About 15 yrs ago, I was running alone on a quiet rarely used road close to my home. As I was going around a bend, I saw a work van stopped about an 1/8 of a mile in front of me. 2 men got out and opened the back of the van and stood there. I felt uncomfortable and considered turning around but realized that there was nothing but woods in the direction I just came from. Right then, a family on 4 wheelers barrelled out of the woods in front of me! The 2 guys jumped in the van and sped off! That was the last time I ran alone and definitely the last time I ran on that road!

I always lock my doors when sitting alone in the car, and as a retired journalist who used to cover the courts and police beat, I always lock my doors when I leave the car, even if it's just a moment. It becomes a habit, and it could save a life.

This has helped my daughter, who eats in her car at work. The other day, some guy parked right beside her and just sat there, watching her and staring at her. I live in Nowhere, USA outside of a town of fewer than 10,000 people. A young mom neighbor of mine was running on our country road last summer when someone tried to abduct her. This was LESS THAN 1/2 mile from her house. She resisted and ran through a pasture to get away. Thankfully, she’s physically okay, but it has affected all of us.
She wasn’t wearing EarPods, she was aware of her surroundings, and she told her husband where she was going. After it was over, she couldn’t describe the man or the vehicle. She’s a very petite lady, so we’re all wondering if the man thought she was a teenager. Regardless, someone less than two miles from my little, country homestead tried to abduct someone that I know and care for.
Ladies, it can happen to any of us.

My daughter used to do that when she was 18. She lived on her own and I tried to tell her it wasn’t a good idea to go walking alone with her dog. But I ended up having a nightmare that she was grabbed by a van of certain men and they killed her. The police had her boyfriend identify her because I couldn’t bring myself to get up off the floor I was so upset.
I woke up crying and very upset.
I didn’t want to tell her about the dream but I felt I should. When I told her , she got quiet. She said the same van with the certain men I saw in my dream had pulled up in the parking lot and was looking at her when she was walking on that path at that park. As a mother, it terrifies you when your children aren’t careful with their safety.

This is one reason WHY I shop online for groceries. It's too easy to be attacked coming out of a store with a cart of packages you have to stop & load into your car. Plus, where is your purse? Is it locked in the front seat? Or, sitting in the front of your basket? I used to clip my purse to my shopping cart after tying it around my wrist when shopping. Being just 31 years old, I don't ever get mad at people that try to lecture me or give me a hard talking, when I do something that's not so smart and I've been that way since about my early to mid 20's, because I look at it as, "there's a reason I'm being talked to like this, I probably needed it," because I take it as an opportunity to grow, learn from my mistakes, and do better. So, anytime my elders lecture me and talk rough to me after I done something stupid or out of character, for whatever reason, I take it seriously. I thank God that I learned to do this in my early to mid 20's, because it's helped me grow, mature, and learn a little faster and the people that have talked to me like they're my momma or some other close relation, I know they didn't mean any harm and it was to teach me something, so I didn't make the same mistake, twice. So, I won't ever be mad at you for trying to momma me, even though we don't know each other personally, because I know you're trying to help me.

Limit your risk in everything you do. If I need to go to Walmart, I go right after dropping off kids at school. There was virtually no one in the store except employees and vendors. The shelves were well stocked, I got everything I was looking for and was out in 20 minutes. I was back at home with my groceries by 9:00am.

We go to familiar stores (we know the areas, layouts and exists in each store) and we are not spending much time just window shopping. It's in and out most times now. It's sad we cannot just enjoy our time out anymore.

I used to jog every evening after work up to the mountain behind our home until the last time. As I was turning around at a dead end, a car with 2 younger men pulled up next to me. The passenger got out and tried to grab me. I kicked and bit him and was able to run like my life depended on it home....and that was 20 years ago.

I have used Instacart for a few years but now my non fresh will be shipped to my house from Walmart and Instacart will be used for fresh. I have no defense in a store against a gun. Ed won’t let me go walking alone anymore and I have to wait for him to get home. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lyme Disease…I can’t fight off a gnat (a little exaggeration there). I was at my mother-in-law's last night she always listens to the news in the evening. The story in Arizona that you referenced should have been on the news and it was not! I had to look it up. This morning as I was getting dressed to go run some errands in town, I asked my husband, "Is this outfit too attention-grabbing?" Granted I'm taking my two very young boys with me but not only do I need to be able to move so I can protect my son's and myself but I don't want to bring on any unwanted attention. I've been doing this for years but in recent months my efforts have been increased because I have two voices of safety, basically yelling in my head before I leave home. Between Patara and my former Krav Maga instructor, I am aware more and more. Unfortunately, right now, lessons are not available to us. However, that does not stop me from practicing and teaching my son's in our backyard.
