The magic of lighting!
colour grading tutorial? thanks
Kellan Reck hi kellan amazing and very helpful how would you like to be a guest on my weekly Talk show that Aires on Facebook and UA-cam at the same time it is a guitar related show but most of my listeners are content creators and would be very interested in hearing from you about setting yourself up as a content creator
Yea
Faboya James creativity is what’s its all about making something out of nothing
Thank you so much! Amazing video tutorial!
Everyone should be forced to watch this before any Zoom meeting takes place! Great info, thanks
Thanks man!
Dig this! Totally agree. Newbie here. A few tweaks go a long way. Recently viewed key board littered with coffee stains, dirty bits on the floors
This kind of setup would blow my coworkers away during our zoom meetings lol
ive been held hostage FORCED TO WATCH THIS heeelp 😜
My boss has audio only Zoom meetings lol :P
Kellan, if you ever read this, let me apologize in advance for this comment being so long, BUT I must say that I've watched literally dozens upon dozens of these "UA-cam studio set-up" type videos for YEARS and YEARS and have NEVER come across one that is as simple and to-the-point as yours. And by "simple and to-the-point" I mean you helped me FINALLY understand camera settings and why, when and how to use them by explaining the settings in a "real World" example and not just by using "professional tech talk" that means absolutely NOTHING to a beginner or someone inexperienced with DSLRs or cameras with semi-pro to pro bells and whistles. Believe me when I say, I've been watching UA-cam videos for over 10 years trying to understand how people were getting that "look" for their UA-cam videos. I got to the point where I was so sick and tired of hearing people explain three-point-lighting, key light, hair light, fill light, etc, etc. I even purchased a very expensive lighting kit years ago only to regret it because my videos still looked green as freak. Then I watched video after video after video of the "pros" explaining aperture, ISO, shutter speed, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...but no one was putting it all together in a "follow along, real World example" like you just did. AND YOU DID IT WITH A SINGLE LIGHT, AND IT WAS DARK OUTSIDE, from what I could see though your windows. I was also frustrated with videos titled "how to make your UA-cam videos look professional" and the video would go on and on talking about what camera, what lens, what lighting, etc., etc., and all I could think was "dude, forget all this techy mumbo jumbo, just show me exactly how YOU got your video to look the way it is RIGHT NOW!" It took your video, Kellan, to get me to finally understand how it all works, and you did it without OVERCOMPLICATING everything. As I watched, I grabbed my Samsung S20 Ultra because its native camera app has what they call "Pro Camera" and "Pro Video" modes which allow you to manually adjust some basic aperture, ISO, white balance, etc., settings. As you were talking, I was following along and adjusting the settings on my phone's camera and VOILA...it all came together for me in that instant! After all these freaking years, I finally know EXACTLY how to work with manual settings of cameras and from now on will know what I'm supposed to do with them. I'm more of a visual learner and sometimes I learn "backwards." I'm more of a "show me the when, why and how of something and teach me the terminology later" type of learner. Once again bro, thank you so much for this video. You have no idea what this videos means to me. I know others have given you compliments and praise for this video, but as far as I'm concerned, you could have charged top dollar for this one. Thanks again Kellan. PEACE!
Thank you so much for this comment. Really happy I was able to help! Go crush it!!
This shows how important the light is in video to have a quality video.
Thank you for this!! I love how you piece by piece show what each tip does visually. Honestly the best video on the subject I’ve watched.
One of the best 10 min videos I have ever seen. This is gold. Keep it up.
Wow, thanks!
I've been sitting in my office trying to figure out how to configure the space and your video popped up. NOW I KNOW!
Perfect timing for it!
Just just found you and I'm really glad. This was a wonderful example of how simple it really is to change the look of a space with simple lighting techniques. You really break it down in an easily consumable format. I love the before and after snap cuts. Thank you for your videos. Subbed!
Honestly one of the most helpfull videos I've seen. Straight to the point and with cheap items. Most of the videos I see claim to be "affordable" yet they feature gifted or expensive equipment. Thank you!
Really good content! I love how you're always comparing the before and after.
I think this is exactly what I need to level up my videos a bit!
I’ve been thinking about reinventing my filming set up and this was the perfect inspiration to do it! Thank you so much for the tips and suggestions! :)
You are so welcome!
This Video Came as Finding Another Earth Amidst The Dark Empty Space, The Best Content on This Subject. Thank you.
Dude. I've been looking for something like this! So good - concise, clear, before & after, the reasons, prices - you're awesome. Subbed. Thank you!
Wow, this is one of the most useful videos I've seen on making your home look way more professional on UA-cam. The key difference was the before & after comparisons at each step. Most people just tell you what settings you need and you can't remember why as you have no context. Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, step-by-step and to the point without 5 minutes of fluff up front! I do lots of photography and a small amount of videography and streaming, and the video can help in each of those areas. Video color correction is an area in which I need to work; thank you for the motivation to do so.
Thanks Kellan, that was a really awesome walk through. I like how you actually showed the whole room, and that it really was just a basic bedroom. Doesn't take much to up the quality. Cheers Simon
love the comparing shots! it makes so much easier to see and understand how small changes can have a huge impact!
Enjoyed the Simplicity of this Budget Set up and the Camera Tips - So much value from this one video - Excellent Work - Thanks
Awesome, thank you!
low-key can't believe this guy gets this amount of views. I saw the quality of his videos and immediately thought he was a top-tier youtuber. He deserves so many more views than he gets, one of the most informative videos I've ever watched
Really appreciate this! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I think there are sound quality issues.
Same here. I don't even understand why he only has 44k subs when he obviously deserves more than that. I watched his video about ISO and stuff and no one explained it better than him.
I agree, the video was great!!!
Dude this video was spot on. Great info that ads value. No fluff that needs tons of money. Awesome.
SUPER helpful video - thanks so much for pulling together. You make what seems an expensive and unobtainable setup actually very very achievable . I learnt that you just need to understand your camera settings better, and spend a little money on simple but effective gear. This has been great - thank you!
This was super useful! I think after applying these tips, I'll feel much more confident when I go to record. I really appreciate it. This was concise- and I loved the comparison shots. Thank you again!!
You got this!
This is crazy informative and well-produced. Thank you, it's definitely got actionable tips and the links make everything easy to find!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for taking the time to put this together... Much appreciated! ❤️❤️❤️
I appreciate that you mentioned the camera settings. something I haven't seen in other videos. Thank you!
Just randomly found this video and it turned out it was the video I didn't know I needed - literally learned sooo much in 10 minutes 🙌🏼
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
Zitha Nim I agree
Seriously, this video is so helpful, specially for beginners like me. 😃🤟
Sweet video, straight to the point. Thank you very much.
Wow, an extremely well made video, with all the explanations and samples. Most descriptive and easy to understand what lights can do for you.
Small Details and Camera settings that you give are worth thousands (many others explain the settings very brief, you take the time) Thanks bro!. Sometimes the most common details for some experts can be the biggest change for someone starting who still has a million questions lol ! You got a new Sub!
That snap intro set the hook, the lav mic comparison kept me watching. And I already have all my gear 😂😂 nice job
I can't remember the last time I've watched a video without checking how much time was left - super helpful information and very engaging thank you!!!
That's so nice. Thanks!
@@KellanReck Me too. This is the beauty in being natural and honest :).
this video was seriously the most helpful, attainable and encouraging video i've seen here while researching this all day. thank you so so much!!
Perhaps the best video on the subject on YT. Thanks man
Got Damn great video. No lame jokes , straight to the point & my melanin will look great in my new videos thanks 💯⚜️
This video is actually underrated. Wow... It's full of insightful information. I wish I can subscribe more than once. Nice one....I'm a UA-camr but my production isn't as standard yet but this video will definitely help.
Thanks so much!
Appreciate the hard work you put into this. Great Video
Dude! I've been watching these kid of videos for over a year now. Must admit this is the best and most useful video so far on my UA-cam journey! Well done and thank you for this! Subscribed without a doubt you deserve it 👌👊
Yo, I'm a highschool teacher getting my stuff together to make youtube videos for my classroom and this video is straight fire!! Subscribed with a bell! Love the tips for someone on a budget that wants top-notch quality! I'm shooting on a 5dMkIII. I have a 50 1.2 and a 24-70 2.8. Ill use the zoom lens for a while, but I am looking to get a prime lens for the wide shots. I love the look of the 28mm you recommend! Best 10mins spent on the internet in a long time.
Thanks so much! Good luck with everything!
Justin Rigdon what was the answer to #2 on the test?
5:27 The way he moved his head while saying "in the seat" killed me.
Joking aside, loved the video!
Wow, one of the nicest tutorials Ive watched in so long! 💯
Thanks for the super simple and practical tips for making huge differences to the video recording session!
Great video! Thanks!
Underrated.
Hands down the best video! easy, straight forward. appreciate camera settings info too. thank you
Appreciate the info. Finally a vid that breaks it down in layman terms & doesn't over complicate things
What a fantastic video, man! Great job! I was curious however did you by chance figure out what the buzzing audio in the background was? Was it from the light or maybe a connection problem with the lapel mic ?
It seemed to go in and out, but I was wondering if anyone mentioned it or if you had any advice on what to look out for in that regards? Either way, amazing video, really addictive to watch! I only started watching 30 seconds and got immediately sucked in! Had to watch the whole thing! Thank you so much for the great advice/recommendations! It’s going to be so fun to set something up like this :-) you’re the best thank you
The buzzing was an issue with my audio recorder that I noticed afterward :/ Not much I could do about it. Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm going to give all of this a try on my days off this week. I really appreciate this.
Ive been delaying starting a channel just because I can't find a way to make the aesthetics match everyone else's.. even after watching many videos that teach this.. only yours made it muuuuch simpler and doable .. thank u sooo much!
Very helpful man! Shot for the ideas
Thank you! Best of luck.
I’m definitely going to pick up a couple of mics. I thought they would be more expensive than that. Good basic concepts, lighting, paying more attention to the background, color grading... from there I need to get creative with defining my style and away I go! Thank you!!! 😃👍🎥
You've got this! It doesn't take much. Obviously mics can become quite expensive, but you can do a lot with a cheap setup. Just a little bit of money can go a VERY long way.
this was a great video to get the basic studio going. thank you for sharing
One the best videos I’ve seen to help people!
Clear, focused, and useful.
Of course the camera and lens are the priciest elements of your setup. But a bad camera with good light and audio, is almost always better than a good camera with poor light and audio.
Just a random viewer strolling around UA-cam and my expectation was just to see another UA-cam video of the creator going BLA BLA BLA about the information. But one thing I haven’t seen on other videos that you did... COMPARE THE ORIGINAL SHOT!!!! Sorry. I’m just really big about those side by side comparisons. Beautiful. Very helpful and thank you
Thanks so much!
Lighting and camera setting tips are on point however if you’re on a budget I recommend building acoustic panels instead as they have better performance and look nicer. 1-2 inch foam does nothing for sound dampening unless you have hundreds of them
This is one of the best video for a entry level setup
THANK YOU for throwing in the camera settings, that is very helpful!
Followed these steps and got amazing results! Camera got real clear, then realized, you have to actually look good and not have acne. Dang it
I'm sure it looks great!
tweak your diet that acne will clear up brotha
What Venerando C said. Also, it is what it is. Just do it! I checked your channel and your handsome so don't worry about it! Start recording!
solid content
Thanks!
great video mate, i really liked how you went really cheap and still made a great change in the production quality!
Awesome video man, I knew most of these things before but I appreciate the way you explained it, feels like I understand it better know
The info which makes the difference and nobody tells

Thanks so much for this realistic approach to a budget friendly UA-cam setup really helps us beginners out a lot!
Overall, this is called production design, according to Hollywood term
Man, this video was really awesome. I believe, it'd be helpful for most audience out there.

Sorry dude, I couldn't watch some of previous videos, I'm in very tight schedule.
Thank you, Gaurav! Don't be sorry. Glad you saw this one!
Thank you so much for this video! I just started planning to start UA-cam and this is exactly what I needed! Again, THANK YOU!
Awesome video man, really, really awesome! The way that you’re constructed true all the video em showing the changes while talking about setups. Perfect, 0 defects.
Thanks a ton!
Man you are so handsome! Wow!
Step One: Own a 2500$ camera plus a 400$ lens. 😂
Exactly.
Knew it was too good to be true😂😂
The key is actually lighting. You can get a good look with a webcam and proper lighting. If you have a dSLR it's easier to get the bokeh affect, but that's all that the camera gives you.
There's a video of him shooting with his iPhone and it looks AWESOME. There's also another video of Nigel Barros shooting with an older iPhone 6 and it looks amazing! Lighting can dramatically change the way things look and you don't really need an expensive mic especially if you're just starting and want to get your feet wet!
Just buy lumix gx85, its almost as good as gh4, gh5, and its only 400 usd with the kit lens
I appreciate you showing whole setup from different angel that’s really helps. In my videos I’m trying to setup similar as I have small space too.
FANTASTIC VIDEO for a beginner like me!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
What wattage lamp do you use ??
Ahh my key light was set too high! I lowered it to face level. It’s just so bright & my webcam doesn’t have an ISO setting... so I ordered a Sony A6100.
Awesome! Hope it goes well.
Shouldn't your webcam fix the ISO automatically, even when you don't have the setting? All Logitech webcams I know of do this. Maybe put a sheet in front of your light (if it's not the kind of light that heats up)? But well, if you can afford a nice camera, it's all good. You may want a capture card if you want to connect it on your computer like you did with your webcam (e.g. for streaming).
Cédric Olmanst sadly it’s a cheap $40 knockoff webcam. Logitech cams are all sold out.
Makes sense then, I guess :)
This is gold! Exactly what I needed, thank you!
Finally a well made video about this! Amazing job!
Manny thanx, Especially useful to folks born before 1970, HAHAhaha
Haha you got it!
Heck, I was born in 1978 and this video was extremely helpful to me as well LOL.

Thanks so much for tuning in! :)
So, you literally use a $2800 gear and call it “studio for $100”. Well done
Just put out a new video on cheaper camera alternatives
I'm starting with an I-phone so true.
All this would make any video you shoot, with any camera, look and sound better. Even if you shoot with your phone.
Just so you know, gear and a studio are two separate devices.
The panels alone were over $100😂😂😂😂
It explains so much! So glad I stumbled over it - thank you!
great suggestions, love the back light, it's warm and inviting. Thanks Kellan :)
It’s pronounced “Lahv” not lav, but I can see where that would be confusing
And 50th of a second, not one over fifty.
This is gold as I’m looking to also set my corner set up to start. I’m over thinking it and this helped
This was an awesome video, thank you so much for posting it!
Extra mile on this video for sure great quality , affordable Price , straight to the point,an great information on for settings on your cam what to set
This is one of the best videos I've seen. Thanks a lot Kellan. You really do make it easy for beginners.
You're very welcome!
I'm so glad this was the first video that came up when I searched "Building a UA-cam Studio". Very informative and useful. Thank you so much.
Man I really needed this. Thank you so much. It really helps,
I've watched about 10 tutorial videos before this one and I've got to say this stands out, quality video and really good tips thank you.
THanks so much!
I am just starting out as a UA-camr so this was super helpful! Thanks a lot Kellan 😀
Thanks for a good, basic video on home studio lighting.
There's so much value in this video. Subbed.
Solid vid!! Seen a bunch of these and this was one of my faves!! Thx!!❤❤
This is a great tutorial!
I am so keen to give this a red hot go!
Great explanation. A lot of other videos talk about lighting and such, but often skip out on how the camera settings need to adjust. Great breakdown!
Love your video so much.
It way easier to understand than any other video on UA-cam I ever watch.
Hope for more video from you.
Thanks so much! More to come
Thank you for the camera settings. I wondered but had no idea what it should.
