Credit were credit is due, French animation Studio Fortiche is also responsible for Arcane as much as the creative team in Riot, they did collaborate with them on several music videos like Rise and the first KDA video (both which have the same 3D style with beautifully painted textures), even back then in 2018 everyone (myself included) were begging them to create a show using that exact style, and here we are now three years later with this wonderful show, hopefully season 2 will be as good as season 1 or even surpass it.

Yeah this is the biggest thing riot has control over it. A lot of video game adaptations don't have the people who created the game as the head of the creative team.
Also the real reason is because league was just the 12 year lore for creating arcane

The animation has a very French feel to it, so all credits to the animators, but the two writers were both long term RIOT employees. The story was created by these two, as well as one other RIOT employee, and one professional from outside the company. This really looks like something created by fans with passion and it shows.
The structure of the TV-show is not my favourite, lots of sub-plot-arcs all mixed up together. I understand why they did it and it allows you to introduce lots of characters in the shortest possible time, but it does mean its difficult to engaged with any character until you get well within the TV-series. This is normally a dangerous structure, but I suspect the main audience was the League of legends fans, who already knew the characters so were already engaged.
Clearly this also attracts non-fan as well and I suspect that was due to the animation, it is beautiful and unique.

Arcane is an example of a story with a focus on "show, don't tell" made by people that seem to love the material they work on...two primary things that made it successful imo.

    • @petriew2018

it's also a great example of disciplined storytelling. They had dozens of characters they could have included as fan service but had the good sense to keep the story laser focused on just a few of them. Anything unnecessary to the narrative was at best hinted at or simply left for later. So many shows get badly bogged down in their 'extended world' that so much of it winds up as merely filler because it's not advancing the plot
Just taken as a stand alone work, Arcane is a textbook example of the importance of knowing the story you want to tell. The work it's set in is frankly insane to anyone not familiar with it already, but it doesn't matter because the story is not about that world. It always comes back to the core narrative and the characters that matter only to that narrative.
honestly this is the element that's missing from most modern hollywood productions. They focus too much on the style or building their 'extended universe' to set up the sequel... and forget the story they're supposed to be telling along the way.

The thing I love most about Arcane is how real the characters are. Take Jayce for example (spoilers for Arcane ahead):
At first it looks like a boring story I saw milion times before. Our hero is zero, but has great ideas. He team up with a guy who is also a zero but can help him and then they have success. Later our hero is popular and he starts to be selfish, doesn't listen to his friend who helped him get to the top and makes mistakes because of his selfish behavior.
And now take a look at Jayce. Begining is same. Zero to hero story. But now Jayce is different, he listens to the ones with experience (listens to Heimmerdinger to not showing new Hextech inventions), his friends (he cares about Victor and listens to him), he still wants to sacrifice his lifes work for greater good.
This is what I love, the feeling that every character is acting becuse of their experience and becuse of who they are.
Awesome video by the way :)

Exactly! Those characters are incredibly well written and behave like real people would. For every single one you can pinpoint their motivation and they all act accordingly. This is something I was missing from almost every movie and series I watched in the last 5 or so years.
That's what you get when a show doesn't underestimate its audience and has competent writers, who want to tell a good story, something extraordenary and fulfilling to watch.

I think the turning point for my perception of his character was when he left Mel to go see viktor in the hospital. I fully expected for Jayce to throw him to the side but time and time again he never forgot about viktor. Even in the last episode he never forgot about what he set out to do.

I think that overall Arcane plays and subverts popular tropes. Jinx in-game was a Manic pixie dream girl, now we see her as broken and mentally ill person. I'd say that the first truly outstanding video game animated series was Castlevania. As it turns out the secret to converting a video game to a series/movie is making a good series/movie, but you base it around a video game. I remember an interview by Peter Jackson where he said he and his co-writers put together what they thought would be a compelling story for LOTR, and then satisfied with the results went back and tried to incorporate as much Tolkien lore as possible.
I feel like Riot did the same thing with Arcane. At it's core this is a great story well-told. They probably came in after several passes of the script and then said OK, what can we put in from the LoL lore without detracting from the heart of the story. Which is where I think a lot of VG adaptations go wrong - they start with a laundry list of 'must-haves' from the game and then try to create a story out of it.

You're forgetting the fact that League already had a bunch of interesting lore!
They already had a bunch of base story elements to pick and choose from in order to create a relevant story, and THEN cherry pick lore details.
Unlike LOTR, League already had a billion dollar audience which pretty much guaranteed enough viewers to rake in a profit. Because the game has such a dedicated fanbase, they had to deliver lore relevant details, because not doing so would make their target audience *very angry.*
I used to read the lore in "the old days", so I'm interested in seeing how this turns out. They have so much fun stuff to build upon!

One of my favourite things about arcane is its portrayal of women. They have the “crazy but cute” stereotype in Jinx but she’s *developed* instead of a another Harley Quinn and her attractive appearance is never a plot point/joke. They have women who are built, badass and muscular but also feminine. The way they portray female relationships is also incredible without fetishising it by being overly sexual like a lot of shows have a tendency to do but still including a more intimate element with Caitlin and vi.
Also the redesigns from the game characters are great and also make more sense, Jinx still has a cropped shirt and tighter clothes without her deign being sexual to the point of impractically, caitlyn still has a feminine dress sense while also not being impractical. It *works*
I can honestly say arcane is the best portrayal of women in this kind of environment ever

Well concluded. As a parallel, few years ago I had the chance to attend a keynote with former Marvel CEO who explained the exact same thing: the reason why the MCU has been so successful compared to other superhero adaptations (which used to be overly mediocre compared to what came after) is because they gave full power to the creative minds, basically let artists do what they do best, let the others do what they do best. Sadly, lately creatives have been put aside in favor of themes and messaging.. I'm so happy Arcane has managed to show everyone that creativity is the true driver of success, whatever your story tells and whoever your characters are.

One of the reasons Arcane succeeds where other video game adaptations fail is it's willingness to let go of the game mechanics and focus on the narrative. Game movies and shows often tell stories that incorporate game mechanics into the narrative, and that often leads to stories that feel forced and un-natural. Video games are in a unique position where they can incorporate narrative and gameplay mechanics because the audience is actively involved in the experience so the mechanics (well designed) can flow seamlessly into the narrative. Shows and movies, on the other hand, are limited in how they can interact with their audience. When a game mechanic isn't being employed by the audience, trying to incorporate it into the narrative feels forced and un-natural. It's like trying to heavily incorporate reading into a movie, It can work, but the engine isn't designed for that medium. (If you have a movie that is constantly forcing the audience to read, you're going to start to lose the audience.)
In any event (TLDR), Arcane works where other Video Game adaptations fail because it leans into the medium (TV show/visual) using high quality animation, character development, world building, music, and storytelling rather than trying to push the "this is a video game" narrative too hard.

Ironically, that is why North America is such a failure of a region in League of Legends.
Instead of building up a team, they import what's hot and only leanr the hard way that 5 good random might not magically work perfectly as a team.

I have never really gotten into league of legends, I've listened to the music and know very little about some of the characters backstorys but that's about it. When arcane came out I was worried that I was going to get most of what it was talking about but I could understand exactly what their world was like and honestly I almost cried seeing how astonishing it was. This is just a 9 episode show and everything about it just made me want more and more especially with the last part of ep.9 everything for the council and the two cities were looking up while the main characters situation was looking down and going into how twisted powder really became it's honestly a show that was completely worth watching in my personal opinion

There's something you missed in that fight, it wasn't just an analogy. The call back to their childhood is why ekko won, he uses the familiarity of the game they used to play to trick jynx into firing in a particular pattern.
If you watch jynx shoots in the same pattern as powder and ekko moves to dodge prior to jynx even shooting. He trapped her into doing exactly what he wanted out of muscle memory, think of the bridge scene from that MiB movie that used time travel where he already knew where the next shot would come. Ekko just proved why he's exactly the person to use time manipulation better than anyone else in the world, because he doesn't even need it to know exactly what you're going to do.

I want to add one thing - Arcane also solved the problem with LBGT and strong female characters in shows! Everyone there have their own personality and it is amazing, I hate when all I see on screen is 'another strong independend perfect woman' or 'another LGBT+ character who have no personality instead of being LBGT'. I'm so happy to finally see strong female characters who arent perfect and glorifield as well as LBGT characters who have their own personality traits, goals, fears and etc unrelated to their sexuality.

You know, I've been a League Player since Season 2 and I stopped playing it regulary a few months ago. But I still love this universe. Riot achieved to create a universe that is so versatile and still somehow feels connected. They put so much effort in creating stories around these characters even they wouldn't have to. Only a few people actually read the lore but those are really invested into the stories because they are still written with so much care. And to be honest ... I couldn't imagine Arcane to be bad. It has a way too good base for that. But that it would be such a masterpiece? I couldn't comprehend what was happening when I first watched it. My mind was just blown away. I never expected them to create such an intimid story. We all knew Fortiche animation would be stunning but that they would deliver maybe the most exciting work of animated art since Into the Spiderverse - it just makes me happy to be part of this community. For once I can be proud to say that I love League without feeling weird about it because it got such a bad reputation...
You know what makes me even more excited? We will get a freaking League MMORPG!!! And this could change everything.

0:38 I didn't play league that much, but I have played it and didn't remember it having any kind of a story. I actually just finished watching Arcane with my mother, and we watched this show because of the netflix trailer that appeared after we finished watching another show. Credits started rolling and my mom went into the other room for a minute, and I started looking at my phone and she comes back into the room and the trailer is playing and my mom asked "what's this?" I looked up to see what was playing and I'm like oh that show's called Arcane, I don't know much about it but my friend (who's very much NOT a gamer) said it was really good. So my mother and I started watching and totally loved it.
I don't even know how this show was connected to the games, I didn't recognize any of these characters or names (actually I think I do vaguley remember a character being named Catlyn, but that's about it), and it was pretty easy to forget this show was even connected to a video game. Honestly that might have been for the best as I had no preconceived notions on how anything is supposed to be or turn out. This show was very good and I enjoyed it very much, and I'm not sure if it would have resonated with me quite as much if I knew all of these characters and what was going to happen.
Good example: For the first 2 episodes I think Powder was my favorite character in the show, she's really lovable and likable, but after what happens in episode 3 she takes a heel turn and becomes one of the main antagonists of show. So by episode 5 I'm started to really identify with VI and understand what's she going through and share than sense of loss that she's feeling as I'm saddened by the fact that this sweet learn girl, who was stricken with a terrible tragedy, had turned into the evil witch who seems to have the personality traits of both Gollum and Harle Quinn. There was a real sense of loss that made me really invested in her story and that show. If I had known powder was destined to become a villain, I'm not sure I would ever become nearly as invested in her character as I did and experienced that same sense of loss that let me connect with Vi and her struggles the way I did.
I already want to watch it again, heck, I already wanted to watch it again before I was even done watching it the first time. Unfortunately that will have to wait for another time, because I pretty much only watch TV with my mother, so it's usually something my mom wants to watch. The fact that the first episode of this show was compelling enough that my 67 year old (very much NOT a gamer( mother wanted to watch speaks volumes about the show.

"Hyper-stylized, bite-sized moments of intense visual metaphor" is a really neat way of describing the music video scenes in the show - and I agree: They stand out so much and return so frequently that they really come to define Arcane. Cheers!

I would have to argue the compelling thing that makes arcane so intriguing is in fact the lore.. the fact that from the beginning of the games release they kept its story highly intertwined with the game. From books to in game newsletters to eventually the online whole history is a show to the thought and life they breathed into each and every character rich with its history. The director and animation team did as amazing as possible but give leagues its due. Its never not been a lore driven game

From the building the rift documentary on UA-cam for Arcane... I love that quote "There's enough video games where the audience asks for a movie or a show for years and years and years, and they make it and it sucks. And then guess what people stop asking. We were afraid of that. We were like, if we make something that... isn't at least good then we're really really harming the league IP..."
I have never played League of Legends. I know i would like it. But never had the time too. Hearing just that makes me realize how much the studio cares. That by itself. More so because they made a show that topples most shows nowadays... Deserves my attention.

I have never played LoL, only seen the Jinx intro cinematic and the KDA popstars video so its safe to say i know 0.000% of the story of the game but i was aware of if because, try as i may, its unavoidable to not see advertisements or twitch streamer playing it. That said i absolutely LOVE Arcane. The story telling, the animations, the emotions, the characters, literally everything about it made it instantly one of my top 3 animated series of all time. This is because games and game worlds can have very amazing stories and settings that are obviously meant to be experienced by playing the game rather than watched, but for a game like LoL this is a great vessel to deliver a story you cant get in game. Arcane proves that an Overwatch show could be possible, or an ARK show because these games have story just not really detailed in the gameplay. It also proves that even with well established stories, you could make shows around games if its done right and given the time to articulate that world. Movies just don't have enough runtime to tell game stories.

Why werent they expanding on what they had,?why isnt there more ways to enjoy this world they have been building??
And then a couple of years ago, they announced a few new games and thats when I knew, we would be in for a journey.
Legends of Runeterra? Arcane? this is just the beginning, I can't wait to see the massive universe they will have in 5 years.
Arcane 2 will be out, maybe Arcane 3 will be in the works aswell, or after Arcane 2 they will make a different series, focused on the other side of runeterra, maybe Ioania, or Freljord.
We will have more games to enjoy, specifically Im super excited about their MMORPG!! I can't wait to be able to "physically" walk around the streets of Piltover or explore the beautiful region of Ioania.

Left field take: I enjoyed Arcane immensely and quite frankly its up there with one of the best shows I've seen ever. But here is the kicker, I went in blind, I do not play LoL I know nothing of its universe of characters outside of the KDA video for being insanely catchy and going viral.
So that makes this the highest praise possible when I say: Arcane stands on its own, LoL could burn off the face of the world tomorrow and Arcane would still be amazing. I have no idea which characters would enjoy "Plot armor" and which ones were disposable inserts or what the general evolution some character would follow would be. The show is good through and through, Visuals like a once in a lifetime perfect cake, exceptional writing, sound design that feels like it was agonized over.
If Arcane wants to make any bold statements about video game properties and making media based off them it should be this: Focus on making a good show that can stand on its own first, and perhaps, only do that, make a good show.

One of my favorite things about it is that it lets women have unattractive facial expressions when they're grieving or angry and the like.
It's as dumb for women to have to look pretty when they are suffering extreme grief as men having to look handsome and attractive even if they are suffering extreme grief, yet it was incredibly common that only "evil" characters get to have unattractive facial expressions when they are women (and sometimes men too). It's been slowly changing the past maybe five years, and it's fantastic. Not being constantly attractive doesn't make a heroine or hero less of an appealing character.

It is not only easily the best video game adaptation of all time, but one of the greatest shows of all time. Because of Arcane's success people now will take both video game adaptations and animated shows more seriously, then before, which is not a small feat.

I can’t really say Arcane “solved” the video game problem. It’s a masterpiece for sure, but they didn’t have to adapt the game, they adapted lore. Big difference. The gameplay doesn’t factor into it at all. A show like The Last Of Us however is a recreation of the same story that plays out in the game, and so it’s kind of on them to solve the real video game problem, which is adapting the video game itself whilst somehow making sure the lack of gameplay doesn’t change the experience too much.
Other things where video game adaptations fail can more or less be choked up to artistic incompetence, rather than actually having a unique creative problem to solve. It’s the same with book adaptations, you need to compensate for what you lose by telling the same story in a different medium.
Edit: the hint is in the name:
    ”Adaptation”
    What is Arcane adapting?
Not League of Legends the video game, that’s for sure? It’s an adaptation of online text-based League lore, not a video game. So it’s literally not a video game adaptation.

I don't think how much gameplay is involved really matters here. How much of Castlevanias actual gameplay is involved in it's adaptation? The same goes for detective Pikachu, the sonic movie, and even the Angry birds movie. Like Arcane they just adapted the lore with nods to certain abilities and weapons. This is like saying that only 3D RPG adaptations could be considered truly tackling the video game problem when it really isn't the case.
The main problem is how videogame stories are perceived by people who don't play the game and how they choose to adapt it.

@@psy_99 You just said there are several good movies and shows based on video games already, so how is Arcane breaking new ground there (besides being undisputed top of the pecking order)? Arcane isn’t an adaptation of the game, it doesn’t create the same experience for a different medium. This is something video game adaptations have so far not gotten right and it’s been that way for ages. The only groundbreaking thing about Arcane is how amazing and popular it is, not that it actually managed to translate the experience of the game to a series format. People aren’t gonna watch Arcane and then go play League and get anywhere near the same deal. People don’t watch Sonic the Hedgehog and then go start playing Sonic games like ”just what I remember”, not with detective Pikachu and not with Castlevania. But if for example The Last Of Us series is good, people will watch it, then they can go and play the game and experience the same thing but with an interactive element. If Uncharted is a fun action-adventure movie, people will go to the games and experience the same thing, except their hands are on the controls.
That’s the real video game problem, translating the game’s experience to a medium that is not interactive.

tbh i think that's exactly why it solved the issue. because a lot of adaptations focus so much on having to incorporate the gameplay side one way or another that they don't realize this isnt a game, it's a movie or a show or whatever it is. there is no interactive element like a game, so the lore is what needs to have the attention, not the game part.

    • @The_Story_Of_Us
      @The_Story_Of_Us 2 роки тому

@@faeb.9618 I’m not talking about incorporating gameplay, I’m talking about compensating for it. When you take away gameplay, you’ve removed a contributing component, and if you don’t counterbalance that, the experience will be less. Plain and simple.
But Arcane doesn’t have that problem. It is not an adaptation of League of Legends, it is an adaptation of League of Legends lore and has nothing to do with the actual experience of playing League of Legends, it is not an adaptation of a game. It is an adaptation of short stories based on video game characters. Not the same. Arcane hasn’t solved that, it’s like saying you solved the ”making a good Pancake” problem by sidestepping it and making a delicious cupcake instead.

    Absolutely agree with you.
How I see league of legends is the what if story grabbing characters from the world of runeterra (and alternate what ifs with LoL skins). That’s why there can be duplicates fighting each other.
These characters are legends taken from different areas after the culmination of their arcs with only whispers of their lore through the words given which can get the story wrong.
Arcane is a look behind the curtain imo and the caricatures given through Lol showing the birth of legends, both good and bad.
As an aspiring multimedia artist and storyteller. I can only dream and work to make a story as amazing as Arcane.

As someone who knew (and still knows) absolutely nothing about League, I also ended up watching the entire series three times in full. I never once felt like I was missing anything from this show because I had never played the game. There were never any moments that jumped out at me as "I guess that's a reference for the fans?" or something. It felt _complete_ as a story, which...arguably no other video game-to-movie/TV show has really done well before? At least to my knowledge. Netflix's Castlevania is literally the only other one that comes to mind.
Don't make a movie or show for the sole purpose of bringing in the fans. Make a movie or show because there's an actual story you want to tell in that universe and the fans will come.

You missed one of the very very most important elements... you see people through the eyes of a character.. how that character perceives the person he is looking at. (while you are in person view). Just check out how different Jinx look like through the eyes of Echo or VII.. and how VII looks through the eyes of Kaitlyn (clearly she is head over heels in love with her)
This subtle fact blew me away.. its something that can only be done in animation and they pulled it up masterfully..
However sadly lots of peoples eyes and brains are not trained to perceive such subtle differences but mine is.. due to RL.. circumstance.. and thats why it blew me away all the more.

The "Video game problem" has been solved a few times, all in different ways but with one common aspect.
It is only solvable when the creative team really enters a narrative storytelling headspace with the singular goal of telling a good story in a compelling way. That space has no room for ludology, fanservice, or brand management as first principles.
Video game adaptations very closely parallel all the 80s cartoons (and many since) that were little more than episodic toy commercials. If they don't stand on their own as creative works free from external business concerns, they are much more likely to fail and fail hard.

No. They did not solve the "video game problem," because what they did with this show transcends video games altogether. I am always the first one to call Hollywood out for their stupid political agenda and for putting that stuff in movies or shows just to show how woke they are. It often just feels preachy or fake. But I can't do that with this show, even though it is about diversity and inclusion. It's just not only about that. In this case it was actually done right. The characters were amazing. The writing was fantastic. I was mesmerized by the art and attention to detail. It was an absolute masterpiece, and I don't know anything about the game.

    TLDR
Question. How did Arcane make a good video game motion picture or television show?
Answer: It was made by their own hands. They didn't hand it off to some studio to make, they made it themselves.
