Should have done the official studio version. The music video removes the entire beginning and first verse of the song. It's gorgeous, you would have loved it.
I hate the official music video for this exact reason. It ruins the atmosphere of the song.
Yes, for sure, this version is like a radio edit, i hate when great music or art gets chopped up or censored, it should NEVER hapen
@@zenunesmartinsno doubt. Could you imagine if they decided to change Stairway to Heaven just to shorten for radio.
Exactly
Yep, bad version to react. The song is completely mangled.
I. Will NEVER. Get tired of seeing reactors do this song!! Especially when this song is their 1st taste of Pantera. Hell of a rabbithole. Let's go!
RIP Dime and Vinnie!
Agreed, although it's a bit saddening that people keep choosing the music video (no criticism to them, can't really know as a blind reactor) when this song has one of the best intros of any metal song, just cut out for the sake of time in the music video. Oh well, still a great piece to react to.
I lived in Arlington, Tx, and was very lucky to see them live several times. And even got to go bowling with them about 3am drunk off my A$$ lmao
yes
I came here to say exactly that!@@herpyderpy4366
Couldn't agree more.
This song brings back so many memories for me from high school, bringing out some F'in emotions for me, and I'm no emotional guy in any way, shape, or form.
And when you hear how deep
his speaking voice is, you're even more blown away
I agree completely.
I wish he still had that range..it was something for sure
I think you can tell he’s a pretty distinct baritone even on this song from the lower parts, but his range was fantastic in the day. His speaking voice is super low though.
With decades of hard partying, smoking, and ZERO vocal training; it's pretty crazy he still has a voice!
@@JoeyJoJoJr0for real
You just witnessed Pantera perfection 🤘🤘🤘 R.I.P. Dime and Vinnie
No one ever talks about “Shattered ” off this album. Phil’s vocals on it are insane.
Shattered is probably the best example of Phil's vocals on cowboys.
It's a fuckin ripper for sure.
Dude yes, phil goes insane from start to finish on that one!
@@adameves5970TO be fair, every song on Cowboys is a ripper :D
He also goes a half step higher on it.
I would also put Medicine Man up there!
Someone said it before, but your analysis makes us old fans of these bands listen to their songs with fresh ears. It's like rediscovering details that have always been there, thank you very much.
I had a bandmate who was a soprano the way She was hearing this songs and Little things She pointed out always surprised me. It educated me to listen to certain songs differently and yeah i unferstood alot from hanging out with here. I was a lead guitarist in that band we were covering lots of symphonic metal during that time. She loved Tarja of nightwish.
just my own thoughts, thanks Mister! Been listening to Pantera (and others) since 1990- ... and even shook hands with Pantera guys in Moscow Tushino concert (where worked as translator for the sound crew) ;)
@@Boozin1972 I just read your comment, I also saw them live, in Caracas. I think we can say we are lucky, well you are a bit luckier, I was never that close to them. 🤝
Nooo, I like seeing her find what I've heard for years.
Literally one of the best metal songs of all time!!
Amazing song. Floods will always be my favorite though. Hits me every time.
@jamesevans2073 Another great one!! On Floods, the little outro melody is the icing on the cake. So simple, yet so beautiful.
Pantera carried the metal scene in the 90s
By far my favorite Pantera jam.
Cemetery Gates is a masterpiece. Tight, complex, ferocious, and melodic. Not easy to nail all that in one song.
I'm not a big metal guy - but this is beautiful. A work of art.
"The guitar is like another voice" is the best way to describe how Dimebag Darrell played guitar. He was the best at what he did!
Also, Phil Anselmo's vocals are insane on this entire album. From the aggressive metal vocals, to beautiful cleans, to Rob Halford-style highs. "Cowboys from Hell" is such a landmark album.
I would say his highs are more Bruce Dickinson than Rob Halford.
RIP Dime
You need to listen to Chuck Billy from testament song trail of tears
Halford, definitely. Far more than Dickinson. The quality of vocal distortion is closer to Rob's.
I don't get this Dimebag dick riding to this day. He wasn't the best and sure as hell isn't by todays standards. 99% of the time the "muh best guitarist" is america centric, i wonder why that is.
"Cowboys From Hell" and "This Love" are also great examples of Phil Anselmo's vocal range. You will also enjoy Dimebag Darrell's guitar riffs in both songs! Keep 'em coming Bethany!
Yes, "This Love" would be another good song to investigate.
actually all their stuff before Cowboys From hell shows Phil amazing voice. They have four albums pre Cowboys and Phil has alot of soaring Rob Halford vocals in those early spandex years. There are great YT live videos of them back in teh 80's and Phil goes crazy powerhouse on the vocals.
Drag yhe water
And then Fking Hostile just to set the tone. Read the lyrics.
And then Fking Hostile just to set the tone. Read the lyrics.
That ending is legendary. These high notes hits the soul!!!
100%
gAAAAaAates
Every time. You feel it…. Every time.
It is! There was one part when she said "Uhh I want him to hold that note" oh you just wait until then end lol, you will get it.
I get Goosebumps every time I hear the end of that song Dime making that guitar saying. A part of my Teenage years. that is gone forever. Rest in peace Vinny and dime
Never fails. People who know music, but rarely listen to metal, find these great metal performances so exhilarating.
not for nothing but this was a mainstream hit and she's definitely heard the song before. a sucker is born every minute
It wasn't a mainstream song. They really only had one mainstream song, which is sad considering how great they are. I could never get over how Metallica seemed to overshadow them, at least in the mainstream. @@RancorousSea
The moment her face says "WTF is happening" is why I love to watch people reacting to this music I grew up on and appreciate so much. And the analysis just allows me to appreciate it a bit more. Thank you and rock on!!!
So glad you started with this one. It really showcases all that Phil could do vocally. Dude was much more than just a screamer. Had a phenomenal voice.
The songs on Power Metal (the previous album) showcase what Phil could do vocally.
@InsaneWayne355
Is not was!
I was waiting for Phil to hit that note so I could see the look on her face! Priceless! 😂😭
What a pleasure watching someone discover Pantera for the first time! "This Love" is one you have to listen to. This showcases Phil's range and power perfectly.
With that 'clarity' in his voice, and the fact it's also like 'butter', presumably means that Phil Anselmo's voice is like clarified butter.
Philip “Ghee” Anselmo
That guy is ghee?
So much better than calcified butter.
The math checks out.
@@michaelrains64295 The O Ghee.
This lady is so beautiful she has such inquisitive lovely nature and she is so grateful of so much of this terrific art . I bet she is a joy to be around ..
The ending of this song is epic - Phil’s screams being replicated by Dimebags guitar - amazing!
This is made all the more wild if you ever hear his speaking voice which sounds like a dump truck driving slowly down a coarse gravel road. RIP "DimeBag" Darrell Abbott who was murdered on stage in 2004, ending the life of one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time. And his brother and amazing drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott who died of heart failure in 2018. Phill and Rex have recreated Pantera with the help of Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante.
Very accurate description of Phil's speaking voice 😁
When she said his diction was so clear, I couldn't help but think about some interviews I heard where he was mumbling in that deep baritone voice so much I felt like enabling Closed Captions
About what I was going to say, lol
If you havent heard his band En Minor, the vocals are all low baritone bordering on bass like his speaking voice.
@@Zhgarrlike Ozzy, you understand every syllable he sings but when he talks, forget it!!! Incredible
The look on her face when Dime started making the guitar sing….
Oh man, I laughed my butt off when this came into my subscription notifications. You are officially going down the path of a metalhead by listening to Pantera 😂 On behalf of all metalheads, we apologize for turning your channel into an analysis of metal and rock music LOL We hope you are enjoying some of it!!
Hahaha agreed..
@@evilwithin32come on don't be that guy. Groove metal, thrash metal dude who cares is banger music that was his own thing at some point and it hasn't lost it's magic till this day
The greatest guitarist to ever live, one of the greatest bands of all time. Been my #1 to for 18 years
Every person in this band is a piece of magic that makes this incredible band so iconic. All the band members have other music projects that I highly recommend you check out! 🤩
Hell Yeah and Damage Plan. 🤘
Love all the side projects but Down NOLA is my pick for greatest metal album of all time. Find myself listening to it regularly to this day.
Pantera has a whole catalog of amazing music. Buckle up
Great reaction!! I was lucky enough to play in a band that opened up for Pantera when they toured for this album back in 1991. We played with them and Suicidal Tendencies at the Stone in San Francisco back in August of 1991. The guys from Pantera were great guys and super gracious that night.
Which band?! 😎
@@johndinsdale4454 Hate.
Suicidal was great. Shut the door w/ Trujillo incorporating funk so well. Just watched the Jaco doc recently and Trujillo produced. Awesome job. I’d like to mention I was making bass loops mid-80’s and everyone kept asking me to play lower on the neck. Wish I realized then my ADHD suits guitar a lot more.
Was at that show and while you guys and ST were amazing, Pantera blew the doors off that night! They also got me and my brothers from Ft Ord in on their guest list as the show was sold out when we got there
Thats a great typo lol I just picture you all going for sandwiches after the show and the staff was super awesome lol
I love the way you analize heavy metal videos!!! we want more videos like this!!! Pantera is the bes band in the world!!!
Loved Pantera and Anselmo's voice since the beginning! Love that you love it! It's one of my favorite Pantera songs. The guitar riff is epic and timeless.
Since the beginning? This wasn't his beginning. They had album before this one called Power Metal with Phil on vocals.
Well, I didn't say this was the beginning, I said I have loved them since the beginning
Like "Butta" ... love it! "This Love" will serve you some more of that butter. "Cowboys From Hell" or "Walk" or "5 Minutes Alone" are good examples of his harsh vocals
3:57 This was one of Pantera’s superpowers that people don’t recognize often enough. The band was incredibly tight and their crisp sound added so much to what made them sound as good as they did. Other bands that try to replicate it end up sounding muddy like you said. Sometimes it’s bad mixing but usually it’s just a lack of the technical skill and cohesiveness that these fellas had.
Pantera is my favorite band of all time and Cemetery Gates is one of my favorite songs. I got emotional watching your reaction to this song (and so many others like Metallica and Tool) and hearing you describe the depth and complexity of the music and vocals. I REALLY appreciate your reaction videos!
Phil's voice is amazing, and this song comes straight from the heart. I love how you get his and Dimebags duet on this, because it's such a monent. Darrell could shred like EVH but new when not to play a note like Peter Green .
Rip Vinie a Darrell!
Your expressions the whole time was like a kid getting their first bicycle. Fabulous! I could hardly wait for the closing notes......but it was worth it.
MAKE SURE you listen even not on camera for the FULL version of this song which includes a 2min godly intro!!
As soon as I hit play I knew it was the video version; absolutely second on a full version of the song. The build-up to the drop into the groove is what makes "Groove Metal" a thing.
And Pantera are the kings of groove metal!
it is really huge shame that most reactor do the wrong version of this masterpiece. The intro is a mandatory setup for the complete song.
Yes!!! Please listen to the full album cut!!!
the dimesqueals are amazing
Yeah, I commented about this before reading your comment. The intro is absolutely god-tier.
Greatest band that ever lived, and i’ll die on this hill.
I love these types of videos and seeing the appreciation from people who might not normally listen to this style of music.
He's an absolutely incredible vocalist, even today.
One of the greatest bands I ever saw in concert. It didn't matter the size of the crowd, they crushed it and put out the same powerful music. Great reaction video as always.
I was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK USA between 1986-1989. I think Pantera is from Arlington Texas, which isn't that far away. I saw Pantera probably 2x a year during that time. They used to regularly play this tiny club in Lawton, OK (which was the city that Ft. Sill was attached to). I didn't even really like metal all that much back then, but they were so good, so tight, so cool to the audience. There were giant humans who'd pull anyone out who fell in the pit, it felt like a great house party. Those guys would talk to anyone who'd go out and smoke a cigarette with them.
Their energy was infectious and all consuming. It was like being sucked into an F5 tornado for 90 minutes. Incredible live performances.
You are awesome! Your reviews make me hear all of my favorite songs over again for the first time with your deep dives. Thank you! ❤
It always brings tears to my eyes when I see someone discover the music I enjoyed soooo many years ago 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻💯
Steve, I agree, I can't believe she hasn't listened to so many songs of our youth. I just found her channel. 🤘🎶🤘🎶
Awesome reaction. Love how you let it play for a bit and then analyze. You're able to get the full effect that way
Your surprised facial expressions were a brilliant, enjoyable reaction all on their own. Great job!
It's hard to describe how much I truly enjoy watching first time Pantera reactions, especially for this song. It's truly magical.
it's really fun to watch someone start to understand why we like metal. we listen to are our favorite songs/albums/bands over and over, and it seems there is always something new to discover.
I love your technical analytical separation of sound and terminology. Some of which I've never heard before. Your reaction to Pantera was the way I reacted to hearing, or listening, to them for the first time. It was truly biblical, or spiritual. I didn't become a metal head/head banger until much later in my life. So I really missed out on the evolution of metal. I certainly have a greater appreciation of how talented and gifted these artists were/are today than I would have in the 80s and 90s. Rock on !!🤘
you are perfect
Fr
amen
Bethany, you are becoming quite the metalhead! Love it!
Pantera will always keep you guessing... I watched to the end knowing what was coming.🤘🤘
I had the honor of seeing this live in 1991. They opened for Skid Row in Asheville. It was amazing. Very blessed to have had that experience. RIP Dime and Vinnie. Gone but never forgotten.
Dimebag Darrell was awesome, it was sad to hear when he was killed, and just the fact that he was shot and killed on stage during a concert with his band Damageplan, along with their head of security, a fan and an employee at the venue they were playing at, by a deranged fan of Damageplan is insane. RIP Dimebag
When I was a kid, listening to Metallica and Pantera, we didn't have anyone that understood music the way we felt it. And I thank you soooo much for being able to describe why I was feeling what you are able to see and hear and explain. Thank you 1000x more than you'll ever know
14.44 Dimes bending pinches right in pitch with Phil's vocal. Class ☝🏻🙏🏻👏🏻
To see another coach fall in love with Phil's voice 😊
Love that you are checking out Pantera!❤❤❤side note, no need to apologize for going back so much, none of us who are Pantera fans have any issues about re-listening 😂
She has great personality authentic she gets so excited and I love that
Revolution Is My Name, one of my favorites Pantera's song.
Love this channel!! You can see in her face sheer appreciation and joy! Great reaction 👍
Cowboys era Phil is the greatest metal vocalist of all time. Mix that with the greatest metal guitarist of all time, the unflappable freight train that is Vinnie / Rex rhythm...we will never see this again in our lives. RIP Vinnie, RIP Dime, RIP Pantera.
Dime is not even remotely close to being the best metal guitarist
@@FuckUA-camAndGoogle LOL thanks...now I have to clean off the coffee I just spat at my screen laughing
@@davidristic3800 Most overrated guitarist since Jimi Hendrix.
The content of your videos is incredible, you describe in words what is difficult for many rockers, we simply enjoy the energy of each song, but when I watch your videos, I understand even more why many of us like these songs so much. thank you
Phil has thrown down more vocal styles and sounds through the decades than any other metal singer, by far. From all of Pantera's discography, Down, En Minor, Superjoint Ritual and Scour, he's covered a huge range of sonic territory.
Hi Bethany, Love your channel and your breakdown of the music. Just fantastic. You made a comment about how you shouldn't be surprised by the great vocals, musicianship of the band etc. I commend you for giving it all a go, because most people just say..."oh it's metal, it's just a bunch of screaming..." but as you are experiencing there is a tremendous amount of talent out there in this genre. Lot's more to discover. keep up the great work.
This song is a masterpiece on every level just one of the great songs by pantera one of the greatest metal bands of all time.
Quite possibly one of the best songs ever ,reviewed by definitely the best reaction channel.
I also love their cover of Planet Caravan, very versatile vocalist for sure.
One of the best covers ever.
Makes me happy I was a teen in the 80's
You have a secret leather jacket in your closet I'm guessing 😂
First amazing the little swing dance with your hand , second Is great to know what is coming for her being a pantera fan .... Love this reaction 🤟😎
Watch love on Moscow ‼️
I digged watching your reaction
I'm now a fan
Keep on Rockin'
🤘🏼🖤🤘🏼
I assume that for everyone like me, who heard this song before, it took a lot of willpower not to skip to the end. The first time I heard the duelling banjos bit between Phil’s voice and Dimebag’s pinched harmonics my mind was blown. Always fun to see a first time reaction to that.
Do you mean the trading off at the end of the song? If so, those are natural harmonics, just for future reference.
So glad to see you listening to and appreciating one of my favorite all time bands. \,,/ ❤
I was just a kid when this album was released, and to this day it still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.
I love imagining listening for the first time, goosebumps for sure. They have been one of my favorites since 1990..Dime and Vinnie forever
One of my favourite live bands! Loved your reaction and analysis, I hope you also take a look at "This Love" - sooo good!!
Got to see them twice in 96’ 🤘🏼
Here’s some other songs you should react to by Pantera!
~ Walk
~ This Love
~ The Sleep
~ Hollow
~ Domination “LIVE”
~ Mouth for War!!!!
Pantera is like Alice In Chains where every album sounds completely different from the others.
Just gonna add Domination LIVE in Moscow ua-cam.com/video/aDACorIaxNw/v-deo.html
By her words and specially by her facial expressions I can say that we've got another soul to rock n' roll. Welcome to the team! \m/
You got it, loved it, just the same as we all did. Great stuff
This is one of their best as it covers a lot of different areas i feel. Bloody great song and nice and long too! It's so awesome to see peoples first reactions to hearing this music I have been listening to since it was released back in the day... ahhhhh it's just good!
The crazy thing is that they started out as an 80s glam metal band.
Man could Dimebag play his guitar , my heart breaks when I think of what happened that tragic night. Two sets of brothers so much talent. Great post .
I grew up not far from these guys. They were a couple of years older, but my H.S. days were spent running into them from time to time. I wish I could find one of their self produced cassettes that I had... After Darrell died I used to see his brother/drummer Vinnie just a few years back at some local clubs here in Arlington, TX just hanging out. Sadly he passed away too.
As an old (can't believe I'm saying that) 80's and 90's metal and alternative fan, your analysis and reactions brings joy to me while watching. It's nice to see the younger generation (younger than mine) appreciate the music I grew up with. I've probably watched more of your videos than some and less than most, but it's always a pleasure. They bring me back to my youth. Thank you!
I remember watching an interview a while back where the singer was talking about it taking forever for him in the studio to nail the note on "and the memory still remains" because it was so tough for him.
Pantera fan here and yo this chick is 🔥. Vocal analysis babe lol
you gotta see them live is even better phil is beast
Seeing them in the Bronco Bowl in Dallas was just surreal. The after party was incredible!!!
I love this! What a great analysis. Pantera is my favorite, but Phil is a man of many bands! You probably wont like his vocals in some of them because he does so many styles. You should listen to his southern rock/metal band Down and his band En Minor. Maybe try Where I'm Going or Beneath the Tides by Down and Knock Me Cold by En Minor. So many great, great songs and vocals.
Cry about it.
Great reaction.
I still think Metal vocalists can surprise you. A live example is Opeth in their concert ‘Live at the Red Rocks’.
Take any song, but I suggest ‘Ghost of Perdition’ or ‘Deliverence’
Saw Pantera in a club in Hadley outside of UMASS Amherst. They had just released Cowboys from Hell. Blew my mind! I hadn't heard anything like them. Met Vinnie since he was in the crowd watching the opening act. What a chill dude. Freaked out when I then saw him behind the drum kit!
It's amazing that you feel in love with Dimes playing. I wasn't expecting that. But his playing is insanely unique in his own right. So that was awesome.
Great choice!!!!!!
RIP Darrell Abbott
It's been almost 20 years since we lost you and I think about you all the time
My favourite band from the day of release till this day.. still kicking it hard and passing it on to my kid.
The guitar in this video is absolutely Amazing!!🤘👊🤘🎸🎵🎶
Rip Dimebag and Vinnie Paul!
RIP Vinnie and Dime, met all of them in '94, one of the best show's ever...
One Of the best songs and vocals EVER!
Pantera is EASILY top 5 all-time Metal bands! Do more from them them, but 90% of their catalog after this is definitely harder metal lol
“Fucking Hostile” 😂
If you love his voice here you may want to watch some of his interviews especially from the last 5 years or so. You won’t believe it’s the same guy singing here lol.
“I’m Broken” would be a good next video. Not so much for any spectacular vocals, it’s just a good hard punch in the face!
ha, I love how the violinist/choir girl is rocking out to one of the most hard-core metal bands of all time. lol
I like seeing you and that other girls reactions to these legendary rock bands.
Cemetery Gates is one of the absolute classics that you have to have lived it to be apart of the magic of the poetry and "choir".
It's apart of the soundtrack of my life.
Alot of people are dead now who didn't make it through those times.
Couldn't have picked a better first Pantera Song. So early on in their career to but this song is one of the best examples of Phil's amazing vocals.
The anxiety of knowing what you are about to hear Phil belt out is torture 😂 This song was a show of his almost full range. Only a few of these, most others are just brutal groove metal assaults of ear pleasure 😊
You should have better chosen the extended version... 😂
