Entrails can be boiled and fed to cats n dogs. Feet and wings trimmed can be put into stock. Unwashed excess eggs can be preserved for about a year in water with slake lime. Hard boiled can be pickled and canned. Quail meat can even be pressure canned. Quail could sustain you in hard times or easy.
@@mrjon75 hard boil the eggs, then place them in a sterilised jar of vinegar (personally I prefer 50/50 white to malt vinegar mix) with pickling spices (peppercorns, cloves, coriander seeds, mustard seeds, bay leaf). Really easy to do.
Loved the video Thank you You had everything preset ready to go, clearly spoken, a simple over view. Such production on YT are too rarely conducted. It is Very appreciated.
That plucker works great. Feathers are high in nitrogen and compost very well. The entrails make great catfish bait. They would also make great feed for a black soldier fly colony. That would be a great way to supplement your feed for your quail. BSF larvae are 35% protein and 35% fat, which make super good feed.
Thanks for the video. I have been skinning foul for years just because I got tired plucking and never wanted to spend a lot of money on a plucker. This might be in my future!
When processing pheasant and chukkar on my hunting preserve, we just dipped the bird in heated water (below boiling). Couple of seconds, not 30. Worked fine.
I would get me a clear storage container and cut me out two holes for my hands to go in and another to set the plucker through and catch all the feathers. It would save a lot of mess if processing a lot of birds at once. I’m gonna have to give this a try and possible build me a contraption with a motor drill chuck and all to do this with. I may even possibly put a low pressure water sprayer on it as well.
I was thinking the same. We process 100 chickens at a time and it was easy to pick them after they were scaled. Plus the feathers weren't such a mess. I wonder, does a quail have fine hairs like a chicken that needs to be singed? Ty
I see the plucker has a shaft that has a flat ground side. Hand drill-drill bit extensions could work for that set up (creating a permanent table set up) by getting the drill/motor away from the carcass and by supplementing a small electric motor of a known rpm so you could mechanically control the speed of the plucker through belt pulley or gearbox reduction to gain the correct constant speed for the plucker. That would also allow you to build a simple plastic shield over the plucker to guide feather discharge. Thanks for the information. Very good!
So far I have skinned when butchering, for ease. I have been reluctant to pluck quail after plucking all our meat chickens by hand.......This may be something for us to try. Thank you!
Terry, when I've processed chickens (I've done around 400 in total) I've always put Dawn dish soap in the scalding water to help cut the oils that hold the feathers in. It seems to make plucking a bit easier. Do you think it would work good on quail too?
Save the wing (primary or "flight" ) feathers and make a velcro backed taped shroud to attach to the sides of a brooder plate heater. "Comfort curtain" helps keep the heat under the plate, gives the heat plate the look of a huge mega-jumbo momma quail, and the comfort plate company sells these for up to $20... you could feed a lot of Quail if you had the $20. Waste naught, want not, or so they say. My $0.02. ~Tully River Quail
I have a much cheaper version for plucking chickens. It works well enough for me. I hold the bird by the legs in an empty garbage can and it catches most of the feathers my cordless drill plucks off. I usually need to pick the wings and tail by hand and clean up the straggling feathers. Still a whole heck of a lot faster than doing it all by hand! I need to get one of these.
Hello, I am Walid from Libya, one of your fans, and your video clip. I have quails, a wild breed, like the ones you have, for egg production. I have a question after your comment and my question. I have mothers in good condition, but the droppings are not cohesive. The people do not have symptoms of any diseases. Is this normal? If you would be kind enough to explain to me. Quail diseases and sugar for you
I had a neighbor who had them in her storage shed. We live in a trailer park and only the manager knew she had them and that's because the neighbor told her. I have quails now and the only two people I have told have not told anyone else. Mine are outside in cages. New manager lives right next to me. He doesn't know.
Bummer! I just clicked on your link, and the Ukraine plucker isn't currently in stock. :-( I have dry plucked in the past, but like you say, it takes awhile, and when you don't have the time, skinning goes much faster. I prefer skin on for looks too, though. I guess the spoon widget is good for those who don't like cleaning out by hand, but personally I think doing it by hand takes less time and does a better job. Thanks for the video, Terry. You always have such useful info.
Yeah, I just checked and they are out of stock. The seller Plucker Ukraine has other models but they are a little more expensive and designed for chickens. Hopefully they'll restock soon.
Could we see a comparison with a genuine try at plucking without scalding, please? Would that tool help with that, or in skinning the only option? My dietary restrictions are such that scalding is not an option.
Good video. Your first video thumbnail is good. I would update this thumbnail with your face on it. On UA-cam your face is your brand. I was scrolling to find your (this) video and couldn't find it right away because your face isn't on the thumbnail. I'd go with a photo of you again. Been content creating for 6 years now on UA-cam. Seems the creator's face is a very strong part of a thumbnail. Do some cheezy thumbs up photos or some frustration, shock, or other emotions. People search the search terms so quail is already part of the finding process. Then as a person goes through the content they associate your video with your face. I'm today years old realizing the importance of my face on thumbnails. lol Little friendly feedback. Loved the video and will try this and skin off methods both.
New friend and sub here. Interesting. Have never plucked quail. Have always skinned them and boned them during processing but that was always for personal consumption. Will have to consider this (like the plucker) and watch some more videos for sure. Thanks!
The model I have is for quail, dove and pigeon. It's has smaller fingers than the chicken model which is the one for $89. Hope they will relist these soon. I did several more birds that day and actually got better using the spoon, even faster than I can do by hand. And I have fat fingers... lol
Nice video (as always)🖒 My quail are 8 weeks old and today two roosters were injured (one had a blody eye and one a bloody cheak). I could not find sharp opjekts in the cage. After inspecting more birds I realized that some had red marks around the eyes. I feed them high quality 19% protein feed and change their water each day. Do you know what is wrong with them? I thought that it may be caused by the heigh sealing (50cm/20") but I don't believe that it is a resault of pekking since they were calm and did not miss any feathers.
Do they have adequate space in their cage? it could be aggression due to pecking order disputes where the one being pecked at can't get away because of overcrowding / lack of space. Attacks between males don't necessarily mean that feather plucking will be involved.
Wow, I can't believe they are out of stock already. The one you referenced for $90 is for the chicken size plucker. Hopefully, they will get them back in stock soon.
Thanks for the video, I subbed on your last one. I was wondering how the plucker has held up since it’s been about a year? Do you still recommend it? Thanks
I have been vegan and a meat lover, i often wondered how killing my own meat would change my relationship with food purely because its a job that we are not burdened with ourselves. I think its probably a valuable experience in terms of self discovery. Any thoughts of the subject??
Why not throw 20 quail in a 5 gallon home depot bucket and go at it with the plucker drill.... seems like that would work better and be faster for more birds
I'm interested in learning more about all of these methods, especially pickling. Any advice on further viewing or reading?

LOL, your drill is possessed!
It does have a mind of it's own.
Thanks for the video. I have been skinning foul for years just because I got tired plucking and never wanted to spend a lot of money on a plucker. This might be in my future!
Me too, I almost never pluck but this was cheap and my wife wanted skin on birds so I do as I'm told ... lol
Coturnix Corner happy wife ...
I think I heard if you boil the quial for a second the feathers come off easily
When processing pheasant and chukkar on my hunting preserve, we just dipped the bird in heated water (below boiling). Couple of seconds, not 30. Worked fine.
I really like the end result of the plucking. Great video
Wow that plucker drill attachment looks like it is doing great job. Thanks for the video.
Yes, it did a lot better than I expected. Thanks for commenting!
I just used my plucker like yours for the first time. I'll have a shower now to get the feathers out of my hair
I’ve learned so much from you 🥰
thank you!
We all learning from Terry. Great channel!
Gives a whole new meaning to “spoon ya”

Sounds like a good idea, share your results please!
You make it look so easy!
Try it with your hands especially since you dipped in hot water. Feathers literally wipe right off. Much faster with out plucker
I was thinking the same. We process 100 chickens at a time and it was easy to pick them after they were scaled. Plus the feathers weren't such a mess.
I wonder, does a quail have fine hairs like a chicken that needs to be singed? Ty
Thats awesum Terry, I always like the skin on and that thing works a treat
great video as always
I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. Thanks for the comment!
Sounded like that drill was about to change gears and get up and go. Hahaha. Great video.
Wow what a sound effect.
Work good
Thank you so mush , I still scar take this step and I’m new in this business
You're welcome
Great job 👍 man!

Blessings and more Blessings
Thank you, glad you are enjoying the channel.

It does making plucking a bit easier. My arthritic hands would get sore after a day of hand plucking. Thanks for the comment.

Great video.
Good information.
Thanks!
nice gadget👍👍
That was interesting. It was the first time I saw anyone process quail with the skin on. I may try that myself.
I think it makes for a better looking processed bird.
Great idea

That’s a great idea! Thank you for that.🙂🪶
The spoon tip is really useful.
I wonder if that slot down middle of the spoon makes much difference
Got me a pucker like that workes great.
Thank you.
Do you need to feed quail anything special for a certain time period before cooking and eating?
I have a much cheaper version for plucking chickens. It works well enough for me. I hold the bird by the legs in an empty garbage can and it catches most of the feathers my cordless drill plucks off. I usually need to pick the wings and tail by hand and clean up the straggling feathers. Still a whole heck of a lot faster than doing it all by hand!
I need to get one of these.
What kind of drill do you have that you can turn on like that?
Ive watch a couple of your videos have seen you clean you quailbwith skin on and off so how do you prefer them to be done? Thank you
That plucker come with a safe word?
fluggaenkdechioebolsen
Thank you! :)
some just pull the skin off with the feathers
nicely done

When I think of all the time I spent plucking chickens when I was a kid...
Very good someday i will have quails. My plan put them in my garage do they make loud noise? I live in a city close to Chicago.
They're much quieter than chickens. Mine are no louder than any other bird flying around the yard.
I had a neighbor who had them in her storage shed. We live in a trailer park and only the manager knew she had them and that's because the neighbor told her. I have quails now and the only two people I have told have not told anyone else. Mine are outside in cages. New manager lives right next to me. He doesn't know.

Looks like the feathers are going everywhere but the bucket 🤣
You got a good deal. That plucker is unavailable on Amazon right now but it shows for about $85 and it is $120 and above on eBay
That higher priced model is for chickens a larger, this one has really short fingers. Hopefully they'll restock soon.
Hi Terry...are you still using this for pluck your birds? If not please link me to what your using now so I can look at it....Thanks!
Thank you for the video! Is there anything you need to do prior to butchering? Aka stop feeding them for a day? Or just get right to it?
Don’t stop feeding them or they will lose weight. You want a healthy nutritious bird.
What size drill is needed for attachment
You should do a video with an automatic egg sheller
😂🤣😂😂🤣
Hello great video do they make a plucker just for quail.
Could we see a comparison with a genuine try at plucking without scalding, please? Would that tool help with that, or in skinning the only option? My dietary restrictions are such that scalding is not an option.

Wow- does this plucker work on bantam chickens as well as it does on quail?
One controversial but fast method is called the Ozzy Osbourne. Works.
I am new to quail but when you butcher them how much do you sell them for?
I don't know if I'd pay $89 for it. I made one for chickens that cost me less than $10. The spoon is a nifty idea if your fingers won't fit.
The model I have is for quail, dove and pigeon. It's has smaller fingers than the chicken model which is the one for $89. Hope they will relist these soon. I did several more birds that day and actually got better using the spoon, even faster than I can do by hand. And I have fat fingers... lol
can you rig a 5 gallon pail as a shroud?
How taste?
I can eat a quail if i don't know how it die and die just like naturaly i don't know and like to know if i can eat it
I hsve a chicken plucker. Could I put a few quail in it at a time.
You can, but I find the larger pluckers tend to tear the skin on quail. Try it and see.
Nice video (as always)🖒
My quail are 8 weeks old and today two roosters were injured (one had a blody eye and one a bloody cheak).

You have an aggressive rooster trying to peck out eyes. Watch to see which one it is and remove him. And/or give the birds more room.
Don’t they need 22 fo 25 percent protein?
Now they are 90.00 but out of stock looked like it worked well
Wow, I can't believe they are out of stock already. The one you referenced for $90 is for the chicken size plucker. Hopefully, they will get them back in stock soon.
Terry, was this plucker you built or bought?
if you did it, make a video showing how
It was purchased
What drill are you using?
I need some of your hatched quails so how can I get
How many quail can you keep in your cages?
Think this would work for chickens?
Diane Myers here you have for chicken. It is doing a great job!

Thanks for the video, I subbed on your last one. I was wondering how the plucker has held up since it’s been about a year? Do you still recommend it? Thanks
Great question!!
I decided not to get a plucker. I have now change my mind, shopping now. The trick with the spoon, way kewl.
I'd cut a plastic milk jug and open the side to catch splatter. Just put it on the bottom of the plucker. Ma 2
I have been vegan and a meat lover, i often wondered how killing my own meat would change my relationship with food purely because its a job that we are not burdened with ourselves. I think its probably a valuable experience in terms of self discovery. Any thoughts of the subject??
🇺🇸👍👍👍OK
Why not throw 20 quail in a 5 gallon home depot bucket and go at it with the plucker drill.... seems like that would work better and be faster for more birds
🙏😎
put the quail in the small bucket and use that drill plucker. All the feather will be inside that bucket.
👍
👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
I don’t think so, Feathers everywhere,
But you can just skin it and all the feathers come with it... it takes about 1 minute to dress a quail with a pair of utility shears.
I bet a cardboard box placed strategically would catch most of the feathers.
I had 5 gallon bucket below the plucker but it only caught about 25% of the feathers. Might try a box. Thanks for the comment.
If you turn your hot plate off, your drill won't behave badly
Processing birds in white pants? Everything else is great
anything for quail food funding? high five
thanks
I need that plucker.
And give us the name of the drill, so we never buy it.
So a spork…
What drill do you use?
