Unbelievable that none of the other huge car channels here on You Tube never figured out that this is the actual concept of a car review. It is not the snapshot of a scenery drive in a new car with a talking head quoting from the brochure, it is this that has the useful information. This guy should copyright his execution- he really is on to something here. Love it

Every time I see you giving high praise to a non-Toyota car, I get a big smile on my face and a huge sense of satisfaction - not because I don’t like Toyota’s, not because I know that Toyota is not the only company deserving respect, but for the fact that it proves yet again how genuine and honest person you are and you’re staying on the side of the truth vs playing brand loyalty at all costs 🙂

Mazda's attention to detail and their dedication to small updates are unmatched. Even as an owner of 2023 CX-5, I still noticed a lot of small updates they did for the 2024 model when I was at the dealership, for example the indicator/wiper stocks are much better dampened and feels more premium in the 2024 model, the stitchings are better to touch compare to the 2023 model (same trim), the door armrest is softer etc... Most car companies don't care about updating QoL stuff until a full refresh, but Mazda improve stuff constantly. The build quality on these CX-5s are fantastic, not a single rattle even when driving on washboard road and everything feels rock solid, cabin is well insulated, way quieter compare to RAV4, CR-V, Bose sound system is A-tier. For the money you pay for, this is a close to Lexus level car for sure. I love it!

Agree 100%. We got a TSB from our dealer about flashing the transmission with an updated file for improved shifting. We took the car in, had the new file uploaded, and ended up with a better shifting transmission.

    • @user-3tf67bk46u
      @user-3tf67bk46u 20 днів тому +3

@@ChicagoRob2That's interesting to learn about the transmission. I was expecting lots of goodness from the transmission on my test drive. On the particular car I drove, it was one of the reasons I ruled the car out. Its biggest unnatural feel was it was too reluctant to downshift. You had to feed in surprising amount of throttle and then you felt like your fuel economy fell off. And felt surprisingly lethargic. I really was surprised and disappointed. Of all the 2.5s or in that range it seemed the weakest. It was a Base so no turbo. The Nissan Rouge 2.5 was no ball of fire either (the Base 2023 still uses the 4) but its CVT I must say Jatco has that transmission dialed in BEST of any in the class. I'm comparing to most Japanese and both S Korean. Of course we know that these trans are better than before but I still plan to swap the trans fluid at minimum, twice as often as they recommend. It shifts amazing and will do anything you ask of it, either lug down if being gentle on throttle, or, it is very willing to downshift with no drama or weird rpm hunting. It felt the best by far comparing to Subaru in both Forester or Ascent, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, which had weird 6 speeds, (weird at parking lot speeds) but even they felt better than the particular CX5 I tested.
I have a feeling that if that reflash probably would have made the CX5 feel much better.
I expected the CX5 to be quieter but was way quieter than the CRV was.
The other thing I thought I would like about the Mazda but found it was very labour intensive to do almost anything with it, was the rotary knob and dbl switch set-up to change screen. It is ONLY touch screen when using Android Auto or Apple Carplay. I did like tho that Mazda had made the system CD player friendly using either a USB A or Aux plug. Big credit to them for that.
Although the stereo was not great in the Base car. No Bose. But all the cars I drove were Base trims. And the Mazda was the weakest basically. I have heard the Bose system is quite satisfying apparently. CD player should come standard still if they want to stand out further.
I wanted to like the CX5 the most of the lot. So while these review feedbacks are helpful (I especially liked the detail about Nov/93 build dates dropped 2 irritating 'features' on the 2024s) you can't beat test drives back-to-back, and preferably with no salesman beside you. That also spoiled my test drive in the CX5. I was going to take it again on my own but ruled it out due to the particular things that I knew would bug me. Another thing it had that spoiled it a bit was visibility to the right and to the rear if someone is in the front seat. It was surprisingly blind. A lot of these things are all different variables depending on who is driving, their size, how they like the seat adjusted etc etc etc.
Anyway, was another interesting review eh? It reminded me a lot of his first test about a year ago.
Thumb up for button locking on the door handle. Thumb way down on Nissan's super stupid, super loud beep beep beep on rear hatch opening and closing. Huge fail Nissan. I'd prefer a manual hatch anyday to that loudspeaker waking up your whole street.

    • @ChicagoRob2
      @ChicagoRob2 20 днів тому

@@user-3tf67bk46u The transmission in our 2019 CX-5 is excellent, especially after it was reflashed. Downshifting is very positive for every gear. My car is a ‘17 Camry SE and its 6-speed transmission feels lazy, by comparison. My only criticism of the CX-5 is the suspension tuning, which was mentioned in the review. The car does handle better than its competition, but it’s a little too sensitive, to be honest. This is where my Camry takes the lead, since its suspension is virtually flawless. The car is very responsive, but still very smooth. In this regard, Toyota is tops in its class.

Mostly agree, but let's not exaggerate, Mazda repositioned as premium more than a decade ago, in between the Lexus (luxury) and Toyota (upper mass market), it is not that close to Lexus.

Purchased my wife a CX-5 for all of the reason you pointed out in this video. A few observations from my daily use of the vehicle. First off...the button on the door handle is EXCELLENT and I love it. I have a car that has the touch sensor to lock and unlock. If you have the key in your pocket while washing it, it locks and unlocks constantly making it necessary to locate the key away from the car. No issue with that on the Mazda. Ours is a non-turbo and the fuel economy is really good for an SUV. My wife commutes in rush hour stop and go and regularly clocks 27mpg. That is REALLY good for sitting in urban traffic. On long highway drives, we easily get over 30mph. While it's not fast, it has adequate power. You won't win any races, but you won't have any issues getting up to speed in traffic or pulling out on a busy street.
The other gripe I hear a lot about is the multimedia control knob. In 2024, the screen is a touchscreen for Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto if you enable it. But once you get used to using the knob, you won't use the touchscreen anymore. My wife LOVES the controller. Having the controller and volume control right below your hand while your elbow is on the armrest is perfect.
If you like to do your own maintenance (as I do), Mazda has rewarded you again. No need to remove a bunch of screws and fasteners to remove a big lower cover. Mazda has a small access door you can easily remove and the drain plug and filter are right there. So nice!
We're very impressed with the car and plan on keeping it for a long time.

Excellent point. Sometimes when I’m hand washing my other car with the touch sensors on both sides of the door handle, I use the door handles to brace myself while washing with the other hand. Anyway it’s constantly locking/unlocking my doors. LOL. Also sometimes the spray from a wand wash also trips those sensors. I have no problems with the CX5 button.

Once you've experienced what it's like when this touch sensor on the door handles doesn't work, you'll quickly understand why Mazda sticks to buttons....it's the same with the foot swing sensor...to open the tailgate... comedy when you watch a BMW driver when it doesn't work....Mazda doesn't offer this with the CX-5 for a reason.

@@billetherington8849that's the advanced keyless entry system. If you have the fob on you or in your pocket, it should be easy to unlock/lock the vehicle. To unlock, simply put your hand behind the handle and the door will unlock. To lock the door, you have 3 lines at the top end of the handle, just put your finger on top and the door will lock.
As for the one button lock on the cx-5, that makes it easy to get in and or lock the door. After time, of repeated use, the button will wear out and the handle will need to be replaced.

I've owned Mazdas since 1986, and the CX-5 drives like a Mazda. If you've driven Mazdas, you'll know what that means. It's not perfect, but in its class, to me, the driving dynamics are preferable. The CX-5 design is perfect, they really knocked it out the park, whether intentional or not. It's slightly over-built, more premium than it has any right to being, and good value at all trim levels, no nickel and diming.
It's their version of the VW Beetle. Come up with a good design that you'd only ruin by changing, and just continuously update a bit of tech every year keep it relevant. They had been looking at the Honda CRV and Rav 4, but I mentioned the CX-5 was available with a turbo and not-CVT. They picked up a Soul Red fully loaded model today. What timing for this video. Even though the car is getting a little old in its life-cycle, it still feels like a very premium piece of machinery. I read they're also still built in Japan, unlike say, the CX-50. Maybe that means something, I don't know. People seem to be keen on cars built in the Japanese plants.

I'm right handed so doing that is a bit awkward. The computer knows how all the gears line up so you can also with your foot on the brake push the start button with it in gear and it will leave the infotainment on and then you can still easily put it into Park with it off.

Love the interior, simplistic with a look and feel of luxury and quality. The infotainment system isn’t the latest tech but it isn’t gaudy and doesn’t come across like a high tech game board. It also does what you need.

    As a 2020 cx5 owner a few points-
    1. Small-ish range with turbo engine.
    2. Radar cruise detects the vehicles stopped ahead but does not slow down sometimes, only beeps and warns.
    3. Amazing headlights, adaptive lights have very good brightness and coverage.
    4. Mazda NAV doesn't show some areas and updates still miss some new streets and out of city spots. GPS co-ordinates takes only 4 or 5 digits after decimal unlike Garmin which can take 2 or even 4 more digits. Garmin is much more accurate.
    5. Handling and steering are amazing. Turbo engine has good power.
    6. Highway driving. 100 kph just a hair above 2000 rpm. If it had 1 or 2 more gears, cruising would be even more quieter and fuel efficient.
    7. If music is being played loud, you can see bass beats vibration on external rear view mirrors, they need more insulation or damping.

Thank you for a detailed review! I bought a 2024 CX-5 back in Feb this yr and I LOVE it! Base trim only because we don't like the turbo/sunroof/faux leather seats(hot in summer cold in winter) and it has a REAL spare tire! Since the cloth seats only offered at basic trim so we got it. Never knew what GVC was before owning this car. It is great for cornering, acceleration is ok even with base 2.5l 4 banger. Fuel eff is not bad at all with daily around town driving(without traffic jams included) Audio is a bit lacking in bass since the base model has no sub-woofer but that's ok too.
I never expected an "old" car model would give us that many nice surprises. Wish this beauty can stay for long time without being wiped out by fast-changing auto trends. I am old school and really like practical equip for use daily esp they are reliable and owner-friendly. Good job from Mazda!
PS. We were looking to buy a RAV4 but were told even the gas model has a 6-9 month waiting! Hybrid? 12-24 months! PHEV? 36 months up! SXXT! Who has that patience to wait for a daily runner car? So called the Mazda dealer and asked for availability for the same class of vehicle as RAV4..... rest is history.

AMD your reviews of the CX-5 over the past few model years were a large part in convincing me to buy mine (just last week). I got the Carbon Edition w/o the turbo but with the Polymetal Gray paint and red leather interior. Just a STUNNING combo! And the NO I-Stop or cylinder deactivation was/is HUGE bonus (I despise that crap!). Thanks for your great reviews and review style. I watch a lot of other car reviews as well, but yours is always the benchmark… the one I place the most weight on and the one I trust the most. Glad to see you take the time to review the 2024 model as well. Just reaffirms my choice! :). We should all age as gracefully as the CX-5! ;)
One thing I do want to mention that always seems to get missed in the reviews of the recent CX-5s and that I think people would like to know (especially rear seat passengers in a CX-5) is that the rear seats recline. Just lift up on the seat release on top of either seat (that can also be used to lower the back seat) and push back and the seats will recline a few degrees.

Great and thorough review as always. I have a 2024 CX-5 Turbo Premium. The button to open the door doesn't bother me. Actually I prefer it because I can press the button once to open the driver's side and twice to open all the doors. The passenger has a button on their side as well and can open all the doors. Works great. I have even heard that other cars that have the touch sensor on the handle sometimes have problems with the sensitivity and don't always work perfectly. No problem with the button. Works every time. My last car that I traded was a 2006 Honda Odyssey EXL with 240,000 miles so the features that this SUV has is a huge upgrade no matter what. I am so happy that my car doesn't have the i-Stop, cylinder deactivation or CVT transmission. To my knowledge only the normally aspirated trims had the i-stop and cylinder deactivation before November 2023. The turbo trims never had it. A big reason I chose this car is the old school features and build quality that you mentioned. Mazda has spent several years fine tuning this model CX-5 and I am happy that I waited until 2024 to buy one. It has some new features like the wireless Android Auto/Apple Car Play and updated seats, suspension and sound deadening materials. Solid, quiet, luxurious, quick, fun to drive, great to look at inside and out. Hard not to love this car once you own one.

Amazing how few exterior cosmetic changes Mazda has made with this model since 2020. I see this as a good thing. Their focus is on improving substantive aspects. Also, the cylinder deactivation on the older models is refined and subtle. You hear the cylinders kick in as you release the break from a stop, but it's barely noticeable.

I had a 2019 CX-5 and my main concern with it was the block cracking (common more so on the 2018 with the first iteration of the cylinder deactivation). I also worried about the cylinder deactivation causing a potential issue. I sold it for a Toyota. If I didn’t have the cylinder deactivation on it, I would likely still have it. The driving feel of the Mazda is like no other in this price range. The interior is premium, the ride is smooth, yet sporty (for a crossover), and it was a tank in Michigan winters. Overall, seeing that the cylinder deactivation is gone… that’s appealing to get another one in the future!
