Hey just wanted to say since this video is still popping off that some of the things I've said here I've changed my mind about quite a bit. Malenia would now make it to the amazing tier, though near the bottom of it. Hoarah Loux/Godfrey is my favorite boss now. Mohg would also make a solid amazing tier fight for me. I'd also put Rykard in great tier, and Astel in good. Other than that I am based and everything I say is real and true until I change my mind

@Sérgio Sérgio because even though he was born with a curse and largely imprisoned by the Greater Will, he still makes it his mission to protect the Erdtree, fighting your character potentially three times. He’s also the only one who didn’t go to war with his siblings in a desperate grab for power. People say Ranni is the nicest, but really I think it’s Morgott (Ranni not only indirectly started the war but also assassinated a Demigod and started the Black Knives, which ultimately killed Blaidd and Iji,) she isn’t very honorable

I've heard a theory that Malenia's fight was actually the scrapped Lady Tomoe boss fight from the Sekiro dlc that never happened. It kinda makes sense. If she was meant to be a Sekiro boss then a lot of her attacks would be WAY more manageable since you could just deflect them.

    • @Jackenack
      @Jackenack 2 роки тому +45

I don't think in her current form she would be very reasonable in Sekiro, either, though... there is no "tell" for each individual hit within the flurry combo itself, most of the hits are just represented by a giant AoE group of slash marks around her. Of course, that could've been changed, though.
Honestly, I don't think the boss would be as ridiculous if they just scaled down (or reduced the tracking ability of) the flurry attack. Every other attack she has is extremely predictable and easy to counter in some way. Not to mention how easy it is to stagger her. It's just unfortunate that she has this innate RNG sort of embedded into her fight, if you take a swing at her during her attack recovery there is a chance she will begin her flurry combo. And if she does that, there is a very high chance you won't be able to sprint away in time.

Morgott had potential to blow all the other bosses out of the water. His only issue is he doesn't have enough health. If you thoroughly play through the game before going to the capital, you end up stomping him before the fight has really begun. For a boss guarding the erdtree and lord of the capital he deserved more respect from players, forcing them to get good and learn his moves. I'm glad I went directly there after Rennala and fought him around lvl 50. Most others I've watched are over lvl 100 by the time they get to the capital and his second phase would last like 15 seconds.

agreed with Malenia. Her flurry attacks took awhile to figure out, but when you can deal with it consistently and beat it her, it feels nice. I think people complain about the attack because it's very hard to deal with if you dont have spacing or don't use a shield. But the fight itself as a whole, is really good.

And she forces me to go ranged, shield or use the bloodhound ashes of war, cause a close range its close to impossible to get through that attack without damage. And thats to be honest pretty bad boss design. And its such a shame, i love all her other attacks. Rennala was definitely my favorite boss, in a game full of incredible boss fights!
Here’s the thing: FromSoft has struggled to do a proper magic-based boss fight for years, and the closest they’ve come is ds3’s crystal sage which was mediocre at best (and don’t even get me started on bosses like Moonlight Butterfly or Pinwheel).
First off, there’s the run up. Raya Lucaria is one of my favorite legacy dungeons in the game, both in terms of visual and mechanic design. Walking through this former center of learning, now fallen into ruin is so atmospheric! After defeating several magic based mini-bosses over the course of this huge dungeon, you know something big is coming at the end, and boy does the game deliver.
Rennala, both mechanically and visually, has so much love poured into her that it’s insane. A few people find phase one boring, but it does a good job of creating an interesting mob fight (another thing FromSoft has tried before and failed at). It’s a puzzle where you need to balance positioning and speed or risk taking massive damage. This really kept me engaged, and is a nice change of pace from most bosses which boil down to dodge, strike, repeat.
From an atmosphere perspective, phase 1 really stands out as well, both visually and sonically.
Then we get to phase 2 and goddamn. I think phase 1 is great for what it is, but phase 2 is really what puts it up there with best bosses in the series imo. Rennalas constant movement and her HUGE pool of spells really keep you on your toes. Closing the distance is the name of the game here and she makes it tough to land more than a couple hits. However the fight is designed fairly, and openings are consistent, without any shenanigans that bosses pull later in the game when it comes to combo-canceling, inconsistent punishes, or unfair rollcatches. Of course the arena, the music and the visual design of her spells are just a treat to watch. The ash summons are a nice touch, increasing the difficulty and driving home how powerful Rennala really is. The time limit and Rennala’s slight passivity during the summons makes it so that they don’t feel unbalanced like other ganks in the game.
Many find this boss easy, but not me for some reason. Maybe it’s because I specced partly into magic which doesn’t have much effect on her. Maybe it’s cause I’m a fairly defensive combatant. I died to her a LOT. Way more than bosses later in the game. It always felt fair when I died though, and I could always trace my death back to a mistake I made (in contrast with a boss like Malenia or Malekith for example which half the time felt like the game just said ‘fuck you’).
To be fair, I ended up shredding bosses like morgott and fortissax with my magic later on, and it’s so interesting how much your build can influence bosses! This is probably a big reason I rank her highly, while to more melee-focused builds, she’s an afterthought.
If I ranked bosses on presentation alone, Rennala would easily be number one, up there with placidusax. As it stands, because of her presentation, innovative design, huge success at capturing an enemy archetype that FromSoft has struggled with, and hard but fair difficulty, I think I can make a solid argument for putting her in the top 5 if not the top 3.
I apologize for accidentally writing an essay. If you read this far, thank you! and I want to have a threesome with you and Rennala ;)

I think Mohg was my favorite in the game. From the first time you enter Nokron, you can see the pantheon on top of the cliff and you already know that's going to be a boss. The buildup of nearing it as you traverse the upper levels of the city, until you finally reach manage to reach it through the Haligtree path.
Very rarely do you actually encounter true evil in these sorts of games. But having Mohg pretty much rape his brother in order to create an army to invade the lands between falls into that category. The buildup at the start as he addresses you, his visual design looking like a great demon king, the music slowly increasing as you walk towards each other at the beginning until he just starts tearing into rifts of formless gods and using their blood as weapons. The ominous counting in latin as you whittle him down.
    TLDR: I like Mohg

This game is chock full of fantastic bosses though, Morgott, Godrick, Mohg, Maliketh, Malenia, Placidusax, etc. Some have said the boss quality of this game is low (I assume they mean main story bosses) and I can't help but disagree. The only main boss I truly consider bad is Godskin Duo, the rest go from good to contenders for the best bosses in the series. Also supposedly Maliketh got his speed toned down a bit in the recent patch so you may have gotten your wish. By the way, I do adore Morgott, but it is absolutely hilarious to me that his "genius" secret identity was naming himself Margit and making his sword into a stick. His presentation is admirable, a severely wounded, ancient and powerful being that is trying to heal out of time, but because it is transcribed so well in the fight, the fight itself loses a lot of rythm because he has these instances where he just swipes an arm, breathes a bit of fire and then oddly waddles around while you strike him for 4-6 consecutive hits, and I did that with the slow ass giant mace.

I never had a problem rolling through Waterfowl Dance after about 5 attempts, and even the 2nd phase version with the clones isn't impossible to dodge. She's incredibly difficult and you gotta be almost perfect, but it's still very fair and doable

I’m not really a musical person, but music makes or breaks the game for me. Sometimes the music can save a shitty fight or lessen the damage dealt by the gameplay (looking at godskin duo).

IMO Malenia has the best visual design of this game but the fact that she recovers her health is what makes her not being a completely awesome boss. the feeling of losing your progress is never satisfying to anyone. and the dance attack makes it worse by healing herself almost completely if she doesnt ends up killing you, the only way to completely dodge it is by hoping you stay out of range, which most of the time is not the case with a melee build. Even if you block her attacks with a shield she keeps healing,, like come on man.... Nice idea but bad execution

Fighting Godfrey and watching the host and second summon die to the stomps while you're jumping over them is also great fun. Placidusax is absolute perfection in terms of spectacle to me. I do think that Morgott is a great boss, but my favorite boss may go to Godfrey or Radagon/Elden Beast. Now hear me out. I know so many people hate the Elden Beast with a burning firey passion, but I honestly had a good time fighting that boss. The glowing orb move is op though, and they should nerf it. But the bosses moves, arena and music are all a marvel. Also its design is great. The moves were (mostly) easy to predict with time, and the running from the boss that plagued so many people was at a minimum for me for a majority of my encounter with it. But as Magicat said, Radagon carries the fight regardless. The epic music, the god that we had been hearing about for the entire game right in front of us (Well, the male version of Marika lol), And the god that caused the fracture and also built the elden ring itself. The boss design is awesome, and it is a great conclusion to the game, facing the very force(s) that you heard about. But even after that, I still think Godfrey is my favorite. I have a weakspot for older generations/legends fighting the upcoming generation, and this guy nails that perfectly. The way he honors you, the power he shows, the challenge he gives you to prepare you for what is still to come, from one elden lord to another. He is great.

I thought the two final fights, as a pair, were absolutely wonderful. Ultra epic, great level of difficulty (not too easy, not Melania), and the music for both is wonderful. I also like the two phases being so different. I actually like the moments where I'm chasing after the beast, though, mainly because that's the time you get to take in the music + scenery. Probably my favorite in the game, although Margott was great too.
