Let's not forget that Chris Columbus did Home Alone, so his experience with child actors really showed. He really was the perfect choice. Additionally, he picked John Williams who also worked with him on Home Alone to do the music for Harry Potter, and I think we can all agree that music was absolutely perfect.

Not necessarily. Hermione did a lot of exposition, since she'd read all about the magical world to prepare herself. In the 7th book, Harry notes his surprise that Ron knows a book Hermione's never heard of. And I never got the feeling that they dumbed Ron down, either - though that may be due to the fact I knew his character from the books.

@@sailiealquadacil1284 if you knew his character from the books you would agree that Ron was done dirty and dumbed down. Not only did they invent lines for Ron that made him appear ignorant or borderline arrogant, a lot of his good lines from the book were taken from him and given to hermione and sometimes harry.

@@sailiealquadacil1284 Uhm yes they did. He explained for example what "Mudblood" meant, since Hermione never heared of that. Thats she is upset about it is Filmonly, since in the Book she didnt knew what it was - only that it certainly was something Bad.
Hermione had a lot of Bookknowledge, but Ron had alot of "Life"-knowledge.
Plus they left aloooot of Ronmoments flat out of the Movies - sure it was timerestrains - but still. He got cheaped out alot, and theres some Interview where they even CONFIRMED they gave alot more to Hermione, than she had because she was the "smart" one - which ultimately let her tripped into the "Legolas-Effect".

I think I took the butchering of the 4th movie to heart cause it was the first book I actually read. I watched the first three movies. After watching the third in theaters I was HOOKED and couldn’t wait for the next movie so immediately went to the store and bought the 4th book and read it in like 2 days and I couldn’t wait for the movie. I remember following every single film update on mugglenet religiously. And then when it finally came to the big screen I just felt so betrayed. The movie atmosphere was different from the first three, so much of the plot was changed and left out. I just couldnt believe it, I felt so betrayed lol

17:44 I think the reason they made Ron the panicky one during the devil’s snare scene is because the potions riddle chamber was cut, which in the book is where Hermione gets her moment to shine. In the film there are only three chambers: devils snare, the winged keys and the chessboard, and each of the trio takes the lead role in one of them. It makes that whole sequence in the film much more balanced

Also when Columbus established a colony on Hispaniola he enslaved the native Caribs, treated them with the utmost cruelty, gave the women and girls as sex slaves to his men, and even cheated his men out of the money they had earned on the voyage.

He has done an absolutely fantastic job creating the Harry Potter world on screen. And we won't ever get a better director again. I always loved about this film how faithful it was to the book, and how perfect the casting was for the characters. Liek Richard Harris as Dumbledore couldn't be more perfect. And the child actors also did an amazing job considering their age and the experience they did or actually didn't have. The picked the best director to bring this book to film to life. He kept it magical when it needed it to be and he kept it as true to the books as possible. Also keeping him on for CoS was great also. But its was very important to kick off the movie series off in his vision. It kept these films in a serious tone with a perfect show in introducing the characters that bleed into CoS. Columbus knocked it out of the park. Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets are still movies I can watch at any point if on tv. I agree with u Goblet of Fire just had me pulling my hair out! GoF was my favorite book and that director took a piss on it in every way. As soon as the Quidditch Worldcup was not shown I knew we as fans of the books were in trouble... I could recite it line by line - I was OBSESSED. this movie immediately transports me right back to my childhood.

Even though I completely agree that the rest of the films turned Ron into the comic relief character, I think what the first film did (with the Devil's Snare scene) was actually really clever. In the book, the path to the Philosopher's Stone has more challenges than in the film, which allow for each character to show their strengths. In the adaptation, they kept just three (after Fluffy the cerberus, of course): in the Devil's Snare, they show Hermione's strengths, which are studying and spellcasting. In the next scene with the winged keys, they show Harry's flying skills, who catches the key needed to open the door. And in the final challenge, Ron proves his dexterity, strategic talent and courage as well, with the chess scene. Ron wins the game and is not afraid of sacrificing himself. Even Dumbledore himself in the end awards him points for playing the "best chess game" in all of Hogwarts' years. So, I disagree that the Philosopher's Stone film does Ron dirty, as the Devil's Snare scene is needed for Hermione to show her own abilities. However, as I said in the beginning, I totally agree that Ron ended up being amost the most useless and needlessly dumb of the three in the rest of the series, especially after the third one. Anyway, that is my take. To anyone that actually went through all this, thank you for your time and hope you are doing well, especially these days!

I love your movie reviews and all the essays and compilations and lists you make about what is one of my very favourite franchises. They teach me a lot of the franchise that I had previously not been aware of, and my gratitude for that is immense.
But in your review of specifically why this is the perfect introduction to the movie-adaptation of the franchise that (literally) set the stage, you have missed a critically important aspect of the movie that not only turned this masterpiece motion picture itself into magic, but also helped to shape the atmosphere and sow the seeds from which part of the success of the franchise has flourished. It is also an aspect that intrinsically harboured the possibility for each of the other movies to be perceived as darker than its predecessor right from the off.
    The music.

So do I, wonder if he said the books were better than the Movies, or would say one of them are his least favorites, because in my opinion I think my Least favorite is The Hobbit Trilogy, one: they changed the age rating, two: it's feels like it more violent and three: the characters look nothing like the books description but at the same time I love, there are good things that make it stand out, I love how they show Gollum again, I love the song in the chapter an unexpected party in the movie also, and my favorite is how they show the powers of the Ring, I mean sure The Hobbit Book seemed Underrated because there was some violence here and there, but I think The Book and the Video game is better.

One thing I really like about your videos on the Harry Potter films is that they make me see the films in a different light. I would never have thought about the film-making aspects - and what makes the moves so good (or not) - in such depth if it weren't for your videos. You present the films in a very engaging and thought-provoking manner and even when I disagree with some of your views, I can understand where you are coming from.
Basically a long way of saying thank you.

In my opinion this is the best movie when it comes to being an adaptation of a book. Now yes, there are better HP movies, but here I can barely think of one big thing that they missed from the book (Snape’s Puzzle) and that wasn’t even THAT big. Everything important is here, also since it’s the first movie, it was the one that most people saw, and when I first saw the beautiful visuals I was so amazed! I love this movie, and although it isn’t even close to the best one, this is still one of the best live action movies of all time.

This made me return from the time HP was introduced to me. I was so young then, and would like to see more about magic as it's about a young wizard. But I became a fan. Chris Columbus is the right director for the introduction of the franchise as it captured the wonder of HP. As the characters mature, so as I. There are other really good movies but the HP series is my most favorite - childhood, despair, family, friendship, politics, mental health, architecture, classics, and love. I still live in HP universe and that's the magic that I have found.

I don’t want to start anything, but I don’t understand why people are so bothered by it being called Sorcerers Stone? Like they were just trying to make it sound more appealing to more people? What’s the harm in that? When I was 11 the word Philosopher would have sounded so boring, but the word Sorcerer sounded more magical. Again, I don’t want to start anything I just don’t know why it’s such a big deal 😂
