🦖🦕 I love Grant! He's such an awesome teacher!
Btw I can totally relate to the struggle of being very generalized and interested in everything, I'm completely paralized by job offerings 😢

Great episode Curtis, and it was great to get to know you better Grant. I got into the discussion a lot... and kept making notes. So here they are:
At 7:00 you two discuss imposter syndrome, and self-denigration as a coping mechanism, however from where I stand nowadays I see self-denigration as a necessary tool to counter the tendency of the ego to expand itself, like... to keep yourself in check. When you project self-denigratory statements outwardly, it's a social mechanism as well. It's only if you internalize it and inhabit the ego self that it can create inner suffering. I believe that the true state of things is that nobody really knows anything, the world is the blind being led by the slightly-less-blind.
At 15:00 Curtis you mention Factorio. That game.... I won't install on my main machine because it's just too addictive for me. I get totally absorbed in optimization, captured. After that Grant you talk about your views on gaming not being a good use of time anymore (or being 'over' gaming a bit) and I echo that. It seems that it's just not the most optimal use of time for me anymore, and there's a lot of commitment required for new games. I game now mostly as a social tool at night to catch up with friends from around the world, usually Minecraft or Fortnite, usually coop. I got into Blender originally because I wanted to make a game, not sure anymore. LOVE that you guys came to the conclusion that 'life is a game' basically from first principles. Yes. Life is a game, hardcore roguelike with a bitch of an RNG.
At 28:00 you guys get onto the specialize vs generalize topic, and this is always very cogent for me. Specializing seems very dangerous to me these days. But I'm biased as a generalist. Is my rationale copium? Or is adaptability way more important than specialized tool expertise? I also have training background, did training/HR for nearly 10yrs.
At 32:00 you guys start on AI... I very much share your concerns Grant about the wealth gap becoming exponentially worse. I foresee a multi-tier future, where corporations and governments are fully incentivized to capture and control the premium AI tools, and the general population gets access to 2nd-tier, so that we feel we have tools but ultimately the interests of the existing power structures are furthered to an extreme end. I don't know if that's what's going to happen. Altman talks a lot about massive socioeconomic change, hinting at a broad socialist movement, but.... I don't fully trust him or any of the execs at OpenAI. They took their open-source model private.
At 38:00 Grant you talk about being an independent film or game creator - and that is nailing my ambition on the head. That's why I started learning Blender in 2020. It takes a while, but seeing Ian Hubert's route is promising, and with all the new AI tools coming out.... it's VERY possible now. We are entering the heyday of independent creation, which will also include a deluge of mediocre expression to sort through but will have many many more 'needles in the haystack' to be sought and hopefully found.
At 53:00 you guys talk about the Blender community, and its unique mix of creativity and technicality. I have to say that BCON22 rejuvenated my view on humanity overall, meeting so many likeminded people. It's really a great community. I really enjoyed meeting you Curtis and so many other creators and UA-camrs, and so many others using Blender in their work and creative endeavours.

Two of my favourite 3D artists, and a good chunk of the core of my inspiration, both in the same video. Love you guys!
Totally agree with the patterns from white noise theory. The majority of the positive comments i get on my videos are along the line of "i couldn't understand it but you made it so clear and concise it was easy".

One of my favourite talks I watched recently, really enjoyable to listen. You've touched on so many important aspects of being an artist (I came for your take on AI (and, because you're my favourite blenderers), stayed for the philosophization ;) ).
I'm really interested in your other rules now Curtis :) What are they? How often do you remind yourself of them? How strict are you with them?

I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. There are about 30 rules in total, but the list is constantly changing. Now there's some interest, I should probably throw them into a blog post for people to read.
I remind myself of a few of them pretty much every day. Some like 'you don't know what you don't know' are quite universal and can be applied to many experiences.
But the times I remind myself the most are when I'm feeling particularly anxious or overwhelmed. Sometimes it's comforting to have a structure to remind yourself of what to (or not to) do.
I'm not always strict with them (hence rule 1: 'all things within reason'), but sometimes even my other friends remind me of the rules during conversations if I talk about something I've been dealing with.
So it's quite funny to see how universal they are, and how quickly other people pick up on them.

In the first few minutes there was an interesting topic: background noise. Do you need something in the background, like radio or music or something like that? Or do you just prefer silence? Or does it not matter?
Second, around 56:00 , AutoDesk products: Today I used AutoCAD 2024 for the first time at work (I've been using AutoCAD since sometime in the early 90's and each version was bought for a lot of money; especially Inventor is in heavy use at our company). I use Blender for mockups for industrial plant construction, ant this works very quick and really very good.
But, trying to transfer the mockup created in Blender into ACAD to create the government-mandated plans was one of my worst experiences ever. 7 hours of trial and error just to be able to import the geometry, which would not be editable in any way in ACAD at all. Just to mention that. 🐊

Also super nice, that Grant is such a cool guy. Hope you got a chance to convince him to come to the Blender conference this year 😉
