  • Today I'm finally hearing the band Slipknot, starting with the song "Duality." I previously reacted to an acoustic performance from their lead vocalist, Corey Taylor, but needless to say this song is something very different.

I never knew this song was about this, as someone that suffers from chronic headaches caused by brain damage I totally relate... I appreciate the song much more, even though I find that Slipknots vocals are to much in front of the mix, I prefer the focus to be on the instrumentals...

I can't believe people actually think this song is about migraines 😂.
This song is not about migraines. That's a stupid story that has been rotating the internet for years.
This song is about the duality within the soul. Darkness vs light. Fear vs love.
Corey is a super empath. He and I, for that matter, feel the world very differently than most people.
"I push my fingers into my eyes
It's the only thing that slowly stops the ache
But it's made of all the things I have to take
Jesus, it never ends, it works it's way inside
If the pain goes on, I'm not gonna make it" because a super-empath can't not feel. We can't not see all the pain, suffering, and ignorance of the world.
"I've gotta say what I've gotta say
And then, I swear, I'll go away
But I can't promise you'll enjoy the noise" because super-empaths always speak the truth as they see it. Even if it's not pretty.
"Tell me the reality is better than the dream
But I found out the hard way
Nothing is what it seems" because super-empaths see beyond the bullshit. We feel everything.
"All I've got is insane" because that is how it feels for a super-empath to navigate the world for most of our life, until we wake up to who we are.
Fun fact: You can clearly see the duality in Corey's soul in Slipknot and Stone Sour. Slipknot represents the darkness, and Stone Sour is the light. It's all about spirituality. His solo project, BTW, could only happen when he reunited with Alicia, which is another part of his spiritual journey. Listen to the lyrics of the songs. It's about a Twin Flame journey. Most of Corey's songs are about Twin Flames in both Slipknot and StoneSour. I can give a whole lecture about that topic alone.
Plus, if you listen to Corey talk about his tattoos, you will learn that all of them are about duality. Mine, too, BTW. It's who we are. Super-empaths. Heyokas. Look it up 😉.
Many blessings 🙏. Much love and light ❤✨.

From an article about the song:
Lead singer Corey Taylor explained: "Did you ever get that headache that is just not going to go away, and you end up sticking your thumb and your middle fingers so far into your eyes just to stop the pain? It usually has to do with making a choice. you get to that point in everyday life that you have to make a decision that you may not want to, but your kind of pushed into making that decision." >>

That fullness, you mention, that Corey Taylor maintains, even with most of his harsh vocals, is a cornerstone of my metal experience.
Metalheads sometimes say metal relaxes them, and with Corey's voice I can actually put my finger on it (for myself at least). His vocals feel centered. He is giving us all this emotion, aggression and harshness, yet more often than not it sounds like he still has a little more, if he wanted to. It feels stable.
That mix of the harshness, providing such a good vent for my own frustration, and the control I hear in it, does a lot for me emotionally.
It's not unique to metal. I can think of one non-metal song in which the vocalist manages to give me the same feeling. It's a powerful place to project from, I imagine.

Fun Fact about this video: this is actually a fans house. They willingly let hundreds of people destroy their house for a "Slipknot" video.
Also, this song is about Corey Taylor having migraines, which the house serves as a metaphor for his head with all the people running in and breaking it being the pain from headaches. That's why in the parts where he's kinda talk-singing, he's sounding like he's got his hand on his own head to alleviate pressure and the line "I push my fingers into my eyes" also has the same relief-effect.

    • @SpaceMissile
      @SpaceMissile Місяць тому +2

I have been watching your videos today and subscribed. I love your take on all these bands I grew up listening to. I was thinking Mudavyne as well. My impulse was to recommend "Death Blooms" , because it's a better showcase of Chad's vocals, but it's a bit more "experimental" in structure and may not be for everyone.

      @aaronmetcalf3483 Місяць тому

I was also thinking that something from Audioslave would be great too or sSoundgarden but after watching a few videos and saw Chris was listened to on a couple posts. I figured with something that may not have been known to the creator might be a better post for her. However, I would think the songs such as "Bring Em Back Alive" or "Light My Way" would be great suggestions too. I also just want to throw it out there but Queens of the Stone Age should be mentioned as a another path down the rabbit hole that should be experienced by all music appreciating owners of ears and lovers of talent.

Brilliantly worded. It’s truly mind blowing how well the deepest of existential themes can be expressed through both vocals and instruments. You can truly feel the pain they’re going through when writing this song. And as you mentioned, it’s truly authentic. It’s not just a song about anguish, anxiety, depression, mental breaking points, etc… it’s a connection to those existential, primal feelings.
Sorry if you have but you should do an Opeth song. Either Harvest by Opeth or Ghost of Perdition Live at Red Rocks.
I can tell by your body language and terminology that you’re connecting to it.
Also, the way he kind of mumbles out the words in the very beginning of the song put you in this catatonic like lullaby state. Just in a more darker existential way.

Many people get caught up in the appearance of Band X, and it distracts them from their real motives. The feeling that lyrics and sound cause us to emote. It is here where we identify, and the artist becomes relatable. In some ways, we feel like we 'know' the artist, even though we've never met. This is the beauty of the song.

"Duality" has such a personal resonance for me now. I had always loved the song but something made me love it more....
As an adult I got diagnosed with some serious lifelong health problems and had to get an MRI ...I was not looking forward to it. I had seen a lot of doctor dramas, they always made MRI's look like this super anxiety inducing thing where you'll be trapped in a small space, have to hold completely still, and lots of loud annoying noise around you. I was SOO nervous about it. But when I got there, the staff made me comfortable and gave me a choice of music to listen too and I told him the kinds of music I liked and gave me MRI save headphones and put on Spotify.
So when I rolled back into this giant metal tube to get this thing done that I was dreading, I heard Corey Taylor whisper into my ears "I push my fingers into my eyes." and it was so relaxing and I just coasted through the whole thing after that.

It's such a human song; especially the main lyric. I think that's why so many people connect over this kind of music. It's wonderful to see so many people from different genres coming together.
    Well done Internet!
    Ignore the haters.
    We love you x

Loved the reaction and glad that you decided to explore this band. I'd like to make a couple suggestions to help:
    1) Before i Forget or Eyeless for some older.
    2) The Devil In I and/or All Out Life for some newer stuff (fair warning - the video for Devil In I is pretty intense and might be distracting).
Watch them do Spi It Out live from Britain's Download festival to see corey take control of a crowd.
    4) Zzyzx Rd with Stone Sour and I'm Not Jesus with Apocolyptica forba bit different taste of Corey.
    Enjoy!

I had the chance to see Slipknot live in 2022, and I can say without hesitation that their show is an experience, and not just a "music concert". One awesome spectacle!

Didn't think I'd see these guys on your channel. (Love your channel BTW, it's cool seeing what a more classically trained ear has to say about some of my favorite bands.)
I wonder sometimes whether you'd actually like the song as a whole. I get that you'd pick out pieces you like and accentuate them. Just kind of curious about that.
Just throwing some ideas out there of music in the genre that maybe you wouldn't like? But maybe you would:
-A Perfect Circle - Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythms Of The War Drums
(Tool's Maynard James Keenan other band.)
    (Simple lyrics, big message.)
-Mushroomhead - We are the Truth
(Similar to Slipknot but the fans of the two bands famously hated each other for decades. Never got super huge because some people hate the main lead singers cadence but others absolutely adore it.)
(Probably of good mixture of new and old Mushroomhead with the female lead singer and the main lead singer)

You know what that's what I love about metal music because there's so much going on you can listen to it over and over again and then pick out little details that she missed the first few times either in the vocals or in the instrumentals or some things that they're doing with the mix there's a lot of replayability

Watching your videos always makes my day.
I would love to hear what you have to say about Avenged Sevenfold "Hail to the King".
I also really liked your last video where you reacted to Five Finger Death Punch. If you want to see a different side of them, you should watch their "Jekyll and Hyde" video. The first minute and a half is just them sitting around talking about what the music video should be. Disclaimer: that video has a lot of swearing in it, but I like seeing their more playful side. It might not be my favorite song of theirs, but I still have to smile when I watch the video 🙂

The music video, directed by Mark Klasfeld and Tony Petrossian, cost between $300,000 and $500,000 and was recorded on March 27, 2004. It was shot in Des Moines, Iowa, at a fan's house that was due for renovation, and features the band performing inside the house surrounded by dozens of fans both inside and outside the house, which gets destroyed in the process as the fans crash through the windows and walls. In the aftermath, the family asked the band to replace an extensive list of objects and fittings that were damaged or destroyed during the shoot. Roadrunner Records provided the family with roughly $50,000 as compensation.[citation needed] Prior to filming, the production told the crowd only to act wild but not destroy the house; this rule was left unheeded. Midway through the shooting, the band and fans were asked to avoid jumping around too much, as it would have resulted in either the floor caving in or the entire house collapsing. Fans were also told to take extreme caution around Craig Jones as the nails in his mask may injure them.[citation needed] It was revealed later that the band had performed the song several times while the crowd vandalized the house, and the resulting footage was edited to produce the video.[citation needed]
Shawn Crahan recalls that the band "asked our real fans to be in the video and people came from all over", adding that "it meant so much to us. We weren't really supposed to destroy that house - but we did it anyway. Another plus for that song is that I get to beat the fuck out of my keg. What else could you want?" One of the fans was a teenage British national who used some of his savings and his grandmother's money to travel to Iowa from England for the shoot and was accommodated by Corey Taylor after being denied a check-in at a local hotel due to his age.[citation needed] Two incidents occurred during the filming; two fans were injured by broken glass but were treated on the scene by paramedics stationed during filming and a doctor who lived in the neighborhood where the shoot occurred, while a group of youths were arrested by police present during filming for using baseball bats to vandalize a Mercury Sable rented by the band's record label to bring fans to the shoot's location.

Man, I don't want to think about how long ago this was, but my first encounter with this song and the band was at a roller rink school excursion. I didn't even know I was into metal at the time, but a kid I thought was cool was singing it on the bus journey to the venue and he played it on his phone (bloody rare thing to even be able to do in those days, might have been a walkman or something but my memory is telling me otherwise) when we got there, and even in that lo-fi, tinny distortion I could feel something pretty special coming through.

Love your reactions. Fun Fact: don't know if anybody mentioned this but the people in the video are actual Slipknot fans who were invited to be part of the video shoot and destroy that empty house that was being torn down anyways. Some love slipknot's earlier stuff I prefer solid cleaner vocals. I would suggest the song Bother by his other band Stone Sour. His vocals there are so raw and in my opinion soulful. He's got a great voice that deserves being showcased 🤘
