    On July 5, the eastern Ukrainian town of Sloviansk was recaptured by the Ukrainian military, driving out pro-Russia rebels and ending their three-month occupation. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels back to Sloviansk and visits the cell in which he was held for days by those rebels in April. The city is in shambles and residents are struggling to find food and water despite a considerable humanitarian effort. The pro-Russia rebels have retreated to Donetsk, but the Ukrainian government is determined to pursue its anti-terror operation until there are no rebels left.

    Ever since Simon Ostrovsky was captured and released, there seems to be more and more Russians targeting these videos to try and change viewer opinions. Why would you even bother? The whole point of a good documentary is to capture real events and present them in a non-biased perspective. Even before he was captured, he tried to interview Pro-Russian soldiers and they were assholes to him. On one occasion, they captured him saying he had a knife on him when he was unarmed. Do not think that he has not tried to get a Russian point of view on this.

      Trying to appeal to people's commonsense is more like it. I doubt many Russians or Ukrainians actually watch VICE, not that they have something against the content, but there are many outlets that provide up-to-date coverage in their languages.
      Nope, Westerners are the majority on these videos, which is why 100% of the comments are in English.

    That old woman at the end, poor thing. She's been alone for years, she's seen the world change so many times, been through much more trauma than most people are, then she gets caught up in a war of petty politics and land grabbing. Just look at the people outside, they don't see one another as Ukrainians anymore, just pointing fingers like children while old women at the end are lucky to be alive.
    Too many people are dying over this, and neither side seems to have intentions on stopping until the other is obliterated. What a shame, because the major victims are the ones caught in the crossfire, and in the end superheated lead projectiles and explosives don't have political beliefs.

    The Only side to blame for this mess are the Separatists. They brought this on themselves and the residents who supported them. The Lawful, government of Ukraine has every right to put down an armed resistance. If they had grievances, then they should have peacefully protested and brought their concerns up through the political process. I am sure the current government would not have shot Protestors, as the last one had done.
    Edit: I have to add that I do feel horrible for the situation these people are in. In most cases, the apartments are their only "wealth". When the Soviet Union collapsed, these people were given ownership of the apartments in which they lived. I know from personal knowledge, that in many cases all these older people have are their apartments and a $200 a month pension from the government.
    Its a horrible situation that these Ukrainians have been put in.

The current gov't DID turn a blind eye and had the police stand down/not intervene when protesters in Odessa were burned and gassed by yet-to-be-prosecuted far-right extremists. Neither is the current government open to any type of discussion about federalization. Just politics.

    What type of government does this to their people though? was war the only option? couldn't they have used foot soldiers head on approach or was bombing and shelling the only way? Bloody hell there was no respect to the safety of civilians here and the civilians should charge them. If it was an Arab government which did this i am sure there would've been a NATO or American backed army to topple that existing government that ruled with an iron fist over its people........*from a non bias point of view but rather a humanitarian one*

    • @Rpahut1

    • @Snagabott
      @Snagabott 10 років тому +18

      Bullshit. You can't rush a fortified town with infantry unless you're prepared to lose loads of them. Besides; if you try, the damage would be much worse. Thing about soldiers is that they don't really want to die any more than anyone else, so if you start throwing them away, they'll mutiny. It's well documented that the (pro) Russians used to hide their mortar positions inside the city, so the Ukrainians either had to just sit still and get blown up or shoot back to show them that they couldn't count on human shields.
      In the end the rebs had to abandon the city; not because they were bombed out of it, but because it got surrounded.

    • @Rpahut1
      @Rpahut1 10 років тому +3

      Nkakzola Africano From the humanitarian point of view, it would be best to put all ambitions aside and all weapons down, for either side. But they fight and use all kinds of weapon, the bombs are just less predictable and leave more noticeable marks.

    • @npafrica
      @npafrica 10 років тому +2

      Snagabott very true I hear your justification of things but come on man those old people had despair written on their faces. Good enough they lost the city but yes they got shelled which ultimately led to them being surrounded and they had to abandon it if they wanted to survive. My biggest concern is what happened to other options was this the only option? why has it come so easy to mankind to resort to violence as a method of instilling control or power?

    On a serious note, do VICE think Simon is the best person to report on this? I don't think he's as biased as some make out but he certainly must harbour some sour feelings to the Separatists (understandably as they arrested him on a ridiculous pretence). This conflict is so tragic as both sides seem so unwilling to open anything near a constructive diplomatic dialogue. The USA and Russia seem to be living in the 19th century with their balance of power bullshit, which treats Ukraine as another sphere of influence. Such a shame for the civilians caught in the middle.

    Ukraine is going to lose this war. They're fighting on their own turf against insurgents. Other wars in the past are very similar to this one.
    Soviet-Afghan War
    Vietnam War
    American Revolutionary War
    You know what all these wars have in common? A super powers that were fighting against an unorganized armed group, they all lost. Ukraine can drop thousands of rebel bodies but that won't be enough to deter from giving up.

    • @SovietButcher

      "Unorganized armed group"; sure buddy, the NVA and VC weren't organized and backed by the USSR, the colonists were unorganized and weren't backed by Spain and France, the Taliban were unorganized and weren't backed by the USA. What are you on? Crack? Or do you just not know History AT ALL?
      Well, you and the 2 people who upvoted your ignorant comment (Might only be one person though)
      Also let me add, these groups had the support of the people, the seperatists clearly don't have the support of the majority, look at how they just turn their coats once the Ukrainian army steps in, there's even a guy admitting to it when he says that the lady is just like them, a turncoat.

      TheMrRedSir Ok, again, those groups weren't unorganized. I think you need to get that through your thick skull. Number 2, these wars involved invaders that had nothing to do in the war; involving themselves against locals. Here it's the oppostie, we have Russian and Chechens involving themselves with the insurgents against the locals.
      Did you see how quick the people switched sides?! Ukrainian army comes in, EVERYONE IS PRO UKRAINE! How funny. Compare that to the wars you mentioned and you'll notice that the insurgents had popular support ESPECIALLY when the US,USSR or the British Empire were occupying an area.
      Again, learn the History before trying to compare things.
      My point stands, you're ignorant and probably never even read a book about these wars you're using as examples.

      But you aren't 1st. UA-cam doesn't always show the first comments. Not that it matter who the fuck is first....... It's annoying as fuck to see 30+ people on every video saying 1st.

      Thats how people with your perpective sees the world, if i dont agree with you im eating up your enemies propaganda, even tho i dont think that ether side tells the whole picture, they never will, the truth is told be the winners, so someone will aways say that makes them look as heros! So yeah, you are brainwashed, people who get the story from "america" and believes in it without questioning it are also brainwashed and doesnt matter how much you hate that i disagree with you and keep saying im brainwashed, nope, i just dont follow blindfully to just one side of the story!

      All news from vice including the news on Ukraine seem very neutral and unbiassed. Just because they are Western does not mean they report with Western views.

      Vincent Vernay Unbiased and neutral? Hah. Well maybe their series should be called something else instead of not so subtly suggestful "Russian Roulette" (top kek, Vice editors.). Maybe their reports should feature the real, unedited sides of the story. How many times have you seen their reports portraying Ukrainian citizens as the level-headed and peaceful people? And how many times have you seen them show ethnically-Russian citizens as the most aggressive and just feral human beings?
      The whole point of their "news" series is to do nothing but demonise Russia. You can bet a top dollar that they are either paid to do so, or just share the same anti-Russian view as a group.

      SovietDoge At one point in this video they said that that elderly home got hit by UKRAINIAN artillery fire. Do you think that they would say that if they were trying to demonize Russia? And maybe the pro russians are being showed as more aggressive because they see the camera and know that it is Western media.

    Those last few seconds of the video... and that last zoomed in snapshot of the old lady... speaks the horror of the conflict.
