I grew up in Downey, right next to Pico Rivera. Then moved to Whittier and remember the Night Stalker very clearly. I was 25 years old when he was terrorizing Los Angeles. We locked our doors and windows and we had no air conditioning! Gil, I have been following you and have appreciated all the talent and effort you gave to the citizens of So. Ca. You are very intelligent, hard working yet charmingly self depreciating. A total class act. Thank you for getting Ramirez off the streets.

@Suzanne Martin. Why are you glorifying this Carillo guy? He did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to apprehend ramirez. NOTHING AT ALL except stay way too many steps behind ramirez. He said he needed ramirez to kill again in order to have a better chance of arresting him. So what if he talks charming and entertaining...this fraud was not instrumental in the capture at all. Even on the East Coast we were scared of him. I was eight years old and I was afraid. My parents (and teachers) had to keep reassuring us kids that he was all the way in CA and that it was thousands of miles away. A lot of the men were saying let him come to NY we'll send him back to CA in a body bag. In the 80's NYC was a helluva tough stop. Unfortunately and ironically one of his first known victims was from Brooklyn, NY. I remember one of the local news tation did a segment about her. She moved to CA to get a from the cold, crime and be around her son. Sadly this elderly lady ended up being one of the victims of one of the most vicious serial killer. Truly sad.

Only a story about the Night Stalker could get me to even sniff in the vicinity of this channel. What's stunning is that it's the very philosophy driving institutions like the LA Public Library, that gives rise to sociopaths like Ramirez. No right or wrong, destruction of innocence, the shedding of innocent blood, and the destruction of homes and families. Ramirez perfectly embodied this philosophy, yet we call him a monster. That should tell us something about the utter evil of what has now become the thinking of places like LA, San Francisco, Oregon, Illinois, and New York. This country is imploding right before our very eyes.

Gil has been eating out on this case for decades but it's really not clear why. Frank Salerno was the lead detective in LA. However, even this is irrelevant really because it was great work by the cops in San Francisco that identified Ramirez - and just a few days after he struck there. The cops in LA had been on the case for 5 months and were nowhere.
Gil also comes across as a narcissist and a misogynist. He sets every story up with himself as the central character and talks as if he's a deep thinking, insightful genius - then waits for the interviewer to say as much.
And he continually talks about his wife like she's some silly little woman who couldn't possibly understand anything. In this clip he actually says he wanted to beat her. What a pig of a man. Full of his own self-importance. That wedding story gets more grandiose each time he tells it!
Gil Carillo didn't apprehend the Night Stalker. San Francisco police and the general public caught him. Gil had been on the case for 5 months and had failed. San Francisco police cracked it in a couple of weeks.

You know what.. I was thinking everything you just said when I watched night stalker. He is part of the problem with glorifying these killers by adding humour to the stories and almost boosting their reputation.
When I watched the documentary, I was thinking how average the police work actually was considering how many clues were left and personal encounters.
They knew about the shoe early on and that is was black…
They also knew about his teeth and smell from being practically homeless and still couldn’t narrow it down.
They are really riding on the success of other people on this case and claiming all the praise for it.
Thoughts go out to all of the victims families and the survivors.

It was a combined effort. It was the shoe print that ultimately linked the crimes together. He had a fence that he would sell the stolen items from the crime scenes who ended up giving up Richard’s full name. It was only a matter of time as to when he would be caught. Little by little Richard left clues behind. The finger prints they found on the car he ditched helped ID him too. The kid in Orange County who got the partial license plate was a big help too. So many things finally came together and the evil fucker’s time was up.
