Trapped by Artillery Fire: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 88)

  • After a lull in fighting between the Ukrainian military and the Russian-backed rebels of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR) in eastern Ukraine, violence escalated again in mid-January.
A ceasefire agreed in September seemed barely worth the paper it was written on. A battle continued to rage around the strategically important Donetsk airport, as the Ukrainian soldiers - dubbed “cyborgs” for their resilience - fought to keep the airport from the DNR.
They were unsuccessful. The DNR claimed the airport on January 21, and subsequently launched an offensive on Ukrainian positions along the line of control that separates the two sides. Civilian areas have come under heavy shelling, leaving dozens killed and wounded.
In this dispatch, VICE News headed back to eastern Ukraine to see the effect this new escalation in the conflict is having on the innocent civilians, trapped between opposing barrages of deadly artillery fire with nowhere to go.

I used to have a friend who I'd play games with online within a group of players, It was ever week we would get together three nights of that week and play.
But I remember once this all kicked off in the Ukraine he came on and told us he wouldn't be able to come on anymore, He was being drafted into the Army to help at the beginning of the war. It really sucks whats going on over there :(
Here was a boy I knew for 3 year (He was only 18) Who was a nerd and liked to play video games on his computer, Came on and told us he couldn't speak with us anymore because he was being pulled into the army.
It's been two years since we heard from him and I really wish him safety and good health.

Best reporting? More like best reporting in the interests of the USA. Vice is very sided and biased. Best reporting comes from independent journalists and people actually living there. Yes, it is ok to follow biased and sided sources(like vice, bbc, rt, etc) because truly independent sources are hard to find, but watch the bias from both sides. Both Russian and American media tell something the other one does not tell. "best reporting" is almost impossible, so we have to do it with what we have.

I gave up long ago attempting to argue against the PropRussians in comment sections. For all of those who actually care for some information.
Lets take a look at what started this war. Firstly the former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych promised to sign a trade agreement with EU and most of the people supported this move but then he got a huge loan from Russia and went back on his promise in the last moment and tried to join the Eurasian Union. Peaceful protests started in Maidan Nezalezhnosti weeks before the signing was suppose to take place to show Yanykovich that people want to have trade agreement with European Union. Yanukovich after going back on his promise send in Berkut to disperse peaceful protesters camping in the city square, these were mostly young people, college students, who were standing up for a chance for better education and job opportunities. Things continued to escalate in the city, with attacks happening from both the police and primarily the former Berkut which used live rounds, kidnapped, killed and tortures volunteers and protesters, burned down one of the building that was used as a hospital where protesters were being treated. The Ukrainian president was forced to flee his Mansion and seek asylum in Rostov on Don due to the encroachment of violent protesters for ordering of killing of Ukranians. Because of this many off the police surrendered, causing the defeat of the remaining Berkut. Yanykovich was impeached according to Ukrainian constitution and temporary government was set in place and election scheduled.

This is bullshit how they are saying both sides have shelled civilians. The separatists have NEVER shelled or killed any civilians on purpose or accident. They are highly trained and do not make such mistakes, nor would they ever kill civilians on purpose. They don't even want to kill Ukrainian fascists soldiers and will not fire on them unless the Ukrainians attack first and try to murder them or civilians. The Ukrainian military is the only one who has murdered civilians on purpose and accident. They are not well trained so they always make mistakes, and when they don't make mistakes they purposely kill civilians in order to try to blame others.
Stop being blind sheep who are not able to think for themselves. The separatists haven't killed anyone who wasn't trying to kill them. They don't murder people and they don't make mistakes.

A simple truth in why it will be very hard for Ukraine to gain its sovereignty like lithuania was able in the 90`s. The Governor was speaking Ukranian in his speech directed at the people, in the interview he decided to speak russian. . . why???

I'm happy that VICE returned to Ukraine for an update.
I'm really sad that it has come to this state.
Ukraine just wants to chart her own course, but Putin would never allow it.
Hope that there'll be a resolution.

What separates Russians and other ethnic groups which gained independence, Russia sees fall of USSR as a defeat and humiliation, others see it as a victory of independence and self determination.
