One thing I don't see people talking about nearly enough when comparing the games are the worlds themselves. You kinda' touched on that here when you talked a bit about Old Villedor, but it goes deeper than that.
Harran had a stronger identity, and it genuinely felt like a lived in world before the apocalypse. There were stores, pharmacies, hotels, hospitals, schools, restaurants, etc. None of them needed to be marked on your map and given a distracting waypoint on your HUD because everything made sense. It was a realistic world and you could navigate it like one.
Villedor's identity is much weaker in comparison, and it blatantly feels like a parkour sandbox. It's not a real place that could exist, it's a video game. You have a few stores and hospitals, and other than that, it's all generic skyscrapers and copy pasted houses with hollow interiors. Also, there are too many damn hospitals in the Central Loop. There are like 10 of them, but you don't see one school or police department or something.

I agree with some of your comment but you have to realise that this is only a chunk of the actual city. Harran had the entire city walled off. Villedor is walled off aswell but huge chunks of the city are bombed out. Do of course theres not every type of building that would be in a city (like schools and stuff)

Heavily agreed on the copy paste part. I just think that the map marking system could have been used for better functions, especially the binoculars itself could have played a better role in this situation

One thing to note regarding attention to detail: in Dying Light 1 when it's just a few minutes for night time, the zombies will all of them stare at the sunset. Possibly this is because at night, biters can become Night Walkers, but still this is a really cool minor detail that was scrapped in DL2.

This, it made for a great farm spot where you can have a ton of zombies in one spot. DL2 scrap is so valuable yet you have to scour every trashcan and every dark zone and still come up short. In fact, that's one thing I did notice in DL2 is that zombies don't drop materials, maybe a trickle here and there, just doesn't making farming fun at all.

  • @bbbutcher

It sounds stupid but one of my biggest let downs was the safe houses. I loved how a tiny area that you had to interact with (turn on the lights or move something etc.) turned into a somewhat cozy spot in the middle of the apocalypse. With DL2 it just didn’t feel the same at all. The game felt more like a strange reboot than a sequel that built on top of the first game.

My biggest issue is through levelling up .
In dl2 you have to go out of your way to go through all these different locations to level up through inhibitors.

      @theobnoxiousgamer9624 Рік тому +20

So many people bring this up and yet nobody really knows what they’re talking about. That feature is still present in DL2, it’s in the game. If you want to know where this room filled with side quest trinkets is, it’s literally under Harper at the fisheye. It also fills with other things you may encounter which includes Easter eggs as well. There’s even an area that’s completely boarded off but then opens and there’s a piano in it, or the mattress out on the balcony that later has teddy bears n such on it you can sit at. Given it’s kinda hard to tell what side quests add what to it. Do all the side quests and that room will be filled with lights and junk eventually, some you can tell which side quests, others not so much. You kinda just walk in and go… tf the chickens go? They got replaced with a fire place. Where’d these Christmas lights come from? Where’d this alien chicken from space sign come from? Was it always there?

I have to disagree with character development in DL2. Lawan's whole personality until the very end is mostly her saying "F you" more than anything, Hakon starts out as this nice companion, then turns into a Renegade obeying goon for a few missions before returning to save you (if you don't let him die earlier on). Having to constantly interact with characters, especially Lawan, which in no way have a good relationship with Aiden is just annoying to sit through.
Personally, i really think the parkour feels a lot better in DL2 as of now, even with the stamina meter. It just feels like you have endless moves to get around, really doubling down on what was built in DL1.
However, my biggest gripe with DL2 is the artstyle. The zombies, especially special infected, look too ...fantasy-esk? And the arstyle of bright glowing crystals, bright orange spit and colored veins on zombies just makes it feel too much like an alternative reality, rather than how 'realistic' the zombies were in DL1. Overall, nobody needed this silly grind to upgrade blueprints, armor stats, or the focus of activities that make you engage with night time. In DL1 you could do pretty much whatever, whenever (excluding volatile nests in The Following). In DL2 it feels so forced that during the day zombies aren't a threat at all - while during the night there's a volatile camping each and every rooftop now. It feels like the only reason to go into forsaken stores and such during the night is to gather materials to craft weapons that will only really be useful at night.
I don't necessarily dislike DL2, but especially after the inclusion of Dying Light Points and the game turning more and more into an RPG, i kind of see the game - and possible sequels - on downhill course that will be difficult to correct from.

    • @Aviatorzz
      @Aviatorzz Рік тому +20

Thank you for pointing it out, man. The artstyle just feels like a departure from the still somewhat believable designs in 1. Like, just compare the zombies between the two games.
      Volatiles (1) - visible muscle tearing from the extreme growth caused by their mutation, some pieces of muscle were completely exposed;
Volatiles (2) - some kind of bony carapace covering their entire body. The volatiles are the least extreme change in terms of special infected designs, and it does feel believable that they'd eventually start developing tougher armor to resist firearms, yo could even see it kind of forming with the alpha volatiles in 1 where they had shards sticking out of them.
Bombers (1) - the buildup of gas bloated their innards to the point of bursting which you could see as their guts hanging out, and the sounds to go along with them were revolting
Bombers (2) - completely covered in glowing translucent yellow cysts, that's it
Toad (1) - look human with the difference being their throats are swelled to the brim with stomach acid
Spitter (2) - lanky and with a slit for a mouth, with many glowing bits, this thing looks like a Necromorph Puker but worse
Revenant (2) - like something from Dark Souls
Biters/virals (1) - pale, rotting, leaking mucus and blood, but very human
Biters/virals (2) - inexplicably completely dry skin on most of them (and if that's because they've just been "living" for a long time- wouldn't they have starved to death by then if they're so malnourished looking? i don't think they'd look so husky), to the point of flaking off in the air like dust
Not only is the artstyle itself more cartoony but the designs are overall worse than the first game, which made sense in-lore and would still make sense in the newer strain instead of whatever they went with. Similar with the human designs but they aren't as obvious and jarring

When you open the door to step out into the storm on the Antenna quest, the animation of the wind, lightening, rain makes it feel like you are really in a storm.

I enjoy DL1 more than 2 because I prefer what it offers, but I don't hate DL2 or think it's a bad game, it's just not for me. That describes an issue I have with the dl2 perfectly. Dl1 just felt so real and it was creepy and chilling because of it. As well the design of DL2 in comparison to the original is just shockingly bad they fixed what wasn’t broken.
Personally I disliked the new dark ages theme because while cool it wasn’t realistic and wasn’t scary or intimidating with enemies.
The world of DL2 is absolutely beautiful but it isn’t what most would expect a city to look like 20 years after zombies took it over the trees on the rooftops were an over exaggeration. Something you’d see in a more cartoony game.
The world of dl1 is still amazing and great in certain times of day with lighting but the world felt dead you could find npcs telling their story on rooftops but in the sequel you would run through houses on top of already existing buildings, and people putting on plays in makeshift theatres? The whole world of dl2 just doesn’t scream horror.

      Zombie designs suck too
The original designs were fleshy monsters that you could just smell were rotting through the screen the volatiles had no skin and it was very body horror. The second game it’s all armoured designs just grey bland designs I still can’t tell if I’m getting chased by a viral or volatile. Or they’re covered in the bright yellow blisters… why? It’s not scary it looks silly and over designed and they made a dumb error when making the screamers not children in dl2. After replaying dl1 because of all the comments i see of people saying "the first game is so much better and feels more real" i can fully confirm that youre wrong. The slums are pretty good. Very well designed. But not enough verticality for a parkour game. Old town is a pile of shit. Feels like they took unused assets from dead island and used them to make a half assed second map to make the game seem bigger. And the game is obviously missing a ton of qol stuff that makes it almost unbearable to play compared to the second one. And the fucking menu. My god its fucking horrendous. I liked the aesthetics of the menus and stuff but the crafting menu and inventory menu were basically a reskin of dead islands menu but somehow even worse. Scrolling through the mods on controller could be a cia torture method. And the combat is definitely not better. After the combat updates in dl2 it undoubtedly has the best combat out of all dead island esque games (dead island 2 included). And the parkour of dying light 1 feels like an afterthought. Its not really fleshed out enough. The parkour physics in the first game suck. Mars gravity and terrible animations make it unsatisfying. And dl1 (on ps4) somehow runs worse than dl2 on ps4. Even on launch i was surprised at how much better the second game ran. To this day the still haven't fixed the terrible damn near constant screen tearing and insane lag spikes and frame drops from zombie hordes larger than like 18 or 24.

When you have to go up 3 floors in Harran while being chased, you scale walls, jump, slide, grab ledges etc, and the system flows together as a whole.
In dl2 they built the game with a heavy reliance on makeshift elevators to go vertical which actively stop your in your parkour to interact with the world, to be able to parkour again. Which once ontop if the rooftops, you're mostly safe anyways and parkour becomes pointless.

After nearly two years of updates there's still practically nothing to do in the endgame, the main story was unsatisfying and all over the place, 80% of the "sidequests" are just challenges pretending to be their own stories. Tons of cut content and broken promises just leave a sour taste.

There were certain parts of the story that i liked but in general it was just a cringe fiesta where everything felt unfinished, oh you see that character you got interested in? boom dead next act.
In the first game i only hated two characters: tolga and fatin, holy shit i hope their deaths were painful. The other characters for me were likeable or in the worst case scenario just meh, but in dying light 2 the only character i liked was aitor, there were some meh characters but most of them made me wish their deaths for one or other reason.
Combat in dying light 2 is better designed but combat in dying light 1 felt more satisfactory, you can really feel a grouth in your capabilities and become more and more strong until you are a demigod, in dying light 2 without glitched weapons i always felt like i was an old man in a bar fight.
I liked the infected from both games but liked demolishers from the original game a lot more.
    Dying light 2 crossbow rules!
    Dying light 1 hook rules!
Tolga and Fatin can eat my ass!

Airdrop, was actually a reason for me to notice time is passing in game of DL1. Unfortunately, DL2 does not have that and time really does not have a meaning in it. What was so good in dying light 1 for me was how night was basically suicide but it didnt scale with the player. By the time you are at the endgame, max level, best weapons and skilled at parkour, you can go out at night and fuck shit up. Its so gratifying to take what you would do anything to avoid all game and face it head on now at the top of your game.
In dying light 2 i would usually prefer to do missions at night for more experience. Further, by the time i reached the endgame and felt i was at that next level, nothing was really that different.
Also one thing you didnt mention was the air drops. By far my favorite random event that always had the thrill of get there fast and get crazy good rewards but beware if its almost night

You may mentioned it (I’m halfway through the video atm) but the one thing that bothered me the most in DL2 was that you can deadsmack 2 feet away from a PK base or Survivor base (depending on what you choose) and there’d be a fuckin pack of renegades right next to the base torturing a PK or survivor. Or times where you’ll see random survivors just relaxing by a fire and cage trapped survivor is screaming for help next to them. So much for tension and immersion

Dying light 2 is such a strange sequel, in almost all other cases developers take what works and improve on it but for some reason it feels like Techland threw everything out and started from scratch.
I can’t think of anything that feels genuinely improved compared to the first game and of course the most jarring was the melee combat being like a different series entirely, like how did they F that up so badly when they had nearly perfected it in the first game.
It’s baffling to me how they some how went backwards in most cases.

To me, the parkour in DL2 is too extreme and cartoonish. You move more like a superhero than a mere military guy, and that diminishes not only your immersion in the gaming world, but also lends a sense of power that reduces the fear you should have. In DL1 the parkour was more realistic - more reasonable - even if you never got winded. It's much scarier to limp around and have trouble climbing occasionally than it is to leap and swing effortlessly between buildings like you were bitten by a radioactive spider. I think DL1 is superior in every way and is a perfect zombie game. It is far more immersive and suspenseful.

Parkour is basically the only part of DL2 I have ever preferred over DL1. But when the game launched, I thought it was passable at least and had a shit tonne of room to improve.
There are aspects that are basically never going to be improved like the open-world design and the main story, but there are other areas techland have changed that I think has been for the worse.
Mainly the massive fucking grind in every damn aspect of the game. DL1 had the basic levels, and legend levels to grind, that was basically it. DL2’s content updates have either been fixing the broken shit, or adding more repetitive crap to grind, as well as nerfing half the shit in the game to make it grindier and grindier.
Techland want it to be a damn live-service game where players are on all day every day grinding bounties, cause that makes them more likely to check out the fucking DL point store.
I have been a follower of this series since DL1 launched, but Techland’s priorities are pretty clear. They want their cyberpunk/NMS redemption to support their dogshit live-service cashcow. No matter how much good stuff they add, I wholeheartedly have come to dislike this game more and more as techland have shown their priorities.
I think it’s pretty telling that the community for this game is pretty dead, as AussieGG pointed out, a game with an absurdly good parkour system has no speedrunning community whatsoever because Techland keep fucking up fun parts of the game for the sake of balance. Techland’s priority is making DL2 a cashcow, and they’ve been forced to add all the recent shit to recover from the DL point backlash.

The absolute best part of dying light 1 that they left out in the second game is being hunted by the Player controlled Hunters. When you have someone you play online with like a friend and you are about to be invaded by an apex predator whilst you are scavenging or exploring new things and then interrupted by this player controlled hunter gave a thrilling experience. My favorite thing i use to do in dying light 1 with my friend was being in the gas station with the gas tanks and throw them at the apex predator and tried escaping the Hunter. It’s something that honestly needs to be added back and i think the game would be perfect. The fact they made it to be “Less scary” drains the game of its life because what’s the point of a game like this? We honestly need the relentless pressure of dyling light 1 and the Be the zombie game mode back because the people who choose the be the zombie option don’t impede on your gameplay and you don’t have to select that game mode to be encountered by the Player controlled hunters. Something i would love to see. We would have a bigger community but maybe they are just trying to stall so they can release stuff over the years so the game doesn’t die out too quick but honestly they did so good with dying light 1 that i would have hope for dying light 2 to be just as good

Something I think not nearly enough people talk about are the zombie models between games. Let's take the Volatile as an example. In DL1, the Volatile looks horrifying. It's got exposed muscle, blisters everywhere, a gouged out stomach and just these little details that make it look fucked up. W
Meanwhile, from what I can see in DL2, they're about the same shape as the ones in DL1, but just grey all over. They still have most of the same features like the weird bisecting lower jaw and the hole in the stomach, but a lot of the finer details have been left out.
Also, who thought it would be a good idea to have a timer for during the night that insta-kills you? It's kinda dumb if you ask me since night time is often the thing players have to overcome in their playthrough, unlocking a whole new dimension with more risk but better rewards like double skill XP. To limit that time is dumb imo.

They made a truly open world, where you can legit go anywhere, with many interiors. I just think of like Far Cry where most buildings are just some static, unclimbable thing. It's honestly pretty damn remarkable. Especially the sequel with just the sheer size of it all.
