    Totally want a Curtis Holt branded microscope. <3 The wire connection to the circuit board looks like a JST connector (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector), which can be carefully tugged loose; it's a plug and socket arrangement. That would allow you to rotate the whole assembly with the cable out of the way. They're not something you want to plug and unplug on a daily basis, but they are intended to be disconnected for repairs, and they make assembly a lot easier, because you don't need to directly solder a wire to the board. The metal that you're seeing when you scrape the surface of the circuit board is copper! Typical modern circuit boards are made from FR-4 glass-reinforced resin, onto which is deposited a thin layer of copper. The copper gets photo-etched away to print the wires and pads of the circuit board, but anywhere that hasn't been used specifically for the circuit design (like the edges of the board where you're scraping) still has an intact layer of copper. You likely won't harm the board in the spot where you're scraping; most board manufacturers require you to avoid placing your circuit traces too close to the edge for manufacturing reasons. But with the JST connector disconnected, you shouldn't need to saw through those bits of the circuit board, anyhow.

    Nice developments :). Regarding the use of a dock for SSD, here's an FYI from my own recent adventures: (armchair expert incoming) (I got a USB3 dock and it's just not transferring as fast as I would have liked). There are limitations to USB-C expansion cards as they usually dont get a PCI-e slot with the bandwidth for the full transfer speed. Usually the only accessible PCI slot goes through the bridge and not directly to a CPU lane. I've discovered there is a USB4.1 connector on my motherboard (which is quite old) I didn't know was there and it has it's own dedicated lane. Bought a USB4.1 Type E to Type C connector for around $30 and now through the back of my case I have a fully functional USB-C slot. Good chance you may have one on your MoB too. Also, USB-C now supports thunderbolt which accesses the common bus directly to the cpu giving some pretty crazy speeds. Thunderbolt was formally just for for Apple Mac, mostly used by editors who would use a thunderbolt compatible SSD dock for video editing. Additionally, when reading over usb-c there is some 20microsecond delay before transfer begins and with thunderbolt (over the PCI-e directly) there is some 0.02microsecond delay. over many transfers, this adds up (apparently). Hopefully that's interesting, maybe will help get those faster transfer speeds. Otherwise, I have been looking at NAS and although I really want one it now falls into the category of "good in theory, mediocre in practice". Also, it's not as trivial to run and maintain for common folk as it would be for a proper network engineer (who is usually the kind of person who swears by it).

    LaCie (and others, but I can vouch for LC) makes good, ruggedized external storage powered via USB-C --- using an powered external USB-C hub hooked up to a fast USB 3.x port on your machine, you can easily power a half-dozen or so at once with only a single DC adapter for your main machine, then just velcro the small usb-c drive cage to the bottom of the laptop platter on the tripod and have the laptop power it via usb-c 🙂 Just a thought I had while watching based on some stuff I've been tinkering with here in my small home lab. Thanks for sharing your journey, inspiring me to comment (I normally only lurk) --- Looking forward to more from the Studio and, ofc, more forward looking Blender content (my fave!)

    I understand why you explain your decision to use SSD hotswaps instead of NAS. I actually just did a bit of a dive into a home server/NAS/firewall unit. I also have cold backups that are completely disconnected (external drives that I backup every few months). This is the kind of stuff that can occupy a person forever, just gotta choose a system and use it :D 💾

    🦾 Legoland California has an oversized robot arm with a chair on the end of it, and it's one of the most entertaining theme park rides I've ever been on. Also terrifying to watch it in action; I can easily see it snapping your neck if misprogrammed. Or if the machines revolt. Looking forward to seeing how you put that little monster to use!

    That’s a cool tripod for your capture rig. Looking forward to seeing the expanded views you’ll bring us from your new workspace and wherever you want really 👍 I’d recommend artificially weighting the bottom down to lower the center of gravity in order to fight against toppling if/when it gets bumped or someone trips on the cables. And I with you that the Logitech camera you are using does look good. What make/model?

    • @CurtsStudio
      @CurtsStudio 8 днів тому

      Thanks, yeah I definitely need to weigh down the bottom 😅. The camera is a Logitech Streamcam, with some value corrections afterwards in Premiere (although it doesn't really need them).

    Generally speaking, multiple lower doses are preferable to one large dose; the body can't always absorb the entire dose all at once. However, supplements are not uniformly blended, so if you break a pill into 5 parts you can't be certain you're getting 1/5 of the dose. 🎥

      That, and on some (but not all) of the solids is a film-like outer layer that I assume is for slower release, which would be broken by splitting them up.

    Looks awesome, I'm jealous! Love the idea of cyclicly using all the resources. I mapped out some similar stuff for digital resources and just how far you can extrapolate everything a while ago - there really is so much you can do by "resource hoarding" & recontextualising resources. Have fun, thanks for sharing!

  • @zachhoy
    @zachhoy 10 днів тому

    Very cool space. I echo the 'resourceful hoarder' self-designation... and I ALSO turn it into art, or use for other functional purposes. I'm probably a level 3 of 5 hoarder... or 4/5 lol. I've slowed down recently as it's getting harder and harder to 'compress' these days. Those clear acrylic frames are very cute, really happy to see you leaning into physical art, it's very freeing. I find I need to have some time away from my computer, since about 95% of my other aspirations are computer-based. And thanks again for sharing about BPPV, it's informative and helps me learn. Magnesium, impacts on proprioception, the neural circuit tests, neural vestibular issues, all very interesting to hear you talk about imo.

    Thank you for discussing this topic. I agree with the idea of the icon on handmade artwork. I think the specifics of it can get a little iffy, since some people might want to use AI for post processing as you said. Is that considered handmade? I am also worried about artists losing their jobs and more importantly, handmade art going out of style. You had a well thought approach and I believe more and more people will have to start thinking about this topic as time passes and AI gets more developed.
