Today we are documenting a Research + Development Gibson SG that was essentially used as a Prototype for what became the "SG Select" the following year. This was a guitar used for testing purposes at Gibson and didn't leave the factory "complete." It was sold at an employee only sale essentially as a husk with just a few parts on it and completed at a later date.

Trogly we are all very excited for the huge Gibson order
That is an insanely good looking sg. That darker cherry finish makes such a huge difference
Too bad the fretboard isn't darker.
It was never sanded and buffed, that is why the grain can be seen and felt. It was sprayed in clear gloss as a RND sample.
THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL SG.
That guitar has stunningly beautiful wood.
I liike it!! Been an SG fan since day 1. (1985)
I think Gibson should have used a darker rosewood or ebony for that SG's fretboard.
That flame figuring is fierce! Wasn't crazy about how the fretboard looked, but definitely looked better after you conditioned it.
What a beautiful SG!
Too bad that lovely SG got stuck with such a light colored rosewood fretboard. The finish looks great though. Even with the flamed top, I still prefer the pickguard on an SG. The Supremes without look weird. That guitar likely sat around unfinished for years and when they finally decided to get rid of it they used current parts.
I noticed that about the neck too.
WOW! If I had the money, I'd love to have this. It looks amazing.
That SG is GORGEOUS… That’s a keeper, Trogly
I really hate the look of sg's without a pickguard
Love the chime sound.
Just got a 2018 SG special with 24 frets and Firebird pickups. Natural satin finish. Didn’t know in 2016 and 2018 SGs got these pickups (an HP, and a T in 2016, no extension on the fretboard though), just random finds on reverb.
It's pretty obvious why it never made it to public sale because of the wavy finish. the seller should have disclosed about it being purchased as a tusk.
About the pickguard: I think that that wood is so striking that one should hide nothing, but those holes need something. I propose a clear, transparent pickguard which would allow the proper use of the holes and reveal the dark cherry glory beneath.
Beautiful!
You sometime talk about the SG body difference through time but i don't see it. Could be nice to make a video about the evolution of the SG body shapes and carves!
that is gorgeous!
That thing is beautiful
I kinda like the sunburst-looking effect the headstock veneer has around the crown inlay.
Love that finish, so pretty
Stunning top. Really brings out how beautiful of a design the SG is to start with.
Not usually a fan of SG’s but this one…wow. I love that one. Amazing.
Got to love the looks of that SG. Would've loved to see it in a darker yellow or a burnt orange with the same kind of flames.
Maple has undulating grains, it's like slicing an uncooked ramen noodle bundle the long skinny way in to 2 skinnier noodle slices, then looking at the fresh cut surfaces and the light vs dark chattoiance is the spots where the noodles are either cut closer to the bottom of the wave or closer to the top of a wave, so seeing some tips and seeing some ends, but with maple it's way smaller and more dense noodles, similar to how carpet can get brushed one direction and have spots in places that are pushed over the other direction and what your seeing is looking down the end of a strand vs the side of the tip of a strand, they reflect different amounts of light, if you move it flip flops as you move to where the ones that pointed away now point toward you, same with moving the maple guitar to see the flame move, your changing which cut off noodle ends are pointing at you vs pointing away from you, the differences in direction of reflections of light from those differently angled surfaces changes as you move and appears "flamey" or to have chattoiance. I've been eager to use the ramen noodle analogy, it helped me a lot to think of it that way....look very closely at the waves in the flamey maple, deeper, deeeeeepeeeerrrrr! Lols.
I have an early '08 Select (72nd day of 08). End of the run. Dark Cherry and flame up the wazoo, especially on the neck. Excellent and rare guitars. I've heard rumors of 200 Cherry, 200 Natural, and 200 Trans Black. But with Gibson's all you can usually find are rumors. I paid $1750 from a pawn shop about 5 years ago. You are correct that they ran for 2007 and a few months into 2008. I know somebody with one stamped 2006. And you're also correct on the finishing of the cherry guitars. Black grain fill sanded back and then painted cherry. It's why they're so dark. The truss rod cover was gold metal with SG engraved in it.
Another interesting thing is that most I've seen, including mine, have that lighter, streakier rosewood board and the yellowed binding. It's sucks that we can't post photos in these comments.
dude should of gotten a clear pick guard!!! I def. recommend u so the same. It will just look so much better. Or order a similar looking Flame/Curly Maple P. Gaurd. I believe it will make it look amazing with either one. I wonder if a Master or Master+ grade Quilt Maple P. Gaurd would look awesome with the Curly Maple? That would be a neat idea.
It might be covering a bit of that great top, but I think it works with the pick guard.
Me too, looks like 75 or 76 without guard, sg needs a guard to make it finished looking, give it a handedness; gives it an upside and a downside and defined boundaries via contrast n makes it more guitar looking, no guard is like Rick flair without the Whooo!
Fabulous looking but hideous lacquer job... Needs flat sanding and re polishing. Not sure it is super thin, certainly doesn't look like it, it could just have build up on the harder grain...even if it is I would sand it and re shot the nitro...... That thing would absolutely beam with a decent polish.
Now that's an SG 👍🤘
So much maple. Love it.
That’s a beauty.
"It's New Electronics Research and Development Camp." - Freddie Benson, 2011.
Really like the neck pickip
Check out Elwood's 17 string Bass from ZZ Top.
Gorgeous
Amazing,
Your show keeps getting better and better. Love your craft
Omg it’s stunning!! Woweewoowah🥰!!! Thanks Trogly, great back story, thanks for sharing & hope you’re well!
Planning on buying an Gibson SG HP 2016 that I think has the same pickups this one has.
I dig all the different employee personnel mod guitars, how cool would that be to get away with making your own one day!
Holy Chit that is one crazy flamed SG !...I LOVE it !...and I like that it has a pickguard , Ide like to get an SG one/some day ...Thanks Trog !
Gorgeous guitar. The neck got acceptable after you oiled it up but it's unfortunate that they didn't sand the body enough before finishing it. You could probably take the pick guard off and just put the screws back in the holes to show off more of that gorgeous wood.
Salutations Austin!
Absolutely beautiful SG!
I think I would prefer to install a set of 57 Classic pickups with the four (4) conductor wires and push/pull pots for coil splitting and phase switching too.
It sounds good the way it is now, but I really like the 57 Classic pickups.
I also think I would swap the pick guard out with a transparent one to show off the beautiful wood grain, possibly even a transparent one with an amber tint, for a little extra color.
Apparently, someone already purchased this beautiful instrument, because I couldn’t find it anywhere on your website.🙁
Thank you for sharing and posting this video with us all!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!
☀️✨🎸
I used to build those boards in NC, the company I worked for was hired to mass produce these. I have a prototype in my epiphone SG.
They totally should’ve went with the Ebony fretboard and two pieces of walnut between the three piece maple neck 😔😔😔😔😔
I love it.
That’s a gorgeous wee thing huh 🥰
The one in the natural finish 👌🏼
Wow! That's a beauty even though it was pieced together.
Gibson cherry wazoo flame figure SG select.🎸✅
I wonder if Angus would like that flame finish?
I like it.
I don't even like SG guitars and I think that's a beautiful guitar. The pick guard looks good on it but I would have preferred no pick guard as the top is incredible. Sounds great too.
I can only dream of owning an SG like this. The cherry or the natural, preferably both!
I don't even like sg's , but damn that one sounds like a tele.awesome!
Wow that fretboard got so much darker after you oiled it.
Seriously!!! That neck is sick
Beautiful SG very "tigery" 🐅 looking!
SG’s need the big pickguard for me personally. The flame throughout this guitar is nice though.
Thanks for covering this model! I bought a natural Select this past April. I agree- the neck feels pretty huge but the flame is beautiful!
Aside from the color, the body figuring reminds me of tiger ep.
That fkers sick 😮
My 2010 standard has the thinnest finish but absolutely no hint of the stickiness if you get a bit clammy like my studio or my goldtop... 2010 was at least a good year for lacquer
That's actually a 5 piece flame maple neck if you think about it.
Yup, no one ever includes the headstock wings. Sad…. :(
\m/, ,\m/ :)
SG always looks better with a scratch guard. IMO
Yes
yeah i love this tiger stripe boi with that deep red. killer looking rig!
I like it. Now we need Epiphone to do one.
This guitar speaks to me! I want it!!
Wonder if it'd be worth a refinish.
That's one of those "AAARRRGGGHHH" situations. Maybe throw some Bustbuckers in there while you're at it.
lol, totally@@seanhammer6296
a drop dead gorgeous factory prototype for $1000 - Mercy sakes alive!!!!
A comment from one of the Gibson workers said these were “Factory Mistakes” due to installing pick guards that weren’t supposed to be installed. So, they sold them in-house instead of scrapping them. :)
@@Iam_Dunn - yeah Trogly said that in the vid
Just put a clear pickguard and it will be perfect 😊
they should have put ebony fretboard on it or something darker
This SG Select red flamed maple looks totally gorgeous, but the 490 pickups are brighter with less mids than my dual blade minis in an all hog SG body. I guess I have to stick to hog.
Damn! I absolutely love that. What's something like that cost?
I’d anticipate an SG select to be in the 3-5k ish range
The finish on the SG looks weird on my monitor
Cool top .i woula liked it 19 years ago
put a clean pick-guard on it.
That guitar is freaking beautiful
$1000? Yeah, Gibson today would complete the guitar and sell it for $3999. at the demo shop.
How was the neck dive? None?
Is it for sale? What is the asking price? Its just gourgous. I want it... It is not evil looking at all. Just awesome.
The rosewood should have been much darker to match the rest of the guitar.
Wow. I might be the biggest SG fan on this planet. This would be my dream guitar. Wow wow
Imma LP guy myself. I’ve always been a bit too fat to not suffer from the dreaded “neck dive”. LOL
\m/, ,\m/
I'm pretty sure that's the SG Standard body shape. The only difference between the Standard and the 61 Reissue is the way the neck joins the body. I like the Standard better, they don't neck dive as much.
9:20 …. “They paint it black” … They actually use aniline dyes to stain the wood. :)
put a clear pickguard on it
I wish they would’ve used ebony on the fretboard.
That rosewood fretboard almost looks maple
Is it neck dive?
ALL SG’s neck dive. One of the reasons I dislike them so much… LOL :)
Sold already??
I was going to get it!
Feel free to email me about it - I decided not to post it for public sale
👍
Well done Andy, you made the podium for today and earned a Silver Medal.
@@sgt.grinch3299 Cheers Sgt
I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap Supreme to put a pickguard on one and it's nice to see I was correct it would look awesome
Who else wants to see a guitar made from Troglys unpacking table top . . .
You certainly need to dye that fretboard, but nice SG.
spendy but wow
The seller failed to disclose a heck of a lot about this guitar before the sale.
ya i am surprised it's not a issue.must have been a good price.
Basically a "parts" guitar is how I'd describe it....still a sweet looking ride!
I’m in.
You made the podium for today and earned a Bronze Medal.
Z is for late. I can’t believe I’m late for this beautiful SG. A dream guitar.
JAMES SCOTT NICHOLSON,ONTARIO, CANADA 🇨🇦 I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO PULL OUT THE FIRST DOUBLE CUT ACOUSTIC, MAN I HAVE WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD SOUND LIKE 🤔💨....
JUST AN IDEA 💡...MY KINDA T.V. I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE TROGLY SHIRTS WITH MY SLOGAN, I JUST WANT A COUPLE SHIRTS. TROGLY’S GUITAR SHOW🎸 WITH MY KINDA T.V. AT BOTTOM.
See if Gibson made an SG like that as a standard model with that color and that strong flame, I'd be all over it. All the other SG's seem to have thin flames we I personally hate
4:47 The guy said he bought the guitar in 2014 without changing a thing? I beg to differ! 🤔
