Finally found what i was looking for,!! as a white belt i´m always struggling trying to retain my guard with strong and no strong opponents and thats what i´ve been focusing on this last months and im actually improving, but this is GOOOLLDDD!! Thank you Jon!
Attend Jon’s seminar yesterday. Outstanding instruction very basic key concepts that will elevate anyones game. Thanks for making the trip Jon please travel safe.
So far my guard has been pretty good as it's my main focus at this level. Personally trying to build an excellent defense. And once I have that my ill start to work on being more offensive. This was very good information
3 stripe white belt here. Love your content. Your focus on conceptual understanding really drives this stuff home. I get smashed all day by dudes in my gym but bit by bit and with your help, I’m getting a little harder to smash. Baby steps. Thanks man
Do you have any videos on countering or stoping "floating " type of passes( leg pummeling) when you play butterfly or any advice? I have been struggling with people that pass my butterfly in this manner
Not exactly sure what type of pass you're asking about, but a good general principle is immediately break the grips your opponent gets. Especially if these grips are on your legs when you're playing butterfly. Having your legs controlled and shutting down your hooks is what kills a butterfly guard. So as soon as they grab your pants, break that grip. Or divert their hand before it even gets to your pant leg and turn it into your own grip. If they're bodylock passing, shooting for underhooks as soon as they go for the bodylock. that way you will still have some control and can try to elevate/create some distance. If they get a full bodylock and you have no underhooks its gonna be rough to maintain guard. Hopefully this helps a little
So in the first concept with always keeping one shoulder off the ground, doesn’t this contradict utilizing the far side elbow to post on the ground when your opponent is trying to turn your hips? I personally use my elbow to dig into the mat to creat a structure so my opponent can’t turn my hips away. Is this something that is just based on certain situations? Thanks
Great question! Actually it doesn’t it’s seems like it should but you are absolutely capable of having that shoulder blade off mat while at the same time hitting floor with your elbow. Also when you already turned in a bit the elbow on floor won’t matter as much because you have already turned in, in the cases where you get flattened or turned away a little it will matter a little more to help you in the fight to get turned back in.
A lot of people haven’t seen the original content and it gets buried in algorithm so I do repeat videos often , but I’m always updating my positions too so I usually am adding in a lot of corrections if I revisit a position.
Exactly what I need as a beginner. Really struggling getting my guard immediately passed. Will try these tips out
Hope it helps buddy! Retention is frustrating but makes a huge difference when you get it and jiu jitsu becomes way more fun.
Heck, I need this as a brown belt! Thanks Jon. Now I need to do more crunches.
Me, too. I hate people flanking my open guard…. Happens almost every time I roll, and I know there must be a better way…
You have the gift of teaching, not all instructors have it, great job.
Man now im pissed no one told me this early. Thank you so much this is a life saver.
Killer video… the more concise the video, the better the knowledge of the creator.

Happy to hear it buddy
Was curious to see the keymaster from the thumbnail
This is very interesting, it looks like you'd be able to use your feet and hips this way to really frustrate the bullfighter pass
Yeah proper angling makes everything else so much easier!
대박...I want to watch a video of Nogi
Thank you for this video. I probably should’ve already known this as a 4 stripe purple belt haha
good stuff! :) nice one jon!
Thanks a lot buddy!
Love it!!
Thanks a lot!
Great video! I can’t wait to try “flicking my hips” tonight and putting my feet on the biceps to retain my guard better. Many thanks 🙌
He feet on bicep or wrist makes a massive difference if you aren’t doing it already so hope it helps!
I just realized I've been doing every single one of these tips subconsciously. So now I still wonder why I have trouble in the guard.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
The devil lies in the details Thank You from Brazil OSS!!!
