Interesting theory. Honestly this show incorporates so much symbolism I wouldn't be surprised if the writers made that character design choice fully intentionally. What's great about this show is that you don't need to pick out all the foreshadowing, parallels and others symbolisms to enjoy a well-told tale with deep characters, but picking up on these small details adds just that much more to the experience.
Why fucking why every emotional moment of this show makes me inevitably cry...no other movie or TV show had this effect on me. I am bewitched. Need a therapy
Am I the only one who feel more emotional in Ep 3 than Ep 9? The breakage between Vi and Powder, and Powder's plead for Vi to return was an absolute bombshell of a heart break. I avoid watching that scene because it's too much to handle.
Maybe ep 3 is more emotional in first watch, like even taken out of context it still get me emotionally. But for the overall story, i think ep 9 hit harder.
Arcane is great because 1. It's written by people who actually "KNOW" the material, have a passion for it and can see the future of these stories and characters. It wasn't created by someone just doing it for a paycheck from Hollywood... 2. It's NOT live-action and is instead a somewhat new and unique medium that has rarely been seen, especially in the mainstream. 3. It's a completely unique story. Yes, it ties into the lore, but in its own and unique way. We have no expectations, therefore, we can't judge....4. There's an actual story being told. It's not trying to force itself to subvert itself to every single audience member. It doesn't force any campy comedy, it doesn't force any "Girl Power" tropes, it doesn't have anything force-fed to us in any way to "make everyone happy". Which is something every single big blockbuster movie does these days.................... With all that said. The ONLY other time an adaptation was done so perfectly was the 1991 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film... That was the best adaptation ever and nothing has come close to that level of adaptation perfection.
Its a shame other companies don't use their in house talent to work on adaptations of their games and just give the rights to Hollywood and take money from a studio. Blizzard for example could make such great animations in the world of Diablo, Starcraft or Warcraft.
It handle "Diversity" quite excellently. You can clearly see that characters are gay, bi, or whatever but it doesn't feel cringe. They made it feel natural which is what it should've been.
Tbf the entire production doesn't even count as "Hollywood" and I think is partially why is so different and good. European productions just have that experimental and artsy thing going on and if you see Fortiche through the years you can tell they finally stablished their own "style" through the creation of Arcane
Another little detail that folks may have missed; when Silco was telling Powder "We'll show them all," thanks to the surrounding fire, Powder's eye color appears Magenta. That is also the color of Jinx's eyes after her operation. This is pretty good foreshadowing.
I also just love all the tiny details they put into their characters, even the minor characters like Jayce's mom. There's one hugely subtle detail about Viktor's story also that I missed out on during my first time watching, but now I can't help but see each time I watch. I originally didn't even start considering Viktor a "main" character until late in the season (Ep5 or 6 probably? But I also went in not knowing Viktor was a playable LoL character) He appears as early as Ep2, and he's in 3 and 4, but if he never showed up again after that, I wouldn't have really thought anything of it, and Viktor would have just been "that assistant guy". And then upon rewatching Arcane, and coming to realize just how integral being an introvert is to Viktor's character, I realized that he was being introduced to us from his very first appearance, being barely even seen or heard, but being there all the same. Viktor was already being endeared to me without me even fully being aware of it. His lifelong struggles of feeling voiceless and alone are all being shown to us before we even realize he's an important character. The only person Viktor has any extended dialogue with is Jayce, and even during the few times he does speak with another character, it is always with Jayce there with him, and Jayce is really doing most of the talking, or at least saying most of the things that are driving the plot, Viktor's viewpoint rarely being the path that gets chosen. It also makes Viktor and Sky's arc even more tragic, two introverts who struggled with loneliness their entire lives. They both desired people to care for them, and they cared for each other, working side by side for who knows how many years, but Viktor only coming to realize after Sky's death that this whole time he had felt so alone, he hadn't actually been alone, only to truly be without her now. One final note: MAD PROPS to Viktor for being one of the few characters able to make me laugh in the Apocalypse of Tears that is Arcane, with his perfectly timed, perfectly delivered dad joke when he and Jayce got caught by Mel trying to sneak into Heimerdinger's office.
""Love this series. It really showcases human nature's affinity towards conflict. @@xylypotatohead3947 Just re-watched that scene to verify. The only mention of a daughter from Singed was; "Please understand this is for your own sanity **gives Silco a shot in his neck** I too, once had a daughter". That's definitely not the same.
1:24 "What did Arcane do right?" Not outsource the movie to some animators who didn't dedicate thousands of hours to the story they're bringing to life
Literally. Theres a reason this took 6 years to animate, and i think if they hadnt worked with fortiche and given them that much time instead of rushing them to turn over a quick profit, it wouldve flopped.
@@bellac6311 Also, the next seasons are probably already written, and most of the groundwork is finished, which is probably why it will take only 2 years to get S2.
@@bellac6311 This didn't take 6 years to animate. It took 6 years to make from the very beginning of the project to the end. Riot had to create a whole new department to create this show and find all the talents. They had to write their first every TV show. Season 2 won't take 6 years because much of the work is already done and if they do other shows in the league universe they will also be faster.
*deep sigh* it’s not the animators who make the decisions. They simply make things move. It’s usually the script writer and the story artists and the directors who decide how a story is done. Can people please stop misusing “animator” to describe every person who works in animation?
I cried twice over the same part of this video about Arcane; don't even get me started on how Arcane made me feel when I was actually watching the show.
I too expected this to be so bad. "A series based on league of legends? Nooo, its gonna suck so hard. Does the game even have a story, like at all? No thanks..." Thankfully I eventually gave the show a chance. And what a show it was! A real gem!
It does have story but I can understand your concern because League lore has been revised through multiple iteration and even champion lore is kept as vague and generic as possible.
The game has a ton of lore... Lack of a story was never gonna be an issue. Telling the story is where it was likely to suck. WoW has amazing stories but their movie sucked at telling it. Their cinematic are better at telling a story and their books are great.
@@bensemusx The thing is, I wasn't even aware of that until post-Arcane. I´ve played the game on and off for some years and I thought the little champion-descriptions and (quite action-focused and non story driven) cinematics was basically it, since the game itself doesnt really have any story to it.
Dude, my only complaint of this video is the same with Arcane itself. Too short. You gotta do more! Your treatment of Silco could be done for like every character. Subbed in hopes for more of Arcane, but also maybe just whatever you do. This was really top notch leaving me wanting more.
Wow thanks for such positive feedback. I might revisit arcane in the future. But my next video I'm currently working on is related to UA-cam and content creators on the platform
Step 1 is always getting the audience to *care* about the *characters* in my book. Taking The Last Airbender as a failed adaptation example, we're *introduced* to a bunch of characters, but they never have any *defining character moments* that make you go "I like that one! I care about what happens to them!" Then they speedrun through so many *situations* without ever establishing reasons to be concerned with what's happening. I didn't care about Aang because he was trying to save the world, I cared about Aang because I understood who he was and related his struggles to my own.
8:05 I really love that detail you pointed out. It shows you how mel see's the council. I was laughing my ass off the first time I saw it. Cause I immedietly saw the implications of her actions. That also brings my favorite thing about this show is that it doesn't dumb things down. It assumes that you can think and will probably see connections once you saw and re-saw some scenes.
Everything you talked about hit it right on the nail. This wasn't a rush job, this wasn't half assed, this was a labor of love that the people at Riot wanted to see be done right. And because of all the lore that is in LoL, I can see them doing the hole champion roster over time. S2 could very well be more of Vi and Jinx, or they could decide to dive into Naxus or Damacia or anywhere really. Can't wait to see what Arcane has in store for us.
Love how you mentioned the toy Mel give to Hoskel. It's such a small detail that's not focused on at all, and many people ignore it or pass on that detail to focus on the more pression dialogue and plotlines, yet for those who noticed this little detail, it tells so much more story and expands on both Mel's ability to manipulate others and how unintelligent Hoskel was. BTW, very nice analysis overall and editing. The "What Could Have Been" song at the end playing while you explained Silco made me realize the obvious fact that the song wasn't just about Jinx/Vi/Silco (as much as Jinx said Vi was the one who made her, Silco was obviously just as important to her transformation), but also about Silco and Vander. Keep making these videos! You've got a knack for it!
But another dimension to Hoskels character is that he actually respected the capabilities of the Undercity. When someone asked if they were capable of making a weapon out of the gem stone, he knew immediately that they were capable just based on the ingenuity they observed over the years. That shows hes not stupid, hes just not very good at puzzles lol
I really do believe that the best villain's are the ones that are the most human, the ones that make you question whether or not they are right, when they make you question and think that they might actually have a point, they become more believable and interesting as you understand the reasons for why they are the way they are even if you don't agree with their morals or their methods its that question of doubt to the heroes and the villains that makes the conflict more interesting and satisfying.
Silco was an extremely effective Villain. He "lost" (mainly because he didn't really get what he wanted at the end) but his plan was about perfect. I love when a character, especially a villain puts together a well thought out plan which, even after a few hick ups, works.
The "labor of love" line really resonated, and it's so apparent how deeply they love these characters from all the work that went into the smallest details in this season. Just from a story level, all the symmetry and duality they wrote into so many of the characters and the beautiful, painful human arcs that they went through are solid supports for an engaging story; but there are SO many little throw-away details they could have left out which they included to add an extra level of life to the story and make the characters feel real and this world feel lived in. Butterflies and firelights being used as passing symbols of hope, beauty, and progress all the way up till the massacre on the bridge....Powder being fascinated by "a real Valdiani" music box in the workshop in episode 1 and sticking sparklers in one to wake Vi up in episode 9....the scary monsters from Vi's story to Caitlyn actually having been drawn on the walls by Powder in the house where they used to live in the undercity a few episodes before the story. There's a scene in Silco's office when he finds Sevika hanging like a marionette with "LIAR" drawn all over her...Jinx drew "ZZZ" on her eyelid. It's on screen for a quarter of a second, but it made me laugh just a little with the painted mustache and glasses. In a graphic that could have just been kept straight from a horror film, they added just a little lighter shade of gray, and it made me hope for her that there was still any hope that Powder could win in the middle of all this darkness instead of giving up on the character. And the ENTIRE short scene of Viktor running...so brief, and yet it hit like a ton of bricks.
Well, first is: Arcane is one of the best visual experiences I’ve ever seen. Animations, ambientation, COLOURS, character designs, camera/photography work…. Every frame is stunning. Then the characters were written AMAZINGLY well, like Jinx and Viktor
Explain? I guess an anti hero is someone who would would normally be considered a villain goes about and does heroic things for reasons or another not related to his morals.. So an Anti Villain would be someone who does villainous things for reasons related to moral? I'm not entirely sure I know what u mean with anti-villain.

1 of the things I want to bring up as a point of why it succeeded, is because Riot has been working with the animation studio, fortiche for years, at least since Get Jinxed they had built up this trust with what was this small indie animation studio and worked with them for almost a decade before arcane? the studio new what Riot wanted and Riot knew the studio could give them that

And animated shorts you have to read the lore it's so good.
Maybe asking whether League's lore is good in general, or what characteristics a good lore shows? Apparently at some point the people in Riot decided to completely rewrite it in order to put more focus towards the legends everybody played and liked. When I think about good lore, I think about everything being intertwined, there for a reason, and everything in it abiding to the same rules. I like Dark Souls' lore, that's the major medium of storytelling that we get there, so there are a lot of intricacies including interpretations of item descriptions and each area has its own history.

Both are emotional for different reasons i think. I cry at both every time lol
Nah.. you're one of the few sane ones. All these Silco stans are getting pretty sickening tbh.
I cry in episode 3 for Powder. I cry in episode 9 for Silco.
Episode 3 will make you feel harder, while Episode 9 will hit you harder through its revelation of what will actually happen next.
@@yuku6921 it wasnt the focus of the characters despite it being part of them, which is the difference.
@@Pilek01 Yeah. And they have people who know how to make animation. Just look at Overwatch animated shorts!
You starting the video with "Our Love" (the song that played while Vi was going to give herself up) really got me immediately 😭
""Love this series.
It really showcases human nature's affinity towards conflict.
"Nobody wins in war - Vander"

and blows up Singed and his lab; then, when the same bomb hurts
"our people" all of sudden its a tradegy now.

Jinx destroying the council at the end, had me warped with emotions and her accidentally killing mylo, clagger and Vander made me cry
"Is there anything so undoing... as a daughter" - Silco
Wasn't that Singed's line?
@@xylypotatohead3947 Nope, that was Silco talking to Vander's statue in episode 9.
@@demise0 but doesn't Singed say it to him first when he saves Jinx and then Silco repeats it later on? Nevermind you're right Silco says it
@@xylypotatohead3947 Just re-watched that scene to verify. The only mention of a daughter from Singed was; "Please understand this is for your own sanity **gives Silco a shot in his neck** I too, once had a daughter". That's definitely not the same.
1:24 "What did Arcane do right?"
Not outsource the movie to some animators who didn't dedicate thousands of hours to the story they're bringing to life
The animation was outsourced and animators don't write the script.
*deep sigh* it’s not the animators who make the decisions. They simply make things move. It’s usually the script writer and the story artists and the directors who decide how a story is done. Can people please stop misusing “animator” to describe every person who works in animation?
Arcane’s storytelling is powerful.
oh god, the breakdown. the editing. really drove me to the edge of tears. i hope this gets more views!
I cried twice over the same part of this video about Arcane; don't even get me started on how Arcane made me feel when I was actually watching the show.
you made me tear up again, take a like
Glad to hear it, that was part of what i was going for
I too expected this to be so bad.
"A series based on league of legends? Nooo, its gonna suck so hard. Does the game even have a story, like at all? No thanks..."
Thankfully I eventually gave the show a chance.
And what a show it was! A real gem!
the game is the story itself
even the maps ,items design,
even the introduction in 2009 ' clash of fate' from the original creator of DOTA allstar
Quality over quantity anyday bby!! Many creators have forgotten this concept
@@PeyTheWriter the fact this video is only 12 minutes long is a crime. I could watch and hour of your video analysis of Arcane 😊
Fuck. When am I gonna stop crying to this ending man. Dang it.
Got emotional towards the end. Thank you for this wonderful breakdown of an amazing show.
Why u gotta hit us hard with that ending 😭 your way of explaining things and editing are just ✨👌 superb
I cry every single time watching the Ekko x Jinx fight scene. I love this show wtf
8:05 I really love that detail you pointed out. It shows you how mel see's the council. I was laughing my ass off the first time I saw it. Cause I immedietly saw the implications of her actions. That also brings my favorite thing about this show is that it doesn't dumb things down. It assumes that you can think and will probably see connections once you saw and re-saw some scenes.
the animation is so good up to the point where you can easily screenshot any scene and it would look good as a wallpaper
CAUTION: there are onions in this video. T_T
That shows hes not stupid, hes just not very good at puzzles lol
this show is so good, I get chills and tear up from a 12 minute analysis of it.
This was a great video. Your breakdown of Arcane was almost as good as the series itself.
Loved the video man, even if you did acknowledge a dark spot in my memory in the first 2 minutes XD
I didn't even notice Mel do that face to one of the councilmen. Wow.
The parallel between Vander and Silco is probably the best in Arcane
I paused as soon as you said Spoilers ahead watched the whole season and came back. Great video!!
Heck yeah. That's some dedication
@@PeyTheWriter thanks for making me watch it 🤣
This Video is so well edited! Great one! :D
Dude you just played "What Could have Been" and then the credits rolled. Like the Show. I was like, wait that's the end of the video.
Your video is perfect,
Jinx is perfect,
Arcane is perfect.
yo just gotta say editing in final conclusion with that perfect music match was amazing
Holy crap ,you get it. You really truly get it.

That was too short! haha. Really loved this breakdown. Fantastic edit. Thanks guys.
Well, first is: Arcane is one of the best visual experiences I’ve ever seen. Animations, ambientation, COLOURS, character designs, camera/photography work…. Every frame is stunning.
Then the characters were written AMAZINGLY well, like Jinx and Viktor
Good breakdown! I keep watching reviews and reactions to this amazing show. I just hope season 2 can live up to season 1 now!
dude i just want more of everything here... the music the characters the city every single thing
Amazing video. You definitely deserve more recognition than you have.
This video is in and of itself a love letter, and a work of passion.
Thanks for your effort!
Thank you for watching! Glad to hear you enjoyed it
I don't think viewing Silco as an anti-hero is quite right, I think anti-villain is really the best descriptor.
He’s just a straight up villain what??
@@bubbles4897 do you not know that?
Explain? I guess an anti hero is someone who would would normally be considered a villain goes about and does heroic things for reasons or another not related to his morals.. So an Anti Villain would be someone who does villainous things for reasons related to moral? I'm not entirely sure I know what u mean with anti-villain.
@@GedenWilbur you got right.
Ive found myself watching and enjoying alot of videos talking about and explaining the different story beats and plots of arcane, which is very helpful as i completely lost track of the story in act 2 and 3 as i was too busy staring at vi’s arms.
Great Review, concluding with Silco's story is the perfect way to highlight the points made in the first part of the video
U always make the goated contest
1 of the things I want to bring up as a point of why it succeeded, is because Riot has been working with the animation studio, fortiche for years, at least since Get Jinxed they had built up this trust with what was this small indie animation studio and worked with them for almost a decade before arcane? the studio new what Riot wanted and Riot knew the studio could give them that
Absolutely. I agree
Big ups to how you used their music to make your story about their production adaptation story so so great. Dang it the music be making you cry and remember the good story telling (For both parties)
Solid flipin video, this is such a cool way to make a video essay and I love it
Pey Thank you! Because of you I just finished watching Arcane. Please continue your youtube channel. Its a beacon of great Stories worth watching. Grateful
Best and most emotional description of Silco's arc that I've seen yet. Very good video.
Thank you for putting into words what I bet many couldn't. You perfectly portrayed what I loved from the show. Keep up the incredible work
I love this so much, because in a consumerist society that’s obsessed quick bites of easily digestible media & moving on to the next trend. It’s beautiful to see that there are people who genuinely care enough to make something of substance.
I know that doing this isnt easy and doesn’t guarantee praise & acceptance because there are hundreds of quality projects out there that fly under the radar, so why put in the effort?
Because when it’s done right Art like this is born that I don’t even have the words for. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in bringing this to the world! ❤️
My favorite thing about this world is there are people who recognize passion, are inspired from it, and then turn that passion into more passion. Great video, great points, great quality, great edits! The passion is radiant.
this video made me cry at the end. well done
Man, the last part of your review gets me again. Keep up the good work man!

Arcane was a very special show for me and I'm blown away that this video is finding the success it is. I'm excited to continue creating content on this channel. If you have any suggestions or ideas feel free to comment them below.
Saying league of legends lore isn't that great hurt me as a league fan the story is so good it gets better than Arcane even the music and the music videos has story and lore in it like K/DA pentakill True Damage Seraphine Including worlds so much great story telling everywhere including comics on their website.
Please do not forget about Alita Battle Angel. There are some similarities with Arcane. See my Alita videos. #AlitaArmy
Damn, that last part of the video made a grown man cry. The ending of Arcance is perfection. Keep up the good work
That was a beautiful breakdown, i thoroughly enjoyed it and was reminded why i loved this show so damned much, despite never having played LoL.
