    I have found Joel’s method of explaining the shot process to be the biggest revaluation that has positively impacted my control as I send an object down range. He is unconventional and deliberate in his teaching. Joel is a phenomena human that gave me his personal time to help explain away my 63 Yr old bad habits. I’d recommend getting exposure to The Turner Method ASAP! As a side note; Joel’s Elk locating and calling techniques make the most sense of anything I’ve heard. Thank you GRITTY for your part in making Joel famous(Rogan introduction). 😎 Thank you StHealthy Hunter for have Joel as a presenter at the Western Hunting Summit.

    I'm not a bow guy, but listening to the theory was interesting. I shoot two stage rifle triggers for the same reason. Feeling the "wall" after pressing through the first stage brings your focus and concentration back to the trigger, where you can, if you have your pull weights set right, almost just think "shoot" and break the second stage cleanly without movement. I find that a 2 lb first stage and 1 lb second stage work best for me.

    I actually realized that I had panic and discovered an amazing video by bow only outdoors. That video basically trained me to shoot with a surprise release so when I discovered Joel Turner, it was basically a refinement and deeper interpretation of what I had recently learned. I'm not saying I've fully arrived at archery perfection but I consistently get a surprise release.

    I have trigger punched my entire life, the last 36 years.
    About 2 years ago i forked up and bought a 28" bow. That thing is crazy unforgiving and showed that i had issues, more than Time magazine.
    Since i have switched from a kisser button to a nose button.
    Switched from a wrist release to the nock2 it thumb button.
    Watched UA-cam videos until my eyes bled. For me i had to focus on holding through the shot, proper grip, rest thumb on trigger while pulling to initiate, dont begin to pull until you have settled. I will also say that i practice rushed shots and intentionally triggering as i am a hunter. Now i have mostly worked that out and can keep the 10 ring at 50 yards most the time. That short axle to axle bow taught me that punching is inconsistent. Some bows are just crazy forgiving.
    That 28" bow is getting replaced after this season, I will be nice enough to warn the buyer of the emotional damage that comes with it😂😂

    Joel is a legend even over here in Australia. I was having trouble with some target panic, and I messaged Joel on insta, he took some time to give me some pointer which helped soooo much. I also know other people who have taken his course and have been helped immensely... go Joel !! I've been shooting a hinge with a saftey so i cant punch myself in the face, I use the release of the safety to start my shot activation. My example of a thought during the shot would be this hinge isn't going off, I think to myself, which overrides the thought, keep activating the release

    Ive struggled with target panic in the past and it sucks. In those times i would just go out with an i don't care attitude and shot like Joel explains the arrow just went to where its sopost to hit. Not knowing what im doing i think man thats totally wrong for that arrow to hit where you want with not aiming. Its great to hear this information. Im not as crazy as i thought i was 😂. Im ready to dive into shot iq. Thanks for what you guys do.

    I love archery. It's meditative, adventurous, builds relationships. I only shoot bare bow, no clicker, release, always split finger and a glove. I have no objection to anything others do. For me, archery is an internal adventure of mind and self control. "The Way of Archery", Ferguson's "Become the Arrow", Japan's Kyudo are on my path. Howard Hill's style and you tube's John Shultz's Hill Style videos are simple and sound for my purpose.

    Okay I'm gonna keep it real, Brian. ...I'd been using the Stan Perfex thumb button and now the Onnx for the last few years. When the JT Stan thumb clicker came out and everyone was raving, I tried to stay off the bandwagon, but finally I broke down and got one. I was afraid I fell for the hype. ...I'm telling you my shot making improved INSTANTLY and SIGNIFICANTLY with the thing - no joke. Even when I didn't have the click dialed in and would overshoot the click and send the arrow, my shooting was STILL BETTER (probably because it was truly a surprise shot)! Just crazy! My groups are tighter and my consistency is easily 75% improved. I'm almost always in the middle. Maybe not the middle of the middle, but always close. I'm just sooo impressed! I haven't even' gone through JT's Shot IQ curriculum or anything. Just applying the moment of "shutting the door on the aiming room" with the click took me to the next level. So often in archery, experts come out with new devices or techniques that they claim will "revolutionize how you shoot," etc, etc. I've found none of them to fully deliver on the promise - EXCEPT this release!
    Okay, so..., enough of the rave. The fact is, I did have to make a few adjustments. First, to better control those small thumb muscles in order to help keep from overshooting the click, I've found that it is essential to setup/load against the wall very strong and remain so - stronger than I use to. Also, I can't relax my hand muscles as I had before. They need to be fully engage - rigid even. Before, I was able to keep hand somewhat relaxed even while my fingers stayed hooked and rigid on the release. These adjustments are all in effort to allow the smaller muscles in my thumb to get used to operating more independently from the rest of my hand and manipulate the button without overshooting shooting the click. Also, I had to reposition the button itself - went to a longer post and moved it well forward. With the regular Onnex, I would place the button at the base of the first knuckle of my thumb and pull through allowing the pressure build up to trigger the release, but I found that JT's recommended button placement - on the fleshy pad (the thumb print area) of the thumb - brought everything together in a more repeatable and astonishingly more accurate way.
    Anyway, sorry this is so long, but that's how enthusiastic I am about this release. And it's all to say, if you're a thumb button shooter, this is the next level! Used as advised, it delivers on promise. ...at least it has for me. And, again, I've not taken the Shot IQ course - and have never meant Joel Turner. Money well spent - finally!

    Awesome podcast. I watch all the Joel turner podcasts that I can find. I would love to hear him speak more about traditional archery release process. I shoot traditional and use his system. It has improved my shot tremendously. But I only hear him talking about easing on the trigger on the release for compound. Does he ease on the hand for trad bow? Just would like to hear more about the point of release for trad bow

    I never had tp until I kept listening to people talk about it. Then I realized panic really isn’t a good word for it. Its more like a block. I have never slapped the trigger. … ever! But I still punch it every time. Ive been doing it for so long that im probably better than 90% of the hinge and thumb shooters out there. But im getting so conscious of how i screw up every shot now . Even the x’s and 12’s. I probably honestly only feel good about 1 out of every 50 shots . I gotta get rid of this index . I think im ready

    So how do you get off a quicker shot? When an animal is walking by and you’re not at full draw yet until it steps behind a tree. You go to full draw waiting for it to walk pass and that’s the last window.. you don’t have 10-12 secs to make the shot..
    Seems like it works better for target than for real hunting situations.
    Would love to ask why Joel uses a trad bow, especially when there is no release involved except for his fingers. Seems like a 3 finger punch to make it go off..

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast

      You just punch the trigger when you have to. Everyone can punch a trigger when it’s needed. I shoot a controlled shot 99% of the time. But I can hold the pin and punch a trigger when I have to make a quick shot-I practice punching the trigger about once a week. If you want a real challenge and you want to get really good at archery, shoot a controlled shot.

    It seems to me that the best way of shooting is the one that is suitable for all conditions and not just for shooting indoors where there is no wind. There are conditions when trigger puncher wins why not then shoot like that always.

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  11 місяців тому +2

      Nah, in my estimation trigger punching as an everyday shooting technique is a recipe for disaster for 90% of the population or more. And if you cannot master the art of a controlled shot, you definitely cannot trigger punch with consistent accuracy. The controlled shot is far easier to master in the long run than consistently and accurately being a trigger puncher. Target panic is VERY REAL and a brutally debilitating condition that has absolutely ended some archers ability to shoot at all. Trigger punching as a technique is like playing with fire--eventually the puncher gets burned. Lots of new archers are very good at punching the trigger and getting great results. But after a year or two, with consistent practice, the mind and body start to involuntarily initiate precognition movements into every shot causing poor results. Poor results lead to higher levels of anxiety and to more and more precognition movements (a vicious cycle begins), which results in an absolute collapse in the ability to shoot accurately at a consistent level. I'm not impressed by new archers are good at punching triggers--most all new archers are great at it. But eventually the honeymoon ends and their shooting ability tanks. It takes time to develop target panic but it will develop in most avid archers who trigger punch--it's just a matter of time.

      @@GrittyGearAndPodcast . How to shoot then in the wind or when you need to make a shot at a certain point in time? To do this, you need a different firing technique trigger punch or you will not get anywhere at all or refuse to shoot.What if you can't refuse?As a result, the shooter needs to be able to shoot both ways and even better to have one technique for any conditions. Ask Turner next time I wonder what he thinks about it.

    • @jackbuendgen389
      @jackbuendgen389 11 місяців тому +1

      @@user-il9ip8no2o or just execute the shot faster...a controlled shot doesn't take 20 seconds. For me it's about 6-9 seconds. If you do need to shoot in the wind keep making the movement that executes the shot. No matter what your next movement is going to be towards the middle of the target. On top of that if you shoot terribly in the wind there are things you can do with your form to improve results on target.
      If you don't believe that pre-ignition movements exists go watch slow motion video of guys shooting. There's always a little twitch the split second before they rattlesnake the trigger. They might grab the bow handle, or flinch their face, it could be micro collapse in form, or you see the whole body tense up. That's why the most accurate and consistent way to shoot a bow is with increasing tension that comes to a surprise break and results in a follow through.
