As a black belt, we do this instinctively, but I've never thought to point it out because I never truly focused on the mechanics. Very nice details, sir.
1:21 hip swivel 3:55 kick swivel 5:25 face opponent kick swivel 6:12 elbow for support kick swivel 6:45 just hips not body 7:35 arm hand palm facing away 8:50 foot shrimp 9:00 forward shrimp 10:05 only bring one knee in 10:25 push with knee feed foot 10:55 forearms in armpit
I attended your seminar at inverted gear in PA a couple years ago as a young blue belt and the hip tilt is one of the things i still implement today with great success. Thank you again!
I honestly didn’t even feel like I had a guard till I learned this for your videos . I share this all the time but not many people pick up on it and I feel it’s a fundamental
Jon, your videos have been helping me tremendously is a no stripe white belt. I’m quickly getting to the point of holding my own with blue and even some purple belts, and your videos have contributed to that
Thank you so much for the support! That means a ton! Without people supporting like you never could have been able to grow my channel and make the content that I have.
It would be great if you could include actual footage of the students trying to do the techniques after you just demonstrated them It’s very helpful to see you correct students mistakes because they’re the mistakes I’d make too!
Haha no problem happy you appreciate it! It truly is a battle of the algorithm. Have to give the most crazy titles to fight to the top to deliver good information
Great video, I often find being in side control and turned away difficult to recover from without going to turtle but I think the reverse shrimping will help. The north south guard recovery was a nice bonus too. Thank you!
lol yes exactly how I feel! I've watched quite a few guard retention videos in the last few years but this was a real 'aha' moment! Especially the detail of kicking out and elbow out to the side to help with the hip switch (as opposed to whole body rolling thing or trying to granby which I'm hopeless at). Thanks Jon!
So basically the whole time ur kicking ur free leg in the direction to align ur hips to face ur opponent. What if they have control of both legs though?
Dude I really like your vidoes, but the titles are a big turn off for people like me. We get enough instant gratification from being bombarded with ads and social media from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. Jiujitsu is where I believe I want to have something called delayed gratification, where I train and my efforts grow into polished mechanics and levels of awareness. Your content is amazing but the titles like bro how do you even quantify instantly 10x my guard retention lol.
Hey buddy I hate that the algorithm works that way too, but unfortunately it is how it works. I would love to label the video for example “ How to Properly Align Your Hip For Guard Retention “ but The click through rate will drop significantly, then the Algorithm won’t even show the thumbnail and you probably wouldn’t even know the video was released. I focus on making good videos with useful info, if you find it useful then you should be able to tolerate the silly titles sometimes. Believe me I have tested this many times and it’s like a 3 to 5 x difference in performance ( not exaggerating here ) Some of my best and favorite videos I have labeled basic like that, and people who love my channel will tell me they didn’t see that one posted. If you don’t want to watch them because of a title that’s cool. As far as retention details go I would say this is the number one killer for most people in my opinion. So I actually think it makes a huge difference and will completely transform your retention if not already implementing it.
@@JonThomasBJJ No no like I said I love your videos, they have greatly helped me improve! I didn't know that the title would have such a dramatic change for your engagement and earning a living, sorry brother I was a bit hasty in judging!
It’s okay buddy I totally understand, I don’t like those kind of titles either. Wish I could just ignore the algorithm. Have just had so many times that people tell me that had no idea I released a video so I just play ball with the way they have designed it, I appreciate the message

Yeah for sure! So many of these little things no one ever taught me but just realize when teaching you just started to do it naturally
1:21 hip swivel
3:55 kick swivel
5:25 face opponent kick swivel
6:12 elbow for support kick swivel
6:45 just hips not body
7:35 arm hand palm facing away
8:50 foot shrimp
9:00 forward shrimp
10:05 only bring one knee in
10:25 push with knee feed foot
10:55 forearms in armpit

Man thanks for letting me know! So crazy to hear how much little details like that effect people’s game in the long run

Man is happy to hear that! Hope it keeps on helping you all the way through your career
So many amazing small details in one video!
Thanks a lot buddy! Lots of little details like that I realize when I need to teach students
I love learning these subtle details, makes me appreciate the game more. Thanks for the videos.

Thank you for sharing these brilliant details master! As a blue belt i feel that my guard retention needed it much🔥
No problem happen help I know how hard it is out there! Best of luck in your next training
It would be great if you could include actual footage of the students trying to do the techniques after you just demonstrated them
It’s very helpful to see you correct students mistakes because they’re the mistakes I’d make too!
Great! I will definitely include that the next time I share one of these!
@@JonThomasBJJ I second this! It is very helpful to see the common mistakes and then the correction. Amazing as always professor!
Damn that hip detail is so helpful
谢谢!
Thank you for battling the algorithm to end up in my feed. This is great and I'm looking forward to seeing you other videos

Very nice details and explanations here, Jon!

Yeah it’s a big one! I will try to do a full video on it sometime soon.
Hi Jon, have to come train with you on day. Always grateful for your details.
Please do I’m in Gothenburg Sweden would be great to have you!
Follow the hips so important and so overlooked !
solid basic tips. thanks!
This is great stuff. I really want to see the defending north south class too!
Will definitely make a video on it soon!
AWESOME DETAIL
Great stuff 🫡
Makes sence:) Ill be trying tomorrow:)
Hope it helps!
very good!
I feel like settling the pass vs reguarding is the essential BJJ skill.
100 percent it is the main thing
@@JonThomasBJJhow many days a week do you train Jiujitsu and how many days do you training strength and cardio?
Always usefull stuff
This may be a game changer for me. I feel like I am swimming in molasses when a speedy young guy is circling me.
Yeah it’s such a small change but is usually the cause of most of the problems feeling like you are in quick sand

how do you do when your opponent is strong and grip you the pants and pin you to pass ? I'm ashamed I'm new blue belt but clearly sucks hard.
Great 😊
Thanks 😊
