  • A Master Automobile Technician reviews the updated 2022 Mazda CX-5 to find out if the recent facelift improved things.
So Should you buy a Mazda CX-5? Mazda has always been an innovative company that made very interesting and good cars. That is until Ford took hold of things and Mazda struggled. But that rough friendship ended and Mazda quickly bounced back to their roots of good engineering and interesting cars.
The Mazda CX-5 has a lot to offer. In this video we will start with some key technical highlights in the engine, transmission and AWD systems.
Then we'll move to the exterior and interior which has always been sleek and sharp. Even better with the facelift in 2022.
We'll take the CX-5 on a test drive to see how quiet it is and how well that 6 speed transmission shifts.
And of course no car is completely perfect, I go over somethings that I didn't particularly like about it.

I own a Mazda 626 Sedan in Prestige Silver Metallic colour, 1990 model (fully imported from Japan) ... bought brand new in Melbourne, Australia as a gift from my father for my 18th birthday. He paid $32,000 Australian dollars for it back then! It's now 32 years old, has done 500,000 kilometres (310,000 miles) and l continue to drive it daily. Has never failed me. Unbelievable car. I cannot part with it. My first and so far, only car ...!! It still looks like new and has always been outside for its entire 32 years, so far.
    People cant believe it!
Six weeks ago, l purchased the 2022 Mazda 3, also fully imported from Japan. I am expected to take delivery of it at the end of July.
I am keeping my 1990 Mazda 626 (the love of my life!) and will never part with it and intend to drive both cars!

Lifelong Toyota fan. Was looking at getting a Camry, but their laziness in getting production/output to the customer made me look elsewhere. So, test drove, fell in love with, and bought a CX-5 last week-but not the turbo. Dealership was very eager to come off the price and add some incentives, So far, very happy with my new car, and the standard options are really high end. The only difference is MPG. I'm getting 25 city and 35 highway, but still too early to tell. But for $6K less than the Camry, I'll be able to pay for for gas for years to come, and break even. Thanks for the review.

I hate having to take my eyes off the road to focus on finding the buttons because you can't feel them. It might as well be messing around with a cell phone, it doesn't feel safe to me. My wife and I bought a 2019 Mazda 3 hatchback. I like the fact it has a 2.5 liter, naturally aspirated motor with a traditional 6 speed automatic. It’s been a great car so far. Nice interior, super quiet and very good handling. A slightly stiff ride is the only negative aspect of it but it’s not punishing. I’ve gotten over 40 mpg on the motorway as well.
The reason the A pillar is so thick is for crash structure. We actually had a 2015 Mazda 3 hatch and a woman yielded incorrectly hitting my wife on the driver side. The car was totaled but my wife was completely fine. It’s a top safety pick plus vehicle and it’s built and assembled in Japan.

I owned a 21 CRV touring edition, top of the line, the road noise was so intrusive at highway speed that you could hardly hear the radio and had to raise your voice to carry on a conversation with the front seat passenger. Luckily with the car shortage I was offered a lot more than I paid and promptly sold it. The cx5 is now on my radar. Great honest review as usual.

Of course you should buy a CX5, it is the best built vehicle on the market. It also is NOT a globally sourced vehicle, it is 95% made by Mazda in Japan. And NO CVT!!! Toyota HAS NOT engineered ANYTHING for Mazda...Right now Mazda's engineering is superior to Toyota. And is why Toyota wants to partner with Mazda. I'm so happy with my CX5 Signature, 3 years later and it still looks and feels brand new. The CX5 has a more driver oriented suspension tune....the bumpy you explain is driving performance. 3 years and I have never had an issue with the A pillars. I came across to your couple of reviews on Mazda CX-5 when I was looking to buy this car recently. Although, your videos are very detailed and helpful, however, I must add here that since I now have this car with me from last 4 weeks, I didn’t face any of the bumpy rides, A pillar, brakes or suspension problems as described in your video. In fact this car drives extremely smooth and very comfortable and I absolutely love it. I have got 2023 2.5 signature version. Not sure where those problems are coming for you from!

I love (now) the infotainment system on my 2020 CX5, though it took a while to get used to. I love the fact that I no longer need to reach forward - against my seat belt a little - to operate the touchscreen. I can remain sat back in my seat while and do what I need to. It does however - take some getting used to navigating it. Very much agree with what you say about the fob. I have found my tail- lift up several times when returning to the car.

Mazda is still one of the few brands right now that prioritizes driving dynamics. The steering feel on Mazdas are great and don't feel soul-less. They also handle really well. You get used to the rotary knob for the infotainment but you are right in that they should have made it a touchscreen when using Android Auto/Apple Carplay. Also looking forward to the future electrified Mazdas that will be powered by Toyota hybrid tech.

That is the best review of a cx 5 that i have ever seen particularly in terms of the detail regarding the engine and transmission. We bought a 2020 CX-9 with the same engine and transmission. Great car and it's turned 30,000 miles. It towed a small enclosed 4x8 trailer just fine. The only issue was going into a 30-40 mph head wind each way and it reduced the rated highway mpg by 10 mpg. I've been doing the oil changes at 5,000 miles with full synthetic and dealer sourced oil filters. Love the way it shifts and low rpm engine torque. It normally averages about 25-26 mpg at highway speeds.

My brothers 2011 Mazda 3 has been amazing and still drives well after almost 200,000 miles. His wife has a 2014 or 2015 Mazda CX-5 and it's also an amazing car, but with a lot less milage. For reliability it seems like Mazda might be right behind Toyota/Lexus. Honda and Acura seem to be having some trouble over the last 6 or 7 years. I've heard bad things about Honda's turbo engines, 9 speed transmissions, and overall build quality. I have a 2010 Honda Accord V6 with over 155,000 miles and it's had zero issues.

Interesting commentary regarding the A pillar. A couple of years back someone driving a CX-5 made a left hand turn in front of me. This was despite them having come to a complete stop and then proceeding. I plowed directly into the front right front (traveling at about 43 mph) of the Mazda. The accident destroyed the front end of the Mazda, and my beloved Honda Accord would seize to exist, at least in the form of a car (complete write off). Anyway, your observation regarding the challenged visibility caused by the A pillar on the CX-5 helps explain what occurred that day.

It's not only about the pillars and the mirrors. Depending on the position you have while seated (the distance from the steering wheel and the height of your seat from the floor), it's a matter of only a few inches which may completely alter the view from inside of your car. I have experienced this in several cars during the past 20 years or so and the reasons behind this phenomenon are at least both safety features and design (including the thickness and curvature/shape of the pillars, even the size/shape/angle of the side windows and the windshield). It's in no way a phenomenon taking place only in a Mazda, it is almost like a standard feature nowadays in most of the cars on the market. I have had cars from the 1960s and sitting on the driver's seat felt like watching the traffic from an aquarium; I have achieved similar sensation during the past decades only in the new generation Honda Fit (Jazz), thanks to the thin A pillars and the additional smaller glass screens in the front corners of the windshield.

I also have a CX-5, which is beautiful, and I love it. The visibility in the CX-5 my only problem with it. I'm a very cautious driver but there have been a few times when I had some near accidents, where I didn't see a car or pedestrian coming due to the thick pillar.
