Thanks for making this comparison. You nailed it about the cask quality. The new version using seasoned sherry cask is not going to match the old day sherry cask imported from Spain. I had 1992 and it was gone while still keeping 1996 unopened. I am still enjoying 2016 or may be 2017 release and has been thinking of getting a new release like 2023 to compare. Even that 2016 or 2017 bottle the nose is amazing and beats other 18yr bottles in a blind I did with friends (GMorangie18, Oban18, Springbank18, Glenfiddich18, GL18, HPark18, Laphroaig18 and even 2016 bottling Glendronach18). However on the palate, it comes down to individuals it was a toss up between GDronach18 and Laphroaig 18. Anyhow, back in the day I spent less than $200 for MC18 (I think less than $150 way back). I hate to pay the overpriced just to satisfy my curiosity. So this video is great! Thanks again.

Like you said Cam, at $350+ it has to be a special bottle. There are many 18 year old sherry bombs out there for a lot less scratch. GD18 is a great choice, for one. Heck, for that money you can go all the way up to GD21

Can you do a video on your bunkered bottles? Would love to see what you guys are storing away for years later; bonus points if you show your storage setup for the bottles!

Hey Cam...Great video!...The older Mac 18 is very similar to Yamazaki 18. Agree that neither are worth the money. Glad to be able to enjoy whiskey again with you. My reflux is better after being away for a while.

I was given a 2018 black box and I would never pay the price of anything after the purple box Macallan's. It smelled ok, tasted good and was smooth. The problem, it was not complex and had a very short finish. There is so much better for half or less the price. Macallan & Dalmore are number 1 & 2 overpriced scotch bottles out their. I do have a unopened Macallan 1995 for a special occasion. Older scotch is better, because their were better available casks. Great review.

I agree completely. I was a Macallan fan for many years, but the quality is not near what it once was and no longer buy the brand. The Glendronach 18 blows it out of the water for a lot less money.

Go back to releases from 1998 which means it was distilled in 1980. I paid 75 dollars for those. The biggest difference in case you didn't know is sherry casks vs sherry seasoned casks. Macallan changed their barrel aging from true sherry casks from Jerez to casks that held sherry for a short period of time in order to "season" the casks. The true ex sherry casks became way too expensive to keep the whiskey price affordable. I visited the distillery years ago and it was unbelievable the change in whiskey flavors. You will never see the Mac 18, 15, 21 etc like I did from the late 1980s to 1990s. The last bottle of Mac 18 I had was from 1999 and the sherry flavors were unbelievable. Nothing today compares to those bottles.

2012 is where Macallan and Highland Park changed direction with Edrington. It's a shame

Buy it to gift and not for yourself. Got it 👍
Have actually never bought a MacCallan for myself yet. The price/presentation ratio to too far out of wack for my interests.
Thanks for the bougie review Cam

Macallan has become a luxury brand, living off its past glory and pricing that is aimed at gift giving for folks who only drink scotch occasionally and want a well known label and a big age statement. Old bottles (80s/90s) do very well at auction, but most serious scotch enthusiasts have abandoned the brand due to its current pricing and presentation (chill filtered, color added, 43% abv instead of 46%). They also built a new distillery in 2018 that is likely to change the profile in the future and is very glitzy by scotch distillery standards.

What are your thoughts on Highland Park 18 Viking Honour??

Great question! Would love to see a video comparing the old style (pre-Viking pride bottling) to current Highland Parks. I think the old style 18yr HP is awesome! The new Viking ones, not so much. Also, they are all in clear glass and the color difference is pretty noticeable old vs new….

      older Hp 18 is good

It is quite ok on the palate and the price is great comparing to many other 18. It isn't sherry bomb with subtle hint of oak and peat. it is a bit thin on the mouthfeel but the bourbon cask did provide creamier, fresher profile comparing to all sherry cask aged single malts. The nose is nothing to be too excited. My HP Valkyrie beats the new HP18 on the nose hands down. Unfortunately, It is discontinued for many years now. I imagine the older HP18 bottle would be much better than the new Viking Honor.
