      He reaped what he sow.
      He thought he can do better than Wander only to get the same short stick.
      They both neglected her in the end. There's not much Wander does for Jinx really, focusing mostly on her older adopted siblings.
      Same happens with Silco really, he has his grand ambition and do you ever see him spending familly time with Jinx despite calling her a daughter? No, he spends it planning, scheming, organizing. The most time they spend is when he needs his injection or she screws up. He could be a good parent figure if... he was doing any parenting.
      He really isn't.
      The moment in her hideout when he is screaming at her, the moment the topic switches to something that furthers his agenda (refined hex crystal sphere) that's all he has in mind.
      I liked Silco and Wander both, but consider how good of a mirror they are to Jayce and Viktor: in their goal to do great (for everyone), they forgot how to do good (for their closest familly). And best part is, Jayce and Viktor will also have some problems to ... solve? cope with. No spoilers here.

      @@obsidianmaster6782 I think that is what they were going for, but it's not quite the same. The council voting for peace was actually pretty meaningless, there was never going to be peace because as Silco said, he couldn't/wouldn't hand Jinx over. It was meant to be symbolic, but it doesn't land the same, and in fact I thought kind of flipped it on its head (a good thing in my book.) In the moment Powder decided to fully embrace Jinx, she stopped being a jinx. She actively made the choice to become what the city, and her circumstances made her. She became more of a reckoning, than a jinx, and in a way it was the reckoning the city had earned for itself.
      Jinx condemned the city, and finally saved herself (Vi didn't save her, Vander didn't save her, Silco didn't save her, it was all on her for once.) Poetic, and tragic at the same time.

    This was one of the most well written animated shows of the century (really, not even joking here).
    Most, if not all, of the characters are three dimensional. Even the characters who are portrayed as being "evil" are multi-faceted, and in the end you really can't help but hope for everyone to have a happy ending, because you see the struggle they all go through in their own regards.
    Hell, Silco became my favorite character at the end of this season even though he's literally the villain. But his whole character arc was done SO meticulously well that you cannot help but sympathize with him, and inevitably be sad when he dies.
    I cannot wait for the second season of this series.

      I’d honestly say one of the most well written shows in recent history, not just within animation. I feel like most people I know aren’t giving it a proper chance since it is animation and they’re all missing out on great story telling. It can be difficult to get into the setting of the world (I’ve never played league but I do enjoy other video games and don’t need much prompting to watch things like this) but even just the writing of the characters, their nuances, their relationships and motivations! That alone is what made this show so deep and hard hitting to me, really something they nailed and the animation for every single scene and shot was just so perfect and helped to convey so much more to the story

    Arcane is so good because of the unidealized, diverse characters and how real they feel. The animators did an extraordinary job with their facial expressions. Every line or wrinkle on their faces communicated each emotion so well that... you can help but be captivated by the interactions, for example the fight between Ekko an Jinx. The way they interact with the enviorment, with each other, the way the writers match the key moments of a character evolution with the background, my favourite example being in Act 2, Viktor runs along it's toy boat inside a crevases in Zaun, stumbles and falls, in Act 3 he runs along the boats that leave the harbour of Piltover, without a crutch, begining his transformation that leads to the Glorious Evolution. The way they showed the slow descent of Jinx into madness, from an insecure girl with emotional problems into a teen who's sanity is eaten by grief an guilt. Each characters felt like it was the protagonist.

      Or each character was the antagonist, really. I mean sure they all had their reasons, but every single one of them made the mistake of being blindfolded by their own agenda and/or emotions. This probably was on purpose, to have everyone more easily identify with their "loved ones", but the most important part is, that it didn't hurt the story. Somehow it feels we got a decent story with decent characters where everyone is at fault and nobody is. It actually feels natural. That's an unbelievable achievement with this amount of "main" characters in such short runtime.

    • @rheimy7819
      @rheimy7819 2 роки тому

      As an animator, I can tell you that it’s not only the animation that contributed to the gorgeous facial expressions, it’s the whole process behind the modeling, rigging and look dev that also paid off.
      For context, rigging is like an skeleton that the model needs in order to be animated. Sometimes the rig is not that good and even in hands of an amazing animator, the rigging might make the animation look wonky. However, the rigs in arcane are absolutely beautiful... they had to sculpt and “program” the cheeks, the way the lips move when the characters are talking, and even the way the skin moves when the characters are walking.... the work done by fortiche is unbelievable

    • @apoclypse
      @apoclypse 2 роки тому

      @@rheimy7819 There are a lot of great instances of the facial rig but my favorite is when Caitlin swats the food being offered away and you see a closeup of Ekko's face and you can see his lips subtly move into an almost snarl. It's freaking amazing what they did on the show technically and I hope they do a VFX breakdown or something at some point to showcase their awesome work.

However, I think it’s fine in this final episode because of the final theme “What could’ve been”. The poetry of the show is hinged on our emotional investment on “what could’ve been” from Episode 3 to Episode 9. Vander, Claggor, and Mylo _could’ve_ survived. When she was a child, her Jinx persona was always squashed by her attachment to Vi which she had as a role model but when Vi left her at rock bottom her stronger true nature started taking over (also fed by Silco) and she didnt feel right with that cause she knew Vi wants Powder, not Jinx. I really like this ending... yes it is abrupt and does not resolve everything but at the same time this has always been Powders story. To be more specific Powders journey to becoming Jinx. And the moment that rocket impacts is where there is no turning back anymore... Powder is truly gone so it ends in that moment. It also follows the motive that every single episode had: end with a cliffhanger or a question.
    The majority of people who just want some popcorn entertainment will probably hate this ending but this show is more than that. It is an artistic masterpiece not just because of its style or the quality of the animation but also because how it simply doesn´t compromise. It is an adult show that confronts the viewer with some quite heavy subject matter and it does so without asking for permission nor doing it only for shock value.

    I just realized as you talked about it, that the newest “fallen hero“ that they are painting onto their mural is the kid that Jinx mistook for Vi and killed. THERE IS SO MUCH DETAIL IN THIS SHOW, OH MY GOD.
    For me the detail I’m stuck on is how I spent most of the show hoping Vi would get through to Jinx and heal her somehow, and by the final minutes of the finale, I was hoping for the exact opposite. I wanted Jinx to be as impulsive and destructive as she was because it was authentic, and her trying to be Powder again for Vi was never going to be authentic, not after all that time and trauma. Plus, in Jinx’s mind, the only person who’s loved her unconditionally is Silco, and I think the fact that he loved and accepted her even after she shot him is what gave her the strength to go on and carry out vengeance on Piltover. I’m devastated for what means for peace in their cities, but the fact that the show still made me root for Jinx and Silco to win even a little bit is amazing.

    The one thing that i wished for after watching ep 4 was that Silco actually cared for Jinx and was a "good" father to her, cause not only does her character need that but also that is what would make for a great story. So many times shows want to just make it an easy out for the "hero's" and i'm using that term very loosely here, makes the villain a clear villain and just uses the person for their own ends. Arcane made me cry when watching the bad guy die. His methods were bad, and he was a murderer, but as the show never had him do a sinister smile, a wink at the camera, his dying words and those saying Vi will abandon her gain, was ones that he truly meant, he cared for Jinx and thought she would be abandoned again by her sister if she left with Vi. It truly is sad how jaded Silco sees everyone else besides Jinx. When those final credits rolled, I felt like I was going to throw up and as much as I want to see what comes next, my heart needs a break to recover.

    I would’ve loved for the Viktor and sky scene to sit for a little longer, just that little bit longer to fully grasp the severity of the situation.
    Or the Jayce scene when he had realised what we had done. The acting and voice acting is great and nuanced but even that requires character moments beyond the headline of eg closing the boys eyes.
    I’d want to see and hear the conversations discussing why he felt that way, what he was going to do with it.
    A perfect example I have was Jayce and Viktor bridge scene where 2 people made a snap judgement that altered their relationship on a macro scale….which led to Viktor keeping quiet about his relation to singed and the Shimmer variant. That was really rushed…

    I rewatched this show today, and it's my favorite serious animated shows ever.
    Not sure how I didn't think about this, but Vi is a protector and trades her scared blue haired frightened sister for another blue haired mismatched girl who she feels needs protecting.
    Caitlyn has heart just like powder, but I didn't appreciate the whole idea until now.
    Jinx felt abandoned and that she didn't fit, and Vi showing up with another blue haired girl that's also a misfit... very smart.
    I love this show so much. Vi, Caitlyn, Sevika, Silco.... What amazing characters.

    The ending scene cliff hanger. I guess this signifies that war will proceed with Silco dead then the earlier agreement is void. I'm just hoping that none of the counselors survive that blast. Maaaan what a cliffhanger.

    It’s rare to see a character like Jinx in such a humanised lense - seeing her as an innocent little kid for 3 40-minute episodes and then watching her go insane is just so heartbreaking but because of it, it’s so hard to hate her even after everything she’s done

    • @hustler3of4culture3
      @hustler3of4culture3 2 роки тому

      Indeed, it IS hard to hate her after what she did. I can't decide if it's the council, or Vi that I blame more, but jinx? Nope.

    So I just finished the final episode and holy shit no thoughts, head empty. I immediately came here to see if everyone was as stunned as i was. Good god that final scene got to me. Ive played League of Legends for a few years and studied the lore pretty extensively and even though i knew all of the main character’s stories, this show absolutely demolished my expectations. Every scene is written perfectly, the pacing, the character portrayals, the attention to detail, the little easter eggs that only lore nerds like me will get, EVERYTHING about this show is a work of art. Even if you don’t play League, even if you don’t like Riot Games, even if you don’t like cartoons, you have to watch Arcane, period.

    Totally random detail, but I think the better term for 4:40 would be manslaughter. (Powder didn't intend to kill them by any means, but her negligence/recklessness directly caused their deaths anyway.)

    I think they hit the spark as good as they could, with the ending. As I watch it as an tradegy, where the end is complete, life does not get better for zaun, hope dies with Silco. Powder leaves, and Jinx takes a stable controll. And you just want to hear it becomes better. watching it withouth the idea of a season 2 in piltover, is what got me the absolute dread. and thats why the ending is perfect

    For the longest time I’ve felt dissatisfied/disappointed that animated media has to be synonymous with “cartoons”. “Cartoons” are synonymous with children shows and a lot of people are ignorant to any other way of looking at animated media, and the pass off a recommendation because of its choice to tell its story.
    It annoys me that people have to preface recommending or discussing an animated show with, “it’s not for kids”. I hope one day the animated medium will become just that, a medium to tell all/every kind of story under the sun and people will not auto assume it’s for kids.
    Other than that, I agree with everything you said, Arcane moved me, and as much as I want to say I can’t wait, I can because I want them to take as much time as they need to make the second season on par or greater than this one.

    "The Birth of Legends." I love it. So much. I haven't played it seriously for years; But we there from the start. I don't care what's "ret conned" ? Is that the word? But the lore has drawn me in over and over again. I have been waiting for something like this. Hoping. it's here. 10 years after my hope was thrown out into the Universe. Good review well spoken. Let us thirst for more...

    Seeing Arcane Season 1 for me really made me cry in joy. The animation and arts(including music) aside which is just so gorgeous, the characters and world-building is the one that made me so happy. Ever since I started reading novels, I also started abandoning TV series, movies, and even animes because I realized how simple or nonsense their world and story are. Novels I read have so many complicated characters and the black and white (good and evil) concept is almost non-existent to them but will only slap you with how dark things can be in reality and how realistic their character is. I'm so fed up with stories that only have heroes and villains, then the entire story will run that way till the end. Even though arcane characters aren't the greatest I've seen including the characters in the novels I read, I still love it because of the reason that this might be the start, the start of the end of those typical and boring characters that many story writers on TV series, movies, and even animes fed people from the beginning of time. Which I, personally find it a waste, waste of budget, talent, and efforts of the people involved. Now arcane really set the bar higher, hopes many more like this will come, ofc not the whole same quality but better stories at least.

    You mentioned how bright and colorful the action scenes like the Vi and Jayce fight were and it brings up an interesting point. The story is ultimately a tragedy, the big fun anime fights are but brief reprieves from the sorrow. We get distracted by this big flashy AMV fight and then immediately snap back to the consequences.
    The Ekko fight was cheerful and playful until the actual fight Wich was quick, brutal and filled with sad emotions. The Jayce fight scene showed these characters smiling as they literally break this drug addicts to piece, performing Mortal Kombat style X-ray moves on them and then it ends with a child worker being accidentally killed. Then our "hero" the one we were told twice that had a good heart, tired justifying dead kids to Jayce (and kinda to herself). Jayce didn't except that such a thing was necessary, and Vi then was willing to fight him over stealing his own gauntlets that he made.
    Then she marched on to fight Sevika. To which we get another light hearted and bombastic fight scene. Only for Vi to drop down to her knees and cry out a heart wrenching scream. As she realizing that it was all pointless, her getting her ass beat trying to defeat Sevika served no purpose, Silco wasn't even there. It was a hollow victory, it didn't serve anything. And unbeknownst to Vi, running up and punching Silco in the face would be just as pointless. It would change things politically, but it would bring her any closer to her own goal, getting her sister back.
    All three of these anime tier fights snap back to the consequences or purposelessness of them. They are momentary escapes for both the audience and the characters themselves. They smile and have fun doing something cool and easy only for reality to hear them over the head yet again.
    That's what's so interesting about the fight scenes in Arcane, the sad and desperate ones in the first half of the show fit narratively. The big anime fights have ludonarrative dissonance, but in a self aware way.
