Bombings Force Sloviansk Residents to Flee: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 49)

The conflict in eastern Ukraine has not yet entered into all-out war, but every day and every week the situation is becoming more fraught. Despite Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's call for a ceasefire, shelling has persisted in the rebel stronghold of Sloviansk.
VICE News visited a section of Sloviansk that was recently struck by an attack, and spoke with the residents about the chaos of the attack and its aftermath. We also visited a local hospital and spoke with medical workers who have stayed behind to treat the increasing number of wounded.
Caught up in the standoff, and facing gas and water shortages, residents across eastern Ukraine have been fleeing for safety. According to Kiev, some 120,000 people have been internally displaced from the region and are currently seeking refuge in Russia and elsewhere across the country as the area's humanitarian crisis worsens.

I think the sad lesson to learn from this, for the crowd roaring approvingly at the rallies in support of aggresive, armed macho-heros (slash yesterday's petty criminals and unemployed drunks, trying to take advantage of the moment), is that sometimes, when you declare war on someone, it actually begins. Pro-Russians thought it would be as easy in the Crimea, Russian troops roll in, they get to make selfies with machine-guns, everyone who disagrees declared a Ukrainian nazi, actual war happens some place else. Well the Bear doesn't really care that much about the most underdeveloped region of Ukraine and it's pauperized population, it needs naval bases, oil and gas (as in Crimean shelf). Putin didn't move in his troops there not only because of the pressure of west, but mainly because these lands have no strategic value for Russians on their own.
***** The president was never overthrown in the legal sense. There was no immediate threat to his life at any point and neither military nor the police joined the protesters. Furthermore, he had an option of political resolution up to the last point, even after the mass shootings of the protesters. Howerver, he decided not to deal with political consequences of his actions and fled the country. The interim goverment was appointed by the legit majority of the parlament, due to president's absence, in full accordance with Ukrainian constitution.
***** It appears that you fail to comprehend the basic concepts of law.
The constitution of every country forsees the situation when the elected president goes missing under strange circumstances and there is no vice-president to replace him. Ukrainian constitution stipulates that the new elections must be announced and the interim goverment must be appointed by the parlament as the only legitimate power elected by citizens. May be a bit different in North Korea and Russia, I'm not sure what you guys have.
However, I do agree that the pro-Russian rebels could have planned their approach better. Putin pretty much declared within 3 weeks that he would not be supporting them directly and that he would not send in the troops to help them. Considering that there are not enough supporters to make this insurgency successful there is really no reason to continue for the pro Autonomy rebels.
Props to the father at the end bringing his wife n kids to a safer area by walking/biking with all of them. I hope these people find safety and stability soon.

many refuges to both russia and ukraine. people running to their relatives mostly. so far i have seen many videos of refuges to russia and not so many to ukraine, but at the same time I have more russian than ukrainian sources so don't take my word on it

I find it funny that all these people blame the government but not one blames the rebels for setting up their headquarters in their city and announcing their allegiance to Russia. Not one. If the rebels weren't there trying to break apart Ukraine then there would be no need for any fighting. Ukraine has every right to fight armed separatists.

Russia has nothing to do with it? Except for the part where old Russian tanks were seen crossing into Ukraine, where former Russian soldiers are crossing the border to help the separatists, and where the separatists have gotten all their supplies directly from Russia. But no, Russia is not "formally" involved.
As for that whole argument, I guess it would be ok for any city in Russia to break away and want to form their own government and if Russia were to send troops to fight that, then Russia would be in the wrong there too? Or you can go back to the civil war in the US. Each state in the south should be allowed to split right? It's a civil war, that's all this is. Because the citizens decided to take up guns and force the police out, this is what has happened. No country is going to allow someone to break away because they want to.

I like your coverage but in this dispatch there is a mistake in translation. In Russian people use intonation to distinguish between a question and an assertion, there is no inverted word order in this case. First statement 0.00-0.03 has rising intonation and therefore it should be translated as "Are we running away because of our government`s actions?" Since people from Slowyansk flee to Izyum which is a government controlled territory her next sentence " People run to a good life and flee from a bad one" proves that her first statement was a rhetorical question.

Откровения проснувшейся от наркотического дурмана киевской интеллигенции.
"Этот пост я пишу, выехав из Украины. Что-то подобное я собирался написать ещё в Киеве, но тогда ещё не выкристаллизовалась моя позиция, да и опасения были за своё будущее, за материальное положение и даже за жизнь. У меня есть старый блог в ЖЖ, и я довольно известная персона не только в Киеве, но во всей Украине.
Итак: пишу не под своим именем из-за пределов родной и любимой Украины. И пишу этот пост на русском языке, чтобы они тоже читали и видели, что есть в Украине люди, пытающиеся мыслить объективно, и ещё есть люди, которым надоело слушать чужие интерпретации, а хочется, наконец, услышать голос разума. Да и общаться на русском мне как-то комфортнее.
Я когда выехал из Украины - как из воды вынырнул. Надышаться не мог жизнью, свободной жизнью без политиков, политических новостей и ненависти, повсеместной ненависти. А ведь я был на Майдане Независимости. Почти с самого начала, в самые первые дни стал туда ходить. Первый раз всей семьёй пришли, а потом и один, и с друзьями - когда как. И деньги приносил, и перечислял.., и вещи, и эсэмэски... И участвовал. В общем, я принял революцию, и в ней есть мой вклад. Но потом я стал задумываться. Извините, но это свойственно творческим натурам: задумываться, относиться к действительности критично, критично относиться к себе.
Мне стало остро интересно - чего же мы хотим? Чего хочет наш маленький, но свободолюбивый народ? Не то, что говорим с трибун, или с экрана телевизора, и не то, что пишет наша пресса и публикует интернет, не то, что говорят наши политики, а - что нами движет? Что заставляет нас действовать, говорить, писать, спорить, требовать - погибать самим и убивать других? Что нас делает такими, какие мы есть?
Первые проблески понимания у меня возникли в тот день, когда я попал в толпу футбольных фанатов. В большинстве своём это были подростки и парни не старше 20-22 лет. Они прорвались в метро, крича, матерясь, задираясь. А потом я оказался в одном вагоне с ними. Нет, я воспринимал их как своих, не ощущая агрессии к себе с их стороны. А потом они принялись за известное мероприятие - вы знаете, какое. И тогда я впервые почувствовал насилие над собой. Я должен был подпрыгнуть с ними хотя бы пару раз, чтобы показать с какой стороны баррикад я нахожусь. А ведь я уже сделал свой выбор прежде. Но толпу не интересует добровольный выбор одной из своих частиц: толпа принуждает, толпа заставляет сделать этот выбор ещё раз и предъявить его в варварской, дикарской форме. Моя добровольность ей не в счёт… В общем, мне не по нутру эти пляски. Ради чего мне, взрослому серьёзному человеку, опускаться до такого? Чтобы меня не считали москалём? Бред!
Позже было ещё кое-что, но поворотным моментом для моего понимания стала трагедия в Одессе. Я понял, что идёт охота на ведьм, и ведьм уже начали сжигать. Их можно сжигать. Если прежде я представлял «москаляку» (которого на гиляку) как пьяного, небритого, грязного и злого мужика, то теперь увидел, что среди москалей и 50-летняя учительница Мария Ивановна, и молодой отец, ведущий своего сына в детский сад, и девушка, идущая на своё первое свидание - они все быдло, ватники, москали, и с ними можно делать всё что угодно нам.
Я вспомнил, как в одной из палаток на Майдане Независимости, во время самого разгара событий, висела карта, на которой наши активисты отмечали лояльные города. На этой карте часть Украины была отделена чертой и обозначена - «титушки». И в разговорах мы всегда восток не принимали в расчёт, как активный элемент. Мы хотели установить власть в Киеве, а дальше следовало начать очистку востока от всяких титушек. Мы чувствовали себя вершителями судеб, демиургами - а Харьков, Донецк и прочее считали полем своей деятельности. И вот, я подошёл к главному…
Мы не допускаем мысли, что москали, кацапы, титушки… нет, назовём прямо - русские, равны нам. Для нас они быдло. Тупое быдло, рабы, ватники, орда, животные, насекомые. Мы не можем допустить мысли, что они могут иметь своё мнение, могут что-то решать. Это мы - люди, мы можем иметь мнение, планы, симпатии, а они на такое не способны. Они могут только исполнять приказы своего фюрера - Путина. Поэтому для нас совершенно неприемлема точка зрения, что в Донецке или в Луганске население может по собственной инициативе сопротивляться власти, которую мы для них захватили. Допустим такую крамольную мысль, и придётся принять как факт то, что русские тоже способны организованно сопротивляться, биться насмерть по своей воле. Способны драться за свою свободу, за свои права, за своё будущее. Согласитесь - мы не можем допустить такую мысль. Поэтому мы упорно будем себе всегда доказывать, что это Путин или Янык направляет своих титушек, рабов, ватников, это Путин шлёт к нам чеченцев, которые терроризируют быдлонаселение востока. А ведь мы забываем, что ещё совсем недавно, в Харькове и Донецке не было вооружённых людей, а тысячные толпы захватывали администрации, по примеру нашего Майдана.
Нет, мы никогда не считали москалей людьми. Нам всегда хотелось завалить Путина, а рабов переподчинить другому хозяину. Это же наша национальная забава: зарегиться под «ванькой» и написать что-то такое. Мол, довёл Путин страну, до края, нет больше жизни никакой, нищета и беспросветность. Ни хрена себе - свобода! Мы кушаем с руки американской дипломат-матершиницы булочки, а донецких считаем рабами. Мы хотим чтобы Украина была единой, а американцы со своими секретными штуками, тепловизорами и прочей хренью, находят для наших хлопцев цели, среди наших же сограждан. Мы позволяем им отрабатывать свои технологии на донецких и луганских. Каково, а?
А смотрите как Парашенка прошёл мимо падающего солдата. Ведь тот падал, когда наш презик ещё не минул его. Только ссутулился от страха и шаг прибавил. Не остановился, не помог. Прошёл мимо и всё! Конечно, он шёл к власти! Что ему какой-то солдат, простой человек? Спасибо, что ноги не вытер об хлопца. Сколько раз он так поступал, поднимаясь к вершине власти? Мы готовы их убивать, но не договариваться с ними, чтобы они не возомнили о себе невесть что. Конечно, ведь они быдло, насекомые. Мы прекрасно понимаем, что Россия не примет к себе угольный восток. Потому-что ей не нужен уголь, а мы можем отказаться от него. И пойдут шахтёры стучать касками в Москву, а не в Киев. Мы могли бы договориться, но не можем себе такого позволить. Мы хотим уничтожить быдло, возомнившее себя людьми. Наши лидеры хотят полностью уничтожить лидеров сепаратистов, чтобы увеличить своё стадо. И Парашенка пользуется этим, наживая авторитет на крови. В том числе, и на крови участников Майдана. Мы ненавидим восточное быдло, титушек и пойдём на всё, чтобы растереть их в порошок, но не примем их за ровню.
Я не знаю, как мне теперь жить в Украине. Я не хотел бы уезжать, но, наверное, придётся. Но я надеюсь, что понимание придёт и другим людям из числа интеллигенции. Ведь это не мы сделали революцию. Её сделали специально подготовленные люди, прошедшие подготовку в лагерях Литвы и Польши - люди с ненавистью в сердце. Её финансово-медийно обеспечили и направили люди из Америки и Европы - люди со своими интересами. А мы только легитимизовали её для мировой общественности. Наш ли это выбор? Если наш, то почему опять олигархи у власти, а в стране ненависть? Может хватить бесноваться и делать всё в пику кому-то, а сделаем что-то для себя? Может, для начала, начнём уважать других, и допустим мысль, что они не рабы и быдло - а люди? Люди - со своей судьбой, мечтами, правом на свободу и счастье.

People from Donbass are suffering because of the central government, When it was peace there, the goverment levied high taxes from Donbass. After the Maydan the goverment is trying to carry out ethnic cleansing, cause the population of Donbass dont want to support it, believing in fake history(something like if the English supported Oswald Mosley or the French encouraged the ideas of the so-called"le regime de Vichy", they would look like todays Ukranian nationalists). There are no Russian troops there, just a few volunteers, the native people are in majourity to protect there fatherland from the central goverment and it's attempts to kill the population. P.S. just a few days ago the defense minister stated that after the operation they would build concentration camps in oder to check native population to be sure of loyality of Donbass.

Of course it is difficult to see the context of the conversation. But as they run to Ukraine controlled by Ukrainian government and as person putting them to the car is talking aout the refuge centers managed by the state and pro-Ukrainian activists, I doubt she considers Ukrianian government a source of the problem. I am sure there are many people in Slaviansk who disagree, but from what this person says on camera, I do not here what you put in her mouth.
I believe you do very good reports. You might want to consider discussing it with other native speakers to check.
