
But yeah, they each def have their pros and cons, but still disappointing this one couldn't have JUST added things, rather than add some and take away some.

It is not any IBIS issue that bothers me about Pannies - it is the image quality from the 4/3 sensor. For all their quirks, the Sony 4K video on even an A6500 looks better (more cinematic) to my eye than the Panasonic. And before you attack - I used Panasonics until about half a year ago.

So here's the thing all the people complaining about in camera stabilization, if you use canon at all it doesn't have it built in. You need a lense that has it, which honestly doesn't bother me and I can get great footage without image stabilization, so I am not really sure why people are complaining so much. Also I am planning to switch to panasonic, but still.

PatriotPrepper both have plenty of dynamic range to spare - while arguably the pro filmmakers might appreciate a little more ability to mess with grading in post, the GH5 is not wanting in that department and the GH5s pixel size has other benefits to 4k video than sensitivity.

UA-cam Video-bloggers like me need better autofocus, and the better colors and better low light seems important also.
With my little experience filming one GH5s interview on my channel, I thought it seemed the GH5s has significantly better more stable autofocus performance compared with the GH5.
That's my issue, I want to handheld video-blog but I need a usable AF performance.
GH5s seems to have a more usable AF performance. seems to have better colors, better low light, but the lack of IBIS makes it less suitable for handheld video-blogging.

I can see what your saying but the logic is flawed from the get go.. No serious FILM maker who needs that level of control of sensor movement is using a GH5s. Simply not happening ever. Firstly its still not a Film camera, no proper audio & its micro 4/3rds. So your saying someone who is concerned over sensor movement is considering this over a RED/FS7, because thats the cameras real film makers look into. Being honest it comes down to economics, if they stabilise this what can they offer in the GH6.

GH5s is not for film making . It is same like A7sii is , but sony A7sii has IBIS , there is no excuse for not add it inside because better low light performance . For myself , i rather add IBIS and give me ISO 6400 clean low light performance will be perfect . We all know MTF is not full frame camera . Low light worse than full frame is make sense . 5s should be have good AF and better low light , keep all the GH5 advantage .

Great video. I still wish the GH5S had some sort of sensor stabilization, because if I’m making a film where I need so much control over camera movement that I can’t use a camera with IBIS, I’m going to be using a cinema camera, not a GH5S. I think 99% of the people using GH-series cameras are not at the level of filmmaking that would ever make IBIS a disadvantage. Also, I believe the GH5S was supposed to be at least in part a response to the A7S, and I’ve never heard anyone complain about the fact that the A7SII has IBIS. IMO Panasonic did not want to spend the money to develop IBIS for the GH5S and/or wanted to give people a reason to still buy the GH5 (since almost no one would buy a GH5 over a GH5S if it had IBIS) and has found a way to spin it into a positive thing by saying the GH5S is basically made for “real filmmakers,” which is a genius bit of marketing and something companies do all the time. But I don’t see any “real filmmakers” saying they’re going to switch from the A7SII to the GH5S because “Oh thank god it doesn’t have IBIS.”

True! But most if not all those features will be available on the A7SIII to be announced soon (comparable battery life, body of the A9/A7RIII, dual card slots). Not sure what you mean about audio features as they both have the hot-shoe XLR adapters.

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 років тому +2

First we don't know what will come with the A7SIII. but based on the A9 and A7RIII the menu system will still be subpar to GH5 series, the dual cards are not the same speed (one is SDXC II the other is SDXC I which is not usable for 4K let alone 4K 60p). It will most likely have better autofocus and still be the king of low light, however I am almost certain it won't come with 10 bit color or remove the 30 minute record limit. Again just speculation, on my part as well as yours, as nothing definitive about the A7S3 has been released.
Regarding audio, The GH5s can now do line level audio as well can do timecode syncing through the flash port, which can be key features for both broadcast as well as production shoots.

    • @EmileModesitt
      @EmileModesitt 6 років тому +7

Agreed. I still believe the GH5S should have had IBIS to truly compete with the A7SII and A7SIII, however. I think a lot of if not most filmmakers (the ones using A7SIIs right now and the ones Panasonic are trying to get with the GH5S, not live-event videographers or TV productions) will choose better low light, better autofocus (possibly), larger dynamic range, IBIS and the "full frame look" over features like unlimited recording and timecode sync. That's an opinion of course. Btw, Sonys can accept line level input with the XLR audio adapter (XLR-K2M).

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 6 років тому +1

We will have to see. I just think what the GH5s is bringing, it will severely close the gap in many of these features (outside of autofocus and ibis). From what I have heard the GH5s is suppose to have 14 stops of DR, and based on the footage you can go up to 20,000 ISO with relatively clean noise. Sony may still be better but if the difference at 20,000 are negligible, then that's enough for most user as there's only very rare occasions where one would have to go above 20,000.
Either way it's a great time for filmmakers with so many options.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. In my opinion, considering the Panasonic offer, if you are serious about filmmaking, then the Panasonic EV-1 is for you. Means if you have all the accessory to have control over your shooting, namely gimbals, lighting, crew, cinema lenses etc, then you have the budget for a better body. Hence, the Panasonic EV-1. The size of the GH5(s) body is all about traveling, having light gears to go wherever you want. Marketing wise I think this is a missed opportunity from Panasonic to target the A7SII (III) audience that the GH5s could have addressed.

My understanding is that only by taking out IBIS was it possible to do things like duel ISO and Multi aspect. Therefore they didn't leave out IBIS solely for those who didn't want it, but they became the people the Camera would work for since you could only get these new features without IBIS, at least currently.
To me it's as simple as if they could have left IBIS in, they would have. They would've been able sell way more units and would never have talked about this whole segment who doesn't want it. If it was possible to have it in the first place maybe then they would have made a GH5se or something where IBIS was removed for such specific use cases.
Also this is still smaller than an EVA1 and costs less so it still makes sense to buy some of these for tight spaces or for potentially dangerous spots like near explosions.

Id rather get the Gh5s over gh5. Way better sensor and look same v log no ibis but get a humble you can’t fix dual iso lol and night time shooting. Like the gh5. But u cans fix the ibis in gh5s with a humble period. It’s a film maker camera straight up

The defense of Panasonic's choice here comes across really hollow, like those who say that Panasonic doesn't need good AF because people should be using MF anyway.
Why would anyone buy a GH5s if they're "at a higher level"? Why not just use a Blackmagic Pocket with its more dedicated filmmaking controls and raw or the URSA mini, with all the huge advantages there? Are people using the GH5s who are not "runners and gunners"? Seems like if the GH5s had IBIS and AF that could compete with Sony or Canon or even Fuji, it would be the perfect camera for all those videographers who would never consider or even dream of getting a Red or renting an Alexa.

I agree for the most part.
But, You are saying the gh5s is for more “pro” level filmmakers, but those sorts of filmmakers will also be much more likely to actually light their scenes properly.
Meaning the low light performance is not needed (as much) for them.
Plus proper pro level filmmakers will be going for something more expensive and higher spec than a gh5 / gh5s / a7s mirrorless /dslr etc. They will be choosing a purpose built cinema camera c200 fs7 Or much higher.
So I’m not really on board with that theory.
Not to say the gh5s doesn’t look great.
For me I already have the gh5 and a7s2 so I have low light and 4K 60 etc covered.
So I won’t be getting it.
But if I was going to be buying a new camera right now. I would have considered it for sure.

UA-cam gear reviews and shit has people tripping on what they want vs what they actually need.

This camera seems to fill all my needs as I mostly shoot weddings and some commercial work.
Clean low light performance to iso 12500. Long recording time.
Dual recording is a must as one of my Sony cards failed on me lately.
My camera is 70% on tripod, 25% on Crane Gimbal, 5% hand held maybe.
A set of Gh5 and Gh5s will be perfect.

Well done, Caleb. I love the intro music, too.
Seems like the "wider sensor" concept is a great reason to get an APS-c size sensor. It's already closer to 16:9 w/o taking away IBIS.
Do you list your cage somewhere? It looks like a good one.

exactly what you said, but i´m waiting for the BMPCC 4 K cause it is even better than the GH5s for filmaking due to codecs and performance DNGRAW which can turns on prores RAW with luck once 2019 when the camera is finished and ready to sold

  • @MananaMan

either buy the gh5 or the BMPC4k
the pc4k is waaay better at professional filming and the gh5 is waaay better than the pc4k for versatility i.e. stills/stabilization
the gh5s is on bmpcc's level yet it is more expensive and worse at professional filmmaking
    so ?????

I heard the Panasonic guy say that the GH5s is not an upgrade to the GH5. It would be like saying that the a7r is an upgrade to the a7s. Like you said they are built for two different applications. I'd love to know if all the same resolutions are in the GH5s as there are in the GH5...like the 6k anamorphic and such.

Thank you for posting a really informative review/comparison. I have not upgraded from my GH-4s to GH-5s yet and now I am glad I did not. Having invested many dollars in camera support shoulder rigs, gimbals, tripods, monopods, cages, sliders, jibs, drones, and cranes I am in the category of wanting better use of a larger sensor than ibis. The GH-5S seems like it is targeted for a user like me that will rent the EVA1 as the A camera on our bigger dollar feature length projects and utilize the GH-5S as the second unit camera and our everyday work horse for local commercials and short subjects. I am interested in how the GH-5S will function in 4:3 for anamorphic video acquisition. Dual ISO offers better bang for the buck for our workflow than ibis. We do not vlog or do much run and gun ENG style shooting. Our style is cinema like and it looks like the GH-5S will give better rewards to that style of work so it has now switched into our cart for needed tools instead of just wanted.

Sorry. Its just another camera without IBIS. Its a Sony sensor and has a different form factor. Panasonic did not want to have to redesign their IBIS system so it is without. Not sure who this camera is for. If, as you say, it is for more professional film makers, I doubt very much they would buy this camera over those cameras that do a much better job in low light.
