I did Winnatts about 6 years ago on a hybrid by 'accident'. No idea what I was letting myself in for. Stopped/fell off about 4 times, could barely get going again. As I finally got to the top an old couple had watched the last part of my climb and gave me a round of applause. 🤣 I've not been up since!
that guy looks so huge! a true giant! So fun to see such a challenge. To be fair to him - 20% gradient is hard no matter your weight. He did a great job.
Cheers! You guys have been doing some really good pieces lately! When Hank was encouraging Jamie it reminded me of a long climb my son did with me for the first time. The banter up the hill was spot-on!
I will watch ANY challenge with these two in it. They are so entertaining! And well done to Jamie for surviving (quite literally) that climb! More Hank and Jamie content, please, GCN!😄👍👍
Having done Winnats myself back in 2017, and fell off probably in the exact same spot lol all i can do is say a massive congrats to Jamie, brilliant effort. Great video, if i`d have been riding next to Jamie like Hank and he said i was going to die when we got to the top, I would have turned round and went back down Hahahaha
Valiant effort. It’s encouraging to see people attempt challenging things. And it is very humble of Jamie to attempt an unknown climb on camera. Well done.
Thank you Hank and Jamie, excellent video and good to see Jamie putting in some effort 😊. These videos are a great idea displaying that it’s not that easy tearing up a climb. More Jamie and Hank please.
Great video. Like a few others. I was once a 270 lbs fat weight lifter, fat because I had plenty of that on my waist. I presently weigh around 168. I wasn’t riding then, but can appreciate how important weight to power ratio is when climbing now. At 62 years old now, I watch my weight knowing all the hills around me will never get easier. I have enjoyed all the videos with Jaime- thank you.
That's a modified cannondale topstone 3. Stock it weights about 11kg with a permitted total weight of 150kg. It's one of the more sturdy bikes out there. He also got some changes - carbon wheels and grx instead of the stock sora... I think the piece most likely to break are the wheels... He maybe should go for mountainbike rims with a few more sprockets...
To be fair it looks like he is already riding a gravel bike with GRX 2x gearing that goes pretty low. Some hacks to get lower gears but much beyond that it’s mountain bike gearing time
Great video! Jamie way to go! Always nice to see someone from another discipline step out of their comfort zone and attempt something that is so foreign and so difficult for them. Shows true humility! Congratulations!
Well... he paid for it 😂 I guess his weight training includes many bpm peaks... so, since you get better at what you train, he might have his cardiovascular system tweaked to high bpm a bit 🤷♂️

Thoroughly enjoy this video. Great sport Jamie and awesome interview Hank. I know Jamie would be able to do it, even if it took a while, but the effort was more brutal than I expected. So chapeu big guy 💪
If you lift weights in the low rep ranges you can get damn strong without packing as much muscle. Until you plateau ofc, but that is fine for this purpose.
Only up to a point. A good example here is seeing Magnus Midtbo who is a climber (of rock rather than roads) and does comparisons on his channel with body builders etc. And he climbs significantly better than them and, in most of the strength tests that are relevant for climbing (especially finger strength) he just blows them out the water. Now, of course they all talk about the weight advantage - but he did other videos where he added a load of dead weight to his body and still climbed better than them - and their excess weight isn't dead weight it's muscle. Truth is he climbs better because he has better technique and specific strength that suits the task compared with people who just lift heavy objects repeatedly. Yes, not having excess weight helps, but not to the degree many think, i.e he can add weights and still climb better. Pogcar on a heavier bike wearing a backpack with weights in it is still going to fly up the hill. In cycling, of course, all your upper body is dead weight more or less, but a lot of emaciated and weak amataeur cyclists seem to imagine they would climb better than Chris Hoy or Mark Cavendish - not the least when they see Mark riding at the back of TdF stages. They seem to think Mark climbs like their gran because he's a sprinter - that the hours he loses in the overall GC are an actual reflection of how close the performance of him and the GC guys is - and some of them, standing on the scales at 68kg think they're closer to Pogcar or Chris Froome than Cavendish is! In reality he'd drop them trivially. He can't climb as well as a handful of the world's most elite climbers (and so he doesn't bother trying - he saves his energy for the stages he can win) but that doesn't mean he's bad at climbing. There's really no point at all being skinny and cycling in the UK. It's not improving your performance and, in most cases is making it worse. We don't have any mountains just a few hills. Of course being 130kg probably wouldn't help, but the guy did 350w. He probably could have gotten up better with better gearing on the bike and a bit more experience about what gear to use, cadence to use, power to sit at etc - and 20% gradients rarely make any sense - you know the big cycle races go up mountains and the roads zig zag up the mountain at more sane gradients - when you have a mountain to climb you get clever about how to build the road. In the UK we don't have mountains so we just stupidly go up and over creating some short but very steep stuff - but it's not really about climbing - climbing is about going up a mountain, it's the longer duration, the lack of oxygen etc. A steep hill that is so steep you end up standing up and stomping a slow cadence? That's not even cycling at that point. The other guy wasn't spinning and flying up either was he? There's little or no reason to be doing 500+ watts in the middle of an extended effort is there? Most cyclists are not riding up climbs at 350w however much they weigh so you can see how with a bit more experience he'd beat many cyclists even with 50-60kg excess weight compared with them.
@@irfuel If that's a book to you then you should probably avoid reading and most things. Please don't vote. It's a plus that you know your limitations.
Awesome effort. I’m also 130kg and appreciate how hard the climbs are. You did better at that hill climb than ANY cyclist would do in the gym with you 👌
Jamie is 39 yo, so the standard predictor (very flawed I know) would have his MHR at 181. The standard deviation of that model is 13, so even at 2 standard deviations away from the mean (occurs in just 2.5% of the population), Jamie is clearly putting in pretty much a maximal effort. 130 kg at steep gradients is no joke and you can tell from his cadence that he couldn’t really go any slower to pace himself. Lower gearing might have helped. When you are already doing a maximal effort at a cadence of 40 rpm, and the gradient just gets steeper, there is nowhere to go but sideways.
Congrats to Jamie getting up that climb. You could just feel his pain, but he made it. He is so comfortable and natural on camera that I'd love to see him back on GCN. If going up Alpes d'huez, get him some easier gearing as others have suggested
All credit to anyone who takes on a climb like that and gets up, but, an hour and a half? Seriously? He (or she) MUST have stopped for a kip and/or a coffee halfway up .... mustn't he? On another note, full credit to Jamie too - clearly a guy who can laugh at himself. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him on GCN in the future.
I loved climbing before I became a fully grown adult at 95kg..... then it became the struggle to make it to the top, so you could then enjoy the decent and having no fear of getting pushed around by the wind. you are planted to the ground. Jamie shows such inner strength by completing these challenges outside of his comfort zone. Never stop pushing through these challenges
208 bpm...... I am the same age as him (but a lot less fit) but even when I do VO2max efforts i am peaking at around 175 to 180 bpm. I cannot imagine 208bpm. The man is a beast.
208 bpm that cannot be, especially that guy is probably 30 and over. These are absolutely elite numbers. My bet is bad reading from the out of the saddle riding Edit: He is 39
@GiJoe94 they are not elite numbers. They are elite numbers. If you can keep it close to 200 bpm for 20 minutes or more like some cyclist can !!!This is just his maximum heartbeat , it is personal and tells nothing!
Loved watching this. As a 'larger' rider its great to see representation of atypical cyclists. Jamie's efforts were amazing to watch and no one can suggest that his weight prevents him being an awesome athlete... so good for other cyclists to appreciate how much extra effort it can take to drag those extra kilos up a climb. I also loved Hank being so supportive and encouraging, modelling what this looks like rather than some of the 'banter' style comments that we see on other male dominated sports based entertainment (and its got to be said that GCN used to be guilty of at times .... ie 'Olly gets dropped again'. How's that going for you all by the way?)
This was both so inspiring because of Jamie's personality and determination to do something he wasn't trained to do, and incredibly funny because of how Hank and Jamie played off each other the entire time. Well done both of you.
Give him better gear ratios if you you send him up Alpe d’Huez. 70 Kg cyclist have NO idea what a race bike feels like for giants. OR better yet, get one of the former pros to go up with him on a fixie with gears for flats. That would be fair. Guessing Jamie might die but so will James on a fixie.
There is no ‘best’, it’s completely sport specific. If you want to be able to ride fast up hills then ‘emaciated homunculus’ is best. If you want to be a great swimmer then ‘shaved orangutang’ is what you should aim for. Rock climber? Then hone yourself into a sinewy chipmunk.
No. All round fitness is the best. And it is much better for health and longevity .And swimmers do lift weights. The hell you think made short distance swimmers that big? Swimming? :’) a lot of athletes lift weights. They have all round fitness.
It's great to see a big man doing a hard climb like this. When I was young a did a lot of running and power lifting (they don't really go together) and those big quads swell up with blood and really don't want to go anymore. I'm impressed with Jamie's effort. The oxygen burn to fuel those big muscles is insane.
That was so fun to watch 😊. Good on you Jamie!!! You did so well!! Oh and yes please, would LOVE to see more content with Jamie on a bike. Sorry Jamie.
Very entertaining wonderful chemistry between Hank & Jamie friends out riding having fun, very good stuff. We can all relate to the moment Jamie keels over having found and reached his limit. Jamie should be a full time presenter. What a good sport. 20% is no small feat, and I'd definitely love to see Jaime climb Alpe d'Huez.
Fair play for taking on the challenge 💪👊Thanks!
thanks, what should be the next challenge for Hank? 🔥
Great more steroid money for him
This is my first time seeing Jamie but I gotta say he's an absolute natural on the camera. Really glad you got him on the channel, definitely want to see more!
Really enjoyed this. Jamie and Hank are a great duo for these videos, a perfect balance of banter and encouragement.
I hope Hank carries on doing these videos alongside the mansion renovations.
oh my! I loved it. Absolutely marvelous - Jaime's "authentic self" is a priceless addition to gcn
Respect for that, I was rooting for you all the way to the end of the vid. Would love to see Jamie in more vids, he seems like a top bloke.
This definitely ranks up in my most favorite GCN Videos! What a great balance of challenge and laughter! Hank & Jamie are definitely a great combo together! Keep up the amazing work and killer job Jamie!!!
Jamie is such a good sport! Loved Hank too. The cuddle at the end was hilarious.
Lots of fun. Being from Georgia, I was pulling for the big guy wearing a GEORGIA BULLDOGS cap. Hank, keep up the good work.
The comment I was looking for.
Well done.
Should Jamie come back in the future to seek revenge and complete the climb without putting his feet on the ground?
"Do you want to sit behind me for a bit" he saved some watts there 😂😂😂
Great video 👍
ThEsE aRe MaRgInAl GaInZ bRuH!!1one
Brilliant, well done Jamie. Kudos to Andrew and Hank for the encouragement, massive effort.
I was waiting for the bike to break. What is the max weight for that bike? Well done Jamie for doing a 100km. He is a big unit.
I love the humility displayed here guys. Great article. Thanks for playing. A
You should have just given him a better cassette, he was just running out of gears. Wouldn’t have hurt his quads so much 😅
I thought that watching, I bet he could have just spun his way up with more relaxed gears.
Agreed! He was grinding those gears too hard
Mountainbike for him.
@@petinka721or a gravel bike with a triple. 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
To be fair it looks like he is already riding a gravel bike with GRX 2x gearing that goes pretty low. Some hacks to get lower gears but much beyond that it’s mountain bike gearing time
What a pair of legends, that climb is brutally insane!! Well done Jamie 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 will miss Hanks content!!
Take my hat off to Jamie, 130kg and to take on Wiinnats. Chapeau again.
Great video! Jamie way to go! Always nice to see someone from another discipline step out of their comfort zone and attempt something that is so foreign and so difficult for them. Shows true humility! Congratulations!
What a sport, great content, Jamie is a natural on camera!!
One of the best and funniest videos you produced ever! Jamie is such a fighter and an entertainer and his chemistry with Hank is great!
Insane bpm!!! 😱 I wanna see more of him!
Well... he paid for it 😂
I guess his weight training includes many bpm peaks... so, since you get better at what you train, he might have his cardiovascular system tweaked to high bpm a bit 🤷♂️
Fair going for Jamie, he's a mountain, and determined, followed him for years and he's such a great guy
That was hilarious. Give the lad some lower gearing for the next big climb - He ran out of sprockets. Jamie's a sport, very entertaining. 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
That's just what occured to me also!!
Next time, Hank could tow him with one of those ropes
Well done Jamie that was an immense effort. I totally feel for him and understand that pain ! Love to see more of him
I weigh 85 kg ...for a 6 day trip I had 14kg of luggage/food on my gravel. 99kg total. Hills were miserable.
This guy weighs 130kg. Absolutely brutal staring weight
Train by wearing a 14kg backpack 24/7 and you’ll be smashing it next trip! 😅😂
Strap weights to your bike
Maybe if he stops using steroids...
Bear in mind though, that's probably somewhere in the region of 100Kkg of pure muscle mass.
@stuartmiles1401 steroids are amazing
That was FUN to watch! Bring him back! He did great! Respect
Wish you put the ride data on screen, gradient power etc.
Volontà e impegno vanno sempre premiati, quindi pollice in su 👍👍
Il gigante è crollato 2 volte, ma ha anche saputo rialzarsi e continuare. E' questo lo spirito del ciclista. Cadiamo o ci fermiamo, respiriamo, e continuiamo!!!
Loved this. It's always hilarious seeing someone else experience that level of pain on a bike knowing exactly what it feels like yourself. Well done 👌. In the interest of fairness, next video has to be Hank trying to squat 300kg in the gym 😂👍🏻
Brilliant effort, big man!
I completed Tieffenbach glacier Solden climb this year. Highly recommend it.
I am a 125kg myself, but on the fluffier side. This is so inspiring. Please bring Jamie back for videos. I love to have inspiration from these type of videos. ❤❤❤ much love gcn.
This was so epic, so fun, so painful to watch, awesome job Jamie, keep up the awesome work mate 💪👏👍
I love these videos with Jamie! He's such a great guy and watching him suffer is inspiring.
Thoroughly enjoy this video. Great sport Jamie and awesome interview Hank. I know Jamie would be able to do it, even if it took a while, but the effort was more brutal than I expected. So chapeu big guy 💪
We want him back !!!!
That was an amazing effort. Qell done, and to do this at 20% is a awesome feat. You should be proud dude!
290 that is like 3.5 cyclist worth of body mass. Great job!
Chapeau to Jamie for being such a good sport and getting himself out of his comfort zone. Keep it up and enjoy the ride!
Being small and light but yet strong is the key. Being big and bulky is more weight to push your body.
And more oxygen debt to full those delts and back
If you lift weights in the low rep ranges you can get damn strong without packing as much muscle.
@@michael1 You think anyone is going to read the book you wrote here?
@@irfuel If that's a book to you then you should probably avoid reading and most things. Please don't vote. It's a plus that you know your limitations.
Awesome effort. I’m also 130kg and appreciate how hard the climbs are.
You did better at that hill climb than ANY cyclist would do in the gym with you 👌
11:32 his beat rate was at 208 bpm!!! They nearly killed the guy!
I had been looking at the watts, not the HR. You are right - 208 HR is insane. Total commitment by Jamie.
@ yes, falling off is pretty much the expected outcome at 0 watts on a climb that steep.
I’ve edited my post to clarify the 208 bpm HR is insane.
But he survived for a possible future torture. What could we do now? 🤔
@gcn Mont ventoux is a nice option. There is a restaurant 6km before the top. He can eat chicken wings and then proceed with his effort 😂
The slowest time is actually 1:42:03. 0.6mph average, with an hour and a quarter stop halfway.
@@tobleramone walking
This is the content I needed but didn't know I needed! Props to the big man.
The moral of the video? Huge muscles require huge amounts of oxygen and nutrition.
Very Good point!!
Hearth rate is a personal thing, it being low or high isn't an indicator of fitness
Going this high heart rate at this age not just unhealthy but dangerous as well.
@@s1o2m3a4 it is not like he is 90 years old or smth
208 bpm that cannot be, especially that guy is probably 30 and over. These are absolutely elite numbers. My bet is bad reading from the out of the saddle riding
Edit: He is 39
@GiJoe94 they are not elite numbers.
That 12kg bike was the problem.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏🏼
Disc brakes on a hill climb 🤣
He might be too heavy for a carbon bike
He needs that though...
There aren't that many bikes that support 100kg+ riders...
This was both so inspiring because of Jamie's personality and determination to do something he wasn't trained to do, and incredibly funny because of how Hank and Jamie played off each other the entire time. Well done both of you.
201 bpm was the highest I ever got
What a natural for GCN! Jamie was great. Total fearless beast. Loved it.
First!?! Fair play to Jamie. He seems a good sport!
Finally a person on GCN that is not an ex pro and not into cycling seans decades. And it feels like he is a really nice guy!
I could feel every last milometer of Jamies effort. Great stuff - congratulations 😁
All round fitness is the best. Not looking like a 14 year old boy and being weak as the vast majority of cyclists and having great endurance.
Well DONE mate, you did fantastic! Not easy...a climb is a climb not matter what, and it is not for everyone. Great video!
It's great to see a big man doing a hard climb like this. When I was young a did a lot of running and power lifting (they don't really go together) and those big quads swell up with blood and really don't want to go anymore. I'm impressed with Jamie's effort. The oxygen burn to fuel those big muscles is insane.
The man is a trooper, amazing effort, my hat is off to this gentleman!!
Please get him in more videos! He's such an inspiration to me as a fellow lifter and recent cycling addict. I love the representabringhe brings!
What else would you like to see Jamie doing?
Jamie, what a likeable guy. Cycling can bring such diverse people together (maybe not on every ride).
That was so fun to watch 😊. Good on you Jamie!!! You did so well!!
Oh and yes please, would LOVE to see more content with Jamie on a bike. Sorry Jamie.
none of the cars dare honk at that dude! He's massive! Great video, 20 percent is a massive grade!
Absolute champion :) Smashing effort, that lad; chapeau!
Very entertaining wonderful chemistry between Hank & Jamie friends out riding having fun, very good stuff. We can all relate to the moment Jamie keels over having found and reached his limit. It shows that no matter how fit, powerful or strong we all have limits willpower alone cannot conquer. But fun is fun, even type two fun. More please.
Loved the challenge ! Support provided and jaime didn’t give up ! Rock on loved it !
Love seeing the big guy on the bike! Can’t wait to see what next you’ll have him do.
This gives me GCN nostalgia feels! loved this episode guys!
Thanks
Jamie is a legend!!! Always keep on ridin’ !! All the best from 🇩🇪
Amazing. This guy is a beast. I struggle with weight myself, and I know the difference a couple of kilos (yea KILOS no pound or whatever) can do to a performance. I am deeply impressed with what he just did.
I say, Bring more of the Giant. We love him.
Such a nice sport. He must be a very nice guy.
Cheers to the channel!
Amazing effort, really enjoyed the video. Jamie that was above and beyond, kudos!
