New subscriber here, majoring in psychology at Sinclair Community College. Thank you for your helpful videos! Even as I’m finishing my associate degree, I still feel so clueless. ( I want to be a child therapist)😅
Hope this helps a bit. Im An Art therapy Grad student currently in my 2nd year, Masters program. If I could give my past self any advice. It would be, get good grades in under grad although is I found the learning vedy boring they help you get into Masters program (more choices). Start reading on your free time about different modalities, like (CBT, DBT).They are tools therapist use with clients. coming into grad school with knowledge on them will not hurt you trust me specially during clinicals. Figure out populations later when your have more knowledge. most likely your mind will change through exp and the grad school process. That's ok! If children are your population of interest then Play therapy is is something Ive seen a lot of clinicians use. Is a solid place to start reading on. Watching UA-cam videos and getting extra info is also a great way to learn! In this field you never stop learning. There is always something new from clients or books, or research. Be open and ready. (The school process goes by very fast be sure to enjoy it!) Hope this helps a bit best of luck!
Great video, thanks for the updated version! I have a bachelors but really think therapy is my calling. I also happen to be from ohio. Do you think the job market is biased in terms of where you went to school as it is in many other fields? I'd really like to just focus on going to a school i can afford (i am also from ohio) that is good quality. Thanks again!
LISW-S here! I know some states have different requirements for social workers. I believe it’s PA & FL, but that my of changed. But with a bachelors you can still become a LSW, you can’t do therapy obviously. But some jobs do have preference over licensed vs. non licensed bachelors.
Hi Allyssa, love your videos, really helping me in my grad school journey. I’ve been really considering enrolling into a LPC program, but I’m having a hard time thinking of putting so much money and time into a career that could not be sustainable for me income wise, I’m really passionate about the work, but I worry about the statistics I see online for rates, do you have any advice after being the in the field and working?
Yes! A couple of things come to mind, firstly would you be interested in private practice...it is IMO the most sustainable way to be a therapist...if not I would think about what is drawing you to the field and if that could be found in other avenues such as the medical field or another helping profession that pays better.

No I don't think employers care in the least where you went...all they want you to have is the correct licensure.
