Best lighting tutorial ever. Straight to the subject matter. Broke it down into three key points and made it step by step, clear, and concise. No extra rambling and even gave a bonus lighting shot. Great information.
I’m getting professional lighting education from a free, 6 minute UA-cam video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us beginners. It means everything 🙏🏼
Starting with a “blank canvas” is a must. Same rules apply when doing photography with strobes. Get your ambient shot, then add one light, your second light, etc

Now, 5 Months later, right after ordering some new lights I want to thank you again. I moved into a new apartment and set up my home office with this in mind. Although I only had some basic lights I made stunning improvements. I chose the darkest room and build up the lights step by step. it just looks awesome and I love not to blur my background in my meetings. I hear "wow" your office looks amazing" quite a few times per week and I feel super good about that. I am planning to launch even a YT channel now since everything looks better now. So, thanks again, mate!
I have struggled with lighting for YEARS. This is literally the only video that has ever helped me understand how to set up a lighting scene. So much appreciation for this video. Thank you!
Thank you! The changes from before and after are so drastic! Usually I'd be researching so many videos in order to get things right. But this is literally the only one I need. Everything is explained, and amazingly in such a SHORT video. Thank you again!
This is SUCH a great tutorial. I've seen a whole bunch now, but the fact that you did this in just 6 minutes is super impressive. I really appreciate it!

this is the single video that made the biggest difference in my youtube videos...i struggled for months to get my video look right, too much background spillage and most videos showed the key light to face you vs. doing it your way keeps the background dark which was the effect i was going for. Simple changed by a game changer for the look of my videos. Helped me not obsess over needing to buy a more expensive background and need to film in an expensive studio
I have so many different lights, but still unsure how to use them correctly 🤣 So happy I came across this video, I cannot wait to try all of this. Definitely subbed, nothin but love!!!! 💚
I know this video is old and you probably won’t see this, but this video has helped so much. I started tik tok in February, and grew to 700k followers, watched this in the beginning, coming back now that I have all the gear necessary and so excited to attempt this type of shot. THANK YOU
At this point I've probably watched hours of lighting videos and this one explains it better than them all combined in just 6 minutes and a really pleasant viewing experience 😍
I've implemented all of these lighting techniques recently. Doing this (along with switching from a 4k camcorder that gives NO separation - i.e. bokeh - to a Sony a7s ii with a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8) has made my videos go from looking homemade to professional! Investing in good audio is a must as well! Just now starting to see the fruits of my labor (and A/V investment).
Man I really appreciate this. I've never seen all of this explained so quickly and simply. I am not a youtuber and may or may not ever be in the future, but as an artist just now getting into digital art, I can see where this immediately applies to that as well.
I’ve binged watched a lot of your tutorials and I will say, I’ve seen a lot of tldr videos about lighting and yours is straight to the point, concise, just what I was looking for. I’ve been shooting since 2017 but to be honest I haven’t gotten down to the nitty gritty of lighting basics so I’m grateful for your content. A lot of people including myself want to get down and dirty but never go back to basics or take the time to learn them because we’re all so used to getting things fast. Thank you.
I took a whole semester of lighting and still couldn't figure it out, until I watched this 5 min video. Crazy how a good teacher can really change things.
I dunno why it warms my heart to see a guy like you with such a sweet and sincere smile!! It brightens my day lol. I literally only clicked because of your smile (and great lighting so we could see that great smile 😉) 🥰 Have a lovely day! Edit: It appears you make great content! I subscribed! Looking forward to more.
Straight to point. No unnecesary filler words etc. This video has made me understand all the features I thought were unnecessary. Consequently, I am now going all in to get my lights. Thank!
It's hard to believe you are not in the 1 million range. But that just made me more excited to follow you because I can keep up with your content from zero. That will be more relatable! Until you hit that 1 million range (let's be real, you will get to that!)

Sweet beans! This is like magic, just by moving my light a bit lower and and bit more behind me I feel like my camera just became 3x better too. Thanks!
I once bought an online lighting course for 1 month. You somehow managed to put everything that I learned in that 1 month to a 6 minute video. Amazing! Keep it up!
Sitting here always using one elgato keylight and I thought it would be enough. Now it is enough! It's time to reorganize my stuff, background and light it up. Thank you so much!

I had to stop and comment for you and you probably won't see this because you have 9,000 comments. You are the best by far explaining lighting. You go step by step from darkness you write it out on the screen and you explain what it does and how to achieve it. I have a job that allows me to watch videos all day I'd save them in folders so that I can come back to them and go over and understand. Check out my link for “alternate key light” to find a great budget friendly option of $30 - I also plan on creating a version of this soon where we do all budget friendly options of under $100
What i like to do with my fill light is to put it kind of far from the subject, with a more yellowish colour than the key light. This helps with making the footage more natural and in fact more happy. This is because the light is acting like a window, and it looks like it's sunny otside (wich is a happyish weather i guess)
Thanks I appreciate that! Yes, I plan on doing another lighting video in the future that covers a less "RGB Look" and a more "natural look" so stay tuned!

That’s a cool use of color, alternately you could look into color grading: ua-cam.com/video/cljkygq8GKE/v-deo.html
Aaand I'm subbed... this explained in just over 5 minutes, exactly what I needed to know!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to the creative crew!
Probably the simplest and most effective lighting tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks dude
I've struck 🥇 gold!

Thanks for watching AA!
Hello from Russia, Ben! Thanks for the video. This was interestingю I will try to follow your advices
Thanks for watching and hope it works well for you!
That was great. The initial also looked good too, just a different feel.
Thanks I appreciate that! Yes, I plan on doing another lighting video in the future that covers a less "RGB Look" and a more "natural look" so stay tuned!
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks. I appreciate your help as I learning to make videos too.
